I'm the Big 4-0 today!
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:05:12 am »
My parents used to say I'd be surprised at how fast time passed. I didn't believe them. Now I do!

It's hard to believe that I am 40 years old today. I started college 22 years ago. J.R. Richard pitched in the first game I saw live. I remember watching "The Brady Bunch" BEFORE syndication (but, thankfully, not after).

I've got a lot of grey hair and I think I've earned every one of them.

Happy Birthday to me.

Happy Birthday.

I wished I had a cool first game story.  But my Dad took me to 10 games before I turned 1.

Happy Birthday. For me, 40 didn't seem as big a deal as 30.

Hell, I thought you were 40 a long time ago.

But all seriousness aside...Happy Birthday.  Party On!
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

40 wasn't so bad for me. It's the creakiness creeping up on me in the 4 years since that's annoying.

Happy Birthday!

Life's too short to drink bad beer.  And it's even shorter when you're 40!

Just spending the evening at dinner with my kids. I'm treating myself to catching the Astros play in Philly Monday. Look for me on TV. I'll probably be wearing my cowboy hat.

"I'll probably be wearing my cowboy hat."

Just remember, they'll be laughing at you, not with you.  Good thing you didn't wear that to the game we went to in DC.  I would have had to sit a few seats away.  Happy 60th birthday to you, Melvin.  You don't look a day over 50.

Dude, you should plead the 5th.  I was not the one wearing the cap...

Hope you had a good evening with the kids watching the Astros win.  Good times.

Happy birthday, Melvin.

I agree.  After 16 (driver's license), 18 (allowed to drink - legally, I mean), 21 (the other offically sanctioned odds and ends of adulthood), and 25 (auto insurance goes down, also the age when you start to realize teenage girls are probably out of your reach from now on), none of 'em mean all that much.

If you are real lucky, you'll have profligately misspent your youth, drank and smoked prodigiously, made absolutely no long range plan beyond who to hit on at that night's party, and didn't give a flying fuck about anything, least of all yourself... and then came to one day on the other side of 40 and realized you had a great wife and kids, good job, means, hair (none of it grey yet), and a reasonable facsimile of a physique still.  And, your 40-something wife still looked good to you, too.  And some of her friends even still hit on you sometimes; you demurred if you had any sense, but there's no law against having one's ego stroked from time to time, as far as I know.  Yet.

Happy birthday to you.  Forty-plus is great, man.  I absolutely positively would not go back, even if given the chance.

I've always heard that your 40's are by far the best years of your life.

I can only speak for myself, but yes.  I can still do (most of) the things I could as a youngster, but without all the stress, because my experience gives me a long view and a sense of detachment I just didn't have when I was younger and it seems more desparate.

I do think being able to enjoy one's forties hinges on what one did in one's twenties.  I have friends my age who are not enjoying it much at all, I think because they feel like they missed something way back when, and now they are anxious they'll never get it, whatever "it" was/is.  Your typical middle-age crisis, in other words.

It's really kind of pathetic; but I do understand it.  And a lot of how one ends up is just luck or providence, I suppose.  All I am saying is, if you do it right and things break your way, being in one's forties is really, really cool.

You never could have convinced me of that twenty or even ten years ago, though.
