Because he's Lance Berkman, apparently.  Coaching HS was beneath him but was a resume-building necessity.

Got him on high cheese and again on a breaking ball in the dirt.  He looked confused.  But it's been two at bats.

B5:

Bregman...3-0...3-1...singles up the middle
Brantley...0-2...triples off the LCF wall, Bregman scores

That'll do it for Peralta, Albers in

Gurriel singles to CF, Brantley scores

Gurriel steals 2B

Alvarez homers to RF, Gurriel scores
Chirinos strikes out swinging
Kemp...0-2...1-2...flies out F8
White...full up...walks
Marisnick grounds out 5-3

8-3 Astros

Berkman has definitely been better the last few inning, now that he is actually talking about.....the actual game.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Boston sucks.

The replay is great.  The RF goes crashing into the stupid wall behind the Pesky Pole and just hangs there thinking it's a home run while the ball hits off the wall and rolls about 20 feet away.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Lance Berkman treated his gig as a color commentator on the television broadcast very much like he used to participate in the radio talk show. Two very different formats but to "Twinkie" Berkman, it was all the same. When he would appear as a guest on Sports Talk Radio in Houston, his candor and storytelling were exactly how he performed last night on the broadcast of the game. Those of us who remember his appearances on Sports Talk Radio (and how they would just wind him up and let him go) knew he speaks with plenty of candor, holds nothing back in terms of his opinions, and usually doesn't mind speaking directly about someone or something. He did that last night when he talked about Biggio, Oswalt, Doug Eddings (the Home Plate Umpire), the NL Central cities (road trips he hated because the downtowns in those cities were ugly), Chicago Cub fans and his gig at Second Baptist. I can bet you that he'll bring along other stories and opinions tonight as well, some of which are pointed right at others he has deep opinions about, like managers and owners. But he tries to balance that out with his remarks about himself and usually, it's not about flattering himself either. So he thinks if he can be self-effacing, he can also be critical of others.

I enjoyed Lance last night. It is good to sometimes have different perspectives from your color man. If he is serious about doing this much in the future he needs to learn that less is often more from color people.

At lunch today, Berkman was described as a religious man doing good when it is for his benefit.  Berkman appears to be doing the same as with his post-mlb career.

And I, personally, thought he was eh.  Not impressed but not offended either.  I might care more if I heard him every night.

I never liked Berkman as a player and I especially disliked all the Berkman stans of which there was no lack, but I will happily admit that I enjoyed him last night and look forward to tonight. He's not a color guy (unless white's a color); he's a story teller, which is just fine for a couple of games.

Lance is all about Lance. Not much thought for the kids he was coaching. I think most educators would note that they really enjoyed working with the kids and found it fulfilling, but Lance was more concerned with what the job would do for him and not the other way around, which sucks when you're talking about children.

I enjoyed hearing his anecdotes last night. He's an amusing guy. But that quote was pretty hollow.

I don't know Berkman aside from enjoying him as an Astro.  Enjoyed his stories during the game, but didn't care about his stats.
Last night, did he say that he quit the coaching job once his daughter graduated?  Was she attending 2nd Baptist?
If so, could that point to a more personal reason for taking the job?

Did you read his statements on it?  He said flat out that he really didn't like coaching HS, he was only doing to build a resume to try to get the Rice job, and when he didn't, he had no desire to continue.  He's made no secret about why he took the job and why he left it.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I did read it.

In "Karate Kid", Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel-son, "Not everything is as it seems" (1:04)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K24jL-06H0&ab_channel=ArmanRousta

People are complicated, often having more than one reason for doing what they do - some they themselves are not aware of or won't/can't admit.  Kids and schools have changed, mostly for the worse.  I once thot a SRO (School Resource Officer) was a cush job, but no more.  Same w/ teaching or coaching.  All it takes is one or two undisciplined kids to make it very hard to manage a classroom - or team.

Someone else mentioned how much a stretch it would be to think a few years of hs managing would qualify him for the Rice job.  It seemed odd that he mentioned quitting in the same sentence with the timing of his daughter graduation.

Don't know.  I may well be off base.

Baseball took close to half of 16 years; don't know how many years she missed her Dad.

Just a thot.

Well, if you don’t believe Berkman himself, I’m not sure why you’d believe anyone else about it.

 Carry on.

I believe what he said.

Bergman is a motor mouth.

I couldn't figure out why you were dissing Bregman, but then I realized it took some of us a long time to get used to Bregman and now I see the effects in a Bergman (instead of Berkman).

Berkman, not any form of Bregman, is the motor mouth. He thought the booth was his personal stage.

I think she was saying that "Bergman" as a common mistyping used to automatically be interpreted as Berkman but now is automatically interpreted as Bregman.

I hope you're doing well and that you get through whatever it is that's got you down.

It was no jab.  and I hope you are better soon.  And I agreed with you.
