I have promised my self not to get distracted with white hot rage at every stupid thing that Joe Buck says.

His opening Nats sack-gargle is already challenging that position though.

World Series 2019.. Astros vs Nats..    Grieneke pitches to

Turner - strike, bullet to third, Bregman snags it for the 1st out
Eaton - high strike, curve swung over the top for strike 2,  high ball,  outside, tapper in front of the plate, Chririnos grabs it and just nips Eaton  for out 2.
Rendon - first pitch grounded to 3rd, 5-3  3 outs..

After 0.5  Nats 0,  Astros 0

Good at-bat by Springer.  Scherzer appears to be in fine form.  Springer worked him before just missing one.

Bottom of  1 - Max Scherzer on the bump for the Nats..  Pitches to

Springer - ball outside, ball low, slider in there for strike 1, fastball on the inside corner for strike 2, curve way inside,  fly ball to center, 1 out.
Home plate umpire is Jim Wolf
Altuve -  swings over a changeup for strike 1, grounded to short, Turner throws him out 6 -3    2 outs
Brantley - outside,  outside, outside, strike 1 in there, outside for a "walk this way..."
Bregman - changeup in there on the top of the zone for strike 1,  fly ball to right..  3 outs..

After 1, Astros 0,  Nats 0

Top of 2,    Zack Greineke ptiches to

Pissant - ball out, ball down, ball out, strike at the bottom of the zone as Pissant steps out,  line drive to right for a single
Kendrick - ball low, OUTSTANDING!    grounded softly to Greineke who throws it to second and on to first for a DOUBLE PLAY!  1-4-3  2 outs
Cabrera - ball low, ball low, curve ball fouled away, strike called on the outside edge,  grounded to Yuli who steps on 1st for the 3rd out!

After 2.5,  Astros 0, Nats 0

Bottom of 2,  Max Scherzer pitches to

Gurriel - ball inside, ball outside and low, strike at the bottom of the zone,  HOME RUN!    KING YULI!
Alvarez - foul,  anything Pissant can do Yordan can do better,   Line drive to right for a single...
Correa - swings through the changeup for strike 1, inside for ball 1, strike 2 at the knees,   foul,  single to right through a shift hole.. men on 1st and 2nd for
Chririnos - bunt popped straight up to Gomes up the third base side..   1 out
Reddick - blows a bubble,  ball down,  grounded up the first base side didn't get a carom off the bag.. men on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs
Springer - ball down,  ball way down, ball inside,  lined to left, but right at Pissant in left who just gets it off the grass..  3 outs.

After 2, Astros 1, Nats 0

Top 3,   Greineke pitches to

Zimmerman - strike, ball down, wow.. just outside,  grounded softly to Zack who throws him out 1 - 3.   1 out
Gomes - changeup in there for a strike, 91 poured over the heart and stared at.  2 strikes, little fly ball to center   2 out
Robles - first pitch fly ball to center, Springer tracks it down..   3 outs

After 3.5  Astros 1,   Nats 0

But Greinke has fewer through 3 than Schrezer through 2.

If Altuve makes an out on 3 or less pitches again, I may need a new TV.

Belt high FB out over the plate...what are you waiting for?  Smack it the other way!

Was talking about this today; how many hits have you seen to opposite field this post season?  Scant few, and maybe 0 hard hit/homers that way.  In 2017, we hit a bunch out to RF.

Bottom of the 3rd    Max Scherzer pitches to

Altuve - strike 1 in there,  ball down and in,  inside corner for a strike, foul at the plate, may have caught Gomes hand, liner to left over a leaping Turner..   single
Brantley - Foul,  lollipop to left field, Pissant runs in to get it...    1 out
Bregman - ball down, just outside at 95 and down, ball down, 95 right down the pipe for strike 1,  96 on the outside edge, ball 4..    Men on 1st and 2nd for
YULI GURRIEL - ball outside, just missed 95 center cut foul,  ball down and in,   popped up to right,  2 outs
Alvarez - fouled back, ooooo   fouled 96 straight back...  ball high and in, ball down,   oooo just missed it!    Sends the center fielder back to the back of the track..       3rd out.

