If the Astros make the playoffs this year, they should do very well if playoff experience means anything. Of the 26 players that will most likely form the pool from which the playoff roster will be composed, 24 have played in multiple playoff series and 11 have played in a World Series. Only two, Alvarez and Diaz, have no playoff experience.

Hank Bauer, the tough, no-nonsense former Yankee outfielder, died last week. Bauer spent almost 3 years in the South Pacific during WWII as a USMC platoon leader. He was wounded twice and suffered from malaria. Bauer was a key contributor to the great Yankee teams of the 50's. He hit in 17 straight World Series games, a record that most certainly will never be broken. He was part of the trade that brought Roger Maris to the Yankees. He managed the Orioles to a World Series championship in 1966.

Great team. Great fans. Outstanding performances top to bottom - Drayton, Purpura, Garner, coaches, front line players and bench. They achieved success far beyond what the talent level indicated. While there can't be a sense of fulfillment for the team, there should be a strong feeling of pride in what was accomplished. The WS loss in no way diminishes what (for me ) was the most enjoyable season. Hats off to the Astros for a job well done. Next year can't come soon enough.
