Six months and counting...

As it stands today (and this will change slightly depending on FA signings), the Astros will pick at:

#32 (1st round)
#69 (2nd round)
#80 (comp pick for Keuchel)
#111 (3rd round)
#143 (4th round)

MLB Pipeline came out with their first Top 50 Draft Prospect list. Some of the more interesting (including local guys) names who might be available when the Astros pick at #32:

LHP Nick Lodolo/Junior--the 6'6" Horned Frog likely gets picked quickly if he steps up his game this spring.
OF Jerrion Ealy/HSer--Ole Miss commit who also plays football which of course affects signability.
SS Braden Shewmake/Junior--the 6'4" Aggie and lefty swinger might not stick at shortstop.
OF JJ Bleday/Junior--another lefty swinger, the Vandy player has the arm for RF.
1B Michael Busch/Junior--yet another lefty. Luhnow likes his Tarheels but might like this one more if he could play 2B or LF (which may be a possibility).
OF Matt Wallner/Junior--lefty hitter with arm for RF who currently patrols CF for Southern Miss.
OF Maurice Hampton/HSer--LSU commit who like Ealy has the football card to play.
SS Will Wilson/Junior--the NC Stater might have to shift to 2B.
SS Logan Davidon/Junior--the Clemson switch-hitter is likely to stick at SS. Wood bat struggles in the Cape though.
RHP Tyler Dyson/Junior--FB touching upper 90s but command/control and developing 3rd pitch needed.

Not a local JUCO name, but Carter Stewart is also someone interesting to watch. Braves took him with the eighth overall pick last year. However, he never signed and is pitching for Eastern Florida State College this season.

Not particularly draft-related but seems as good a place as any to drop this:

Of 297 Division I teams, 37 have TrackMan installed at their home ballpark. Of those 37 teams, 28 belong to Power 5 conferences. Not all of those teams are created equal. Some have gained reputations among the coaching community for using the technology in effective ways; others are still scratching the surface; and still others keep their strategies close to the vest. At UNC, [their] analytics department have found hundreds of ways to manipulate TrackMan and play-by-play data, arming the Tar Heel coaches and players with binders of charts, graphics, advanced stats and concepts that might not feel intuitive to a baseball purist. Daley-Harris and his team use coding language, like Python, to evaluate huge collections of data points at once and display them in accessible, appealing fashion.

“I think a lot of credit has to start with [Head] Coach [Mike] Fox, because there are coaches all over the country who want to do more of this stuff, but their head coaches are old school and they’re just not comfortable,” said Kyle Boddy, the founder of the data-driven Driveline Baseball program and one of the game’s most innovative thinkers. “I want to stress how rare that is that someone with so much history in the game—any game really—with that kind of pedigree is willing to make the changes he did. The credit starts at the top. It’s amazing the progress they’ve made there in a year and a half,” Boddy said. “When I went there and [they] showed me [their] spray charts and everything he had for guys, I was shocked. I was like, ‘Dude, this is better than 25 pro teams.’ I mean, you’re chasing down the Astros and a few other teams maybe. They’re leagues ahead of anybody else. I could tell you. I know all the teams that are doing analytics. It’s not even close. It’s a joke. There’s not even a 1B or a 1C. Realistically, there’s not even a No. 2.”

Article was written over 9 months ago so additional schools undoubtedly have adopted TrackMan since then. But Tar Heel players working extensively with this data while in school may give Luhnow another reason to favor Tar Heel players.

BIG 12 Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

C Shea Langeliers, Baylor
Listed at 6’0” 190 lbs. Going into the spring the Keller HS grad is considered a Top 10 pick.

3B Davis Wendzel, Baylor
Listed at 6’0” 205 lbs. .310/.435/.532 for the Bears in 2018 (almost exactly the same numbers as his freshman year) followed by a somewhat disappointing .236/.346/.385 summer in the Cape.

LHP Cody Bradford, Baylor
Listed at 6’3” 195 lbs. The Aledo HS valedictorian had a terrific soph season for the Bears in 2018 as he led the conference in ERA while whiffing 87 and walking 26 in 97 IP. He also tied some team records originally set by future MLBers Jason Jennings and Shawn Tolleson. He then made two starts in the Cape over the summer, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits over 8 innings.

3B Josh Jung, TT
Listed at 6’2” 215 lbs. Like Langeliers, the San Antonio native is generally considered a Top 10 pick currently.

2B/OF Gabe Holt, TT
Listed at 5’10” 170 lbs. Draft-eligible soph who had a huge freshman season as Tech’s leadoff hitter, batting .348 and ranking 2nd in the conference in hits and SBs (11th and 18th nationally). 29 steals, caught just once. A 12% walk rate vs an 11% K rate. Hit .400 in the NCAA tourney followed by a .315 BA in the CCBL. Signability concerns and questions about his power might drop him down to later in the draft. Possible utility type at the next level after playing SS in high school and then 2B and RF for the Red Raiders.

RHP Caleb Kilian, TT
Listed at 6’4” 180 lbs. The former Flower Mound HSer is scheduled to be the Friday starter for the Red Raiders this spring. As a draft-eligible soph, was taken by the Orioles in the 20th round this past June.

RHP John McMillon, TT
Listed at 6’3” 230 lbs. Scheduled to follow Kilian in the rotation as the Saturday starter. Has been a two way player his first couple of seasons for the Red Raiders. The kid from Jasper was a 21st round pick of the Rays out of high school in 2016.

RHP Caleb Freeman, TT
Listed at 6’3” 205 lbs. The Abilene Cooper grad has been used almost exclusively out of the pen for the Red Raiders. Walks have been an issue with 33 free passes in 50 IP for Tech and another 10 BBs in 18 innings this past summer in the Cape.

1B Cameron Warren, TT
A senior so more likely taken in rounds 6-10. Older guy who turns 24 shortly after draft day. Large dude at a listed 6’3” 230 lbs. Drafted in 39th round in 2014 by the Yankees but not selected last year despite hitting .326/.444/.549 for the Red Raiders with 34 walks vs 30 strikeouts.