After 3, Astros 1, Nats 0

Top 4,   Zack Greineke pitches to

Turner - strike called on the curve, swinging at a slider he couldn't hit with a barn door, ball outside, fouled back,  outstanding play by Zack, snags the grounder and throws him out 1 - 3.    1 out
Eaton - just down for ball 1,  another one right to him..   Eaton thrown out 1 - 3 2 out.   Crowd goes absolutely nuts..
Rendon - ball down, ball down, ball down, 90 right down the middle for strike 1, foul back..  STRUCK HIM OUT SWINGING!    3 outs

After 4.5  Astros 1 Nats 0

Yes.  Altuve's first at bat was a blink of an eye and Correa started chasing in that last at-bat once he got the count back to 2-2, bu otherwise they've been disciplined.

See Reddick, Josh.

HPU calling a good zone, and also not giving borderline strikes to pitches who haven't been throwing them.

Bottom 4,   Max Scherzer throws more pitches to

Correa - fouled at the plate, just under a high 94, foul on center cut fastball, inside, inside, foul a nasty slider,  grounded to 2nd  4 - 3, 1 out
Chirinos - strike on the outside edge and down, swinging at a slider and missing,  strike out swinging, hit the ground so he jogs to first and is thrown out 2 -3.  2 out
Reddick - outside, inside and high, on the outside edge for strike 1,  slapped the 68th pitch into right for a single...  turning the lineup over..
Springer -  down and in for ball 1,  70th pitch is a ball outside,  inside,  ball just down for a walk.    Men on 1st and 2nd for
Altuve - almost threw it by Gomes for ball 1, strike at the knees, spiked for ball 2,  can o' corn to center..

76 pitches for Scherzer after 4

Astros 1  Nats 0

That was a soft liner.  The deathblow is there but not being landed.  This will not end well if they don't fix that.

Because it was just off to his side, the easiest ball there is to track down. Unfortunate location.

Pissant - strike on the outside edge, curve fouled weakly behind the plate, just down for ball 1, got him check-swinging at a ball down.   Have a seat Pissant!
Kendrick - outside, fooled Blue with that curve, ball 2, changeup in there for a strike, swinging at a chageup for strike 2, outside and down, ball 4 just down..
Cabrera - outside, swinging strike, outside, bunted to Greineke who throws him out 1 - 3,   2 out
Zimmerman - strike on the inside edge (fooled Chirinos), strike 2 at 71 on the outside edge, ball outside,  popped it up to Yuli.   3 outs

After 5.5 Astros 1, Nats 0

Only one ball has been hit hard off Greinke tonight. To lift him for a guy who has never pitched out of the pen or on two days rest before would be more than questionable. Even if that pitcher is Cole.

Bottom of 5,  Max Scherzer throws more pitches to

Brantley - Outside, outside,  grounded through the shift to right...
Bregman - strike on the outside edge,  inside pitch lined foul...  foul, ball down and out, swung through 95 upper part of zone   1 out.
Gurriel - ball outside, swung though 94 at the knees, swung at a slider he had no chance at,   grounded to third who throws to 2nd.. yuli beats the double play at 1st..     Man on 1st, 2 outs for
Alvarez - inside, inside (90th pitch),  up, swung through a changeup below the zone, up and in for a walk..   Men on 1st and 2nd for
Correa - strike called on an inside pitch,  nasty slider swung through, outside, inside,   smoked just inside the bag off the glove of Rendon.   Brantley scores.     Looking at whether Yordan momentarily came off the bag..   Safe!     Men on 1st and 3rd for
Chirinos - (99th pitch) ball high,  swinging through the changeup, 94 in the zone for strike 2,  just outside for ball 2,  swing and miss..   3 outs..

But the astros pad the lead...

After 5, Astros 2, Nats 0

In my opinion, two is twice as good as one, but that run ruins for the year my quixotic quest to see the Astros win 1-0, my favorite sort of game. They have not won 1-0 all year. They did lose 1-0 once. It was a Verlander start, naturally.

