Astros @ Blue Jays, September 1, 2019
« on: September 01, 2019, 12:36:36 pm »
Gurriel scratched today with a sore elbow

Noting for the Astros in the first, Verlander struggles with command a little in the bottom half, but no damage

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

What did you think of Yuli's plunking yesterday?

Did the catcher jump out just because he saw Yuli was irritated?

Probably.  Given how wild that guy was and the situation I doubt it was intentional.

As the inning unfolded that pitcher sampled a lot of territory out of the zone.

I wonder what's going through Altuve's mind on pitches like that third strike.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Reddick hit 3 HR in April, 2 in May and 5 in June.  He did not hit one in July or August.

Reddick's insistence on trying to pull everything disgusts me. There was no one on the left side of the infield and strike two, which he took, was the perfect pitch to slap into left field. Instead he swings as hard as he can at everything, trying to hit the ball into the right field bleachers. Baseball in 2019.

Needing only two pitches to retire L’Vlad and Smoak after painting the inside corner on L’Bidge was a pretty nice.

And another thing that annoys me - AJ seems awfully cavalier with Verlander's starts. I understand he gives guys scheduled days off, but if a guy like Yuli is a last minute scratch, why would you keep Springer out of the lineup?

He was so, so good at that the first couple of months of the season and has completely gone away from that approach.

It would be 3 wins lost in the last couple of weeks, if he doesn't get the win today.
Win-loss record isn't weighed as heavily in the voting as it used to be, but this run of strong starts without results might still hurt his Cy Young chances.

Fouling off FBs put him in a hole. I hope someone works with this.

As soon as he got to 0-2, you knew the next pitch was going to be a slider down and in that he would swing over. The progression is very predictable now, and he's going to have to hurt some people with those early fastballs before it changes.

Giles celebrated strikeout out the side last night pretty long and hard...can't say there wasn't a little extra satisfaction with today's outcome.

I'm having a cigar and a cold Crawford Bock.  I hope JV is enjoying one with Chirinos.  And Toro has something extra special coming his way.

I think it's just fine.  To be honest, I can't tell a whole lot of difference between the two, especially when smoking a cigar.  But yeah, the rainbow gut can is appropriate.

Verducci:

https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/09/01/justin-verlander-astros-three-no-hitters-youth-wisdom-peak

Great article, which underscores the history made yesterday. I am fortunate to have seen Koufax, Ryan, and Verlander in person more than once.

Ryan was a freak, and it will be interesting to follow JV as he ages. Ryan’s stats are mind-boggling: seven no-hitters AND twelve (!) one-hitters (one of these was a pop up near second base, but the 2B and SS played “I’ve got it, you take it” and let the ball drop on the infield dirt). Feller also had twelve one-hitters. The most mind-boggling of all about Ryan is no-hitter 6 was at age 43, and no-hitter 7 was at 44.
