Brent who?

And saying "extremely" is a bit much.  We're just plain ol' hateful and horrible... just like everybody else.

Props to you for being forthright and honest with your opinions.  I would've tried to be diplomatic with AD, but the reality is that the charter of each fansite is different.  Your information was 100% correct, OWA is an extention of what was started at the BFT (Astrosconnection.com) many years ago.  Original content by excellent writers, minor league perspectives rarely found anywhere else and then a gang of TZ freaks who rarely whine about the organization, but tackles the baseball related performance of the team for a better understanding of the game (*from every perspective*).

Other fansites are good for what they do well, from being a  web portal to a full fledge fan-fest whinery.  More power to all, they serve a purpose as we do.  The real answer is,  IMHO, we're all so different, it is not which is better, but which suits the fan who is looking for an online home to read and participate.

To each it's own and the early motto of BFT to "live and let live" has served us very well since day one.

Yeah, I must echo everyone else and say how glad I am that I found this website and how much I do appreciate the quality work that is done here. While I mostly follow the "Read more, post less" mantra, I do wish I could contribute more. Truth is, most of you guys leave me with little to say. After two or so seasons of reading this site my knowledge of the game has sharpened and my prospective has grown and I?m STILL learning from (some of)you guys. Great work everyone, looking forward to this season.

I'm fighting my gag reflex as I type this but, damnit, I'm starting to respect JdeJO....

Jose, you and justice are constantly being ridiculed on the OWA messageboards for what you say about the astros. I just thought youd like to know that.

His response
"(Richard and I are big boys. We can handle it. Richard has paid his dues and worked at some of the best newspapers of America. I've covered baseball for a decade and spent some time covering ball in New York. We know we will be ripped from time to time. If you're going to be paid to cover professional athletes, you have to be willing to understand that you're open to criticism too. You just cannot think you can give your opinion on people without having people share their opinion about you. I read many of the Astros fan sites and like parts of all of them. I'm a passionate person, and I love that folks are passionate about the team that I cover. I thank everybody for reading what we report and for caring enough to get upset or pleased at times. The key for me is to have my bosses, the fans and the Astros at least realize that I work my butt off to deliver Astros news. I don't pull many punches, but I also have empathy for the subjects I cover and their fans.

And in the immortal words of Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman", "Alex, Brendan.. Fuck you too."

I thought his road trip with Chris Sampson was a gimmick to attract attention to himself.  Not much real reporting there.  Sampson throws harder than a reporter would like and eats at crap diners.  Had not Tim Purpura provided a good answer to the why not Redman question, I would have thought the stunt a total waste.  Somehow though, he has begun to become a different reporter.  However, I anticipate soon a story where unnamed sources are disgruntled about something Garner does and it threatens to destroy the team.  In a very special 2 part episode.

Justice is completely indefensible.  Oh, also Alex, we rip McTaggert too, when appropriate.  Now, if Alyson Footer ever slips up....

I saw in Footer's latest mailbag that she calls Pinwheel a good friend. Their friendship certainly hasn't elevated his reporting ability.

And speaking of Footer... judging by the emails she actually answers, I wonder what the eye-roll factor is like as she digs through her inbox each week. She does a good job of maintaining her patience with asinine inquiries.

I guess nobody bothers with telling the *whole* truth and nothing *but the truth* anymore (why should they, it doesn't fit the agenda).

JDJO and Pinwheel also get some props in here as well.  I had two straight weeks of admiration for what JDJO wrote and said so in this forum, he was dead spot on.  Crickets will be chirping before anyone goes running to the chron to tell on the big bad ugly mean ol' OWA on that sort of thing though.

Why anybody cares beyond what is said in here for some entertainment and some educational value is beyond me any way.  And JDJO is right, his opinion isn't sacrosant (sp?) that it cannot be countered and he knows it goes with the territory.  Just like it goes with the territory in here.

Gawd, I hate whiners.

Nope, only posted once at JDJO's blog... that was to enter my 1998 "Field of Dreams" piece in the Oswalt contest.  Me figures I came in middle to back of the pack on the tell of the tape due to much obscurity (and misspelled words... grammar counts for something and that will always be my achilies heel).

I've never participated in the great unwashed debates... methinks it would just get too frustrating to participate in that format for me, what with no ability to free-for-all and such.  Sometimes, you just have to "fight like hell" (as BFT pointed out).

Maybe it was pravata? Although he goes by Richard most of the time.  I know Michael Nash post there from time to time, maybe it was him.

After reading JdJO's comments, I can honestly say I don't doubt he works hard at what he does (Polly I am not as sure about), but my issue with JdJO has more to do with his methods and his motives behind what he writes, than the actually work he puts in.

There are very few writers I will always sing the praises of.  I think it is just a matter that we compare most people who cover the Astros with Footer, and she is just better than all of them.

