That game was very much like sex with a Cub fan: quick, ugly, and rather unsatisfying.

Let’s get one thing clear from the start: I don’t care what his stats this year are, Carlos Zambrano is a very good pitcher.  With that being said, the Astros looked completely clueless last night.  Zambrano looked very good, but I think we know this “offense” too well to believe it was all his doing.

Woody started of with an advantage in that the wind was blowing in.  Dear God, I wouldn’t want to see a Woody game with the wind blowing out.  A 2 out double in the 2nd was followed by a single to put the Cubs way up, 1-0.  Zambrano drove a Woody mistake out in the next inning, and it looked like trouble for the good guys’ “#3 starter”.  Fortunately – and in honesty, as he seems quite able to do – Woody settled down and gave the Houston side 7 strong innings, with Wheeler handling 8th inning duty.

A note on the above: in this recapper’s view, El Caballo made a rather poor play on the double, and with 2 out and the small Wrigley outfield, would have been worth a diving stab rather than having his back turned to play the carom when the ball was 2 feet away.  Just my opinion.

Unfortunately, the offense never mounted a hint of a rally.  Three hits?  Three goddamn hits?  (Ah, who cares, nobody’s reading anyway.)  A Little Bear error brought home the only run in the 8th.  But for the rest of the game, most any baserunner was erased by DP.

Oswalt gets another chance to bitch about the support while giving up leads tomorrow at home, 7:05 first pitch.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