Top 6th,   Zack Greineke pitches to

Gomes - first pitch swinging, can 'o corn to Springer..   1 out
Robles - strike 1, ball 1 on the check swing, strike 2 on the inside, check-swing grounder to Yuli who takes it to the bag 1 U.   2 out
Turner - strike 1 bottom of the zone, changeup fouled off (crowd going crazy),   STRIKE 3 called on the inside edge!   Have a seat MEAT!

After 6.5 stunning innings from Zack Greineke,

Astros 2, Nats 0

This is a little reminiscent of Zack's September 25 game when he threw 108 pitches.

After 6.5 stunning innings from Zack Greineke,

Astros 2, Nats 0

I wish it were 6.5, but it's only 5.5.

Bottom of the 6th,   Patrick Corbin takes the bump for the Nats and pitches to

(crowd loudly buzzing)

Jake Marisnick - Ball 1 inside, ball down..foul, ball inside, slapped into left field for a single.....
Springer - swinging through a slider for strike 1, foul, just down (apparently),  check swing strikeout.      1 out
Altuve - Gee thanks Altuve.. slow roller up the middle, Cabrera steps on 2nd and throws to 1st for the double play.    4-3.    3 outs.

After 6,
   Astros 2  Nats 0

This Astros offense does not have the 2 runs in them needed to win this game.
This opinion is bad and you should feel bad.

Top of the 7th inning..     Zack Greineke pitches to

Eaton - strike 1,  strike 2, badly fooled on the curve and fouled it up the first base line, just outside for ball 1, down and away, grounded to Carlos at short, who throws him out.    6 -3 1 out
Rendon - ball outside,  HR to left...
Pissant - outside, swinging strike at a curve outside, outside, oooo ball on the bottom of zone,  ball four..

That's it for the AWESOME ZACK GREINEKE!

WFH on to face
Kendrick - swinging on a curve, just  hit the foul pole in right..    HR...
Cabrera - ball outside,  ball down,  singled just past a diving Correa..

That's it for Harris...
Roberto Osuna takes the bump and pitches to
Zimmerman - ball, ball, ball, strike, ball 4..
Gomes - Popped up but drifts foul, 97 up and in for ball 1, foul, ball down, foul, popped up on the infield,  Altuve gloves it.   2 outs
Robles - fly ball to Springer in right.    3outs.

After 7.5
   Astros 2,  Nats 3

Bottom of the 7th,   Patrick Corbin pitches with the lead to

Brantley - ball down, ball down and out, strike 1, ball down and out,   Fly ball to center,   Robles tracks it down,  1 out
Bregman - swung over a slider for strike 1, Foul,  foul, just up and out,  grounded to second..   4 -3 2 outs
Gurriel - outside,  strike, ball down, foul,  base hit to center...
Alvarez - swinging at an excellent slider for strike 1, changeup in there for a strike,  nubbed off the end, Corbin gets it and throws him out.   1 -3  3 outs.

After 7,
   Astros 2,  Nats 3

If the Astros go on to lose this, the beat themselves.  If that happens, I hope it burns all winter and spring and they come back and get it next year.

Of course, I'd prefer them to do that now.

Just piece a few good ABs together and get rid of all the long faces in the dugout.

Bottom of the 8th,    Patrick Corbin pitches to

Carlos Correa -  strike1, ball down, swing and miss at 94 on the outside edge, ball down and in,  foul on 95 on the outside edge,  raped on a ball way inside..    strike 3    1 out
Chirinos - ball 1,    Grounded to short, Turner throws the catcher out..   6 -3 2 out
Marisnick - ball down, ball out,  strike at the knees,  strike at the top of the zone, foul, ball down, foul, swung over a slider for strike 3.

After 8
   Astros 2   Nats 4

If they lose this, the offense needs to look in the mirror.  10 LOB tonight, and two runs for a second straight game at home.

Scherzer, Strasburg, Strasburg, Scherzer

If this holds, 10 of the 11 wins will have been games started by those 2.

In this series, the Astros lost 3 of the 4 games started by Cole & Verlander.

