Does census trend = RIP OWA?
« on: July 16, 2019, 08:07:11 am »
Am I reading the census wrong?
According to the forum history,...  (scroll down.)

1.  Only 21 new registrations since 2016!  None in 2018 or so far in 2019.
2.  Of the 21 in 2017, there were 11 since Aug 2017.  My 1 Sep 17 "registration" was not "new".  It was a due to ISP change from a move that blocked my access to FLSnuffy.

Since 1 Sep 2017, the OWA population appears to have only grown by 10.
How many OWA members have croaked or retired from the site?
This is a great site for folks that love the Astros!
Hope I am wrong, but I would hate to see it die due to negative pop growth.

Of course people come and go, and we had at least one death I remember well. OWA will last as long as the Astros do.

No data available prior to 2007 and 951 registrations in 2010.
I would have expected a surge with the 2017 WS.

There was an avalanche of bots at one point, so they definitely closed registration for a while.

Registration is not disabled, it's just controlled due to the thousands of undesirables who try to sneak in.  Perhaps everyone who is anyone is already here?

We've had births, deaths, and marriages.  As Steve Earle said:

Fall turned to winter, another year gone
Over and over again
Some took their lives from the land and moved on
Some stayed on to plow it back in
The good Lord he giveth, and he taketh away
And the restless shall go, and the faithful shall stay.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The last line should be on the OWA masthead.

So this caught my attention and motivated me to try registering a dummy account myself.  Results in a database error.  Well, fuck.

You wouldn't know it, but I'm here every day.  Have been for a decade, and I'm grateful for the "company."  "Read more, post less" has been a good guiding principal for me on these boards and in many other parts of life, so I guess I'll chime in again sometime in the 2020s.

I've only been around since April of 2015. I've told this story before but the short version is, the George Springer grand slam robbery was the day I joined, I was at that game and was so jazzed up about the Astros I had to find a community share that. Glad I found this wonderful place. It's made watching Astros games much more enjoyable from enemy territory.

I'm not going anywhere, no matter how many times I disagree with Jim.

I was in Nacogdoches when I first started posting. Yes, I am familiar with both. I still have an old driver's license from there that has my address listed as "5 miles south of Nacogdoches on hwy 59"

Now, I am in the Houston area, but live just off the EasTex freeway, so I figured it would still count.

And yes, April 6th was my last post before today.

I should probably go back to lurking before I say something stupid.

Nacogdoches, beautiful sound but the devil to spell.
Moved from Colmesneil to Velasco.  Later hurricane Carla pushed us back to Colmesneil for a little vacation.
Regarding saying sumthing stupid, it's a good place to learn.  Never thot I would learn so much gammer at a baseball forum.....

I lurked for about a year but started posting around when Ensberg and the rest got robbed during Spring Training. I think I helped confirm what a shithole Kissimmee is.

Grew up in Galveston, then school in San Antonio before moving to Tampa 30+ years ago.

I think I started reading often and posting rarely back around '97 or '98. I didn't start posting often until '05.

Way back I remember JimR posting on the usenet at alt.fan.mlb.astros prior to '97. In fact, I think I remember we had an argument or two. I lost.

I can't remember how long I've been hanging around here but I've lived in Corpus, Shreveport, north Texas and now Georgetown as a member.
I was definitely here in the '90s and several of you were well established by then.  It is kind of mind-boggling to think how long it's been.

I joined so that I'd sound smarter when I wrote about the 'stros for Houstonist (RIP).  Went to my first opening day with the group 10 years ago, a few weeks after getting married.  Now I'm taking my oldest son (who loves Straw and Yordan) to his own baseball games.

Man, I do not remember posting there or arguing with you. If I won, I must have been lucky.

Dunno.

Come on, Coach. You know you argued with him and bested him. I know this because I lost a few arguments to you in the early going. But you're always as respectful as your opponent is willing to be.

