Which is more insulting Roy only getting 3 first place votes, or the fact that he was on only 13 of the 32 ballots?

There really is almost no justification for Carpenter over Oswalt.

They were almost statistically identical.  They're a coin toss.

Same record and Oswalt had a better ERA. Carpenter tanked at the end of the season while Oswalt was terrific. Oswalt gave up fewer unearned runs. Oswalt played in more of a hitters park. What criteria are the voters using here? Trevor Hoffman? He threw 60 innings and blew 5 saves.

To me the difference among all the pitchers was Oswalt's September stretch run performance. In a season where there is no clear cut winner, nor even a debate among hands-down deserving candidates, in my mind the performance under pennant race pressure jumps up.

I take great pride in the fact that the Astros had a part in fucking up Carpenter's bid.  He had all but locked it up prior to that last series against the Good Guys...and of course prior to Mike-fuck'n-Cameron's double down the right field line.  It was at that moment that I actaully thought..."They can do this".

Trevor Hoffman???  WTF???  63 innings. WOW.  Should not be a canidate for this award.  Nothing against him or his pitching, but that is lame.  Check 2004, when DQ won his 7th.  Check Lidge's numbers and tell me how they compare.  Nevermind, I'll do it for you:

Year TM  W L G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO SV HLD BLSV ERA
Lidge
2004 Hou 6 5 80 0 0 0 94.2 57 21 20 8 30 157 29 17  4  1.90
Hoffman
2006 SD  0 2 65 0 0 0 63.0 48 16 15 6 13  50  46 0  5  2.14

Was his votes just because he surpassed Lee Smith?

Yeah. An outstanding career achievement candidate in a year where there were no outstanding season achievements.

Carp allowed 5 more runs over the course of 220 innings each.  Not statistically significant.

Yes, 2 fewer unearned runs.  You're really splitting hairs.

Oswalt played in more of a hitters park.

And Webb played it one of the biggest hitters' parks in the league - the diffenece between The Bank and The Juice Box is bigger than Juice Box to Busch III.

I really am and no matter which way I look at it Carpenter looks like a worse pick than Oswalt. What criteria did the voters use that made Carpenter the better pick.

I'm talking about Oswalt vs. Carpenter. I made no mention of Webb.

You're ignoring the McCarver factor.  After all the drooling in the broadcast booth during the playoffs, you would have thought the CoArds were an all-time all-star team.  Let's see ... Tim never played for Houston, did he?

But the voters, rightfully, did, which was a big factor in their respective finish.  Oswalt did get more first place votes than Carpenter, 3 to 2.

Just as Brandon Webb received the call that he won the Cy Young Award, a few Astros insiders familiar with Roy Oswalt's body of work told the right-hander he was robbed.

"Brad Ausmus just called me and told me the same thing," Oswalt said.
The Link

also,  "Oswalt, who's on his way to Illinois to go hunting with Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, was surprised Webb won the Cy Young."

which is interesting because,
...some in the industry and close to the organization wouldn't be stunned to see Peavy traded, citing the Padres' penchant for dealing players as their heaviest salaries come due; the emergence of starters Chris Young and Clay Hensley, who combined will make about $1 million; and Peavy's shoulder flare-ups in May and in a second consecutive September
The Link

Traded, from the Padres, who need a 3b.  Also, both of their favorite salad dressing is ranch.  I just got a chill.

Alas, the Friars traded Josh Barfield for their shiny new 3B Of The Future.

Towers says. ?We were looking for a young third baseman we could control and they just weren't out there. We've had a pretty good idea how this free-agent market is going to be, and it's soft for third basemen.

Ouch, says Aubrey Huff's agent.