Twasn't I.  I did send a post telling Alex that he missed a couple dozen other reporters, commentators, small amphibious creatures, iconic "chili" recipes, late model autos, mass produced beer, etc. etc. etc. that we "constantly rip" in the OWA. JdeJO hasnt released it yet.

Wait, scratch the used car salesmen, they're off the list last I remember.  We did officially replace them with baseball beat writers at the last pope meeting.

I will have a hard time ever respecting JDJO after his year smear campaign in print and on the radio against Craig Biggio 2 years ago, and the bullshit way that he interjected himself into the Roy O saga last year.

I'm not saying he doesn't know his baseball, I'm saying he's a smarmy little insecure prick more interested in self-agrandizing then putting out a fair, balanced and accurate report of the Astros and their interworkings.

Maybe he's improved some lately, but I can't read anything he has to say without wondering what his agenda is, and how he thinks he personally benefits from his tripe.  Count me a non-fan to this day.

Yes I can, predictions are for idiots. (ETA) Also, his idea of pitting AstrosDaily vs Orangewhoopass in a "friendly" competition, somebody needs to gently and privately explain to him why that is a very bad idea.

We already have the annual Race For The Lid(tm) contest, so it would be counter-productive to compete with any other site with predictions when we already do it on our own.

But hey, we've done plenty of stupid things before... and live to tell about it, so what the heck!  (see: Softball, OWA Annual)

The danger of posting a challenge to this forum of freaks is someone will find a way to get injured no matter what.  It's a given.  The proverbial "Hey guys, look what I can do..." darwin awards winners come to mind whenever someone throws down the gauntlet for this site to participate in a contest.

Even if the idea is to just type some numbers on a keyboard, I fear the outcome for some.  The adrenal rush that comes with the territory of competition is just too scary with freaks.

I seem to recall a short-lived suggestion to have an OWA vs. AD softball game, but they weren't interested.  I believe their mantra is "Don't fuck with the OWAldies".

I think they turned OWA down when the suggestion was made that it be full contact, full pads, no boudaries softball.  It was both scary and confusing all at the same time.

Like I said, I fear the broken limb possibilities whenever the gauntlet is dropped on this forum.  Not pretty.

Why do you automatically think of the Englishman when it comes to cheating?

Statment from Limey's agent:
Limey apologises for the lack of an appropriate YouTube clip (of flopping soccer players).  Limey's employer has made the extremely sane move of putting YouTube in the verboten zone.  However, if Limey's employer thinks that this will mean that he will do any actual work (missing "Office Space" clip), they're soooorely mistaken (missing "Ferris Bueller" clip).

And quibble is when you poke it with a fork to make holes.  But, all this has been worthwhile.  This gem was posted in JdeJO's blog,

My name is RyanED and I post on Speedy's board. I have retired from posting to focus on Diablo II and my girlfriend (who I met at Denny's). This will be my last post on The Houston Chronicle blog. My goal was to be a Houston Chronicle writer, but I don't know if I will ever do that. People at Speedy's board and OWA and clutchfans.net (where someone used my name to make me look stoopid) and jbarron's Houston Astros forum have been mean to me so I don't now if I should of quit a long time ago.

Wow, just wow.

Just think: Ryan's vote counts just as much as yours or mine on matters of actual significance.  With any luck, he'll be too stoopid [sic] to locate the polling place.

And then there's the cheery prospect of him possibly pulling himself away from Diablo II long enough that he and his Denny's girlfriend manage to propagate their gene set, helping to accelerate the arrival of Idiocracy.

I think this was a hoax by those who dislike this particular poster.  I am not entirely sure about this (he may of used a different name), but he wasn't a poster here under that name, but someone else registered as RyanED (an  AD regular poster) in order to parody him and make malacious remarks.  We figured out it was a hoax right away and banned the use of the name.  It is not cool to take a name of a poster and use it somewhere else to make fun of them, or to afix blame on them for malacious acts.

That is one of the things we had to seriously fight when the Clarkfestation of aught 6 happened.  A burgeoning fansite for the Astros cropped up, stole identities from this site, even avatars, and then proceeded to steal copyright material, such as our Series Previews.  They also stole the names of our original content, like "From the Dugout" and "Pine Tar Rag".

Not cool.  The type of stuff a lawyer loves to sink his/her teeth into.  Whoever is using the name RyanED to fake post for him is in a legal bind right now and may not know it.  It isn't a small thing either.  It could lead to some really huge legal problems if they trace the person down and follow up with some legal action.

I'm serious about this, whoever did it better stop this practice here and anywhere else.

We contacted them and requested that they stop using our material.  They refused.  We contacted their ISP and informed them that one of their users was stealing copyrighted material from us.  The ISP suspended their site until they removed some, but not all, of the material.  We again notified the ISP that they still had some of our stuff there, and again the site was suspended.

