I'm annoyed when people tap their brakes for no reason. Also when they wont pass or move over. That annoys the hell out of me. Or two cars driving side by side 5 miles below the speed limit on a two lane interstate with a parade of cars behind them that only want to drive the speed limit. Fuck them! Those people are total assholes.

Compare Tom Herman's three year progression with Matt Ruhle's progression at Baylor. Also consider that Ruhle had to recruit with the label of Rape U hung on the school and also that he went 1-11 his first year.

I'm sure it is how they have been advised but I'm bothered that there has been no comment from the Astros players.

Advancement in wireless connectivity and camera technology is such that It would be pretty easy to be able to set up a tiny discretely concealed spy cam that could be monitored on a tablet or phone. That is how any savvy up-to-date tech would set it up. And it would be virtually non-detectable and fool proof. Hell, you could signal the batter with a mild electric shock or vibration of a bracelet or neck chain or behind some tape or in a sock. No need to fuck with an audible signal.  It is silly that such a forward thinking team would choose to tap into the network feed from the CF cam and watch it in the tunnel while sitting two feet from a 36 inch monitor. In fact the same monitor they used to watch replays on.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 18, 2019, 07:24:56 am »
I don't, technically.  That big fucking monitor sure looks suspicious, though.
Every club has a monitor like that with two people sitting at it (one a MLB rep) to watch replays to help decide if a review request is needed. It's not suspicious, it's normal. Notice the two chairs?

Fiers has everything to gain.  His goal in life is to stick it to the Astros.  He's achieved that now.
So lets say his motivation is pure spitefulness. Spiteful petty assholes aren't normally held up as paragons of truth and virtue. I also tend to think Fiers, being a non hitter, might be confused about how the Astros went about hitting. I really want to believe Beltran, though.

17
Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 16, 2019, 11:10:40 am »
I am waiting for a more reliable source than Fiers to say the Astros used cameras in game to steal signs. Beltran said no.
Who between Fiers and Beltran is lying and what is their motivation? Fiers really had nothing to gain by coming forward. I don't buy that he did it because it was weighing so damn heavily on his heart he had to say something--you know, for the young guys starting out trying to make a big league roster who got fucked by the sign stealing. Beltran has something to lose, I guess. I really want to hear what Cora is going to say.

18
Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 15, 2019, 02:39:32 pm »
This is my main source of anger also. The Astros and their achievements are getting crucified by bloodthirsty media speculation or by other players. Only Beltran has responded. Maybe MLB, Crane, or Luhnow instructed Astros players not to comment, but the Astros’ lack of an emphatic response is hurting them.
All those Altuve at bats that drove you nuts were really his attempt to throw the hounds off the trail. You know, part of the cover up.

No no, they do it “electronically” and they purposely don’t steal signs “electronically” when there is no one on, it helps maintain the ruse.

Do I wish Hinch had left Greinke in? Yes. Did I think putting in Harris was a misteak? No. I'm so used to my Houston teams getting beat in extraordinary and disappointing fashions, that this loss wasn't that bad for me. Most of those past losses have been by the Cougars and the Oilers but the Astros and Rockets have had their share of contributions too. Washington made the plays and got the hits that they needed to win. I take my hat off to them.

That's my phrase, not Cowherd's. I think Cowherd was attempting to be conciliatory, given the outcome. Balls hit hard at opposing players is a facet of the game and makes his argument. Hinch can't hit for his team. Here's the segment in question.

Not clicking. Cowherd knows less about baseball than any any given poster here. Long ago I quit listening to him, and Smith, and Bayless, and all those other guys who make a living yelling at each other about sports.

Talk Zone / Team of the Decade?
« on: November 01, 2019, 09:27:32 am »
Ben Lindberg of The Ringer makes the argument that it is the Astros.

