His ability to be that quick to hammer the high inside fastball after seeing all those breaking pitches low and away was an Alou-like feat.

Bottom 1

Scherzer pitching

Springer works a 3-2 count,  walks on a close  slider that misses the spot
Altuve singles sharply on the first pitch,  Springer to 2nd
Brantley falls 0-2, Ks swinging on a nasty cutter
Bregman also goes 0-2, slider is in the dirt,  Springer reaches 3rd on the WP, count 1-2, next pitch is low 2-2, Ks swinging in front of a changeup,  Altuve steals 2nd
Gurriel also 0-2, takes low 1-2, drives a double off thre bullpen fence in left; Springer and Altuve score
Correa Ks swinging on a FB

End 1

Agreed.  For me, he is the most underrated hitter in the Astros’ lineup.  Everyone knows Altuve and Bregman can hit anyone hard, but Yuli has proven he can do the same in the postseason.

Yuli has become the defensive gem that Bagwell was at first.  He's been a gem to me to a long time.

Top 2

Kendrick grounds out 6-3 (Yuli pulled off bag but applied the tag)
Cabrera pops out to Correa behind the mound
Zimmerman homers to center; Cole knew it immediately
Suzuki ahead 2-0, then 2-2, 3-2, fouls a FB, greyhounds deep in the hole,  backhanded by Correa,  throw pulls Yuli,  Suzuki ruled out for avoiding the tag out of the baseline

That pitch was center-cut...

And down in the zone.  Smoltz had his scoring report spot on.

Top 3

Robles pops out to Gurriel near home plate
Turner chops out 5-3
Eaton quickly 0-2, takes 99 near his eyes 1-2, lines a single to left just past a diving Bregman
Rendon misses a FB, takes a curve for strike 2, checks on a breaking ball 1-2, takes a FB outside,  snap throw to first is just late,  fouls a FB to the right side,  fouls another FB 2-2, flies out to Springer F8

Bottom 4

Altuve flies out F9
Brantley late on a FB 0-1, misses a high cutter (?), fouls a high FB 0-2, checks 1-2, laces a cutter for a single to RF
Bregman takes a FB that dots the corner 0-1, takes a FB on the inside corner 0-2, Ks swinging on a high FB out of the zone
Gurriel takes FB low 1-0, another is high 2-0, pops to shallow center,  too far a run for CF Robles to field it; Brantley held at 3rd, Yuli at 2nd with a double; ump's asked if Pettis assisted Brantley's stop; he didn't
Correa takes an offspeed strike 0-1,  fouls 0-2, a change is low 1-2, another also low 2-2, Ks swinging on a slider way outside

Should point out that Scherzer had thrown 4 seamers,  cutters and changeups that inning.

That might have been his first slider, near same speed as the cutter.

But damn it was outside a mile.

MLB review is a jooooooooke.

The fact that something that obvious can't be reviewed tells you all you need to know about the umpire's union.

Bottom 4

Alvarez rips a single up the middle
Maldonado fouls a bunt attempt 0-1, does it again 0-2, takes a ball in the dirt 1-2, FB away 2-2, change is low 3-2, flies out to deep left
Reddick fouls a FB, he says bat contacted the catcher's glove (it did) but can't be reviewed 0-1, change is outside 1-1, FB outside 2-1, pops out to shallow left; missed a good one and knows it
Springer 2-0, takes a center cut FB for a strike 2-1, FB outside 3-1, misses a change and falls down 3-2, wails on a low change
Altuve pops an off speed pitch foul 0-1, cutter outside 1-1, misses a middle middle FB 1-2, change is low 2-2, chops fouls down 3rd base line, FB outside 3-2, fouls a breaking ball 3-2,
dribbles one off the end of the bat and is thrown out 3-1

End 4
Nationals 2
Astros 2

Cole is so hittable today. Catching a ton of the zone with his fastball and scuffing with his command of the breaker.

Top 5

Suzuki walks
Robles singles to right after failing at bunt attempts, Suzuki to 2nd
Turner gets ahead 3-1, flies out F9, Suzuki advances to 3rd
Eaton takes a FB for a strike 0-1, breaks his bat but singles to right,  Suzuki scores, Robles 2nd
Rendon hits into a 5-4 FC, just beats the throw, Robles to 3rd
Soto ahead 2-0, takes a curve way off 3-0, takes change for a strike 3-1, misses another 3-2, doubles a slider off the wall in left,  both runners score
Kendrick fouls 0-1, change is low 1-1, lines out to a diving Correa; great play

Mid 5
Nationals 5
Astros 2

Not even close. They're facing one of the top 5 pitchers in baseball. He's controlled his damage. Cole has not.

Only kind of. Had him on the ropes in the 1st and let him wiggle out, then runners on and no damage sense.

It is, but the Astros have missed opportunities with runners in scoring position.  They now have four innings to get at least three runs.

Playing catch up against a team that has gotten to the WS totally rested is a recipe for disaster.

Also, that missed catcher’s interference cost at least a run. Springer would’ve walked to load the bases, Altuve’s groundout would have scored a run, and it’d be 2nd and 3rd 2 outs for Brantley.

Corbin needs to start for them. The Nats don't have a bullpen.  That's why they're employing their game 3 starter in game 1.

Our world historical offense has but to rouse.

We'll see if it does.

The most important thing here is that Cole isn't untouchable anymore.

No pitcher off his game is untouchable.

Diaz on deck to pinch hit for Reddick.

Reddick puts on a bat performance after every out, where’s the harm in putting in Tucker at this point?