No excuse.  They have 10 men left on base tonight and knocked Scherzer out again after 5 innings.  This offense when right is talented enough to hit anyone.

Maybe Cole can't go. Maybe he had him down there to make the Nats *think* he could go, to maybe force Martinez into a mistake.

Everyone that said the Astros were done after Altuve failed to capitalize yesterday was right.
I still think that’s a horseshit take.

At least the MVP will be one of the pitchers or Rendon or Eaton. Not Soto. Small favors.

Maybe Cole can't go. Maybe he had him down there to make the Nats *think* he could go, to maybe force Martinez into a mistake.

Putting Urquidy in that spot is setting him up to fail.  You could tell he was nervous after he yanked the first curveball to Eaton.

Top of the 9th,    Joe Smith pitches to

Zimmerman - Strike 1,   Stroked up the middle for a single...
Gomes - strike,  ball out,   slow roller to smith who throws to 2nd to get the force..  relay to 1st not in time..  1 out
Robles - swinging strike 1,   duck snort to center that Jake can't run down..  single..
Turner - strike 1 on the outside edge, ball outside,  foul, foul, foul, ball in, ball in, managed to check his swing..   walk to load the bases.

That's it for Smith..  Urquidy coming in to pitch to
Eaton - ball 1 way inside,  up the middle scores 2..       Game over.
Rendon - ball up,   foul,  ball 2,  ball 3 outside, foul,  popped up on the infield, Correa gloves it for the 2nd out
Pissant - ball inside,  fly ball to Jake in center for the 3rd out.

After 9.5
   Astros 2,   Nats 6

Ballgame.   Everyone that said the Astros were done after Altuve failed to capitalize yesterday was right.  This hurts.
The Astros had plenty of chances to nullify that occurrence. I wish they would have had done that before the top of the 9th inning. We need 4 to keep playing 5 to win.

The Astros come to bat in the bottom of the 9th chasing 4 runs...

Hudsen pitches to

George Springer - strike 1, popped up to second..   1 out
Jose Altuve - strike 1,  strike 2 on the outside edge, swinging strikeout   2 out
Michael Brantley - inside for ball 1, strike on the bottom of the outside edge, inside ball 2,  long foul ball  couldn't keep it fair, ball 3 inside, foul,  swinging over a changeup for the final out of the 2019 season.

Congrats to the Washington Nationals for playing their asses off and beating a juggernaut of a team.     First World Series in history where the road team won every game.

Embrace the void.

Final score:   Astros 2,  Nationals 6

And absent some off-season sorcery by Luhnow, they're going to have to try to get back here next year with a team weaker than this one.
Probably no Cole. Possibly no Harris. Gurriel and Reddick a year older at ages where that really starts to matter. Springer and Altuve entering their 30's. Correa a question mark.
They will have Alvarez for a full year. And whatever Tucker turns out to be. Not sure Whitley will be ready after a lost season this year...

They're going to be a good team for quite a while longer. One that consistently contends, frequently makes the playoffs and can make a deep run if they get or make a few breaks. But this may be the end of them as a 'superteam.'

I’m talking about how they got pushed to the brink of elimination twice by the Astros and Dodgers and found a way to win both series with the odds strongly against them.  I never said the Nationals weren’t a good team.  They have three really good starting pitchers and a solid offense.  Martinez figured out how to manage his lack of a bullpen much better in the playoffs, too.

That was a great atmosphere and experience until the 7th.

AJ watched Grienke give up a homer and a walk on a BS call, then he brought in his best reliever who failed.  And then the rest of the pen failed.  And Jake made an uncharacteristic error. Yes I would have preferred to keep Grienke in the 7th, or walk Soto, but that's only because the decisions made in the game didn't work.

So LOBsters were a huge problem again, and the bullpen turned a 1 run lead into a 4 run deficit, and we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Congrats to the Nats.  I hope I don't see any coverage for awhile.   Like ever.

Now we've got a long drive back to Dallas.

Good night.  Go Astros.

Harris was genuinely bad in Game 6, but last night was a brutal break. I'm not even sure the HR pitch was a strike...

The Springer lineout with runners on in the second was the 'what if' offensively that stands out the most.