Quote
In their final form, the Astros surpassed every other collection of talent assembled since 2010, if not since baseball began. Their extreme rebuild set the tone for the teens, providing proof of concept for a model that spread not just within baseball, but to other sports. Between tanking and data-driven development, they were the earliest and most aggressive adopters of this era’s most momentous disruptions in roster construction. As a result, they’re the franchise that every team was or is trying to emulate, and—here’s the historian’s perspective, not the fan’s—the one that will likely seem most synonymous with this moment when we look back in later years.

My disappointment has an overlay of disbelief. Losing all four games at home simply is impossible to wrap my mind around, and the aces pitched three of those. The offense never broke lose at home, which also is incomprehensible. My one huge regret is Greinke’s game not resulting in a win for him and for the team. He was magnificent.
Same here. Losing four home games had never happened before. Why now?

Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5
« on: November 01, 2019, 07:39:32 am »
Wearing the Boras cap instead of the Astros cap in the clubhouse did it for me with him.

From the chron article:

Quote
Cole also explained that the Boras Corp. hat, which had the insignia of his agent, Scott Boras, he wore after Game 7 did not have anything to do with his relationship with the Astros. Cole had been wearing the hat for three months, mostly on days that he started, as “a good luck charm.”

Not saying it an excuse or wasn't orchestrated but it sort of explains why he had the cap on there and then.

I hate being critical of the guy but his AB in the bottom of the 5th with Reddick on third and Springer on second with one out.... 3 pitch strike out... made me want to kick something.

Nice recovery on his part to chill on the bull shuffle when he started it. JV would dot him if he kept it up.

Rendon is a very, very good hitter.

$33.3MM is not even Zach Greinke money.  Strasburg and Scherzer are making $38MM, and Strasburg is set to make $45MM in 2023.  It will take AT LEAST $45MM/year, and someone may throw $50MM per at him.  I will be gobsmacked if his total deal is less than $350MM
Scherzer signed a 7 year $210MM plus $50MM bonus, Strasburg signed for 7 years at $175MM plus $10MM bonus. I would be gobsmacked if Cole got $350MM total. Especially since I just heard on MLB Network that Strasburg is the greatest World Series pitcher baseball player since Sandy Kofax ever.

A couple hundred million dollars will go a long way to reducing that social pressure.  Think about that for a minute.
$200,000,000 ... that buys a lot of insulation.
I'm guessing he'll get between $33.3 million and $37.5 million per year. I think the Astros will have to go 6 years to get him. However, of course, I have no real idea.

My mom had lung cancer a few years ago and everywhere we went they asked, How the hell did you catch it this early? Well, the answer is, both of her sons are assholes and got tired of her relentless coughing which turned out to have nothing to do with the cancer. Got a scan, saw the tumor, lopped it off, here we are.
My mom fucked up her shoulder one morning when she was moving chairs around for her Sunday school class. She had to have it operated on and they found a small cancerous tumor in her right lung looking a pre-op x-ray. She had recently just been declared cancer free the previous year from breast cancer. That was after a lot of chemo. Anyway the lung cancer was very early and they got it all. She has one kidbney, hell she's been operated on 20 some odd times in her life. She's tougher than most.

How do you characterize Altuve's blunder - stupid, selfish? Given the game situation and the skewed risk-reward ratio, there is no justification for the steal attempt. It's not just that he forfeited the go ahead run for his team, but how many more stress pitches could the Astros have put on Strasburg? Hard to gauge how much damage he caused to his team's chance to win the game.
What if he makes it. Are you still asking the question? I'm sure in his mind it was worth the risk. Rarely does a game rest on one play and you can't assume that everything that happens following said play happens in the same sequence. That being said he still fucked up for being throw out.

We are also offended and embarrassed by the actions of this now ex-employee. As an organization we will not tolerate such offensive stupidity.

If I were Crane or Ryan I would fire Taubman this morning for not being able to control himself and creating an unneeded distraction. His lack of situational awareness is only matched by his insensitivity. I don't care how smart someone, his value is negated if he can't behave properly in crucial moments. This has almost nothing to do with Osuna, it has to do with an indiscretion of Luhnow's top assistant. The fact that Taubman behavior was totally inappropriate and offensive. I'm not easily offended but Taubman's outburst offends me.

