Lidge on 790
« on: May 12, 2006, 06:28:25 pm »
Summary of Lidge's comments to Palilo:

1.  Gar told him he would prefer to have a non-save situation to get him back out there, but will still put him in the 9th in a save situation.

2.  Didn't want to get into specifics, but hinted that he and Hickey might have spotted a little bit of pitch-tipping on the video.

3.  Hasn't been aggressive enough with the fastball in the zone.

4.  Hitters have adjusted to him, and he needs to adjust back.

he is not throwing his slider for strikes. when he does, he's effective. because he cannot, they are sitting on his FB and hitting it. he has lost command of everything, and he is scared. so, the excuses are logical and describe correctable flaws.

when he was on, the PA guy could have said "SLIDER COMING," and it would not matter. he cannot throw consistent strikes to good spots, and he is seeing the ghost of Steve Blass.

i still think a lot of it is front-side related, but what do i know?

To my untrained eye, it looks like he's become too dependent on putting the slider in the dirt at 2 strikes.  Most hitters have caught on to it, and as you said, are sitting FB.

What does that mean?

I've been thinking a lot about Steve Blass.

opening up his left shoulder too soon, which makes him fall off the mound to his left and results in his arm being quite a bit behind his body as he throws.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

The year he lost it on the mound, he hit over .400

The real problem is Gar hasn't been pinch-hitting Lidge enough.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

It could just be variability on pitching guns, but of all the games I've watched this year, I've only seen him hit upper 90's once, and that was only for a few pitches.  His fastball as been 92-93 all year and his slider is around 84.  Thats pretty off from what he was throwing last year.

Quite a lot, if you believe that Garner fella.

From Yahoo
The Link

"He's flying open," Garner said. "What that means is when your front shoulder goes out too soon, your ball tends to flatten out. Fastballs don't have the same finish on them and more importantly your slider doesn't have the same break on it that it normally does. So that's been his major issue."

Thanks for the continued insight Jim.  That's why I come here.

I don't know the full Steve Blass story and have only heard him mentioned as some sort of shorthand for psychic damaged ruined career (IOW, Pujols got in his head).  Is this right?  What happened?

In 1973 Blass couldn't find home plate after winning 2 world series games in 72.  He was tested and analyzed and nothing could be found, he was never effective again.  Of note: he gave a eulogy for Clemente between the 72-73 season.

Shouldn't that be the '71 WS? Blass had a stellar '72 season. Sad story. Ankiel also had a "Blass from the past."