2B Brian Klein, TT
Listed at 5’11” 190 lbs. Tremendous improvement from his freshman campaign resulted in a .317/.422/.480 year for the Red Raiders in 2018 with a 15.9% walk rate versus 14.7% K rate. Continued to hit over the summer by putting up a .317/.396/.427 line in the California Collegiate League. Lefty hitter.

LHP Nick Lodolo, TCU
Listed at 6'6" 180 lbs. The Horned Frog likely gets picked quickly if he steps up his game this spring after some inconsistency his first two years. A 1st round supplemental pick of the Pirates in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Alek Manoah, WVU
Listed at a husky 6’6” 260 lbs. Can run the FB up to 98. Not being able to find the plate resulted in working mostly out of the bullpen his first two years for the Mountaineers but turned heads this past summer with outstanding results in the starting rotation in the Cape. 48 Ks vs 11 BBs in 33 IP for Chatham with just 15 hits allowed and consequently BA ranked him as the #4 prospect in the CCBL.

C Chase Illig, WVU
Listed at 6’0” 210 lbs. Not drafted after HS in 2015 nor as a RS soph last year for West Virginia. Bat has been very weak for the Mountaineers but summer play has been a different story including a .363/.474/.699 line this past year in the California Collegiate League (garnering a #7 prospect ranking in that league by BA). Good defender says BA. Switch-hitter.

RHP Ryan Zeferjahn, KU
Listed at 6’4” 216 lbs. The stuff is there, the control not so much. Upper 90s FB along with a good slider. 74 walks in 133 career innings for the Jayhawks and another 9 in 15 IP this past summer in the Cape (but also allowed just 5 hits while whiffing 20). 37th round pick of the Rays out of HS.

LHP Braidyn Fink, OU
Listed at 6’1” 215 lbs. Walks have been problematic for the Sooners reliever but showed improvement this past year with a combined 57 Ks vs 21 BBs in 44 innings between Norman and the Cape.

ZZ Bop (anyone else using that nickname?) has not shown up on any of the draft boards I've seen so far. But he had an amazing summer in the Northwoods League back in 2017 (.311/.455/.672, 57 BBs vs 51 Ks) and if he can approach anything close to that with the Horns this spring then he starts to look really interesting despite the lackluster 1B profile.

Mid-Major West Coast Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

BIG WEST

SS Christian Koss, UCI
Listed at 6’2” 185 lbs. Big defense, sucky offense with little hint of pop. Named 23rd-best prospect in the CCBL by BA despite hitting just .263/.323/.333. That came after a soph season for the Anteaters where he put up a .287/.343/.379 line.

RHP Andre Pallante, UCI
Listed at 6’0” 203 lbs. Terrific 2018 with 115 Ks vs 30 BBs in 101 innings for the Anteaters followed by a short but strong performance in the CCBL (15 IP, 9 H, 5 BB, 15 K). He also pitched in the summer for Team USA where the scouting report said his FB sat 91-94 (reaching 95 once) with a better CB than SL. The evaluator also noted the FB was particularly effective up in the zone though Pallante didn’t throw it there often.

3B Brandon Lewis, UCI
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. JUCO transfer who led the California Collegiate League in both BA and HRs while posting a low 12.3% K rate. He ended up being named MVP of the league while Baseball America rated him 6th-best CCL prospect. Has a chance to stick at third.

SS Sahid Valenzuela, CSF
Listed at 5’9” 165 lbs. Some reports say he’ll have to move to 2B in the pros. 2018 was not particularly kind at the plate for Sahid. He dropped to .272/.313/.358 for the Titans (down from .314/.366/.378 as a freshman) prior to a CCBL season where he hit .286/.342/.410. Evidently that was good enough for D1baseball.com to name him 14th-best middle infielder in the Cape.

OF Tommy Jew, UCSB
Listed at 6’1” 185 lbs. Good reviews on his CF defense. Leadoff hitter with much more speed than pop at present. .313/.387/.456 for the Gauchos last year followed by a .245/.315/.357 summer in the CCBL. He did hit .328/.394/.578 in the NECBL the summer before so he does have at least some wood bat success (albeit at a lower level of competition).

WEST COAST CONFERENCE

LHP Chris Murphy, USD
Listed at 6’1” 175 lbs. Walks have been a problem in his first 2 years for the Toreros with 72 in 150 innings. But there were 180 Ks over that span. BBs continued in Cape Cod this summer with 18 in 23 IP but the 34 punchouts reflect the FB touching 95 when he pitches out of the pen (sits in low 90s as a starter). Both his CB and CU have shown potential at times. D1baseball.com ranked him the 4th-best southpaw in the Cape at the end of the summer.

LHP Ken Waldichuk, St. Mary's
Listed at 6’4 230 lbs. 118 whiffs vs 21 walks in 92 IP for the Gaels in 2018. Moved on to the CCBL for the summer and did a fairly credible job there (20 Ks/7 BBs/18 hits/18.1 IP).

RHP Riley Ornido, San Francisco
Listed at 6’4” 185 lbs. Seldom-used as a freshman, he burst out in 2018 with 95 Ks vs 32 BBs in 98 innings with only 63 hits allowed (including just 2 longballs). Followed that up with a short but quality stint in the CCBL with 15 whiffs to 3 walks in 12 IP while being dinged for just 8 hits. Up to 93 on the FB. One of the younger players in the college draft class.

RHP Alek Jacob, Gonzaga
Listed at 6’1” 175 lbs. Yes, he’s a sidearmer. No, he doesn’t throw hard (or at least he didn’t coming out of HS 2 years ago). Probably not a recipe for great success at the next level but...he had a helluva impressive freshman debut for the Zags in 2018 with 95 Ks in 103 innings with a WHIP of 0.99. And apparently he’s a draft-eligible soph. So it’ll be an interesting spring to see how he follows up that freshman campaign.

RHP Casey Legumina, Gonzaga
Listed at 6’2” 195 lbs. Moved from a starter role into the bullpen in 2018 as the Zags’ closer and was immediately successful as he led the West Coast Conference in saves and notched 52 punchouts in 48 IP with just 7 walks. He also made a pair of starts in the CCBL over the summer, allowing no ER in 9 frames w/9 Ks and just 1 BB. FB touching 95 and a decent slider. Drafted in the 25th round in 2016 out of HS and in the 35th round last year as a draft eligible soph. Any further spike in velo this spring might push him up into Day 2 territory. Dad was a minor league pitcher in the Dodgers and Tigers orgs back in the 80’s.