Thanks Ty...on a side-note although their "stadium" catches a lot of flack (and rightfully so) I did enjoy a game there with my FIL while on vacation with my family.  It was 2013 so you know I'm a die hard.  Although we got blanked 5-0 with 5 lousy hits (one from Altuve of course and one other by some guy named JD Martinez, not sure whatever happened to him) we did enjoy the Ted Williams museum, it was really well done.  Also, because the locals only show up for Yanks or Sox I was able to get tix dirt cheap just a few rows behind the Stros dugout and literally parked across the street and was inside and almost to our seats in less than a few minutes.  I kept looking around for Allen Funt...is this for real???

I was just a 13 year old knuckle-head when my brother brought home Hot Rats by Frank Zappa. I listened to that record and my whole outlook on music change forever. "Peaches en Regalia"really opened my ears to instrumental orchestrations beyond the typical rock and roll or pop music structure. I listened to that album everyday after school for months. I was talking about Zappa with my uncle (the guy introduced me to trumpet) a little later and he told me if I like that, I should check out Miles Davis' new album Bitches Brew.

So my first real introduction listening to Miles came in 1970. It wasn't until several years later, during the fusion boom of the 70s, that I started checking out his back catalog, and really getting into Jazz in general. So for me, I have always considered Bitches Brew his benchmark album. Everything that came before served to inform what he communicated with Bitches Brew and everything after was an extention of what he explored with Bitched Brew.

Kind of Blue is an all time great record and I love it, but Bitches Brew is always gonna be my favorite Mile Davis record. Also I totally and completely agree with chuck's comments about Bob Marley. I still listen to Marley often but don't really follow reggae music much currently.

The Cardinals radio PBP guy Mike Shannon might...I repeat MIGHT...give nadir Milo a run for his money in terms of mispronouncy and incoherent commentary.
I liked listening to Shannon when I lived in St Louis, he really does know baseball. He used to drink a lot of "cool frosty ones" during the game and his speech would noticeably get more and more slurred as the game wore on. I imagine now he starts out slurring.

I understand not wanting to make it easy for fans to get drunk and then leave the ballpark drunk and drive home and have wreck and kill innocent victims. I don't understand a $10 dollar hot dog. As far as I know no one ever got killed by a guy that ate too many chili cheese dogs, except maybe the guy that ate too many. I like to do my drinking and eating before the game. Throwing a quality pitch, even if they know it's coming, can still beat guys. Prime example is ALCS game 7 against those damn Yankees, McCullers threw 26 straight curveballs. Everyone knew the curve was coming, McCann wasn't even bothering to put down a sign, and yet they still couldn't hit it.

Yeah, you still have to hit it. Everyone knew Bob Gibson was gonna throw a fastball. Few could hit it.

Glasnow was holding his glove different for fast balls than he was for curves.

420
Anyone having a goddamn awful time with fubo.tv? The UI says the game is over and if I reach the "end" of the stream, it stops.
Mine is working fine.

421
Altuve puts an exclamation point on it.

422
Betting he’ll come out for the 8th.
I hope you win that bet.

423
Alvarez is having a tough patch. Hope he snaps out soon.

424
Bad swings, bad at bats, no life.  Their letting the Rays hang around when they need to punch them in the throat.
Hopefully it's the calm before the storm and the Rays of Tampa Bay season will soon be quelled.

425
I'm getting a little queasy about how the Astros bats just suddenly died.
The need to get rekindled.

426
These new post season balls have more drag. That's not a conspiracy. Seeing a lot more warning track outs.

427
And gives up a homer to his high school Geometry teacher.
Probably only on the Rays because the Jays decided to play Cavan full time at second. Thanks, Craig.