The site has since shut down and apparently become a different site, which is now apparently stealing material from MLB.com instead of us.  They're nothing if not persistent.

Worse, we sent Hudson Hawk after their arses.  The guy can argue like a mofo too!  Glad he's on OWA's side because of it.

Cease or I'll tell you parent what you're up to was the order of the day... plus some legal action that was going to be filed.  BTW - they also asked for contributions (give us money or else we can't stay afloat) from folks who visited them.  With our copyright material which anyone can read for free.

Which is probably news to the handful who still consider themselves AD regular posters.  Ray gave up the idea of a forum for AD a very long time ago, and since he's given up AD to others, it hasn't had the urge to go back to what it once was under Kerby.

If true, that is too funny.

1.  His "design" is nothing more than using Photoshop to paste in photos and draw rectangles with text in them.  Then he just dumped it all straight into a web page.  He didn't even bother to take out the "ImageReady slices" from his code.  Hopefully his prof is going to look at the code to see that he didn't really do this himself.

2.  His forum is powered by vBulletin, commercial BBS software that costs $160.  Since spending $160 just for a class project is bizarre (especially when free options are available), I'm guessing he stole that too.  Either way, it's still hilarious.

Actually, AstrosDaily doesn't have a fan forum. It links to Speedy's board at The Link

I'd challenge Hulsey or Barzilla to any kind of Baseball related challenge they could come up with, but I doubt they would respond. I've questioned both about their *ideas* on other boards, but never received a response. Maybe I'm just not worthy to be in that rarified atmosphere.

No?, just how many times did that tarot card reader slap you?
I got a big chuckle out of that.

It cost me money too... cash, American!

I'm surprised somebody didn't follow up with a post like this:

"Yeah, well, I'll see your tarot card reader and raise you one Santeria Bruja (witch doctor).  My inside source told me, and by inside source I mean the old doc read the entrails of a goat..."  (insert the bold predictions here)

May as well have fun with it!

I think this was a hoax by those who dislike this particular poster.

Yeah.  The "But I digest" is the giveaway.  No one is that stoopid, not even "a regular on the AD board."

Interesting class assignment: Go 'redesign' someone else's shit without their permission.

Why actually do your homework when you can just steal it?

Also, this is most likely a computer nerd we're talking about, so he didn't have the option of bullying a nerd to do it for him.

If we're not posting anything about the site, could someone please PM me all of the info? I'm an interactive design director here in Austin, and on the off chance that I ever get handed his resume, I want to know who I'm about to professionally bludgeon.

They still try, though.  I help out in the Adobe web development newsgroups fairly regularly, and it's not unusual for posters to pop in and DEMAND a solution, and by "solution", I mean cut-and-paste snippets along with precise instructions on what you mean by "paste."  We've had a couple of these "school projects" infest the newsgroup, too.  It usually ends up being some variation of "here's the link; fix it for me."

What's worse is that some people will do their work for them anyway...

Irony is so ironic.  He stole your particular avatar and took someone else name from this forum.  You should be very proud, he loved your work on the avatar so much... he took it!

Mihoba told me last year someone had "borrowed" it, but I didn't realize until now that it was the guy running the thing, or that it still existed at a new domain.

Normally, I could care less - it's a couple of minutes in photoshop, and I've got better things to worry about. But the fact that there's some douchebag out there doing some ridiculous vanity "mailbag" using a likeness that I've rather lazily associated with myself, well that just pisses me right off. I hope no one has ever been confused by this...

I doubt it and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.  In your case, the quality of your takes is reflected well by the avatar you use.

In his case, it is preplexing indeed when you read the pablum he puts out.  But the larger issue is how this kid steals reqularily to make himself try to look good for others.  He either knows his audience well or underestimates how much they laugh behind his back at his feeble attempts to impress.

Or both.

"Even Pravata up at OWA can't complain with this prediction: Astros will go 92-70 and clinch the division with four games to go."

Yes I can, predictions are for idiots. (ETA) Also, his idea of pitting AstrosDaily vs Orangewhoopass in a "friendly" competition, somebody needs to gently and privately explain to him why that is a very bad idea.

I predict that the site whose members say "fuck" most will win. With my entry, we'll already be ahead.

Send that to Jose de Jesus Ortiz.  He's mixing in areas he ought not mix.

Done. I also provided a bonus prediction for the Stem, so I got to say "fuck" twice.

Classic!  CTB drops the f-bombs on the blog and Ortiz has to fish his comments out of the spam filter and edit them so the post can be seen to the masses!  Walk with pride man, walk with pride.
News that is sufficiently bad somehow carries its own guarantee of truth.  Only good reports need confirmation.

I think you're being way too specific.  This whole place is a Police Academy movie.  Probably #15.