MOUNTAIN WEST

SS Bryson Stott, UNLV
Listed at 6’3” 195 lbs. A likely 1st round pick say the experts who also believe he’ll probably stick at short in the pros. Hit .365/.442/.556 for the Rebels in 2018 with a walk rate of 10.9% and a K rate of just 6.1%. Played for Team USA in the summer after a brief stint in the CCBL (.275/.383/.325) where he didn’t impress anybody with his lack of pop.

WAC

OF Quin Cotton, Grand Canyon
Listed at 5’11” 200 lbs. His numbers out west in 2018 were predictably bubbly (.390/.462/.573) and fell back to earth when he headed east to spend the summer in the Cape (.286/.344/.367). D1baseball.com did however rate him the 11th-best corner outfielder in the CCBL. Folks say he doesn’t have the arm for right so putting even more pressure on him to produce offensively. Rockies drafted him in the 38th round in 2016 out of HS.

Mid-Major Southeast Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

BIG SOUTH

RHP Seth Johnson, Campbell
Listed at 6’1” 200 lbs. A popup dude with little actual mound experience. He played at JUCO for his first two years where he mostly played the infield for Louisburg College. Did not get on the mound his freshman year and made just 5 appearances as a soph. Transferring to Campbell, in the fall he was throwing 92-95 with a pair of average breaking balls and was learning a change.

OF Matthew Barefoot, Campbell
Listed at 6’0” 205 lbs. Tore up the Big South in 2018 with a .364/.484/.585 line and was 6th in the nation in HBPs and was also 10th nationally in steals with 33 (caught just 5 times). To show his soph season for the Camels was no fluke (or beating up on subpar pitching), he then went on to wow folks in the Cape with a .379/.484/.521 line and was ranked by BA as the 47th-best prospect there. One evaluator suggested he might be limited to left due to the arm but I wonder given his speed if he has any chance of playing a halfway-decent CF. Given the Buies Creek Astros shared the Camels’ facilities and stadium the past two years, I’m guessing the Astros might have a lot more data and info on Barefoot than most other clubs. Not that it made any difference in 2018--as a RS soph he was eligible to be drafted.

RHP Zach Peek, Winthrop
Listed at 6’3” 185 lbs. His repertoire includes a FB sitting 91-95 and has touched 96. Reports say his CB had one of the highest spin rates for a soph in 2018. His CU is at least considered average. 99 Ks/24 BBs for the Eagles in 2018 in 89 innings. A bit rougher time in the CCBL with a 1.58 WHIP though he did have 27 punchouts in 26 IP.

SUN BELT

RHP Hunter Gaddis, Georgia State
Listed at 6’6” 212 lbs. FB up to 95 and both his breaking balls seem to be effective. Reports are his CU was really coming on in the fall giving him a more than decent 4 pitch arsenal. 29th-ranked prospect in the Cape by Baseball America. 98 Ks/24 BBs in 101 innings for the Panthers in 2018 followed by a summer with Chatham where he allowed just 11 hits and 4 walks in 18 IP while punching out 13.

LHP Anthony Veneziano, Coastal Carolina
Listed at 6’5” 205 lbs. The NJ kid looks to be the Chanticleers Saturday starter this spring. The stuff is there (a FB that can touch 95, a legit slider) but the control isn’t: 36 walks in 59 innings for the Chants in 2018 and another 8 in 14.2 IP for Cotuit in the CCBL.

1B Zach Biermann, Coastal Carolina
Listed at 6’3” 225 lbs. Two years at JUCO followed by his junior season with CC in 2018 in which he hit .302/.419/.561 followed by a .291/.359/.496 summer with Cotuit. Lefty hitter and as a senior probably is more likely to go in rounds 6-10. Missed fall workouts after breaking his hand on a HBP in the Cape.

2B Cory Wood, Coastal Carolina
Listed at 5’9” 180 lbs. The Chants’ leadoff hitter produced a .296/.435/.390 season in 2018 with a whopping 52 walks vs just 23 whiffs in 223 ABs. His summer with Cotuit wasn’t as good but he still had more walks than whiffs (27 vs 23). Could shoot up draft boards if he adds some pop this spring. Lefty hitter.

OF Todd Lott, ULL
Listed at 6’4” 235 lbs. 20th round pick of the Reds as a HSer in 2016 (would have gone higher but for a shoulder injury). Hasn’t really shown the promise he had coming out of high school with the Ragin’ Cajuns. A .266/.345/.344 freshman year was followed by a .246/.319/.462 soph year in 2018 in which he only played in 27 games. His wood bat summers have shown much more promise including most recently a .293/.333/.469 performance with Hyannis in the CCBL. Probably is limited to LF so the bat concerns ratchet up even more. Ex-NFL great Ronnie Lott is a cousin.

LHP Chandler Fidel, Arkansas-Little Rock
Listed at 6’5” 225 lbs. FB velocity nothing to write home about (tops out at 89) but does have a high spin rate slider. 92 Ks/21 BBs in 96 IP for the Trojans in 2018 before moving on to Yarmouth-Dennis in the Cape and punching out 27 in 18 innings there.

ATLANTIC SUN

LHP Mitchell Senger, Stetson
Listed at 6’7” 240 lbs. But no power arm here--he relies more on deception with a FB is in the upper 80s to low 90s. Dominated for the Hatters in 2018 (114 Ks in 93 IP against 28 walks and allowing just 66 hits) before spending the summer with Team USA and the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape. His CCBL experience wasn’t smooth but still rated a 36th-best prospect ranking by BA. Stetson alums include Corey Kluber and Jacob deGrom and the Hatters had 4 pitchers drafted last year including 1st rounder Logan Gilbert.

OF Tanner Murphy, North Florida
Listed at 6’4” 195 lbs. Pretty much led UNF in every offensive category in 2018 while batting .326/.418/.534. That slugging percentage led the ASUN. With the power comes 70-grade speed that he uses to patrol CF for the Ospreys.

