Greinke with a quick 1st...
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Eschenfelder is as bad as Kalas at pronouncing Spanish names.

you’d think with a name like Eschenfelder you’d want to get pronunciations close to correct.

Yeah, all the stress of being paid to watch and comment on baseball games just builds up over time.

I wonder if Berkman had an opportunity to interview Hinch if he would ever shut up and listen to the answer?

I heard Hinch in an interview say that both Maldonaldo and Chirinos would catch Greinke.

Maybe keep "Worrell Button" but add "Lance" as a verb.

Ex: "Goddamn it. TK, Blummer and Julia are on vacation again. I think I'm going to Lance the Worrell Button."

Springer Ks and Altuve impatiently falls behind and squibs one,  Josh caught in a rundown gets tagged,  Altuve to 2nd.

Not good from George/Jose.

Greinke in a little trouble

Infield single, walk, wild pitch, now a sac fly. Still runner at 3B, one out...

Wild pitch, though Chirinos certainly didn’t help him out.

They'll call it a wild pitch because it hit dirt, but Chirinos's job back there is to stop that pitch.

I'm sure glad I started Lester for my OWA fantasy team tonight. Another stellar effort.

That was ugly. What was Correa thinking? Altuve barely had to move for that ball, there was no reason for Correa to head over there.

how bad is Greinke missing? hard to tell from my high-home position.

He's had a couple of 4-pitch walks where he really wasn't close.

I wish he hadn't been close on that last pitch.

The infield has been unkind tonight.

Are the regular cameramen off tonight too?  What the fuck is going on.  Amateur hour all around with this broadcast.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I just saw the video of Alvarez's home run. Holy shit! It was a line drive way back into the upper deck. A LINE DRIVE with a 25 deg. launch angle ended up in the upper tank. 112.5 mph exit velocity. Wow!

Yeah, all the stress of being paid to watch and comment on baseball games just builds up over time.

These schedules are in place well ahead of time, and they are about to leave on a long road trip. What they do may not seem tough, but it is tiring.

You know, for a guy who’s otherwise a bonehead, he does know some things about baseball and does have some interesting and thoughtful insights. He’d be fine if he cut down on his chatter by about two thirds.

One of my favorite things about Jim Deshaies was when he would explain pitch selection, count, location, etc.  He's say things like "two sliders down and away, so he's got him set up to come hard in..."  Berkman has the same insights.  If only everything didn't lead to "when I was playing..."

It doesn't sound like he's had any significant schooling on being a broadcaster. The network needed someone for a few days here-n-there to fill in since they dole out in-season vacations and they start a list of most well-known ex-Astros. I wonder why they don't or can't get Bagwell to come in for these games. He has some modicum of broadcasting experience. Or maybe dust Dierker off?

No doubt Berkman has verbal diarrhea, but Eschenfelder is part of the problem. A play by play guy has to control the booth and respond to the tempo of the game. But Eschenfelder is a studio host by trade, and a studio host is trained to just tee up the commentators around him. So he’s teeing up a guy who just won’t quit talking instead of controlling the booth.

He certainly was all over their alignment and pitch selection/location and runner being held on first with Altuve up.

Eschenfelder is absolutely a huge part of the problem. But Lance wasn't that much better with Kalas. In fact, Kalas seemed to sort of egg him on.

All of this goes to show that broadcasting baseball is not all that easy a thing to do well. JD and BB were GOAT I think, but Kalas and Blum are far, far better than most. Lots of other teams have the equivalent of Eschenfelder and Lance every game. Or worse.

Schooling? Are you kidding? He’s Lance Berkman. No one can tell him how to talk on an Astros broadcast.

My guess is Bagwell does not want to commit that much time. No Dierker ever, please. His arrogance knows no bounds.

Or worse.

Speaking of JD and Blummer...just an observation:  I think JD was better at strategy...alignments, matchups, pitch selection, etc...why they did what they did.  Blum is better at the technical things, swing mechanics, positioning of fielders, how a guy had his feet wrong and that's why the ball ate him up, or arm got under a ball and it sailed.... Both are strengths.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Greinke's updated pitching line that night: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER.

Error  is what it was originally scored, and it should have been error all along. His helping Bregman hurt Greinke’s ERA. Scorers often do not think when the play is close. Someone (Hinch or Luhnow’?) has been talking to him.

I did not know they had this much time to change a decision. Changes happened in RR my first year when I was on the payroll and knew things, but I did not think they had this much time.

Greinke's ERA went from 3.08 to 2.91 just by that change alone

The official scorer has 24 hours after the game to submit his scoring report, so he/she can change the call within that 24 hour period.  After that, a player or club can petition the Commissioner's office for a scoring review within 72 hours following submittal of the official scorer's report.  The Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations can change the scoring within that time period if he determines the official scorer's call was "clearly erroneous".  So either Greinke or the club petitioned to have it reviewed and changed, and the EVP agreed it was a bad decision.

Likely the club, imo. That time frame is what I recall from my RR experience.
