JV on short rest
« on: October 08, 2019, 04:35:23 am »
One of my best TZ friends is worried about Hinch’s decision. There is a great article on At Bat which should convince even the most anxious the decision to pitch him is correct, win or lose. One thing I learned while coaching playoff games is to do everything possible to win today and to not hold anything back for an uncertain tomorrow.

Agreed JV brings a confidence to this team that the others don't, including Cole.

I think JV wouldn't jeopardize advancing if he wasn't going to be ready.

And finally, I trust Hinch. He's gotten them this far.

Your second sentence was my response to my friend. JV would speak up if he thought he was not up to a start on short rest.

I'd rather get whatever we get from JV today and Cole on Thursday then to leave one of those bullets in the chamber.

Don't play it safe, don't hope that the rookie can get the job done. Go for the jugular.

I love the move, win or lose, it's the winning decision

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

If the original plan was to have Verlander waiting in relief in case Urquidy exits with a lead, it makes imminent sense to simply start with Verlander anyway when you know you have Cole ready to go on full rest if there has to be a game 5.

There really is no downside to the move.  Verlander would still be available for either game 1 (on short rest) or game 2 (on normal rest) of a potential ALCS, and it gives you the best chance to avoid an ALDS game 5 that would cause you to lose Cole for ALCS games 1-2 anyway.

What bothers me more than JV going today is the talk about the rotation for the ALCS.  Win today.

As for me, I'm wearing my orange today, which I do not care for as much as the navy, but this is the shirt I wore on Opening Day when JV beat the Rays.  Frito Pie and Love Street.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I have the Springer jersey and am meeting Neil for frito pie for lunch.

Which location?  I may try to join.

Avalon on Westheimer at noon.

I get it.  My only point is that the JV move gives the Astros the luxury of satisfying the immediate need - "win today" - with no strings attached, e.g. the Nationals only getting to start Scherzer once in the NLDS.

Yeah, I'm much more concerned about the bullpen moves (bringing in Pressley for no reason in Game 1, bringing in Osuna instead of Harris in the 8th in Game 2) than what they will get out of JV. He's about as solid as they come.
