hey limey, are you a nerd?
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:00:25 am »
maybe this is old news, but this just occurred to me as a major possibility from reading some of your many posts over the years.  perhaps those of you who know him personally can corroborate my hunch.

so are you?  i'm still cool with you if you are.

Does he use pocket protectors and wear horned rimmed glasses?  No.  Will he blabber on endlessly about techno gadgets if prompted?  Yes.

I would by no means classify Limey as a nerd, although he is tech-savvy.  Of course I like to think I am tech-savvy too, so maybe I am a nerd.  Shit, who knows?

I am considered tech-savvy only around the technically illiterate.  I don't have a pocket protector.  I don't need glasses, nor do I wear them as a fashion statement.  I've never played DnD, but I have read Lord of the Rings.  My job involves lots of numbers and I am decently competent with Excel.  I represented my school at soccer, cricket, hockey, swimming, water polo, fives and shooting.  Most of my school qualifications are some form of maths or English.  I was once in the Colour Guard presenting the Air Force Cadet's colours to the Queen, and was awarded a "flying scholarship" by the RAF.  As a cadet I was a drill instructor.  I was also a marksman and have fired a great number of guns including a Browning 9mm, and 9mm sub-machine gun, a Lee Enfield No. 8 (.22), a Lee Enfiield No. 4 (.303), and Bren Gun (7.62 magazine-fed machine gun) and a GPMG (7.62 belt-fed machine gun).  I have flirted with a single-digit handicap at golf, but not recently.  I have had sex (with a lady), but not recently.

Don't know what that makes me, but I can tell you what I am today:  very, very pissed off.

Apparently Limey found out that Marissa Miller is not in this year's Swimsuit Issue.

I remain confused as to the appeal of the SI Swimsuit Edition.  You people have heard of this thing called the internet...right?  There's hot chicks on there not wearing swimsuits.

No, the Swimsuit Issue (and specifically Kathy Ireland) were quite influental in my puberty days.

The first one I remember was in the 70s, with Cheryl Tiegs. That was pretty sexy back then.

I remember in 7th grade our reading class has SI, and that Cheryl Tiegs pic was cut out.  Don't know if the teacher did it or an enterprising student...

Tennis without rackets.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Come on Limey, don't talk about my dad like that!

I doubt Jim would've brought his client to court on a promise of proceedings that were a formality, without having told him that, technically, the case was dismissed due to the lawyer's inability to show last Friday, and so we have to reinstate the case before said formality could occur.

Had reinstatement not been allowed by the judge, my lawyer's competence would not have been the only things hanging by a thread this afternoon.

that is unfuckingbelieveable, Limey.

The silver lining was that (a) it got done; and (b) my immediate desire to pummel the living shit out of my lawyer, coupled with having my brain dragged through the open sewers of the lives of people much less fortunate than myself, made the process that much more bearable.

For some reason I was reminded of this:

Quote
The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

You'd like to think that, but...

I would suggest the nearest equivalent to "nerd" would be "anorak", which is a term coined from the name of the preferred outer garments worn by trainspotters while they stand around on chilly railway station platforms and jot down the serial numbers of trains.  I'm not kidding.  Now "anorak" is a generic term for anyone good at maths or otherwise demonstrating nerdly leanings.

Prince Charles would be a "toff", or "twit".

Today seems like a good day to burn a bridge or two

So, are you an accountant, or a hairdresser?

I'm not banning anyone, I just bust heads and check IDs.

Prince Charles would be a "toff", or "twit".

so which one is the guy from jethro tull:

I guess you decided all by yourself that the guy from Jethro Tull is a nerd/anorak. I think I'd probably rather classify him as a tosser. His fans? Nerds. Hopeless nerds. You fucking paid $75 to watch some freak stand on one leg and play a fucking flute. Jesus. I'd rather watch the Def Leppard guy play a drum solo.

If you think Jethro Tull is bad you should see some of the "Celtic death metal" bands floating around.  Dudes that look like they should be getting dunked in a Renaissance festival booth barking along to flute and violin.  I got into a flamewar with someone because I just couldn't believe they were being serious.

Unfortunately, from that angle you can't see the 18" high Stonehenge set on the stage.

Yeah, it's pretty fucking terrible.  It's like they took every annoying cliche from folk music and melded it with every annoying cliche from metal.
