Greinke
« on: August 24, 2019, 08:14:21 am »
I love watching him pitch. What he did to Trout last night was something to see. What a contrast to JV and Cole.

I think I would make a two year extension offer to Cole to try to entice him to pitch with them for the balance of their contracts. His payday will be big enough, and there still will be time for a megadeal. Not likely, I know.

Not on topic, but related to Greinke.

I figure there isn’t enough data for the Astros to draw conclusions, but based on the few games I’ve seen, the typical Astros shifting and ground balls off Greinke are at a mismatch.  It just seems that he has been screwed over numerous times, and I can’t recall it benefiting him.  Maybe it’s just a small sample, or maybe ground balls off him are outliers from the bulk of other pitchers

He is 4-0 and does not appear to be concerned about hits, especially soft contact ones. Not every ground ball to an open space is caused by a shift. My guess is if it becaomes a problem, he will speak up, and the Astros will adjust.

I grew up an Astros fan,  so I love seeing batters getting blown away.

But I do enjoy watching Grienke employ his craft.

Fastball:  88
Changeup: 87

Yeah, strikeouts are nice, but I love watching actual pitching.

Great article. Crane thinks big. Not excited to see Cole and Verlander as Sports Illustrated cover boys.

Crane is apparently a bottom line guy,
Quote
“Who is Josh Rojas?” Crane asked....
(Later) ...“O.K.,” Crane said, measuredly. “So you’re holding up this deal for a late-round utility guy who is having a good year?”

Crane is apparently a bottom line guy,

Big fan of Crane's approach there.  Offer perspective by boiling the situation down to its essence, but don't editorialize and leave the decision to the baseball people.  Drayton no doubt would have tried to influence the decision.

Also love that Crane worked out the financial aspect with AZ's owner before the deal was done to save time later.  Not sure if that's a common practice or not.

Great read, and it makes it apparent that Jim Crane knows baseball and is a perfect complement to Jeff Lunhow.

When McLane sold to Crane the ownership position improved by several WAR points.

Drayton would have left the decision to Pam Gardner.

In other Drayton news, he is suing Crane for purposely tanking in 2012-13 to undermine Comcast Sportsnet. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/Drayton-McLane-charges-Jim-Crane-Astros-tanked-14484014.php

"I told them I'd never done anything in business without setting goals," McLane said. "I wanted them to tell me how many games we were going to win that season. They looked real strangely at me and finally Bill said, `Drayton, we don't do that in baseball.'

"I asked what we did in baseball. They said we play them one at a time."

There was an awkward pause as Wood and Howe apparently considered how best to deal with this new boss.

"Well, Drayton, how many games do you think we're going to win?" Wood asked.

"I've been thinking about that," he replied. "Why don't we try for 130? Bill looked at me like I was crazy. He said, `Drayton, this is going to be the 124th year of major league baseball, and if we win 130 games, we'll do something that hasn't been done in 124 years.'

I forget why I had soured so much on McLain... Oh yeah, it was that time he held Selig’s dick when they fucked Crane into the AL. FWIW I’m over the AL switch.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
