In case anyone is interested, here are a couple of sites with draft information (besides MLB).

BA's ranking of some of the top players

Brewerfan draft coverage - Lots of good info on players here.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Also, if you open the MLB.tv window, there is a link to Draftcaster '05. I couldn't find it anywhere else on the MLB site in the quick search I did. It opens up a macromedia flash window like the gamecast and looks to update everything live.

There's a link to it from the Draft Central main page.

OK. Thanks. Odd, but I had a different version of the draft central page open (the one linked from the Astros website as opposed to the one that opens from the MLB website) and I get different options. The Astros version only has draft tracker, not draftcaster.

I'll be quiet now.

Wow... Mayberry is quite a reach for the Rangers at 19.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I hope the Astros don't go for Hansen a closer from St. John's.  I'm not big on college closers.

And the Astros select at #24:

Brian Bogusevic, lhp, Tulane

Look through the posts here already.  That'll give you a good idea.  In short, he can hit; he can throw.  The Astros want him to throw.  When he signs, he will immediately become the Astros best or second best lefty in the minor league system.

This, unfortunately, reflects more on their farm system than on Bogusevic.

You cut right to the heart.  The Astros have a couple of lefties that don't throw hard, Muecke, McLemore, and Wandy who have real shots at being big leaguers (obviously Wandy is getting his shot now).  But they probably don't have the potential Bogusevic and Patton have.  Oh, and Bog and Patton are not real similar, other than being lefthanded, pitchers.

from baseball america

24. Astros: Brian Bogusevic, lhp, Tulane U.

Though more teams prefer him as a three-pitch lefthander, he also has five-tool potential as a right fielder. On the mound, Bogusevic shows an 89-93 mph fastball along with a solid slider and changeup. He has good command, though his velocity and location slipped when he strained a hamstring early in the season. Bogusevic's size, swing and bat speed give him tremendous power potential from the left side of the plate. That power is still more raw and not as evident in games?but it's there. He's also Tulane's fastest player, running the 60-yard-dash in 6.6 seconds during the team's scout day last fall. His arm obviously is an asset on defense as well.

edit: MLB.tv speculating that Houston passed on Teagarden because of one Scott Boras.

Henriquez was called the "top pro prospect" on the Florida State Champion (?) Key West club.

There are 50 rounds, so that might be too many picks to list.

Baseball America rated him the No. 94 prospect in the nation and the right-hander has struck out 31 batters in 20 innings to prove it.

You can bet he fell to the bottom half of the third round because of his commitment to Tennessee or he wants a ton of money.

Yes, this seems eerily similar to Drew Stubbs.

Bogusevic/Manzella
« Reply #88 on: June 07, 2005, 05:22:08 pm »
I posted this in the AstrosDaily forum and thought I'd share it here-

I'm an editor for the Tulane Sports page, and I've been covering Green Wave baseball all year, so I know Bogusevic (and the other Tulane guys - Owings/Manzella) pretty well.

Bogusevic

He's definitely the best player on the best team in the country. He's actually a really good hitter - I thought going into the year he'd project as a lefty hitter in the Majors because of the way he spreads the balls to all fields so well. He's also one of the faster guiys on the squad and overall a really good athlete - very Backe-esque.

As for pitching- he's got great offspeed stuff and mixes his pitches like a seasoned MLB veteran. He's definitely going to rise quickly through the system, and is a pretty "safe" pick and an easy guy to sign - which is probably why we picked him.

I'd say the only weakness is the fact that he isn't one of those over-powering, Brad Lidge/Billy Wagner/Derrick Grigsby guys we've always drafted in round one in the past - probably a sign if Purpura and the new regime wanting to change things up. So I don't really see a successful move to the bullpen if he doesn't pan out as a starter. But make no mistake - he can rack up the K's against pretty solid competition.

I'd compare him to Kenny Rogers because of his pitching style and the way he can flat out dominate without throwing in the mid-90's to high 90's. as for his personality - he's a great guy, really intelligent on and off the field, and has a great sense of humor. He's one of the more mature guys on the team and is very media- and fan-friendly. If nothing else, he'll be a great guy to market if he makes the Big Club

If any of ya'll have questions, i'd be more than happy to answer

Tommy Manzella

is also a pretty good ball player - he's one of the more veteran players on the Green Wave, and he's the guy on the media guide cover, etc., and one of the team leaders for the Green Wave. Like Bogi, he's a great clubhouse guy and a really intelligent person. I don't know him as well as BB, but from my experience he's also a great character guy, and someone who probably impressed the Astros in interviews.

He's a very slick fielder and has a solid throwing arm. He's got pretty good range, and although he won't blow you away with his athleticism, he'll make the play. He's got solid technique and doesn't make a lot of errors.

His offense is pretty solid too. He doesn't really have great power and he's only an average runner, but he can hit for a very good average. He hit .350 against very good competition, and he projects as a great contact/#2 hitter. A good comparison offensively is David Eckstein, and defensively Chris Burke.

I think Tommy has a good chance of making the majors, but we'll see how he adjusts to the wooden bat, but he doesn't really have a ceiling or anything. I'm surprised we drafted him so high - I think he's a good utility guy/role player, but scanning through the draft board, there are definitely some more talented college players still available.

Once again - if you've got any questions...

Ya know, I wouldn't be surprised if the Astros moved him to second base at some point.  Just a hunch.

Well, a lot of it was about the CWS but here goes nothing.