Mid-Major Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

BIG EAST

RHP Ricky Devito, Seton Hall
Listed at 6’3” 185 lbs. Reportedly has a sinker that gets up to 94 (or 96 depending on the reports). CB and CU are both seen as quality pitches. 87 Ks/30 BBs in his first 2 years for the Pirates with just 48 hits allowed. Opened some eyes with a very good summer in the CCBL (35 whiffs in 29 IP) and was named by BA as the 16th best prospect there and by D1 as the 7th best righty in the league. The Staten Island native is one of the younger players in the college draft class.

OF Will Robertson, Creighton
Listed at 6’2” 215 lbs. Considered a possible 1st or 2nd round pick heading into the spring after a standout 2018 campaign where he hit .333/412/.641 for the Omaha school and then .300/.385/.435 in the Cape. Lefty swinger for the Bluejays may be limited to left says MLBP and BA.

2B Isaac Collins, Creighton
Listed at 5’10” 185 lbs. Supposed 70-grade speed but that hasn’t necessarily been fully realized on the basepaths. Hit .266/.381/.392 for the Bluejays in 2018 followed by a better .308/.381/.367 summer with Wareham in the CCBL. Presumably gets more respect on draft boards if the power decides to make an appearance this spring. The speed seems a bit wasted at 2B so also curious to see if the evaluators think a move to CF might occur as a pro. D1 rated him the 15th-best middle infielder in the Cape. Switch-hitter.

LHP Jeff Belge, St John's
Listed at 6’5” 225 lbs. FB can reach 94-95. Allegedly developed an improved CB in the fall. Control also an area of intense focus as he walked 59 in 102 innings last year between SJU and Chatham in the Cape (he whiffed 125 however). 32nd round selection of the Red Sox in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Gavin Hollowell, St John’s
Listed at 6’7” 215 lbs. Upper 90s FB. Used exclusively as a reliever (and will continue to do so this spring), he’s punched out 71 in 65 IP over his 1st two seasons while surrendering just 37 hits and walking 24. Roughed up somewhat this summer in the CCBL with a 1.77 WHIP in 19.2 innings. Missed fall workouts with a bone spur in his elbow.

RHP Sean Mooney, St John’s
Listed at 6’1” 185 lbs. The Friday starter for the Red Storm has been dominant in his 1st two seasons, being named both the Big East POTY and Freshman POTY in 2017 and was one of five finalists for national POTY in 2018 when he punched out 104 in 95 IP en route to a 1.07 WHIP. NJ native is a finesse guy relying on a 4-pitch arsenal (fastball-cutter-change-breaking ball). His FB ain’t so fast (87-90, occasionally hitting 92-93) but relies more on a high spin rate.

RHP Nick Morreale, Georgetown
Listed at 6’5” 220 lbs. Primarily used out of the bullpen the last two seasons. Struck out 59 in 48 IP for the Hoyas in 2018 but also walked 39. Moved on to Bourne in the Cape and notched 33 Ks in 22 innings (11 walks). FB up to 94 and inconsistent but promising CB and CU.

LHP Brent Killam, Georgetown
Listed at 5’11” 180 lbs. Impressive development by the southpaw who did not pitch in HS and was converted from the outfield to the mound as a freshman with the Hoyas. Understandably, he wasn’t used much out of the bullpen that year but there was a hint of things to come when he pitched in the Northwoods League as a closer that summer and K’d 42 in 24 IP with just 2 free passes allowed and racking up 9 saves. Moving into the rotation as a soph in 2018, he put up an outstanding 97/26 Ks to BBs in 82 frames (breaking the season strikeout record for Georgetown in the process) and followed that with a decent performance in the CCBL where he was used in relief to limit innings considering the massive expansion of his workload relative to 2017. FB is in the 89-92 range. His SL and CU have varying degrees of effectiveness with the former more advanced than the latter. An under the radar guy to keep an eye on this spring.

RHP Conor Grammes, Xavier
Listed at 6’1” 200 lbs. In addition to being the Musketeers’ 3B, was also used out of the bullpen for the Musketeers his first 2 seasons. He hit .330/.375/.517 in 2018 for the Cincy school (and .253/.302/.502 with 7 HRs in just 24 games in the Cape) and will again be a 2-way player this spring. His future however apparently lies on the mound and no wonder given a FB touching 99. Control and developing secondary pitches still on the agenda. 35th-rounder in 2018 as draft-eligible soph. 2-time state champion wrestler in HS.

RHP Ryan Pepiot, Butler
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. Rang up 101 Ks in just 75 innings in 2018 for the Bulldogs and followed that with a splash in the CCBL with another 33 Ks in 22 IP. Low 90s FB with above avg CB. This fall his fastball spin rate ranged from 2300-2500 rpm while his CB registered at 2800 rpm.

AMERICA EAST

OF Ashton Bardzell, Hartford
Listed at 6’2” 195 lbs. His 2018 junior season in Bagwell’s old stomping grounds was a quite respectable .308/.412/.532 though that was down from a .343/.457/.619 soph campaign. His recent .316/.415/.491 summer with Bourne in the Cape has brought him some scouting notice. One report described him as “a bit raw” but also athletic with above average power and the arm strength to play all 3 spots in the outfield. More likely a round 6-10 pick as a senior sign.

PATRIOT LEAGUE

RHP Levi Stoudt, Lehigh
Listed at 6’2” 195 lbs. FB occasionally touching 96, quality CU and a slider that still needs some work. 67 Ks in 65 IP for the Mountain Hawks in 2018 followed by a summer in Orleans where he struggled some in CCBL play but also whiffed 26 in 25 innings.

IVY LEAGUE

RHP Hunter Bigge, Harvard
Listed at 6’0” 205 lbs. A 2-way player for the Crimson as he plays 3B when not on the mound. He’ll move into the starting rotation this year after mostly pitching out of the pen his first 2 years. Sat 90-93 with the FB and touched 94 in the Northwoods League this past summer. K’d 52 and walked 18 in 51 innings while there and his slider was noted for being one of the best breaking balls in the circuit.

COLONIAL ATHLETIC

RHP George Kirby, Elon
Listed at 6’4” 201 lbs. FB sitting 94-96 and touching 97. CU his 2nd best pitch while breaking balls need work. Breakout season for the Phoenix in 2018 with 96 Ks in 90 IP. He was superb in the Cape with 24 punchouts and just 1 walk in 13 innings. 32nd rounder in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Kyle Brnovich, Elon
Listed at 6’2” 190 lbs. Another terrific pitcher for the Phoenix, was 4th in the nation in Ks in 2018 with 147 in 105 IP. Above average CU and can whip out “The Alien” which is considered one of the best sliders in the country. FB sits low 90s. Tossed 5 scoreless innings in the CCBL, allowing no hits and walking 2 while whiffing 6. Time there was short as he was also pitching for Team USA.

SS Greg Jones, UNCW
Listed at 6’2” 190 lbs. Draft-eligible soph who hit .278/.412/.370 as a freshman for the Seahawks in 2018. His summer in Chatham in the CCBL was solid if unspectacular (.259/.374/.353). 80-grade speed as demonstrated by going 36 for 43 in steals between Wilmington and the Cape (including a 20-3 mark with Chatham in just 37 games). Has added 3 inches and 20 lbs since HS so power may show shortly. May shift to CF in the pros. 17th rounder of the Orioles in 2017 out of HS. Switch-hitter.

LHP Sean Mellen, Northeastern
Listed at 6’5” 190 lbs. Low 90s FB, plus change. 81 Ks in 79 IP last year and just 49 hits allowed but walks high with 37.

ACC Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

LHP Graeme Stinson, Duke
Listed at 6’5” 250 lbs. Pretty much a consensus Top 10 pick heading into the spring.

LHP Adam Laskey, Duke
Listed at 6’3” 205 lbs. No plus pitches apparently and his first 2 seasons for the Blue Devils weren’t exactly amazing but he put things together this past summer in the CCBL and ended up being named the league’s outstanding pitcher. Giants’ 31st rounder in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Bryce Jarvis, Duke
Listed at 6’2” 185 lbs. Draft-eligible sophomore who used an outstanding CU en route to whiffing 67 in 47.2 IP in his freshman season last year while allowing just 23 hits and 22 walks. Son of ex-MLB pitcher Kevin who stuck for 12 years in the bigs.

SS Will Wilson, NC State
Listed at 6’0” 175 lbs. .307/.376/.588 as a soph in 2018 with 15 HRs (including 10 in ACC play). The Wolfpacker might have to shift to 2B in the pros say the experts.

RHP Dalton Feeney, NC State
Listed at 6’3” 224 lbs. The RS soph was up to 97 on FB as a freshman in 2017 before undergoing TJS and missing all of 2018. Will shoot up draft boards this spring if he shows he’s all the way back. Having grown up in Bismarck, ND and with only 21 innings of college work under his belt, may still be fairly raw. And with two years of college eligibility remaining after this season, signability may be an issue. Drafted out of HS in the 40th round in 2016 by the Tigers.

LHP Kent Klyman, NC State
Listed at 6’7” 235 lbs. K’d 67 in 61.2 IP last year working out of the pen. FB can get up to 93 at times, good SL and developing CU.

1B/OF Michael Busch, UNC
Listed at 6’0” 207 lbs. The lefty hitter has a terrific 2018 season for NC (.317/.465/.521 with 55 BBs vs 30 Ks) and in the Cape (.322/.450/.567). Luhnow likes his Tar Heels but might like this one more if he could play 2B or LF (which may be a possibility).

RHP Austin Bergner, UNC
Listed at 6’4” 195 lbs. He’s been inconsistent for the Heels but has been a stud the past 2 summers in the Cape with 56 Ks vs 18 BBs in 54 frames. Taken in last year’s draft as a draft eligible soph in the 32nd round and was taken in the 38th round in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Luca Dalatri, UNC
Listed at 6’6” 240 lbs. Missed nearly 2 months last spring with a stress reaction in his elbow (precursor to a stress fracture). 40th rounder in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Tyler Baum, UNC
Listed at 6’2” 175 lbs. Similar to Bergner, his performance for UNC has been up and down but his CCBL work in the summer has been outstanding with 53 whiffs vs 12 walks in 55 innings. Lotsa spin on the curveball.

C Brandon Martorano, UNC
Listed at 6’2” 160 lbs. .246/.375/.491 in 2018 for the Heels followed by a .241/.302/.431 summer in the Cape. 30th round pick out of HS in 2016. Reports from back then said he had the tools to stick behind the plate but also the athleticism to play other positions.

INF/OF Ashton McGee, UNC
Listed at 6’1” 200 lbs. Lefty hitter. Has some tools but the bat has cratered after a .327/.417/.484 freshman season. Just .257/.367/.366 in 2018 and a sickly combined .140/.246/.167 over 2 summers in the CCBL. Primarily a DH in 2017 before manning LF last year.

SS Ike Freeman, UNC
Listed at 5’10” 183 lbs. .305/.383/.377 for NC last spring followed by a .250/.329/.397 summer in the Cape.

1B Logan Wyatt, Louisville
Listed at 6’4” 230 lbs. Lefty hitter for the Cardinals. Great eye at plate with lotsa power. Huge step forward last season going .339/.490/.522 with a 21% walk rate vs a 12% K rate followed by a .305/.458/.438 line in the CCBL. Probably limited to 1B say the experts so the bat has to carry.

LHP Nick Bennett, Louisville
Listed at 6’4” 210 lbs. 133 Ks vs 40 BBs over 138 IP in his first two years with just 113 hits allowed. Mid to high 90s FB. No wood bat track record as he’s spent the last 2 summers either rehabbing or doing conditioning work. 40th round pick of the Giants out of HS.

RHP Bryan Hoeing, Louisville
Listed at 6’6” 225 lbs. Cape hitters tuned him up this past summer as he gave up 43 hits in 28 IP. Taken in the 36th round of last year’s draft as a RS sophomore and in the 32nd round in 2015 out of HS. Cousin is Angels’ pitcher Alex Meyer.

SS Tyler Fitzgerald, Louisville
Listed at 6’3” 205 lbs. Anemic but improving bat with an OPS of .575 as a freshman to .722 as a soph and .785 this past summer in the Cape. Excellent speed as represented by going 32 out of 33 in steals last year between spring and summer. Red Sox 30th rounder in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Michael McAvene, Louisville
Listed at 6’3” 207 lbs. Quality FB (up to mid-90s) and CB but has trouble locating. Because of those control problems, he’s only worked 39 innings since entering school (and that includes a summer in the CCBL) with 55 punchouts but 34 walks.

SS Logan Davidson, Clemson
Listed at 6’3” 195 lbs. Switch-hitter for the Tigers who folks say may be able to stick at SS at the next level. Wood bat struggles in the Cape (.570 OPS) are starkly different than his plate work with the Tigers (.907 OPS). 30th round pick of the Phillies in 2016 out of HS. Son of the former Astro outfielder Mark.

C Kyle Wilkie, Clemson
Listed at 5’11” 205 lbs. D1 had him ranked as the 7th-best catcher in the CCBL this summer and it’s doubtful his offense was a huge contributor to that ranking (he hit .226/.314/.226 for Hyannis). He did have a very nice season at the plate for the Tigers in 2018 hitting .324/.422/.440 and finishing the year on a 39-game on-base streak and a 29-game hitting streak (4th longest in Clemson history).

3B Drew Mendoza, FSU
Listed at 6’5” 225 lbs. Lefty hitter who’s success for the Noles (.296/.424/.508) hasn’t translated to the CCBL (.199/.291/.278). One of the older juniors in the college draft class. 36th round pick of the Tigers out of HS. Statistics major.

LHP Drew Parrish, FSU
Listed at 5’11” 200 lbs. Friday night starter for the Noles. Up to low 90s FB, CB with lotsa spin and a nice CU. 128 Ks/37 BBs in 107 innings with just 71 hits allowed as a soph in 2018. Pitched for Team USA this past summer.

RHP Evan McKendry, Miami
Listed at 6’3” 200 lbs. 114 Ks vs 33 BBs in 87 innings for the Canes in 2018. Didn’t pitch during the summer (or in fall workouts) after undergoing hip surgery. Projected Friday starter.

RHP Greg Veliz, Miami
Listed at 6’2” 200 lbs. The projected Sunday starter for the Canes this spring had a superb freshman season in 2017 (just 36 hits allowed in 61 IP with 66 Ks) but was limited to only 17 innings last year due to injury. He did however throw another 21 innings in the Cape over the summer and was outstanding with 32 Ks vs 8 BBs. In their summer wood bat league rankings, BA had him ranked as the 41st-best overall prospect in the CCBL while D1 had him as the 16th-best pitcher. FB up to 96 and a possible plus SL with an above avg CU say the scouting reports.

SS Tanner Morris, Virginia
Listed at 6’2” 190 lbs. Lefty hitter. Draft-eligible soph who had a slick season for the Cavaliers in 2018 as a freshman (.298/.397/.374, 31 BBs vs 29 Ks) and even slicker summer in the Cape (.331/.404/.449). BA had him as the 30th-best prospect in the CCBL while D1 had him as the 12th-best SS. Some disagreement as to whether he sticks at SS in the pros. Experts believe the power will come.

OF Cam Simmons, Virginia
Listed at 6’3” 195 lbs. The RS junior put up huge numbers as a soph in 2017 for the Cavs (.352/.432/.563) although his subsequent summer in the Cape was disappointing (.200/.310/.290). A left shoulder injury caused him to miss all of 2018. Despite that, the Rangers still drafted him in the 15th round.

RHP Noah Murdock, Virginia
Listed at a skinny 6’8” 175 lbs. Shut down on May 17 of his freshman year and subsequently had TJS. Returned in time last year to throw 13 innings. Ready for a full season and currently throwing low 90s. Drafted in the 38th round in 2016 out of HS.

OF Chase Murray, Georgia Tech
Listed at 6’0” 189 lbs. Lefty hitter. After a broken hand limited his effectiveness as a freshman, broke out last year to the tune of .343/.410/.510 followed by a .317/.363/.446 summer in the Cape. Game action has seen him in LF and DH but has seen time in practice at CF and 2B.

HP Connor Thomas, Georgia Tech
Listed at 5’11” 175 lbs. The repertoire ain’t overwhelming but the results were impressive: 106 whiffs and just 10 walks in 97 frames for the Yellow Jackets last year.

RHP Xzavion Curry, Georgia Tech
Listed at 5’10” 183 lbs. A 2-way player prior to college and one of many future college/professional stars produced by the East Cobb program in suburban Atlanta. FB touching mid-90s, effective CU and inconsistent but promising CB produced 101 Ks vs 23 BBs in 93 IP last year for GT. One of the younger players in the college draft class.

RHP Tristin English, Georgia Tech
Listed at 6’3” 214 lbs. Final member of the Yellow Jackets weekend pitching troika. With professional teams more open to the idea of 2-way players, he might be best of that kind in D1 baseball. Hit .279/.324/.442 for GT in 2018 and was named first team All-ACC as a utility player. That was followed by a .300/.366/.510 season in the Cape. On the mound, in his first season back after missing 2017 with TJS he punched out 51 and walked 13 in 57 IP and then threw 12 effective innings in the summer. 39th rounder in 2015 out of HS but not drafted last June as a RS sophomore.

C Kyle McCann, Georgia Tech
Listed at 6’2” 217 lbs. Moves behind plate to replace second overall pick Joey Bart after playing most of his first two seasons at 1B. Strong arm but obviously needs to develop other aspects of his game back there. The lefty hitter went .300/.423/.600 last year for the Yellow Jackets but wasn’t near as good in CCBL play (.219/.309/.344). Another East Cobb product.

RHP Colin Peluse, Wake Forest
Listed at 6’3” 230 lbs. Sinking FB that can reach 94 and an effective SL. CU is still being worked on but reports from the fall said it was improving. K’d 63 in 84 IP for the Demon Deacons in 2018 while posting a 1.20 WHIP. He made a couple of appearances on Cape Cod over the summer, punching out 10 in 7 innings and allowing 4 walks and 3 hits.

