Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5
« on: October 31, 2019, 10:01:20 am »
To abandon your teammates like that after losing a hard fought World Series in 7 games is horrible.  I honestly won't mind seeing him leave after that.  He fits in perfectly with a team like the Dodgers.  There is still plenty of good pitching to get the job done and make another run.  I think Greinke proved his worth to the team last night.  He stepped up in a big way.  He pitched well and kept them in the game for game 3 as well.

I wish Hinch would have stuck with Greinke for one more batter as I thought he had earned the opportunity but I can certainly understand Hinch's decision to go with a fresh arm and someone who had proved himself all year long.  You get out of that inning and you probably have Cole for the 8th and 9th.  It just didn't work out though.

Let's just hope that Cole wants the best opportunity to win right now.  You have to think that Houston will offer him a fair deal that will not be any more than 5 years.  If he wants the best opportunity to win in his prime, he will stay.  If he wants the longest term deal he can possibly get, I would say he is going to a California team.  Only Cole knows what is most important to him.  Cole and Verlander seem to have a good thing going too.  They seem to really push each other to get better.

There are several contracts expiring this year with Harris, McHugh, Miley, Rondon, and Smith.  That is $27 million in salary right there. I would think that Houston could fill a few of those roles internally with the exception of Harris and Smith, who I would hope that they try to re-sign.  I think they could make the money work.  Maybe they try to deal Greinke or Reddick in the offseason to free up some payroll if they re-sign Cole?  Obviously they would probably have to eat some of Greinke's money if they deal him. I guess it all will boil down to if Cole really wants to stay.  He won't find a better situation as far as winning and doing so long term in the offseason.  I think the two big names that will hit free agency soon are Springer and Correa.  At this point, I think Springer is the priority over Correa.  Once Correa hits free agency you have Grenike off of the books if they don't deal him.  To me, I think they can make it work with Cole while not putting the team's future in jeapordy if he wants to stay.

If we are talking about wishing someone would have re-signed, I would say Charlie Morton is the one who is missed.  He is currently 11-2 with a 2.35 and 148K's.  I would say that Miley came along much cheaper than Keuchel and has done just as good of a job, if not better than Keuchel did last year.

« on: March 23, 2019, 03:21:38 pm »
This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.

JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.

I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.

But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.

So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.

Wrong.

Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.

You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.

But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.

Good Ole JR, kiss my internet loving As-tros. goodnight.

BudGirl, out of abundance of caution, I want to make it clear to you that I am not "going after you" like some people on the board seem to think. I think you are a bright spot here and appreciate your contribution to the community.

I agree with you. I think the conversation between JimR and myself is shit. But please consider this, who is the person on this board who can't get enough of this shit? Over the many years how many threads have this kind of sad, aggressive, hostile shit in them? What is the common denominator?

From my view, I think the answer is JimR. I think he can't get enough of this shit. Maybe you see it differently, I am wrong multiple times every fucking day.

JimR obviously likes you and might listen to you. JimR has a lot of friends here, but I think he needs at least one more to let him know when he is out of line.

In case it has been misunderstood, saying "hope your master finds work soon," refers to Brad Ausmus being between gigs in baseball. Since you refer to yourself as the Slave of Brad Ausmus, I intended that has a joke, not an insult. You and I both like Brad, albeit differently. If someone in your life who others here think of as "your master" is out of work--that is an unfortunate coincidence.

Genuinely wish you, and your devotion to Brad Ausmus all the best--yours is a love greater than any restraining order. So if I have offended you, I apologize. No offense was intended and though a bit wordy, I hope it removes any of the ambiguity in my prior post.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The World Series is over.  You can go back to being a Rangers fan now.  U FOO!

« on: July 07, 2016, 08:31:18 am »
I don't want to turn this into a 'In Luhnow We Trust' conversation.  Either you do or you don't.

I think there is a case to be made for doing nothing. But then, there is also a case to be made for doing something.

The team is built around a three man core: Altuve,  Correa, Springer. Preserving that core is critical to both immediate and long term success.
The team is getting key contributions from 3 guys who are all unrestricted free agents at end of the season: Rasmus, Valbuena and Gomez.
How replaceable are they through farm system without degrading roster talent? Very. And not at all.