Diaz just missed a pitch that should be in the Crawford Boxes.

Bottom 6

Corbin (LHP) pitching

Correa 3-2, Ks on a good slider
Alvarez singles to right
Maldonado 3-2, Ks swinging
Diaz hits for Reddick, quickly 0-2, grounds out up the middle into the shift 4-3

End 6
Nationals 5
Astros 2

Game one is in serious jeopardy, boys.

I have zero confidence in the offense's ability to salvage this fucking shit show Cole left to be cleaned up.

Cole was off his game and untouchable in game 3 against the Yanks. Now he's just touchable.

As disappointing as Cole's outing has been, the offense has had so many opportunities to plate runs this game and has consistently come up empty. I hate that Cole will be the story.

Reddick’s defense still is head and shoulders above Tucker’s and Tucker has looked overmatched at the plate, too.

Bottom 7

Rainey (RHP) pitching

Springer homers over the pump in left center

He swung through a totally hittable pitch as well.

of course, they can still win, it's only a two run lead, but they have to plate the runners.

Yordan's troubles have been in three areas:

1.  Not swinging at the first pitch -- even if its down the middle
2.  When he has swung at a hittable pitch -- he's not got around on it - he's been late (hands)
3.  When he gets down in the count - he expands his zone and swings at some wild shit

It feeds off of itself, though.  If he wasn't always so behind in the count, he wouldn't have to chase/guess/be late.

Yordan just failed in a big spot, but he’s had an encouraging night at the plate.  Two singles and a walk before that appearance.

FWIW, I think Yordan's big problem is the long season. I think he's tired. People used to talk about that. Maybe it isn't true anymore.

time for machete to get a hit so diaz can bunt him over and springer can get  him home.  jose will then get a double, they'll walk Brantley again.  then bregman will finally get a hit.

he was rested during the season.  and if he's that tired then take him off the roster.

Very well could be...  He has done his fair share of yard work this season.

Have no basis for this, but watching from afar --- just think he would be so effective if swung at the first pitch inside fastball around his knees.  And then, he could make the adjustment on the outside of the plate --- use the Crawford Boxes as his Bitch.....

Anyhow, tonight has been better.

Hudson got away with that first 2 stronge FB to Altuve.

He pulled 97 mph foul.

So close.

This thing goes into extra innings and you'll be looking for a straw long enough to slurp coolant out of your jeep.

Botton 8
Hudson still in

Tucker hits for Maldonado, misses 95 0-1, singles to center on a FB up in the zone
Diaz takes a FB for a strike 0-1, flies out to  center,  Tucker adroitly tags and goes to 2nd
Springer slider away 1-0, fouls another slider 1-1, FB sails 2-1, doubles off the wall in right,  Tucker scores
Altuve fouls a FB 0-1, flails at a pitch in the next county 1-2, pulls 97 foul (holy crap), flies out to RF on FB off the plate

Doolittle gets the call

Brantley takes a high strike 0-1, strike 2 is a FB off the plate 0-2, fouls a high FB, lines out to left

End 8
Nationals 5
Astros 4

Cole sucking ass and the offense being the playoff offense is the story tonight.

I'm not sure what the fuck Bregman is up there looking for. That 2-1 92mph fastball right down the middle should have been crushed. Instead he has to swing at a 94mph pitchers pitch and strikes out. I love Bregman but fuck man, the whole postseason he just seems to want to walk rather than hit.

This is the story of the game.

Story of the game is Cole falling to earth. We're worse now, a lot, and it's going to be harder.

No idea what’s going on. We got the CWS their first WS win since 1917, and we gift wrapped a win for a team whose city won last in 1924

It would be nice if the aliens returned Alex Bregman to the team and took away this impostor.

A timely hit here or there.. and it'd be a different story.

If Springer’s double is a foot higher, we’re still playing.

If Brantley didn't hit the outfielder on the numbers with that line drive...

If he runs hard out of the box instead of skip-to-my-looing, does he have a triple and score on Altuve's fly out to right?

The ball kicked right to the center fielder, so probably not. Still no excuse for not running all out...

Alan Porter must have a hard on for Bregman. His zone has been solid except for Alex. He's called 5 off the plate strikes on him.
I thought so too. He was pretty solid all night except when Bregman was in the box.

FWIW, I think Yordan's big problem is the long season. I think he's tired. People used to talk about that. Maybe it isn't true anymore.
FWIW, Bowden and Duquette said the same thing on the radio. They think Alvarez is tired.

But for a DH????? Don’t know about that.

Yes, he does. If you go back and look at the replay, by the time the ball is fielded by the cutoff man on the first base side of second, George is already almost a third of the way PAST second base, stopped running and is back into hopping/skipping mode. Based on where he was when the cutoff man fields the ball, if he is running out of the box, it is a standup triple and he probably scores the tying run on the next fly out.

This single incident didn’t cost us the game, but was just one more thing that kept us from winning.

Springer is dead meat if he tries for 3B.  Tucker had to hold up at 2B, and I was wondering if he was even going to score.  Springer would have had to slow up approaching 2B anyway.  It's possible the Nats misplay the throw and Springer makes it to 3B, but you don't make that out at 3B.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I don't see why DHing would make such a big difference. He's waking up and going to work and running the bases (or not). He also did play in the field quite a bit this year.

Probably not but I hate that shit.  He do that....the ball better be out of the park.

I think that he thought, "either it's out or I'm out."  If Eaton goes all the way to the wall instead of a step short and leaping he probably catches it.