428
Gotta buckle down now.

429
Sixteen down 14 to go. Carlos is getting closer to 30 ABs.

430
Bregman stops on the way to the dugout to tip Correa off on something about Glasnow.
Good pickup.

431
Yes! That is what not fucking around looks like. Still a long way to go.

432
Glasnow got off to an amazing start this year but his career numbers are pedestrian at best. Granted he is just 25.

433
For whatever reason, the Astros simply can't throw strikes to Choi.
They're not gonna let Choi beat them?

434
85% capacity

Probably 75%
Worst possible time to start a weekday game in Houston during the school year.

Rosenthal described Roberts as comfortable in the games that go according to plan, but unable to make adjustments.
There's no place for sentiment in a MLB manager's mind. That was/is Roberts' fatal flaw.

I like the Cardinal strategy of scoring 10 runs in the first inning. The Astros should steal it.

Looks like the Cardinals got this one won.

444
Joe Harris.

445
A double play would be cool.

446
Choi has been a fucking defensive whiz at 1B this series.
Yes he has.

447
Good play by Choi.

448
I hope you're right
Well, if they quit fucking around and play the way their capable of, they might be able to make a game of it. 12 more outs.

449
I'm amazed at the Astros lack of effort. Lack of pride in their work.

450
They just need to quit fucking around with the at bats. And pitch better.

451
It's fucking embarrassing how much they're sucking off the crowd of the team that had the second lowest regular season attendance this year.
But they won their state.

452
Someone needs to find the switch that got turned off and turn it back on.

453
Just barely a whimper.

454
When things are not going your way, things don't go your way.

455
I'll give them a call.
Tell them to try harder. Or at least try.

456

457
I decided not to post during the game today.

Crazy week. One guys defense outscored another guys whole team.

460
Frank Thomas looks like he ate a whole bunch of Nugenix. And a whole bunch of other stuff too.

461
Well that is my baseball watching done for the week, enjoy the rest of the series folks.
Are you on rations?

462
What's wrong with Alex Radriguez's face?

463
Will "Fucking" Harris

464
This is hard to watch.

465
Need a K and a DP.

466
WTF Choi can do that? Just step across the plate?

467
That’s the same fucking pitch he rung up Bergman on.
HPU has been consistently inconsistent.

468
Cole is mad at himself for not getting out of the inning. He shouldn't be but that how competitors like him are.

477
Handy Diaz has large biceps

478
Poor communication leads to two more runs.

479
That at bat was absolutely embarrassing.
His next one will be better.

480
Is Glasnow crying?

481
Professional hitter.

482
Jose did good that at bat.

483
I made it an inning and then I switched to Ford and Sparks because of AJ Dickshitter.

484
I'm Fubo'ing this (Fox and Dish aren't speaking to each other).

TV is one pitch behind the radio.

My options are to stick with it or watch the game in silence.

There's no way I'll disengage the Worrell button.
If you listen on MLB AtBat you can pause the Astros radio audio to synch with the TV broadcast.

The Astros Have Brought the Murderers’ Row Lineup Back to Baseball

Quote
The core was just as hot, if not hotter, after the All-Star break, from which the most absurd statistic about the Houston offense emerges: In the season’s second half, the Astros had five of the top 11 qualified hitters in the majors. No other team had more than one such player that high up the leaderboard.

And here's the thing I swim upstream on - I don't hate Braun. Never have. I don't know why. I mean, I hate motherhood and puppies. Dandelions in the gentle breeze. Hate it all. Braun? For who knows what reason, that idiot just doesn't bother me. Should he? Sure. Do I understand why everyone else hates him? Of course. It's just one of those weird smudges in the rear view mirror I guess. I don't know.
We all have our lapses in judgement but Braun?!?!? What he did as an adult is far more offensive to me than what Hader did as a kid. With Braun it was not so much his juicing or lying about it, it was when he tried to deflect blame by implicating the innocent sample collector.

There is really nothing to not like about Yelich other than the team he plays for.
