Been a long time since I've seen a team just completely overmatched by pitching like the Astros are tonight. They don't stand a chance.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Astros gave him up for Kazmir last year.

Mengden appears to have better stuff than at least 2/5ths of the Astros' rotation.

He's got better stuff than all of them. It's not even close.

That was helpful.

I don't know what Mengden is throwing to the lefties, but it acts like a screwball, starting inside and then moving back over the inside corner. It's a nice pitch.

I didn't realize mengden could touch 94-95. Not second guessing any of the trades, merely commenting, but we have certainly dealt away a surfeit of high end pitching talent for a team with two legit, top of the rotation pitchers last year (and 0.5 this season).

Notice how quiet Gomez was in the box that last at bat?  That's when he gets good swings.

I thought that the Kazmir trade was a good one at the time, although it pained me to see both Nottingham and Mengden go. But I think as the years go by we're going to regret that trade.

Exactly. Mengden easily tops him in the facial hair category, though.

Baffling move by Correa. Altuve was already at 3rd, there was no need to draw a throw or anything... no clue what he was thinking there.

Yeah, that wasn't a great move. At least Altuve didn't have some horrible collision at the plate.

Yeah, you draw a throw to prevent a throw going home and plate a run, but not to prevent a throw to 3B like that.

I was looking at Astros stats today... Valbuena had an almost identical AVG/OBP/SLG line to Correa for the year. Both about .260/.359/.460. - in fact, Val was a few OPS points better.

Given the new rules at second, why can he slide into second with his lead leg two feet in the air like like that?

Nice job by Giles.  Castro cost a run, but Astros still up 6-4 at the stretch.

And Harris out...Feliz in for the worst save opportunity there is.

Yeah, I'm starting to worry if the inability of the starting staff to consistently go deep in games and that fluky run of extra-inning games is wearing down the bullpen...

It's looking disturbingly like last Septembrr. The All-Star break may give the guys enough of a rest to straighten things out for a while, but I'm afraid another late-season decline is probably ahead.

Harris gave up his first hit other than a single in 37 games, and it has caused us to hit the panic button on him? I agree he looked like shit last night with a mediocre fastball up and an ability to locate the curve, but again first hit other than a single in 37 games.

I think the bullpen is deep enough that it allows Hinch to potentially shuffle a few roles around and keep it fresh. Also, Hoyt is still in AAA. Maybe Sipp will improve to his mean.

I don't recall him even throwing a curve last night. Not many, at least. But nearly every single fastball was up.

It will be interesting to see who is closing games by the end of the year: Harris, Gregerson, or Giles. I suppose Feliz has a shot, too, though it was not a good audition last night.

No panic at all. Mostly realistic about his ability and ceiling. He is nowhere near as bad as he was last night, but I do not think he is a long term closer either.

I don't recall him even throwing a curve last night. Not many, at least. But nearly every single fastball was up.

It will be interesting to see who is closing games by the end of the year: Harris, Gregerson, or Giles. I suppose Feliz has a shot, too, though it was not a good audition last night.

He tried several, but they were nowhere near strikes, and most bounced.

I imagine he was in no way mentally ready to pitch that inning and had to warm up in a hurry.  Learning experience I hope.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

My aren't you cheery...and after a win like that.

Scandinavian temperament. You know me: I'll stop bitching when I'm dead.

In the last 7 games, the Astros have allowed 34 runs; the pen has been charged with 14 of those (I don't know how many inherited runners got charged to starters). Frankly, I thought it was worse than that, and if you look at it simply on a pro-rated innings-pitched basis, the pen probably allowed runs at about the same rate as the starters. But the offense is going to have to do a lot of work if the defense is going to average 4.85 runs allowed for any length  of time.

I had consoled myself after the top of the ninth by remembering I had Ryan Madson on my Mihoba fantasy team and at least I would get points for a save.