He scorched that ball.

Harris was genuinely bad in Game 6, but last night was a brutal break. I'm not even sure the HR pitch was a strike...
It wasn’t. Harris actually threw a pretty damn good pitch and Kendrick did a great job to hit it out.

The bad part about it, is that away is Kendrick’s sweet spot. We had been pitching him up and in most of the series and had done well. Harris’ pitch was a great pitch in a great location, just the wrong hitter to throw it too.

The Springer lineout with runners on in the second was the 'what if' offensively that stands out the most.

He scorched that ball.
True, but there were a ton of what if’s regarding our AB’s with runners in scoring position.

Article this morning said that Kendrick had not hit a homerun on a pitch in that location all year and that he normally pounds it into the ground.

The Astros were 4-29 with runners in scoring position in the four home losses; 11-28 in the three road wins.  That’s the series in a nutshell.  It was the same story against the Yankees, but the difference was the pitching remained near perfect the entire series to pick up the offense.  That didn’t happen in the four home games in the World Series.

The Astros won 5/6 road games in the ALCS/WS.  Lost 4/6 home games.   Baseball be crazy sometimes.

He was not genuinely bad anytime. He had to stand around for 20 minutes while the unnecessary delay went on and on,

Pitchers give up homers, and Rendon is no scrub. Harris was great this year, and last night was cruel,

On a lighter note,  we were in section 105 (formerly known as Keuchel's corner).

The seats were fantastic.  Afforded a great view of the field and the pitch path (up down was easy,  just couldn't tell in/out).  The fans were into it.  Stood during all the action until the bottom fell out.  Seemed to be the case across the stadium.

Don't know how it was on TV, but the HPU seemed to have a delayed strike call.   May have just been our angle. But we finally picked up on his left hip movement that seemed to be the trigger to initiating the called strike.   We had fun doing our own versions when Grienke got a call.

So shout out to section 105.

There were a lot of baseball experts in the bathroom at the park and at Buccees pontificating for all to hear.

Surprised none of them asked why Chirinos called for the homerun pitch instead of the swing and miss pitch.

I watched him. He froze and maybe took a small step back to play it on the hop. The hen realized it would carry to him and reached out to catch it at the grass. Would have been 3-0.

Did you watch Greinke’s interview? He regretted the pitch selection and said he had to shake (signs off) to get to it. He said the location was good, but it was the wrong pitch. Watched the replay, and it looked like a changeup.

Also, the 2-1 pitch to Soto was a strike called a ball to go to 3-1.

I've had more than one pitcher blame me for giving up a home run:

Pitcher:  "you're the one who called a fastball"

Me:  "I didn't tell you to hit the bat with it"
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

HPU had trouble with those Greinke curves that seemed to be catching the bottom of the front of the zone but were caught very low.

I thought that overall the HPU did a very good job. But he missed a few, and they came at critical times.

According to the umpire auditor on Twitter, game 7 was the worst ever. 89% or something on correct ball/strike calls. Pretty much even between the teams, but as we all saw, done of the worst calls both ways were at critical points.

My seats were too high up to judge HPU’s work, but he looked consistent. Only y’all watching TV can say. The replay of the 2-1 pitch to Soto shows HPU missed it, and Greinke’s reaction showed he thought so too. I am beyond bummed about Greinke’s effort being wasted, and the media’s fixation on “it should have been Cole” in the 7th angers me. Hinch made the absolute correct choice if Greinke was coming out. After Eaton grounded out in the 7th, I allowed myself to think “If he gets the next two guys, he may pitch a complete game shutout.” I did not say it to anyone, but maybe my thought alone jinxed him. Ugh.

I keep thinking (against my rational mind) this result was pre-ordained. Certainly was at least bad luck at the worst time.

The view on television for the first 6 innings HPU Wolf was consistent calling pitches that were on the edge of the box as strikes. After the 6th his zone got larger and inconsistent.

Harris decision, imo: he trusted Harris in that situation more than Greinke. Longer history with him, excellent season and postseason, had Ked Kendrick in key situation in DC.
