"A League of Their Own"--DVR on AMC
« on: November 21, 2005, 12:21:02 pm »
Saw the DVR version last evening with subtitles commenting on various aspects of the production of the movie.  A few things of interest:
Jimmy Dugan was patterned after Jimmy Foxx.  Unlike Dugan, former female players recall Foxx as a "perfect gentleman."

The Geena Davis lead role was originally cast with Demi Moore.  Later, when Penny Marshall became director, the role went to Debra Winger.  Winger bailed after Marshall cast Madonna, indicating she did not care much for "stunt casting" (Winger had apparently trained intensively for two months).

Most of the filming, including the final game of the World Series, was done in Evansville, Indiana.  The crowd scenes from the seventh game included all locals wearing period (1944) clothing were shot on Labor Day, with temps around 110.

The actress who played Davis' little sister, was actually a pretty good athlete and on her home run to win the seventh game, you can see her hit the inside of the bases perfectly as she came around.

Tom Hanks is a weenie.  He refused to chew tobacco, instead opting for a mixture of tootsie rolls and raisins.

I've always thought Lovitz is a very underrated comedian.  His comedic timing is superb.  My favorite Lovitz line in that movie (oaraphrased):

Lovitz:  We'll pay you X dollars per month.

Li'l Sis to Geena Davis:  Wow, we only make Y dollars at the dairy...

Lovitz:  Well, this would be *more* then.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Critic was ahead of its time.  Absolutely hilarious show.
Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be?

There was a fair amount of commentary on Lovitz' role in the film, as the part was written expressly for him, something the screenwriters of this movie had never done.  He ad libbed quite a bit and the other actors had quite a problem in not cracking up.

His physical reaction to seeing Martha's fgace up close is hilarious.

Not only that, but like a great point guard, he makes those around him better/funnier.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit
