NCAA Div. I Baseball Tournament
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:22:58 pm »
The field of 64 is set. The Big XII is well represented with five of the league's nine teams making the field: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia are all regional hosts and Baylor and TCU are regional #2 and #3 seeds respectively.

UCLA is the overall #1 and will have Baylor along with LMU and Omaha in their regional with only Baylor likely to put up much fight. Texas Tech is the overall #8 with Army, Florida, and Dallas Baptist in their Regional to be played in Lubbock. Oklahoma State is the overall #9 and has Harvard, Nebraska, and U Conn. in their regional in Stillwater. Arkansas is an overall #5 seed and has Cal, Central Conn. State, and TCU in their regional in Fayetteville. Finally for the Big XII, West Virginia hosts a regional for the first time. The Mountaineers are a #15 overall seed and have Fordham, Duke, and Texas A&M in their regional in Morgantown.

There are 16 overall seeds each hosting a regional. The first eight overall seeds will host a super-regional if they win their regional.

There are too many SEC teams for my taste and I'm not happy about Texas Tech and Oklahoma State being paired in the same super-regional assuring only one can possibly get into the College World Series. Nevertheless, it is a great field and promises to be some of the most entertaining baseball to be seen all year.

Based on what I saw during the SEC tourney.  Someone is going to have to be really really good to beat Vandy.

Having seen many of those games, including all of Vandy's wins, you're spot on. Their lineup is relentless.

Conference fandom is one of the strangest things about college sports. You'll see plenty of trucks sporting around with an "SEC" sticker but I simply can't bring myself to root for the AL West on pure principle.

In a conference setting, unlike pro baseball, every school doesn't play every other team in most sports. I bet that you pulled for the National League in the ASG and in the World Series when the Astros were in the NL.

There's a lot of grousing over that. BYU has a legitimate gripe, but nobody really wants to deal with their inability to play on Sunday so they kind of got screwed and Texas State (I still think of them as SWTSU) doesn't have the recent history that TCU has. I'm also not sure why TCU is a #3 and not a #4 regional seed.

It looks like the Oklahoma State regional will be played in Oklahoma City rather than Stillwater due to flooding.

I like the Big XII for baseball and basketball because as a small league, everybody plays everybody. I'm pulling for my alma mater, Texas Tech, but West Virginia is my sleeper pick for the CWS. They have great starting pitching and defense and are currently playing their best baseball of the year.

Not really. In the all star games I'd root for the players I like to do well, and for the team with the Astro(s) on it to win. In the world series it's always team specific. I damn sure never cheered for the braves in the 90s.

I was listening to the Auburn Vandy game in the SEC tourney and the Auburn play by play guy (may he rest in peace) was already talking about who Auburn would face in the losers bracket in the 2nd inning!  Everyone knew who was going to win that game.

Day one is in the books and the story is the dominance of #3 seeds. Number 3 seeds play number 2 seeds in the first round of the regionals. With two close seeds playing in 16 games, one should expect some upsets, perhaps as many as six or seven; but, this year we had at least twelve #3s beating #2s with one rain-delayed game completing tomorrow morning. Oregon State is the only #1 seed to be upset as the defending National Champs were beaten by #4 Cincinnati 7-6.

Big XII went 3-1 today with #2 Baylor being the only one sent to the loser's bracket as they were defeated by #3 Loyola Marymount 3-1. #1 Texas Tech beat #4 Army 11-2, #3 TCU beat #2 Cal 13-2, and #1 WVU beat #4 Fordham 6-2.

Tomorrow, Baylor plays an elimination game against Omaha. Texas Tech plays Dallas Baptist, TCU plays Arkansas, and West Virginia plays Duke in winner's bracket games. Sixteen teams go home tomorrow as the field will narrow to 48 teams.

The Big XII went 3-2 today:

Baylor released the kraken, and the hounds, and the bears, and the bats, and the cats, and the elephants, and everything. They released everything on poor lil' Omaha 24-6, leaving the Mavericks to journey home without a solitary hap. Baylor will, improbably, play #1 overall seed UCLA tomorrow morning in another elimination game with the winner playing LMU.

The Red Raiders slipped by a very good Dallas Baptist team 3-1. They will play the winner of the Dallas Baptist vs. Florida game tomorrow.

TCU lost to Arkansas 3-1 in a hard-fought game. The Frogs will play Central Connecticut tomorrow for the chance to play Arkansas again.

The West Virginia Mountaineers stumbled against Duke 4-0. WVU couldn't overcome early controversy to get to Duke pitching. They will play Texas A&M tomorrow morning for another chance at the Blue Devils.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys came from behind with four runs in the ninth to beat Nebraska 6-5. They will play the winner of the U. Conn vs Nebraska game tomorrow.

The Red Raiders and Cowboys are headed for a super-regional battle royal if they can each win one more. The rest of the Big XII will have to slog it out through the loser's bracket to get to the supers.

This is turning into a great tournament, as good as March madness with the upsets.  Gotta love the Campbell Fighting Camels and the Quinnepiac Bobcats facing off in the winners bracket while NC State is eliminated and #1 seed East Carolina has to come out of the losers bracket and beat the winner twice.

And a two out, three run walk off bomb by the kid who made a big error earlier in the game and last year had a ball pop out of his glove to give FLA a walk off in the super regional is better than any three pointer at the buzzer.
Always ready to go to a game.

It's Whack Sunday at the Tournament. Every game except one that will be played today will be an elimination game for at least one team.

First, a correction: Texas Tech beat Dallas Baptist 3-2 yesterday. BTW DBU just took a 3-2 lead against Florida in the top of the fourth.

UConn is crushing Nebraska. The 'Huskers had their hearts ripped out by Oklahoma State last night and have none for the game today. UConn now leads 16-1 and they are still batting in the ninth.

UConn completed their rout of Nebraska and will rest up for their game with Oklahoma State later. It will be an elimination game for the Huskies.

Dallas Baptist are feasting on crappy Gator pitching and are still in the top of the fourth now with a 9-2 lead.

Elsewhere: West Virginia leads Texas A&M 7-1 in the top of the 7th in an elimination game for both teams.

UCLA leads Baylor 6-4 in the top of the 5th. TCU leads Central Connecticut State 4-3 in the top of the 4th

So Texas A&M walks it off against West Virginia with a grand slam. Final TAMU 11, WVU 10.

Dallas Baptist scores nine runs in the fourth inning and holds on against Florida 9-8.

TCU beats Cent. Conn. State 9-5 and Baylor loses to UCLA 11-6.

Games now underway:
Texas Tech 3, DBU 0 in the top of the fifth.
U Conn leads Oklahoma State 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
Duke leads Texas A&M 4-1 in the bottom of the third.

The Red Raiders of Texas Tech have shutout the Dallas Baptist Patriots 3-0. A Cam Warren three run jack in the first was all the offense. Tech will wait to see who comes to town for the Super-Regional best two out of three series. The winner of tomorrow's UConn vs OSU game in OKC will come to Lubbock.

After Sunday's games, ten of the sixteen regional championships have been decided:

Texas Tech swept the Lubbock regional 3-0. The Red Raiders will host either Oklahoma State or UConn in the super-regional. Those two play a decisive game Monday in OKC.

Arkansas won their regional and will host Ole Miss who won their regional. This will be an all SEC super-regional in a battle of national seeds: #5 Arkansas and #12 Ole Miss.

Overall #13 seed LSU won their regional and will host Florida State who was the upset winner as a regional #3 seed.

Overall #2 seed Vanderbilt swept their regional as expected and will play the surprise winner of the Morgantown regional, Duke.

#6 overall seed Mississippi State won their regional and will host the winner of the Stanford vs Fresno State game tomorrow.

North Carolina won their regional and will host Auburn, who defeated #3 overall seed Georgia Tech to win the Atlanta regional.

UCLA will play Loyola Marymount University tomorrow in a decisive game for the Los Angeles regional. The winner of this game will play the winner of Creighton vs. Michigan  tomorrow. As an overall #1 seed, UCLA will host the super-regional if they win.

Louisville will play Illinois State in a decisive game. East Carolina will continue their rain delayed regional with a game against the Campbell Camels. If East Carolina beats the Campbell Camels, they will play again in a decisive game. The winner between ECU and the Campbell Camels will play the winner of the Louisville vs Illinois State game.

Also: it's fun to say Campbell Camels really fast.

Illinois State put up quite a fight, but Louisville came back through the loser's bracket to win their regional. They will play the winner of the second game today between the East Carolina Pirates and the Campbell Camels. ECU won the first game 10-3 which forced the decisive game.

Congrats to my Tigers for being selected to host a super-regional against Florida State. I must admit to being somewhat ambivalent about playing Florida State, and their venerable head coach, Mike Martin. I had the opportunity to meet with Coach Martin when Florida State entertained the Tigers. He's been the Florida State Seminoles head baseball coach for approximately 45 years. Despite his long career, and a bevy of College World Series appearances, Coach Martin has never won a college world series. I'd really like to see him win one, even if it is at our expense, because he's one of the realaly good guys in college baseball.

Florida State destroyed a pretty good field in the regional. They do not look like a #3 regional seed. On paper, LSU should beat them. 'Course that's not where the game is played.

Once FSU destroyed #4 overall seed Georgia, LSU at a #13 was the only overall seed left in the pair of regionals, so they get the super-regional in Baton Rouge.

Oklahoma State defeats Creighton 3-1 and will travel to Lubbock to face Texas Tech in the super-regional. Unfortunately, the only two Big XII teams left in the tournament will face each other.

East Carolina leads the Campbell Camels 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth much to the consternation of the country's onomatopoets. The winner will travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals in the super-regional.

With UCLA's defeat of LMU and Stanford's win over Fresno State we have our last regional champs.

The seeding held out pretty well as 12 of the 16 national seeds won their regional. The twelve regional #1 seeds are joined by three #3 seeds and one #2. Here are the match-ups:

#1 UCLA hosts Michigan
#8 Texas Tech hosts #9 Oklahoma State
#5 Arkansas hosts #12 Ole Miss
#13 LSU hosts Florida State
#2 Vanderbilt hosts Duke
#7 Louisville hosts #10 East Carolina
#6 Mississippi State hosts #11 Stanford
#14 North Carolina hosts Auburn

Some great baseball coming up with the super-regionals June 7-10. The CWS will begin on June 15 in Omaha.

Duke crushes Vanderbilt 18-5.

Two HUGE upsets by #3s beating #1s. In this case, the overall national #1 and #2 seeds went down to game 1 defeats.

Both Vanderbilt and UCLA will play for their tournament lives Saturday along with ECU and OSU. Conversely, Louisville, Texas Tech, Michigan, and Duke will play to get to the Promised Land: Omaha, Nebraska.

A full eight games tomorrow as the other bracket gets active.

Arkansas beats Ole Miss 11-2. Razorbacks play for Omaha tomorrow.

Louisville pitcher Bobby Miller took a No-No into the ninth inning but gave up a base hit to the lead off hitter. Louisville still destroys ECU 12-0 and gets their ticket punched to Omaha.

Fun fact: LSU baseball averages 1000 more in attendance per game than the Miami Marlins.

Auburn upsets North Carolina 11-7.

Good game!
Astros #9 draft pick, Peyton Battenfield, had a rough 7th for Oklahoma St.  After getting one out, he gave up the tying HR and two singles b/f being relieved.  It was 3-3 when he left.

It is 5-5  in bottom of 9th.

Vanderbilt also avoided the abyss with a 3-0 victory over Duke. Mississippi State beat Stanford 6-2. T Cardinal will try to avoid elimination tomorrow. Arkansas beat Ole Miss 6-2 and Auburn beat North Carolina 11-7.

Watching Auburn leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the first against #14 overall seed North Carolina reminds me of a flaw in the tournament structure.

I think the tournament should be re-seeded after the regionals. That way a #14 N.C. or a #13 LSU doesn't get to host a super regional against an unranked opponent while a #9 Oklahoma State plays on the road. It seems if a top seed stumbles in the regional, then the much lower seed in the paired regional has an undeserved easy road to Omaha.

Texas Tech just defeated Oklahoma State 8-6 in a slobba-knocka game and get their ticket punched to Omaha.

I think home field was likely the difference in the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State series. The two teams are so closely matched and, as clearly the best two teams in the #2 RPI conference, should not (in my opinion) have been paired in the Super Regional.

Florida State is playing out of their heads but, I think need to win today or won't have enough to beat a better LSU team tomorrow. Still 4-4 in the bottom of 10.

He was pretty stoked after that victory, for obvious reasons.  They are playing very well too.  Pretty much dismantled Georgia and outlasted LSU.

I didn't see much of Louisville, but so far, FSU and Vandy look pretty strong.  I think the piggies are pretty good also (if they win today), but they have a way of blowing it.

North Carolina had a nightmare first inning as Auburn dropped a baker's dozen on them. The Tarheels held the Tigers to one run the rest of the way but it was too much hill to climb. Auburn wins 14-7 and advances to the CWS.

Meanwhile Arkansas rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the second to lead Ole Miss  4-1.

Brackets are:
Vandy v Louisville
Auburn v Miss St

Other side is (not sure who is playing who yet)
Texas Tech, Fla St, Michigan, Arkansas.

I hope my Tigers do well but am seeing a Vandy Ark final

They're going to have a lot of newbie fans in Omaha this year. Congratulations to Michigan, Texas Tech and Louisville for getting in for the first time or in a long time. Note that half of the field again is from the SEC (Superior Effing Conference).
This is Texas Tech's fourth visit to the CWS in six years. They were there last year.

SEC gorvelling is now rampant in all college sports.

Texas Tech is now the National Champion in men's Track & Field and Virginia (ACC) barely beat the Red Raiders in the basketball championship. The SEC is overwhelming other conferences with sheer numbers, but with some pretty good baseball and basketball programs, and a few good football teams, the tiny, ten team (nine for baseball) Big XII does alright.

Michigan defeats Texas Tech 5-3. Tech will play the loser of the Arkansas vs Florida State game in an elimination game on Monday and Michigan will play the winner of the Arkansas vs FSU game.

Oooooof! Losing the first game in one of the double elimination tournaments is poison...survivable, but only just.

I sometimes wonder if loser of the winner's bracket game isn't worse off, just because he winds up in the same situation as the winner of the loser's bracket game but on a more compressed schedule. I suppose the winner's bracket guy may have been less profligate with his pitching staff, which gives him a bit of an advantage.

His day went from awesome to awful in just a few innings.  Hit a absolute two run bomb off one of the best pitchers in college ball and then tack on another run with a RBI single.  Then botch a tailor made double play ball by going to second instead of first after touching 3rd and throwing it into right field.  Then the overthrow on what should have been the final out. Poor kid.

While I agree with all that, I put a lot of blame on that pitcher walking a batter with a three run lead and putting the tying run at the plate.   Also, why is he throwing all fastballs.  It took more than one player, and a bit of misfortune for that to happen.

Yes, my son and I were also questioning several of the coaches decisions.  I thought he was managing too tight/playing not to lose rather than playing to win.  For example, I would have left Fitts in after the double instead of going to burns.  Still had a 3 run lead and Fitts had been getting outs.  Didn't know what you were going to get from Burns.

Texas Tech defeats Arkansas 5-4. Tech came back from a 0-3 deficit and barely closed to door in the ninth. Cameron Warren hit a two run shot to Lincoln and Josh Jung went oppo. Arkansas is eliminated.

On Wednesday the Red Raiders will play the loser of this evening's Florida State vs Michigan game.

I watched the game as a Seminole fan solely because of No. 11. 17 trips to the CWS and no titles. Believe me, it takes more than just talent to win the CWS. I wish Coach Martin well in retirement. He was one of the best coaches and role models in college baseball. He'll be missed.

Louisville walks it off in the ninth 4-3. Mississippi State is eliminated,

Now, the "Final Four" of baseball are:
Texas Tech (Big XII) 2-1
Michigan (Big 10) 2-0
Vanderbilt (SEC) 2-0
Louisville (ACC) 2-1

A great representation of conferences and four fine baseball teams. Tomorrow's games are:
Texas Tech vs Michigan at 1:00 PM CDT. This is an elimination game for Tech.
Louisville vs Vanderbilt at 6:00 PM CDT. This is an elimination game for Louisville.

If either Texas Tech or Louisville win their game, they will repeat the same match-up on Saturday.

The Tech program is so far beyond the program I saw forty years ago that it's a completely different thing. The field then was about high school caliber and one just walked up to watch a game. The players practiced on hard pan dirt in 25 degree weather and 30 MPH wind in down jackets.

Rip Griffin donated a bunch of money and got the Red Raiders a real stadium and some other facilities, like indoor practice capability for harsh Lubbock winters. Then Kirby Holcutt was hired as A.D. and he hired Tim Tadlock who turned the program from an also-ran into a power.

Tadlock is a master of player development, which is what's needed to pull a program up from the bottom. Now, with the Red Raider's success, Tech is starting to see better recruiting which will hopefully keep us in the mix for Omaha for some time to come.

With men's T&F natty, men's basketball national runner-up, baseball, and Tech's continuing national dominance of meat judging, it's a golden age of Texas Tech sports......well, except for football.

Tech pitchers can't find the plate with a GPS and a guide. McMillan walks the bases loaded with two outs then gives up the two run blooper. On offense Tech has a few bloopers of their own but have left a number roughly equal to the population of Council Bluffs, Iowa on base.

After three innings: Michigan 6, Texas Tech 3.

This year's CWS's only blowout so far belongs to the Michigan Wolverines who destroyed my beloved Red Raiders 15-3. Tech played their worst game of the year against a good team and got stomped. I can't believe that Michigan almost didn't make the tournament.

So the championship series will be one favorite: Vanderbilt, and one Cinderella: Michigan.

Just a personal note. I grew up in Lubbock and both of my parents were Tech grads and heavy supporters, so I know all about Rip Griffin and that history. But to me, Tech baseball will always have a black mark as long as they play at Dan Law Field.

Dan Law was my first baseball coach when I was 7. He was such an asshole and slavedriver (to 7 year olds!) that he turned off both me and my parents to organized sports from that point forward. He'd yell and scream and berate little kids. He demanded that the team parents pay for and build new facilities at a church, then didn't like it and never used it. I realize he donated a lot of money and material to Tech. Big deal. He ruined organized baseball for me and a lot of other kids. In my mind, any place that carries his name has a black mark. Especially a baseball field.

The Texas Tech story is very similar to the LSU story. Before Skip Bertman became the coach, LSU baseball was really nothing. They sold tickets to the games, but the only people in the stands were our friends, girl friends, relatives, etc. The year before Skip arrived, LSU sold three season tickets. Three. There weren't dressing facilities for visiting teams. The coach's office was in the basketball arena. The coach my freshman year doubled as a football equipment manager.
Now they draw 10,000 or more for midweek games against primarily in-state schools.

If I hadn't been there from the beginning of the Skip Bertman era, andif you'd have told me back in 1982 (my senior year) that LSU would eventually have a major college baseball program that would win six CWS championships, I'd have laughed out loud and asked for some of what you were smoking. The bottom line is that great coaches like Skip and Coach Tadlock can buck the odds and build a perennial winner at any school. It takes vision and a whole lot of elbow grease.

Michigan continues to vex the seeds as they just hit a two run dinger and extend their lead to 6-3 over Vanderbilt with no outs in the top of the seventh.

After the second CWS appearance there was a lot of talk about Tadlock going to Austin. The gist of it being: "If U.T. wants him, they'll get him. He won't be able to turn them down." When asked about that by media he said words to the effect: "My family and I are Red Raiders and that's all I'll ever say about that." I don't think Tadlock ever buys a beer in Lubbock.

Michigan defeats Vanderbilt 7-4.
Cinderella hell, Cinderzilla!

Early this year Tech crushed Michigan in a three game sweep. I totally underestimated them and the Big 10. They were one of the last teams into the field of 64 and now they're one game away from sweeping the CWS.

Michigan's improbable run ends one game short.

Vanderbilt wins 8-2 and are the national champions.

Congratulations to the Vanderbilt Commodores: 2019 NCAA D1 Champions!

I had hoped for a more dramatic game, but oh well.  Two shitty games last night.

And Texifornia, thanks for the thread and your enthusiasm over this tourney.  It is an event I look forward to and the updates and info were much appreciated.  I just need Texas to make it again so I can motivate myself to get up there.

You are most welcome. I've really come to appreciate how the college game has developed over the last few decades. The D1 Tournament and CWS is great sports entertainment.

Nobody expects the Longhorns to spend another year in the cellar, the Big XII will be a dogfight. We may see as many as seven Big XII teams in the tournament next year.

When the Lubbock TV stations did investigative series on overly competitive coaches and parents in kid sports, they used Dan Law as the model.

I realize he donated a lot of money and material to Tech. Big deal. He ruined organized baseball for me and a lot of other kids. In my mind, any place that carries his name has a black mark. Especially a baseball field.
Dan Law died today:

I don't know if he ever repented. I do know that Tim Tadlock runs a positive program.