First, it should be noted that Rasmus would likely be willing to sign a two-year extension to stay in Houston. He's streaky as hell and not particularly good against LH pitching, but he is also a 80/25/80 hitter who is plus glove and plus locker room. He's likely a 2 for $30 million deal.
Last year at this time I imagined him to be expendable because of Preston Tucker. But PTuck isn't half the outfielder Colby is, and despite a sweet swing, struggled with the bat early this season.  Other than Tucker Luke Aplin or possibly Teoscar Hernandez may be ready next Spring. But, Aplin is a poor man's Jake Mrasnick, and that's not exactly an upgrade over Rasmus, while Hernandez was almost written out of the prospect puzzle before this season wrote him back in.

Astros could venture into OF trade market for a Jay Bruce or more interestingly a Will Myers, maybe even oft injured but dynamic Yankee outfielder in Ellsbury or Gardner. For all of that, I would roll the dice with Colby and Tucker. We know that little Tucker is still two years or so away. But one of the Tucker boys eventually holds down the LF spot.

In the meantime, Colby could easily slide to CF at the end of this year when Gomez walks (no way can the Astros justify paying GoGo given his limited on field production). If Jake could hit even a little bit, he would be a CF for the next 5 years. But he can't, so a CF platoon of Colby and Jake seems reasonable for the foreseeable future.

I have even less interest in upgrading 3B outside of our system. Not sure if Moran makes it, but feel very confident that Bregman will. With Marwin around, we rely on him to balance the ups and downs of a younger player.

1B is its own challenge. AJ shows huge pop, but at the moment, MLB off speed stuff seems to be his undoing.  His strikeout ratio makes him hard to keep up while we are battling for a division title (Rangers pitching is going to catch up with them). Singleton is struggling to achieve AAAA goodness. That said, both Tyler White and Matt Duffy are still too young to write off (as is Jon, but I've written him off anyway). Again, I have some trade interest in Wil Myers. He can certainly play 1B this season if needed and then move to the outfield next year pushing either Rasmus or Springer into CF.

The C position seems to be drawing interest. We likely lose Castro in the offseason. Gattis is better than expected defensively, but he continues to struggle at the plate. There is nothing at the top of the farm system with a proven productive bat, not Stassi, not Pena. Would love to still have Nottingham to be able to plug in next season, but nope. Lucroy would be a HUGE upgrade over our current tandem. Norris would likely be a better Gattis. Can we win with Gattis/Castro? I think so. Would Lucroy make the lineup significantly more dangerous? Absolutely.  But at what cost?

I would love for the Astros to feature another big arm pitcher in the front five. Michael Feliz comes to mind. Chris Devenski hits 94 MPH on the gun as well. Down south we have a hard thrower in Musgrove on the cusp, with softer throwing Rogers seemingly more major league ready. At least another year away is Frances Marte.  That's five good young arms for at most two open spots in the Astro rotation next season. Of course, none of those guys have the proven track record of a HEALTHY Sonny Gray or a HEALTHY Tyson Ross. But neither of those guys are healthy and both of their teams want GoGo like returns in the form of prospects. The only guy I trade the farm system for is Chris Archer, and he is either hurting or in the midst of just a nightmarish year that is inexplicable.

The bullpen needs a lefty specialist to supplant Ineffective Tony Sipp.  James Hoyt comes to mind. That said, we have already mortgaged the future for one set up man in Ken Giles, doing it twice would be grounds for immediate dismissal.

Bottom line, three targets I like: Wil Myers, Jonathon Lucroy and Chris Archer. Each guy will warrant at minimum two top 10 Astro prospects -- very possibly our Most Valuable Prospect Mr. Bregman.

Personally, I would rather sit tight. It's going to be a very tough fight for the wildcard -- with Orioles, Royals, Blue Jays, Mariners, Indians, Tigers even the Rangers all battling. That said, other than the Indians, no team has been better in the AL for the last two months than our Astros.

