Most of the site traffic goes through the TZ so I posted a note there.  I assumed, wrongly obviously, that those who frequented this forum also were familiar with the MO forum.

Greeneville Roster
« Reply #7 on: June 18, 2005, 10:37:37 am »
The Greeneville Sun had a early tease at the roster today.  There are 4 players returning most notable is Ryan Reed, OF, David Kady, C and Brad James, P.  This number is way down from the 10 who returned last year.  But we also had very few HS kids drafted last year who signed.

There are going to be 10 players from the draft on the team.  The only one mentioned specifically was the Catcher from the 3rd round out of South Florida.

The rest of the team will be guys from the Dominican and Venesuala.

I would link to the report but their site is a day behind.

You'd expect all the high school signees to be at Greeneville.  There'll be some JUCO signees there as well.

There were a number of VSL and DSL players at extended spring training so there's no surprise that the rosters at both Greeneville and Tri-City would have a number of those players.

I'm very happy to see that Pluta's back in action.  I met him (well, brief hello, nice to meet you type thing) a couple years ago in ST, before his surgery.  He was extremely polite....nice kid.  I'm rooting for him.

In his last 30 IP, Taylor Buchholz has only allow 7 runs, and 4 of them came in one 6IP outing.  This is all his innings since comming off the DL... Maybe he is figuring it all out.

The roster is finally out (a good thing since they play their first game tonight).

The Link

The team will have 5 of the first 10 round draft picks.  3 of those being in the outfield.

For those of you sweltering in the Texas heat, game time temp in Bristol tonight should be in the mid 70's with 55% humidity.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought Greenville started Thursday and Tri-City started tonight?  Am I wrong?

either way... I will watch both closely to see what kind of players we got in this year's draft...  Flores I would imagine is the lead-off guy.  I am anxious to see what kind of Catcher Ralph is... I have high hopes given his is a Switch hitter to boot!

An interesting group.  A number of intriguing arms.  Henriquez has gotten the press at catcher, but Andres Reiner is high on Jose Lopez, a defensive catcher.  The infield is one giant question mark.  There's no telling how the new kids from the Dominican and Venezuela are going to do, much less Johnson.  In the outfield, Barnes, Flores and Rodriguez can all run.  There's some real power potential there too.

Both kick off tonight.

I'd need to know who is starting tonight to know who'll lead off.  There are a few guys who could do that, both in the infield and the outfield.

Sometimes the numbers just don't add up.

The Lexington Legends fielded a team last night that included five batters with averages less than .190.

West Virginia had one such batter in the lineup.

But it was the Legends who literally bombarded the Applebee's Park scoreboard with 15 hits en route to a 12-5 victory.

Kevin Vital, who came into the game hitting .171, delivered the big blow with the Legends' sixth grand slam of the season, a shot off the scoreboard in right-center that highlighted a six-run seventh inning.

"Just trying to be aggressive," Vital said. "Lately that's been the issue I've been having at the plate. So I'm trying to turn it around, flip the switch and stay aggressive 100 percent of the time, and stop thinking too much."

Beau Torbert (.107) followed with a solo shot.

J.R. Towles (.000 -- 0-for-3 in his debut game) had four hits, including a leadoff homer in the eighth. One out later, Vital blasted his fifth homer of the season over the right-field deck, giving him a three-hit night.

Lexington leads the league with 85 homers.

Edgar Babilonia (.181) had an RBI single and Clint McGill (.188) singled, doubled and scored twice.

Well, they did get alot of hits and base runners, but lost cause they had 15 LOBsters.

If they continue to hit anywhere close, I expect a ton of offense from that team.

They had 12 k's and 6 were from 2 players (Graham 1B and Gonzalez 3B)  Early in the game they were overpowered by the Bristol started who had 7k's.  I don't see this being a homer team but a doubles team.  Pitching should be ahead of hitting the first few weeks.  60 + more games of development to go.

Heard from a source today that, pre-Nieve's callup, Purpura thought the future of the Astros pitching was in Corpus.  Likely referring to Nieve, Hirsh, and McLemore.

Oh, and by the way guys, no one here seems to notice what with all the Patton and Nieve love, but Mark McLemore is putting together a hell of a season at Corpus.  A sub-3 ERA and holding the hitting friendly Texas League to a .227 batting average against is pretty damned good.  Coming into this season conventional wisdom was that McLemore would be a middle reliever for the Astros.  Right now he's looking like he could have enough to crack the starting rotation in the future.  I don't know if all this will hold up but it pretty impressive stuff.

Douglass is a pansy.  He can't be a real man because he doesn't rack up enough strikeouts.  All kidding aside, how is his velocity this year?

