The A’s tagged him for seven singles and a walk on Tuesday in chasing him in the first inning. Their hitters committed to staying inside Miley’s cutter and hitting it the other way.“I think the other team has a really good approach against me right now and I’m not making the adjustment,” Miley said. “Again I felt like, it’s crazy, I located pitches pretty well for the nine batters I was in there. I got singled to death tonight. But at the same time, I’ve got to make better pitches.”The cutter revived Miley’s career last season while he was with the Brewers, and his heavy usage of it isn’t likely to change. It lacked in August on the days his fastball command faltered, as the two pitches work in tandem. But he threw 20 of his 28 pitches for strikes on Tuesday, so that wasn’t the issue against the A’s.“Their approach was pretty incredible,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.After he was bounced Tuesday night, Miley spent the rest of the game studying video. In his opinion, the A’s hitters’ swings didn’t suggest that he tipped his pitches. If it’s as simple as the opposition figuring out an approach to combat his cutter, he will have to adjust.
They intentionally beat the shift with stay inside the ball swings. Look for more of that.

Exactly. I am surprised it took so long. I am reminded of a story I heard from a high school coach. His team was facing a fire baller who could not throw his curve for a strike. So he had them practice hitting fastballs thrown from in front of the mound and laying off curveballs all the time. Simple but effective.
