Beer and Queso / Re: College Football 2019
« on: November 25, 2019, 04:23:25 pm »
Let me clear about Tom Herman. He proved that I know nothing about picking coaches. I wanted him in Baton Rouge, but I'm so tickled that I was wrong. Herman played the two schools against each other. I want Texas to return to prominence because I think that college football is better when Texas is strong (I maintain the same things about Michigan and USC).

I think that Texas is better than 6-5. Texas played LSU tough. I wrote after that game being highly complimentary of your QB, who I think is an exciting player. Will Herman be successful? Time will tell. However, let's just say that he's off to a bumpy start in a place with little patience (except for Mack Brown, who you should have fired at least three years prior to when you did) for mediocre results. Query how this impacts recruiting. I guarantee you that it will have some adverse effect on recruiting.

I am elated and highly surprised by Orgeron's success. I mean he was 10-25 at Ole Miss (where it's impossible to win except for if you're cheating or Johnny Vaught is the coach). He's running things like a CEO and hiring (and paying) some of the brightest minds in college football. It will be interesting to see if we can retain Joe Brady. If I have to choose which to retain, either Brady or Aranda, I'm keeping Brady. LSU is winning despite a swiss cheese defense.
You're so annoying

I'll just add that I believe every contender has a system in place to steal signs electronically.

And when the vice principal called to say that our youngest boy was in the office because he turned the lights off in the bathroom and freaked out his fellow first graders, my response wasn't "you can't prove anything,  you fascist!"  And I didn't turn him out for the coyotes either.

Well done.

It seems like they cheated.  I wish they hadn't, or if everyone was doing it that the story was that everyone was doing it.  If that banging wasn't the result of using video then why hasn't Hinch or someone explained it?  I realize I'm not a lawyer.  This isn't court.  If this was all happening to any other team I wouldn't think twice about believing it.  Maybe I'm naive.  I'll go fuck myself.

I'd love Limey's take too.  I thought THIS article was informative, and it's worth a click for the photo alone.  They predict a new general election.

Quote relevant to this thread:
Quote
While, from the perspective of this non-British observer, Brexit seems like a very bad idea, the arguments of many Remainers and People’s Vote proponents also often seem to boil down to: The voters did something dumb, so it shouldn’t count. As an American in 2019, I certainly sympathize with the sentiment, but whatever that argument is, it’s not “democratic.”

If only.   Time Warner Cable and DISH Network are the two largest ones yet to join the party.  So for Cable TV customers along the I-35 Texas corridor, new baseball fans are still being forced to become Rangers fans.    That, or watch the Astros opponents' team broadcasts on Stream2Watch.
Thanks for that link.  The sites I used to use haven't been working, so I've only been able to watch when they play the Rangers.  I've listened to a lot of games, but I'd much rather watch on the laptop.  Time Warner needs to get their shit together.

It was a good game.

Jungmann gave up his first run of the season with two outs in the fifth.  22.2 scoreless innings before that.  A Cardinal hit a triple with two outs, and the next batter blooped one over second.  Texas scored two in the bottom of the inning and never gave up the lead.

Jungmann has one walk and 27 Ks so far this year.

I went yesterday.  Jungmann is a badass.  He threw a complete game 5 hitter, and just one of those after the third inning.

The seventh inning was interesting.  The Horns loaded the bases with a HBP and two bunts.  The next two batters struck out, and it looked like Maryland might get out of it.  The next three batters walked.

I'm curious, have those flaming the offsides rule in soccer ever actually played the sport competitively?  I haven't gotten the impression that players and coaches think the rule is silly.
I admit I know very little about soccer.  Please, help me understand.  I was under the impression that offsides is meant to stop a player from just hanging out around the goal and waiting for a fast break.  That isn't an issue when the ball is ten yards from the goal.

Why is offsides a good rule?  What does it prevent?

Not unlike a side judge eyeballing where the football ends up at the point the ball carriers knee hits the dirt, spotting a different ball that he's carrying, and then using chains to make an exact determination.

The linesman blew the call - it was an understandable mistake given the play.
The rule is the problem, not the call.

ETA:  The call was a problem too, but I agree that it's an understandable mistake.

I'm not positive, but I think UT was the home team in only 2 of the 6 games they played in Austin between the regional and super-regional.  I don't know why earning the right to host does not also mean you earn the right to be the home team.