I got my start "here" in 1997.  It was shocking to me that there would be a community of Astros fans since I had been an Astros fan since 1978 but had never lived in Astros territory so never had a meaningful discussion with another Astros fan.  Completely foreign to me.  Pandora's box was surely opened.

Two words:  Shit Zone
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Amen!

I did not get the humor of introducing the newly drafted Colt .45s via the Sunday comics section until years later, but I kept them in a scrapbook for decades.  Later I listened to their games on Cinn, Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Miami stations - some had very strong signals.  It was great to SEE them in the playoffs on nationwide TV.  Love the Game Zone to actually share the ebb and flow of the games.  Next best thing was reading the HC or HP in the local library if they carried it - or subscribing to the SN when it was a baseball paper.

There are some Second Hand Lions here, but it's still a great place for those that love the Astros.

(Look forward to seeing more being able to join the fun - especially those that live so far away.  This makes the Astros so much closer.)

Combating Low OBP With Replacement-Level Little Leaguers by Jack Sutherford

Oh, and

Quote from: Jack Sutherford's autobiography, "Combating Inferiority"
Quote
"Jack Sutherford awoke from a dark slumber, to realize it was 6:45 am out. “Holey smokes!’ he thought, out loud. He had to hurry. For most folks, waking up at 6:45 on a weekday wasn’t reason to worry. They’d still have plenty of time to get ready and reach their boring, meaningless jobs on time or somewhat late but not too much so. Which, that didn’t matter anyway. But for Jack Sutherford, waking up at such a late time was nothing more than a major tragedy. For you see, Jack Sutherford wasn’t just any body, and his job was not just a boring, meaningless job. Jack Sutherford, standing there now, looking coolly out his window at the dawn rising over the sparkling dirty waters of Tranquility Bay, the filtered sunlight coming in and glinting off of the dark, chiseled visage of his hirsute naked chest, Jack Sutherford was something like a New American Hero. Jack Sutherford, you see, was a teacher; a teacher, through and through, and now, in the dawn’s early light, he quickly prepared himself for his daily task, his cross to bear so to speak, in fact that is a pretty apt metaphor, because, like Jesus before him, Jack went out each day, armed only with his wits and his hirsute, tanned and chiseled chest, and he COMBATED IGNORANCE."

Quote from: Jack Sutherford's "Book of Incredibly Erudite And Sexy Poetry By Me"
Quote
‘I love you,’ said the rain
Kissing the ground with her raindrop kisses
Embracing him with her dark, heavy, pendulous, sagging clouds
Caressing him here and there with her winds that she blew from her tiny mouth
Somewhere, a volcano was erupting with the force of a ten thousand megaton atom bomb. . . "
Shall we go, you and I, while we can,
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

I joined this crazy bus ride in the void of 05 after the Astros brought their rookie league team to Greeneville looking for some Astros minor league news.

I left Greeneville right before the Astros did but I am still hanging around here.

So true, Das.  It points to the uniqueness of this site and longevity, where baseball is loved and taught (I learn something almost every time I log in) and Astros fanatics thrive (and sometimes enjoy bantering w/ each other).  Glad you had this experience, Bench.  Thanks for sharing it.  For those of us that live in other time zones, this board is the closest thing to seeing other Astros fans face to face, much less enjoying a game together.

Thankful for OWA.  Hope registration is fixed or opened again, so more can experience this and this site can become more like Second Hand Lions rather than Edge of Darkness.  The last exchange at the end of the clip highlights the future of OWA with a closed registration: "No one is left to bury you."

Well, even though I don't comment very often, I am still here.

Same. I wander in and out and think about the salad days of 100 loss years and franchise type players traded away in their near prime and think, "Where does the time go?" Then I realize that I'm really old now.

I don't remember what year it was I joined this band of merry misfits, but it was the days of the BFT. My loathing for HD ran deep, and many were the days that I wished to punch him in his face until he peed himself. Then I realized that I didn't really have anything to offer most conversations (I may have killed more threads than anyone in history), so now I mainly just lurk. The last post I remember making was WS game 7, but I may have something since then. No idea for sure though.