In my mind three young guns may make the difference in our success this year: Reed, Hoyt and Bregman. I would rather lose with them than face the future without them. If we could get a Myers or a Lucroy without losing any of these three, might be worth doing. Otherwise, I say believe in the talent we have on hand.

U FOO!

I can't find an article of when Keuchel pitched against us.  But he did play a little first base.  He got plunked in this game.  Scardino was tougher to hit than Keuchel in my opinion.  He threw in the upper 80's.  Not sure what ever happened to him.

No, you don't remember it that way at all.  You remember distinctly that he was hell at home but that any road wins against your high school team or against the Dickities were flukes.

Maybe you are right.  He was a little wild...I distinctively remember wearing a mid to upper 80's fastball.

Everyone knows Keuchel has never won a single road game in his life, even dating back to his Tee-ball days. So the fact that he is pitching some of these games is of absolutely no consolation to me. He'll probably get beat around so bad that he won't even be mentioned as a Cy Young candidate anymore.

Nonsense.  I got to face Mr. Keuchel in high school.  He had no problem with our team on the road.

Plus, knowing Correa, I highly doubt his miss of home plate was a "boneheaded" play; more likely he was just trying hard to avoid the tag and had a catcher's foot or something prevent him from touching it on the way in.

This was the case.  I was at this game.  The play at the plate was going to be very close and he tried to slide around the catcher.  I question if he actually missed home plate.  He swung the bat quite well in the game.  No doubt he will be on this team soon.

Talk Zone / Re: No offense Bud Girl but...
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:29:41 am »
30 homeruns from a catcher is not more valuable to a team than 30 homeruns from another position! The only thing more valuable is the price tag! I don't know about you, but I would like to have a left fielder that can hit for a little power and some pitching! We already have a catcher.

56
Talk Zone / Re: No offense Bud Girl but...
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:23:35 am »
Why is 30 homeruns better from a catcher than it is from a first baseman or left fielder? The last time I checked, 30 homeruns from a catcher is equal to the 30 homeruns that a first baseman or left fielder hits. If not many catchers hit 30 homeruns, they are going to be a bit expensive, right? Why dont we use that money to get a left fielder and maybe another pitcher and let Brad handle the pitching staff?

57
Talk Zone / Re: No offense Bud Girl but...
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:12:16 am »
Not to mention, probably a bit cheaper as well.

58
Talk Zone / Re: No offense Bud Girl but...
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:06:08 am »
I thought that we were going to go after an outfielder who can hit 30 homeruns? Why are we picking on Brad Ausmus all of a sudden? Offense is offense. A good defensive catcher is something that not all teams have. Lets leave Brad alone and get a left fielder.

59
Talk Zone / Re: No offense Bud Girl but...
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:57:03 pm »
You are wrong. Catching is just a bit more than "framing the damn ball". Catching is calling the game, blocking a slider in the dirt with runners on, throwing base stealers out. A good defensive catcher is a rare commodity. A good defensive catcher makes his whole team better by being able to call a good game and give the pitchers the confidence to throw a curve, slider, splitter, etc, knowing that his catcher will not let the ball get by to allow the runner to advance. I would take Brad's defense over a catcher who can hit anyday. Unless, there is a catcher out there who can hit for power and call a good game.

One more question. Has Lamb ever hit 30 homers and drove in 100 runs? Lamb is not an everyday player, Huff is and is a proven major league hitter. We will not sign Huff to be Mike Lamb. He will be an everyday player. Lamb will not.

Why don't we go to Drayton and tell him that you would make a much better manager than Phil. You have it all figured out. Hell, we could even make you the GM too.

I wouldn't mind seeing Huff play 1st and Berkman in right when he's 100%. Lamb would be nice to give Morgan and Berkman a rest (Huff moves to right), and have a power bat off the bench. But, it will be interesting this offseason, as Huff seems to want to play 3rd base. I would like to see us keep him.

U FOO! What the heck are you trying to start? Pierre is probably the fastest person in baseball. I think our pitchers need to learn to keep the runners closer. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm glad Ausmus is on our team.