Here's another I just came across:

"CF Michael Bourn, who had hit eighth or led off this season, was put in the second spot for the first time this season. "The idea was to finally get Bourn to the top," Cooper said. "Maybe it's just that time. I don't know. I'm just grasping to try to get some consistency with our lineup and the production."
(Yahoo! Sports)

Maybe it's just me, but changing the order every game might not be the best way to achieve that consistency.  At least he admits he's grasping.

I'm not criticizing the current lineup, btw.  I like it too.

Me likey the batting order.

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere, but I thought Cooper's comments on the matter are worth repeating:

"I'm looking for sparks wherever I can find them," Cecil Cooper said. "Tejada has been swinging it really great up at the top, but he's got to be an RBI guy for us. "I just put him up there (second) to hopefully get him going. Now he's really going. Maybe I've waited too late. I don't know, maybe I'll second guess myself. But we needed to get him going, and he is really going now pretty good now and is one of our most consistent hitters."
(Yahoo! Sports)

Seems to me he doesn't know when to stop talking.

Yeah, but every year one of the top 64 teams gets left out due to the automatic bids from the weaker conferences.  No one seems to mind that.  It would be no different in football.
Teams don't get left out because their conference already has too many teams in the tourney, but I see what you're saying.
If my favorite team was the fiftieth best team in the nation and didn't make the tournament of 65, I'd be pissed. But I'd be much more angry if my team was third best and didn't make the tournament of 12.

That happens every year in basketball, yet everyone raves about how great March Madness is.
March Madness is great, and the fifteen+ best teams in the nation always make it.

Beer and Queso / Re: Muschamp to succeed Brown at Texas
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:35:57 pm »
Your goal is to find the national champion - how upset can someone be if they didn't even manage to win their own conference (i.e. you already know someone in the conference is better than them).
I understand what you're saying, but using this season as an example, OU has a great chance to win the BIG XII and they lost to Texas.  If there were playoffs this year, and UT didn't make it but a 7-4 Sun Belt champion Troy did, I'd have a problem with it.
Still beats the BCS though.

130
Beer and Queso / Re: Muschamp to succeed Brown at Texas
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:14:38 pm »
If you have 8 12 team conferences there won't be any (sustained) weak conferences.
You may be right, but there will always be conferences that are weaker than others, just as there are weaker divisions now.  Is there any doubt that Texas, TT, or OU would be in the conference championship game if they played in the north?  IMO, the future playoffs shouldn't exclude the second best team in the nation just because they play in the same conference as the first best.
I understand why others would disagree with me.  It is important to keep the regular season relevant.

131
Beer and Queso / Re: Muschamp to succeed Brown at Texas
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:01:16 pm »
set up a playoff where the winner of every conference gets an automatic bid.
That would reward teams for playing in weak conferences.  In that scenario, Texas and OU could never make the championship.  IMO, if they are the two best teams, then they should play each other for the championship at the end of the season.

ETA:
Unless I'm misinterpreting you, and you mean all conference winners would get an automatic berth and there would be others too.  In that case, we're talking a lot of teams.  They would have to shorten the season by several games to make that happen, and teams that aren't likely to make the playoffs very often would probably have a problem with that.

From the bottle:

An Old World Dunkelweizen brewed with Texas peaches and roasted pecans.  The malty flavors of this dark wheat ale are enhanced through the use of malted barley and wheat.  And Krausening ensures a smoothness that makes the subtle peach and pecan flavors all the more satisfying.

I don't have a fancy review for you, but my first impression is that the peach is anything but subtle.

One hour every night?  That sucks!  When do they help around the house, eat, bathe, do other homework, and play outside?  But then again, I'm not a reader, never have been.  How ironic that I couldn't spend an hour reading a book, but could spend hours reading this stuff.
My mistake.  It's a half hour, which is still way too much for some of my students with the responsibilities they have at home.  I'm pretty understanding about it, and in reality it doesn't hurt their overall average much to not do it.

arky, the guy was asked what middle school kids read, and he brought up their socioeconomic status and said that the lower status kids spend most of their time on vowel sounds,
MUCH of our time.  Not more than half, but a lot.  Do you not think it's important that they learn the vowel sounds?  My point that a lot of my class time in some of my classes is spent on scripted programs.  It's not my favorite part of the day, but I do what the experts tell me will help.  Maybe they should have consulted you.

Quote
but the honors kids read "better stuff."
Right.  My "honors" students, who read on grade level, get more options.  That's a problem?

