Emanuel had a really good second half in RR as a starter.

Will they call him up, or tell him O Come O Come?

Aside from the Cole question, catcher and the bullpen loom large as areas of focus.

Re-sign both catchers. That is the best catching situation we have ever had.

My biggest worry is the front office.  Lots of losses lately most recently Taubman (we all know about that) and, I just saw, Ocampo.  This after previous losses to Milwaukee and Baltimore.  Any thoughts on this?

Comes with success.  People leave for better jobs all the time.  You're focusing on it now, but it's always happened.  Going to lose more, front office and coaching staff.

Yep.  Having the Astros on your resume has never been more valuable.  They should have no shortage of talented and innovative applicants to replace those that left.

Evan Drellich penned a big article for The Athletic in the wake of the Taubman trainwreck that raised criticisms (some deserved, some not) of the "Astros culture."

Buried in the article, he telegraphs that at least two front-office employees would be leaving the Astros this offseason, in addition to Taubman, for reasons that are not currently known.  Ocampo, as a special assistant to the GM, would certainly count as one.  If Drellich is right, we can expect at least one more.

Agree.  I'm guessing Maldonado accepts the Astros offer THIS time...

I'm curious about the Miley replacement.  Who will they reclaim this time?

I see the 2020 rotation as
Verlander
Greinke
McCullers
Sanchez
Urquidy/Valdez/James/FA

I'd put Urquidy well over Sanchez. Sanchez might even get non-tendered.

Just throwing this out there, but...are you sure we don't want to re-sign Miley?  I know he was terrible at the end of the year, but he was really good for most of it.  Re-set?  Would he even be willing to re-sign?

As for a reclamation project...Bumgarner remains....intriguing...to me.

I see the Astros rotation at the start of the season being Verlander, Greinke, McCullers, Urquidy, and Danny Salazar (FA).

I don't see the Astros spending a ton on starting pitching because I think they hope that Whitley will make the rotation at some point during the 2020 season.  So I think that the Astros are going to look for some cheap starting pitching as a stopgap -- Salazar.  And maybe Salazar can be more.  I also wonder if the Astros still see Francis Martes as an option.  He is pitching for Escogito down in the Dominican Winter League.  And of course, there is Abreu who sucked in relief, but is their top pitching prospect after Whitley.  I would also try to resign Aaron Sanchez to a deal with an option, knowing that he won't be available for a good part of the season.

But I think that the Astros are going to spend a ton on the bullpen, which brings me to the next point.

I think its time the Astros cut bait with Devenski.  They already declined his option and he is arbitration eligible, but maybe they don't tender him an offer.  He has been terrible and unreliable now since midway through the 2017 season.  I don't see how the Astros can have any confidence in Devenski at this point in time.  I'd rather bring in a free agent to replace him.

Astros have Osuna, Pressly, Peacock, and James.  So they need to sign at least three relievers.  I'd like to see Harris back in Houston.  And MLBTraderumors has the Astros on Lindblom.  I'd also like the Astros to go after Daniel Hudson.
Boom!

Sanchez may not pitch again until 2021.