While I know you were kidding, I would point to Jamie Moyer as a pitcher who doesn't K alot of people but is amazingly affective.

Pence Injury update
« Reply #41 on: June 26, 2005, 08:53:34 pm »
This was in the Lexington Paper Saturday:
But Pence, who suffered a strained quadriceps June 12, is on the disabled list and will not play. The league leader in homers (23) learned yesterday that he also will be scratched from the pre-game Home Run Derby.

"It's a nice honor for him to go and it's a shame that he's injured," Bogar said. "But what's more important here, a home run-hitting contest or the second half of the season?"

Pence says he will make the trip, though. He is looking forward to "just getting to meet everybody and being a part of it. It's a great honor to be there and I'm just happy to have a chance to go."

Pence could be back in the lineup soon after the all-star break.

Sutil update from BA

? An early breakout player in the New York-Penn League is Astros shortstop Wladimir Sutil. The 20-year-old Venezuelan, who led the Appy League in steals last year while wowing scouts with his defensive skills, has gone 10-for-21 (.476) in his first six games for short-season Tri-City, and has yet to strike out.

Yep.  I really thought Sutil would start the season at Lexington (with Zobrist starting at Salem and Robinson starting at Corpus).  With first Robinson and now Zobrist getting the bump, and with Sutil getting off to a good start, I expect that is what will happen now.

A Sutil promotion would say a couple of things, IMO.  1) Sutil is on the fast-track, and 2) Maysonet is no longer on the radar.

I'm not sure it isn't just a coincidence that Zobrist's promotion coincides with Maysonet being on the DL.  If Sutil doesn't join Lex, I wouldn't be surprised to see Zobrist sent back down when Maysonet comes off the DL.  Of course if Zobrist tears up the Carolina League, then who knows.

Does anyone have some scoop on how Maysonet was doing??  His offensive stats were not too good, but stats always tell less than the whole story ... and with middle infielders that goes double.

In this case, the stats probably tell enough of the story.  I haven't heard any complaints about his defense.  And, his speed is still there.  But, his bat has gone south from last year, and he hasn't shown signs of significant improvement.  If he's got an injury that's been affecting his swing all year, the Astros aren't saying.  I can try to find out though.

Isn't all of this movement also making room for Manzella, the Tulane SS.  He could go to Tri-city or Lex.

Was Maysonet playing 2nd or SS? The Roster has him listed as a 2nd baseman so would Ash be sent back down or Zobrist? or whoever is doing best of those two gets to stay?

He was the regular SS ... you can check out the game logs on BA (under 'stats') if you want this kind of detail.

We should find out next week when Manzella reports to Tri-City.

Anyone heard when Iorg is going to report to Tri-City? I saw it mentioned that he was going to rest a couple of weeks but the article did not say exactly how long.

Right, but he's not playing 2nd.  Look at the boxscores from the 18th (when he got hurt) back and you'll see he's been exclusively at short.

"Lexington outfielder Hunter Pence, on the disabled list since June 12 with a strained quadriceps, has developed an infection in his knee and won't return until the end of the week, at the earliest. Since he was leading the minors in homers when he went down, it isn't hard to imagine that he might not be far behind in promotion."

Barnes (Greenville), our 5th or 6th round draft pick this year was caught stealing twice....and also picked off twice.  Not sure I've ever seen that before...even in the minors.

Sutile continueing to play well.  Went 0-2, but drew three walks, stole a base and scored a pair of runs.

So far Greeneville pitchers have surrendered 51 runs.  However, only 31 have been earned.  Errors are killing us!

I was at the game the other night and saw this series of events:

Batter 1 : Pitchers misses 1st base on force
Pitcher throws away pick off
Batter 2: Pitcher leaves grounder on ground.

3 E1's in 2 batters.

And this was with the game tied! Rookie ball at its most exciting!

It was Joshua Flores that got picked off and caught 4 times last night. Still not good.

Actually it was only 2 times.  Minor league baseball records caught stealings and pick offs separately even though they are part of the same play.  Flores got picked off first twice but was actually put out on those pick offs at second base.  So, for MiLB pick offs are not necessarily outs, but caught stealings are.

I would be surprised if he started tonight.   He started last Saturday and threw 1 inning Tuesday at the SAL all star game.
They are closely monitoring his Innings Pitched.  They had him skip a start in late May and may use this as another place to skip a start.  Skipping a start now might also allow him to get a good look at what this level of batter looks like.

No problem.  Just don't ever fucking do it again.

Actually it was at the bottom of the article about last night's RR game.  I was looking to see why Buchholz only went 1 inning.  Apparently he had arm stiffness in warmups and that carried over to the game.  I hope he's not significantly injured.  He's been really coming on.