Quote
he then said, in a way that suggested his disappointment, that when he brings these lower kids to the library all they want to do is read sports books, graphic novels, and biographies.
I have no problem with what they check out.  My disappointment lies in the fact that they don't read at home.  We require one hour of reading a night, and their parents are supposed to initial a paper saying they read.  I know for a fact many of my students' parents just sign without any reading taking place.

Quote
he then described as "pretty sad" that some kids go through middle school without finishing a novel.
It isn't?  Novels aren't on the TAKS test.  I don't like the system, but I do work in it.

Quote
my point is that everything he lamented is the job of an english teacher to correct, and so if a kid goes through middle school hating english class, hating reading, and not finishing a novel then that is an indictment on the teacher.
When did I ever say my students hated English class or reading?  It's sad they don't do it more on their own. I realize you think it's my fault they don't.  Most of these kids have challenges I couldn't have fathomed at their age.

Quote
i guarantee you that if a teacher is intuitive enough, and is sufficiently trained to differentiate his or her instruction, then there will be no gap in what two given students can achieve.
You must be an awesome teacher.  It would be nice to work in a district that gives as much freedom as you enjoy.

you do realize that it's, you know, YOUR JOB to get your students, "very low socioeconomic status" or not, to appreciate reading and not just beat them over the head with vowel sounds?  if "some" make it through middle school without finishing a novel, it's your responsibility.  your sighing, 'kids today..." attitude helps in no ways.
Wow.  You totally nailed my attitude about my job 100%.

I mentioned their family situation so HH didn't think I taught a resource class when I mentioned our third grade reading level.  The vowel sound practice is necessary when you spend the majority of your life speaking another language.  I have district-mandated scripted lessons for some of my classes that have been proven to help struggling readers.  I don't "just beat them over the head with vowel sounds" because it's fun.

It's a pretty different book without it.
The title doesn't make sense without it.  The story would still hold up with a different ending.
In my reading of the book, admittedly a fast, for-fun read, the major themes were loneliness, survival and loss.  I didn't pick up on the McCarthyism, so maybe I need to read it again.  I doubt I will, though.  Most of the  Twilight Zone type short stories in the book's second half were better than I am Legend, IMO.

Out of curiosity, since you are a teacher...what *do* 14-year olds read these days?
For pleasure?  Hard to say.  Most of my sixth graders come from families with very low socioeconomic status.  With about half my classes, we read on a third grade level, and spend much of our time talking about what sounds the different vowels make.
When I take my classes to the library, many of them grab sports books and biographies.  I doubt they get read at home very often.  Graphic novels seem to be pretty popular.
The stuff we read in class would bore the hell out of most kids their age.  In my "honors" class (grade level readers), we get to read some better stuff.  We keep it to short stories and excerpts.  Some of them will read their first novel in seventh grade, and some will make it through middle school without ever finishing one.  It's pretty sad.
Quote
When I was 14 I was in high school, and was required to read everything from Tolkien to Faulkner to D.H. Lawrence.  For my personal reading, I think I was about 14 when I read Farenheit 451, Catcher in the Rye, and Slaughterhouse Five.  I also read things by the likes Philip K. Dick and Arthur C. Clarke.  So what's the norm these days?
I started reading more than most of my peers pretty young.  I got my hands on one of my older sister's S. King books.  I thought it wasn't scary at all, but really cool.  My parents were so happy I was reading that they kept buying them for me.  In high school I read a little bit of everything.  You mentioned some good ones.  The ones that stick out in my mind are Catch-22, On the Road, and pretty much anything by Vonnegut.  There are plenty of others I'll kick myself later for not thinking of.

No.  But we enjoyed the movie.
cool.  I'll probably rent it someday.

Quote
How many 14 year olds would even ask to read Matheson?
Probably very few before the movie came out.  When I was reading it a few weeks ago, many 12 year olds in my class said they wanted to read it.  "It's that Will Smith movie, Mr."
I doubt very many of my students (12 year olds) would have finished it if I'd loaned it out.  Cool that your kid would.

Quote
That's the point, he has a very high reading level (collegiate level) and his interest go beyond what other 14 year olds want to read.  Heck, half of them don't even read.
Which is exactly why my folks let me read whatever I wanted.  I apologize if I came off as judgemental.  I was genuinely curious.  I don't have children yet.

Quote
He hasn't asked about them... yet.  But my answer would be similar to his desire to read "I Am Legend".  Slow down a little, all in good time.
If you don't mind my asking, why don't you think it would be a good idea?  Nightmares?  Matheson is pretty tame.  Most of his stuff was written in the 50s.
Why do you think Stephen King is inappropriate for a teenager?  I only ask because I respect your opinions.

The practice TAKS test is the released test from 2004.  The MOY and the six weeks test are designed to look just like a TAKS test only shorter.
I hardly have time to teach anything.  I'm basically an overpaid babysitter.  The students are so sick of testing that I'll be lucky if any of them try when we take the real thing in April.

Before I simply fly off the handle, I'd like to hear from people who may have been watching more closely than I was. But it sure seemed like Lee gave up immediately out of the box on his third (!) GIDP. And when the Brewers kicked the ball around at second base, anybody who might have been hustling (like Berkman in a previous inning) would have been safe, but Lee was only half-way down the line. Did it look like that to anybody else?
looked that way to me, but Lee wasn't shown.  all i know is, he was barely halfway down the line even after the double clutch

Carlos Lee left the game between the Astros and Padres on Saturday with a strained right hip flexor prior to his at-bat in the third inning. The left fielder's status is listed as day-to-day.

Lee was on deck to bat, but instead, he headed for the tunnel that leads to the clubhouse. Mark Loretta hit in place of Lee and struck out to end the inning.

Lee may have hurt himself sliding into second in an effort to break up a double play in the first inning.

I picked up my HEB's last two sixers last night.  I can't do a fancy description like the advocate review, but I do like it a lot.  It's hoppy.  Not dark at all.  It isn't yellow, but light brown.  Ever had New Belgium's Loft?  This reminds me of that, but I don't have any here to compare it with.  Loft is probably hoppier.

Apparently it was something Millar said on "Best Damn..."
Quote
Before starting Game 6 (of the ALCS). It was about 35 degrees out there at Yankee Stadium, I went around and got a thing of Jack Daniels and we all did shots of Jack Daniels about 10 minutes before the game. And we won Game 6. So Game 7 of course, we had to do shots of Jack Daniels. And we won Game 7, so guess what? I'm glad we won in Game 4 (in the World Series) because these Crown Royal shots and Jack Daniels shots started to kill me. And that's how the Sox did it."

Quote
I wish I'd never opened my mouth," he told ESPN's Peter Gammons. "It was one of those group team things, like shaving our heads last year. What we had was one small Gatorade cup, with a little Jack Daniels in it. We passed it around and everyone symbolically drank out of the same cup, because we are a team. It wasn't as if guys were drunk."

The link I found was some Boston blog, so grain of salt and all that.

It's far from over.  From what I've seen, an infield single a sharp line drive, a mad dash from 1st on a double, a running catch to his left, a wild swing at a ball at his eyes, and some sketchy base running on a hit and run, Pence is still what everyone said he was, a free swinger and a loose cannon in CF.  Luke Scott, the Once and Future Phenom, may be seeing a reduction in playing time if he doesnt shape up.   Pence in right, Burke in center?
Pence in right and Burke in center would be better than Pence in center and Burke in right?
I realize Pence is best in a corner outfield position, but isn't he an upgrade over Burke in center?  Isn't that where the focus should lay for MMP?
Doesn't Burke have experience is right?

Bases loaded, two outs, Berkman lashes one down the RF line. Two runs score easily. For reasons known only to god and Lance, when the ball thrown back into the IF Lance is standing idly somewhere between first and second. Lance gets in a rundown, and Loretta manages to score as the Brewers are preoccupied chasing down Lance. The Brewers didn't even try to make a play on Loretta.

Or, as Milo would explain it, Whooooaaahhhooooaaaahhhoooooaahhhhooooo!
That was great; thanks.  My wife asked why I was laughing, so I read it aloud, and she had a nice laugh too.

My guess it's just an experience issue.  I don't have anything to base my guess on, other than that he clearly has much less experience than the other starters.  I'd be blown away if people in the ORG weren't excited about what he's done so far.

The in progress thing is maddening.  Some Arena Football Coach show I think I heard.  So through 3 games, only 1 hasn't been partly or completely preempted.

As far as the Statesman, I guess that would be more valid if you knew what it said the last couple days for Rangers games.  The ones that showed up on Channel 77 even when the DVR Guide had no prior indication that a game was going to be on.

I couldn't find yesterday's, but Monday's paper showed the Rangers game on TW 77.  I guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.

He also mentioned that we'll probably see the Belle situation more and more with all the guaranteed contracts.  Not many players would retire mid-contract (as Pettitte's agents claimed he would do) just becuase they can't play.  Hard to blame them when contracts are back-loaded.  The result will be lots of players on the ballot just a year or two after they officially retire.