RHP Morgan McSweeney, Wake Forest
Listed at 6’4” 210 lbs. McSweeney is considered to have better stuff than Peluse with a FB that was 91-95 in the fall along with a wipeout slider and quality changeup. He has walked 57 in 109 IP over his first 2 seasons as a Deacon.

OF DJ Poteet, Wake Forest
Listed at 6’4” 210 lbs. A shortstop in HS who has transitioned to the outfield grass and was the starting CF for the Demon Deacons as a freshman in 2018. The switch-hitter and draft-eligible soph definitely has the defensive chops and based on fall reports looks ready to dramatically improve on his .255/.385/.462 numbers from last season.

CUSA and Other Mid-Major Midwest Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

CUSA

OF/RHP Matt Wallner, Southern Miss
Listed at 6’5” 220 lbs. Projected 1st round pick heading into the spring who’s hit .343/.468/.637 over his first 2 seasons. Lefty hitter with arm for RF who currently patrols CF for the Golden Eagles. He’s also a force on the mound with a FB approaching 96. 32nd rounder of the Twins out of HS.

RHP Matt Canterino, Rice
Listed at 6’3” 220 lbs. The Southlake Carroll grad had a fantastic 2018 with 116 Ks vs 22 BBs in 94 IP (allowing just 65 hits) for the Owls before spending the summer with Falmouth in the Cape where he had 29 Ks/10 BBs in 24 innings and BA ranked him as the 20th-best prospect in the league. FB touching mid-90s and a plus CB reports indicate.

RHP Addison Ross, Rice
Listed at 6’1” 170 lbs. Conroe Oak Ridge HS kid who was reportedly 94-96 in the fall. Decent but not overwhelming results for the Owls in 2018 (53 Ks/16 BBs in 63 IP) and then on to the Cape where he was pummelled in a couple of starts.

3B Austin Shenton, Florida International
Listed at 6’0” 190 lbs. Drafted in the 34th round out of HS, he went the JUCO route in 2017 to try and improve his draft stock. When he failed to get picked after that initial season, decided to attend FIU for 2018. Hit .344/.417/.524 for the Panthers and then proceeded to tear up the CCBL in the summer with a .349/.450/.490 line and being named postseason MVP when he .522/.607/1.043 in 6 playoff games. BA ranked him 35th best prospect in the league while D1 tabbed him as the 4th best corner infield prospect. Reports don’t sound promising as to sticking at 3B long term.

RHP Mike Ruff, Florida Atlantic
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. A swing man for the Owls his first 2 years he moves into the weekend starting rotation this spring. Struck out 18 in 17.1 frames in the Cape this past summer. FB up to 95 with a full complement of other pitches (CB, SL, CU). Needs better command. Accounting major.

C Pedro Pages, Florida Atlantic
Listed at 6’1” 234 lbs. Hit .309/.368/.436 for the Owls in 2018 and .258/.319/.379 in the CCBL. Did miss about 18 games last year for FAU due to a wrist injury. Regarded as a strong defender. Born in Venezuela.

MAC

RHP Zach Kohn, Central Michigan
Listed at 6’4” 190 lbs. Can get up to 96 on the heater but normally sits in the 91-93 range. Has a CB that can be plus at times the reports say. Game results, though, have been a might unsatisfactory. He posted a 2.37 WHIP for the Chippewas in 2018 which included 27 walks in 23.2 IP. His talent still got him an invite to the Cape and the results over the summer were better with a 1.40 WHIP and “just” 19 walks in 32 innings. He did K 36. His control is said to have gotten better in fall workouts.

RHP John Matthews, Kent State
Listed at 6’0” 175 lbs. Position player to mound conversion as he was the Golden Flashes’ starting shortstop in 2017 as a freshman before transitioning to pitching in relief as a soph last year. Actually not so much a conversion as a re-conversion as he did pitch extensively in HS. 92-95 FB with a good CB. K’d 37 in 28 innings for KSU and allowed just 18 hits. Walks a bit high at 13. Really hit his stride this past summer in the Northwoods League with 53 Ks/12 BBs in 45 IP and dinged for just 28 hits.

RHP John Baker, Ball State
Listed at 6’3” 207 lbs. Doesn’t have the blazing FB (87-91) but still racks up the punchouts with a combo of good command and decent secondary pitches (CB, CU and cutter). 118 Ks vs 33 BBs in 95 IP for the Cardinals in 2018. His summer in the Cape with Cotuit yielded 31 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 37 innings.

RHP Drey Jameson, Ball State
Listed at 6’0” 165 lbs. The draft-eligible soph had a tremendous freshman debut for the Cardinals with 97 punchouts in 72 IP and ranking 19th in the country in K/9. FB up to 96 (94 said another report) with an above average CU and good-looking CB. Locating the plate is an issue with 44 walks.

MVC

OF John Rave, Illinois State
Listed at 6’0” 185 lbs. Lefty hitter who brings some pop, a bit o’ speed and a likelihood of staying in CF. Went .347/.402/.571 for the Redbirds in 2018 and the followed that up with a nice .304/.392/.464 summer performance in the CCBL. Drafted in the 35th round by the Red Sox out of HS in 2016.

RHP Adam Lukas, Evansville
Listed at 6’4” 210 lbs. Touches mid 90s with a FB that often misses the mark. Walked 50 in 89 innings in 2018 combined between the Purple Aces and a summer spent in the Northwoods League. But he also struck out 104 and allowed just 65 hits. And his BB/9 did actually go down significantly from spring to summer [6.5 to 3.8] while his K rate went up (9.3 to 11.4).

C Drew Millas, Missouri State
Listed at 6’2” 205 lbs. Gets good marks for his work behind the plate. .321/.416/.500 for the Bears in 2018 and then moved on to the Cape where he hit an unremarkable .261/.327/.293. Switch-hitter.

RHP Ray Gaither, DBU
Listed at 6’3” 220 lbs. Was the Friday night starter for the Patriots as a freshman in 2017. Went down with injury after 2 appearances in 2018 and subsequently underwent TJS. If completely healthy, he’s going to be used out of the pen initially this spring.