He sounds like a good kid.  Said that signability isn't an issue at all.  Grew up in Chicago.  He's a White Sox fan.  Understands that he was drafted as a pitcher and isn't looking forward to giving up hitting but is willing to do whatever the org asks.  Loves to play baseball.  Looking forward to seeing where he ends up.  Looking forward to facing Rice.  Said that Tommy Manzella is a great SS and he can't wait for the two of them to come up in the organization together.  Interviewed really well.

They had Troy Patten on earlier as well.  He's extremely pleased with how his season is going and is happy he signed with the organization.

Lord interviewed Troy Patton earlier.  A sample:

Maybe the Bogi (nice prefab Milo approved nickname, how convenient) interview was better, doubtful though.

I tune out Rich Lord normally but he did ask this of Bogi:  "considering the team's losing ways this year, how soon until you can help?"

Innuresting...  Sean O'Sullivan and Sergio Pedroza were two of the names still available that quickly stuck out in my mind.  I realize the Astros have emphasized college seniors in their drafts (Jason Lane, amongst others), but this really feels like a bit of a reach.

He signed a letter of intent, but:

1. He might deside not to go and sign with the Astros.
2. I'm sure the Astros recognize that they may not be able to sign him, in which case he goes to UT and can't reenter the draft for another 3 years, I think.

Thumbs, and bottoms up to this years draft.  Solid first round, five tool, lefty pitcher and his SS buddy from Tulane.  Switch hitting, power back stop High schooler from FLA.  Six-five, 220 lbs RHP.  Little Rocket man.  Good stuff, will be fun watching our new boys at the CWS and in the future.

I'm always nervous about high schoolers.  They don't have to sign and most have already committed to a college.  With as many high school kids as the Astros drafted in the first 10 rounds this year I'll feel good after the Astros get them signed.

This is the day when teams draft college players to help fill out rosters (backups and bullpen arms).  It's rare when one of these players shows signs of major league level talent, but it does happen occasionally.  This is also the day when draft and follows are selected.  Recall Corey Bass, a late round pick last year, was recently signed as a draft and follow.

From BA's blog:

Quote:

The Astros popped Ryan Mitchell, a 6-foot-4 righthander from Magnolia (Texas) High in the 20th round. In September of 2003, Prospects Plus ranked Mitchell the No. 10 high school prospect in the Class of 2005. He has not picked up much velocity since then, though he still possesses a good breaking ball and a sturdy frame.

Draft, Follow, Evaluate

Draft a high schooler who attends a community college or community college freshman then follow their play at the community college; then decide whether to try to sign said player after the college season and before the draft.  The Astros did this with Oswalt, among others.

Jim Callis of BA responding to a question in the latest edition of Ask BA regarding Houston's draft outside of Bogusevic and Clemens:

 the link

"Let's break down the rest of Houston's picks in the first five rounds. Supplemental first-rounder Eli Iorg, a Tennessee outfielder, is the son of former big leaguer Garth Iorg. He's got a very interesting mix of power and speed, and he made great strides this year with the Volunteers. Florida high school catcher Ralph Henriquez (second round) also has a baseball connection, as his father Ralph (his high school coach as well) is a roving catching instructor for the Braves. Henriquez has raw power and catch-and-throw potential, though he'll need some time to develop.

Tulane's Tommy Manzella (third) was one of the best pure shortstops in the draft, and he's somewhat reminiscent of his Green Wave predecessor Tony Giarratano, who just came up to the majors with the Tigers. High school righthander Josh Lindblom (also third) was the best prospect in Indiana. He's already 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, and he threw consistently in the 90s all spring.

Area scouts thought Josh Flores was crazy to turn down a six-figure offer from the Braves as an Illinois high schooler in 2004, but after a year at Triton (Ill.) JC he'll come out ahead now that he has gone in the fourth round. Flores, who will move from shortstop to center field, has speed and some pop. Billy Hart (fifth) was a backup quarterback on Southern California's consecutive national championship football teams, and he's also a third baseman with a projectable bat."

Ya gotta love a guy with the name Eli Iorg. I can see the meeting now.

Eli: "Hello, Mr. Purpura. Nice to meet you. Thanks for drafting me."
Purpura: "No problem, but it's actually Count Purpura."
Eli: "Oh."
Purpura: "So you must be Eli Ee-org."
Eli: "Actually, it's pronounced Eye-org."
Purpura: "But they told me it was Ee-org."
Eli: "Well they were wrong then, weren't they?"
"Is this true?"
"Yes, it's true. This man has no dick."

Bogusevice close to signing...
« Reply #150 on: June 30, 2005, 06:43:29 pm »
Word on the street in New Orleans is that Brian Bogusevic is on the verge of signing, and should be locked up by the end of the week. I think ESPN reported sometime today the same information, so it should be acurate. Signing him wasn't anticipated to be an issue, it's always been "when" instead of "if."

My speculation:
He might pitch at Lexington (most likely) or Salem (since Coach Jones didn't overwork him or anything (ala Kenny Baugh with Rice a couple years back), but if so he'll be on a very strict pitch count. I personally would like to see him in Salem as a middle reliever and spot-starter.

Thanks.  Whereever he's assigned, the Astros are already on record as saying they are going to baby his arm as they believe he's already had a heavy work load this season.

I heard today that Josh Lindblom was still negotiating with the Astros but is still far from signing.  I'd guess the Astros are offering far below what Lindblom wants in a signing bonus.

Any new info on Lindblom and Meaker?

I still am of a mind that an organization should do everything they can to sign their top 10 (rounds) picks every year.

Someone on this board probably did the asking, but in case anyone missed it the Purp in a Q & A session said he still hoped to sign Lindblom and that negotiations had occurred within the last week.

No one asked about Meaker.