I just got off the phone with someone from the National Baseball Library which is affiliated with the Hall of Fame. According to the guy I talked to, Bagwell will be eligible in 2011.  He said there must be five full years since the last atbat or inning in the field.  Since Bagwell never played last year, it was his first year not active.  2010 will be the fifth, and barring a comeback attempt, he'll be on the ballot in 2011.

Instead of being smart about it, why not respond to what the post points out -- what should Ensberg be doing with pitches way outside the strike zone if he "doesn't need to be taking walks?"

Taking a walk when you're thrown four straight balls is one thing.  Working the count, taking good pitches to hit, just to make the pitcher throw some more, when you've got runners on base, is NOT the same thing.  Ensberg does way too much of the latter.

very true.  perhaps that's what he meant.  it would have been nice if he'd posted as much, instead of "doesn't need to be taking walks."

You can usually just walk up, but if you know when you'll be going, I recommend buying in advance.  The website is a pretty good one; its features allow you to see exactly which seats are available in each section and gives an example view from each section too.  If you walk up, you might get stuck out on the berm, but that isn't exactly a bad thing.

Reports now say their is a possibility he (Backe) could start on Sunday.

Astros .com has Nieve listed as the probable, but they also note:

"The Astros have several options for Sunday, and Nieve is one. Brandon Backe exited his start early with a sprained right elbow Thursday, but he threw only 30 pitches, and he could, if healthy, start Sunday. If not, the Astros could call up a pitcher from the Minor Leagues. A third option is Nieve, the designated "long reliever" who can also serve as a spot starter. Nieve has appeared in two games in relief, allowing two runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings."

So basically it could be anyone.

When I lived in Dallas, I expected Astros games to be pre-empted by Ranger games, even when FSN Guide info indicated it was an Astros game.  I'm in Austin and I expected it to be the other way around but the Rangers get far more coverage on FSN, with Houston getting bumped to "alternate channels".  Drayton better realize that FSN is screwing him over for the Rangers!  Seriously, who likes the Rangers?

In years past, this has not been the case.  I don't know what is going on this year.  They must have a new program director at TWC Austin that is a Rangers fan. Fuck the Rangers.  When they win a pennant or when they put their AAA team in this town, fine, show the Rangers.  Guess it's the new guys on the radio tonight for me. Hell, the game probably won't even be carried on 1300 am tonight. I'll have to buy the mlb audio package again. Fuck!!!!

It will be on 1300, but not until the UT baseball game (6:15 start) is over.  We should get most of the Astros game.  Assuming it's not rained out.

Can't see how this woudl be good for the Astros

I don't think it would be bad.  San Antonio is not in the Astros Nielsen market.  Loss or gain of viewership wouldn't affect their TV contract.  On the other hand, San Antonio is estimated by Neilsen as the 37th largest media market, 760,410 TV homes.  No major league city is lower.  The closest is Cincinnati, 34th, 880,190 TV homes.

Now that is an interesting fact. I think that supports the notion that San Antonio just doesn't quite have the wealth to support a MLB franchise.

At least until they institute revenue sharing.

Is Austin in the Astros Neilson market?  We sure as hell get blacked out on MLB TV.
I just worry that a team in San Antonio would mean no more Astros on free TV for me.

defense all around.  errors are killing this team on a game-to-game basis.  the horns should have swept the weekend series in vegas; instead they were nearly swept.  the two losses and sunday's close call were due to defensive blunders, in the outfield and infield.  they are a fairly young team, and i expect they'll be much improved by the end of the season.

I've got it.  It's pretty fun.  Very similar to MVP 05, but they've redesigned batting and throwing (not pitching).  It takes a while to get used to, but I like it better than the old way (pushing up and tapping a button).  Batting now is similar to golfing on Tiger Woods, if you've ever played that.
One bad thing, IMO, is that they used last year's rosters.  Teagarten is still UT's catcher etc...  Of course, the names are all wrong, but that's easy to fix.

The crowd was great. It thinned out a bit, but the folks who stayed manage to get up and loud for every significant moment in the final ten innings. The folks in my section were on their feet for 90% of the time from the 8th to 18th innings. Except for one middle aged guy who collapsed during the sixteenth inning. He had to be tended to by first aid, but seemed alright, and managed to stick around and smile weakly when Burke nailed it.

Who ever predicted Astros in 5 is a genius. What a great game.
