Kimbrel to the Cubs.
-
Single, walk, single...Astros load the bases with one out...
-
White with a sac fly...1-0 Astros
-
Everybody tags and advances. Talk about no respect for your arm...
-
Stubbs a little anxious there...swung at two pitches out of the zone.

I just texted Drew Corleone that. Great minds.

Straw seems like the kind of guy that could learn how to juggle and ride a unicycle after one or two attempts.

He's probably a scratch golfer.
-
He's probably a scratch golfer.
He's now a big league strikeout victim. First of his career.
-
I’ll bet he is one nervous mofo at SS tonight.
-
Vogelbach looks like he's thicker than he is wide. And he's pretty wide.
-
Man I wish Stubbs would stop dropping to his knees to catch a pitch. He just cost a strikeout on Seager, who eventually singles.

Maybe he did. It was an 0-2 zone.
-
Also, Jesus, is Stropoll retarded.

That's strike three with Max Stassi back there.
-
Tyler White makes me sad. Maybe he needs a new number, get away from that 13.

Mariners catcher is on his knees constantly. Stubbs is just short.

Short has nothing to do with it. Stubbs is just a bad receiver who costs his pitchers strikes with his constant inability to keep his body still.

Yes on that one pitch, but all in all, he is much quieter tonight.

He's been reading the game zone critiques and making adjustments.

Everything I’ve ever read from scouts about him is that he’s excellent behind the plate.

Right, because the Astros would draft, nurture, retain and promote just such a catcher to the big leagues. The Astros of Mike Fast and catcher framing.
Short has everything to do with it. Your complaints are almost invariably on low pitches that aren't called strikes. He sets up like any other catcher but his target is substantially lower.
I'm not saying it isn't a problem that he needs to correct for, just that that looks to me like the primary issue.

I'll file this little nugget away for future reference.

No.

Everything I've seen of him is he's really bad at receiving a pitch. But fair enough, the Astros think he's good enough to promote, so we can't critique.

I do not think he is bad at anything, but he moves around too much. I do not think being short affects that. Some of that may be being hyped up. As I said, I think he has been much quieter tonight.
-
So this sequence to Haniger, Stubbs looks like a completely different guy behind the plate.
And that was quite the play by Peacock to stab that ball.

The point is that if he’s been very good up to now and the only thing that’s changed is being in the bigs then perhaps the problem isn’t a general lack of catching mechanics.

I will say he's quieter tonight. His first game gave me a headache.
And he just got a call on Encarnacion. Maybe he's reading the GZ between innings!

I have no idea what he looked like in the minors. And frankly don't care. I can only go by what I see in the games I watch.

He has been much better tonight. It seems that he’s nosier with breaking balls but quieter with fastballs.

I could use another twin killing here...
-
Well crap....Mariners fill the bags...nobody out...
-
Big punch out!
-
Nice play by Bregman to come to the plate...take note Narvaez...
-
Well shitfuck.
2-run single...2-1 Mariners
-
Haniger drilled...bases loaded again
-
Sure would be nice to have done anything at all against a guy with an almost 5 ERA so far.
-
Nice strikeout to end the inning. Gotta go back to work.
-
Lead off double wasted.
-
Well that sucked.
-
Bring back Martin. Jesus Fuck, what a shit pair of appearances.
-
FFS! Another HR from AAA pitching!
-
This is pathetic.
-
Might be able to go to bed at a reasonable time tonight...

Rodgers has no business on a major league roster.

Not fun.

Well....that shit happens.
That was disgusting, beat the fuck out of them tomorrow.

How did Straw do at short?

How did Straw do at short?
Fair. He was understandably nervous and looked uncomfortable.

How did Straw do at short?
Awkward and adequate.

I missed all the pregame discussion, and most of the sound during the game while I was able to keep my eyes open...has Straw never played SS before? Or has it just been a while? Has he ever played 2B or other infield position in the minors? If not, that's got to be quite the challenge.
Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

He has been playing SS in RR. OF some, SS some.

The Astros are trying to make him as versatile as possible. He's got the arm for short, unlike Kemp, so they've been giving him time there in RR as Jim said.

If you can turn Straw in to a Marwin type that can play 5-6 different places without a huge down-tick in skill over the normal guy, he's going to be groomed in to the next Marwin.
Straw batting 9th on the big league team is a tremendous weapon.

That's a pretty good Straw-man argument.

Time split this year almost equally between CF & SS, but never before as a pro.

Get out.

I've been sorely tempted to make any number of last straw comments but as you will appreciate I am known for my discretion.