HORIZON LEAGUE

OF Peyton Burdick, Wright State
Listed at 6’0” 210 lbs. He bashed at a .347/.437/.459 clip for the Raiders in 2018 followed by a credible .252/.351/.435 performance for Cotuit in the CCBL which created some prospect buzz. A RS junior (so a bit older for the college jr draft class) after having TJS and missing all of 2017. He’s rated as having above average arm strength so no lingering problems there and bodes well for possibly a RF slot as a pro.

B1G and AAC Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

B1G

OF Matt Gorski, Indiana
Listed at 6’4” 195 lbs. Hit .356/.404/.554 for IU in 2018 and D1 rated him 10th-best corner outfielder in the Cape where he hit .286/.398/.329 and despite the 33% K rate there. Started at 1B as a freshman before moving to LF last year for the Hoosiers. Due to his strong arm, he’s slated for RF this year. Good speed--he’s 39-0 in steals over his two seasons.

2B Michael Massey, Illinois
Listed at 6’0” 190 lbs. Lefty hitter and high contact guy who limits the strikeouts. .326/.369/.514 for the Fighting Illini in 2018 followed by a .280/.337/.366 summer with Brewster in the CCBL.

LHP Tommy Henry, Michigan
Listed at 6’3” 205 lbs. 4 pitch repertoire kicked off by a 90-93 FB with a decent SL and CU and a CB needing more work say those who’ve seen him in action. 1.19 WHIP for UM in 2018 with 77 Ks in 81 IP. D1 rated him the 8th-best lefty in the CCBL after putting up a 1.36 WHIP for Yarmouth-Dennis this past summer.

RHP Jake Weisenburger, Michigan
Listed at 6’3” 220 lbs. FB up to 94 and developing SL and CU but has trouble locating them as evidenced by the 28 walks in 44 innings last year between the Wolverines and Sanford in the NECBL. But he did whiff 56. Again expected to work out of the bullpen for UM this spring.

OF Dominic Canzone, OSU
Listed at 6’1” 190 lbs. The lefty hitter went .323/.395/.447 for the Buckeyes in 2018 with 31 walks vs 29 whiffs. .276/.320/.345 with Brewster this past summer. LF profile says at least one report so he’s gotta bring more power this spring..

LHP Mason Feole, UConn
Listed at 6’1” 194 lbs. Low 90s FB (can touch 94-95) coupled with an above average CB resulted in 120 Ks in 100 innings for the Huskies in 2018. Control problematic though with 49 walks. Also needs 3rd pitch. Pitched for Team USA this past summer (11 scoreless IP) and also tossed 2 starts for Wareham in the Cape, K’ing 10 and walking just 1 in 7 IP.

RHP Jacob Wallace, UConn
Listed at 6’1” 190 lbs. Has been used out of the Huskies’ bullpen his 1st two years and is scheduled to be their closer this spring. FB touching 96 and a plus SL has allowed him to rack up some incredible strikeout numbers--63 K in 43 innings last spring and 25 in 13.2 IP in the summer in the CCBL (didn’t allow a run and walked 5). Big spin on both pitches--up to 2600 on the former and 2700 on the latter. D1 ranked him as the 15th-best righty in the Cape.

OF Bryant Packard, East Carolina
Listed at 6’3” 200 lbs. The lefty hitter put up some big boy numbers for the Pirates last year at .406/.462/.671. Continued to hit in the Cape with a .305/.421/.576 line before departing for Team USA where he posted a .333 BA. Baseball America tabbed him as 17th-best prospect in the CCBL and D1 ranked him the 7th-best corner OF. A back issue has reportedly bothered him at times at ECU. Likely limited to LF.

1B Spencer Brickhouse, East Carolina
Listed at 6’4” 235 lbs. Another lefty hitter for the Pirates, something of an off year in 2018 (.298/.382/.502) compared to his freshman campaign (.310/.385/.513). 12% K rate for the Pirates last spring (vs a 11.8% BB rate) but did spike to a 25% K rate for Bourne in the Cape where he went just .247/.333/.373. BA still rated him the 38th-best prospect there and D1 12th among corner infielders. Limited to 1B so bat must carry. Engineering major.

LHP Jake Agnos, East Carolina
Listed at 5’11” 207 lbs. A swing man for ECU, he whiffed 86 in just 63.2 IP last year though he also walked 38. Made one start for Harwich in the CCBL when he K’d 10 and walked 2 in 6 scoreless innings before going off to pitch for Team USA and was superb there with 14 whiffs in 9.1 IP while allowing just 1 run on 1 walk and 5 hits. Reports say a FB up to 94, wipeout CB and average CU.

RHP Trey Benton, East Carolina
Listed at 6’4” 209 lbs. 68 Ks/13 BBs in 69 IP for ECU in 2018 but that control deserted him during the summer with Bourne as he yielded 10 walks in 22.1 IP while whiffing 19. FB can reach 94 at times and supposedly has 3 average secondary pitches.

3B Jared Triolo, U of H
Listed at 6’4” 215 lbs. The former Lake Travis HSer had a very nice soph season in 2018 as he went .344/.434/.457 for the Coogs. Also did a competent job in the Cape (.276/.364/.423) and D1 rated him 11th-best corner infielder there. Needs more of his raw power to show up in games. Reports on his defense at third seem positive so far.

3B Kody Hoese, Tulane
Listed at 6’4” 200 lbs. .291/.368/.435 for the Green Wave in 2018 and subsequently showed increased pop in the NECBL as he hit .283/.370/.493 over the summer with Newport. That increased power carried over to fall ball per at least one report. Considered a strong defender at 3B. 35th-rounder of the Royals in 2018 as a draft-eligible soph.

1B Joe Genord, South Florida
Listed at 6’2” 193 lbs. Breakout season (.306/.394/.633) for the Bulls last year after a mediocre first two years. A senior so probably more likely to be taken in rounds 6-10. Taken in the 19th round of the 2015 draft out of HS by the Dodgers but not taken in last year’s draft.

PAC 12 Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

C Adley Rutschman, OSU
Listed at 6’2” 216 lbs. The consensus #1 overall pick heading into the spring.

RHP Grant Gambrell, OSU
Listed at 6’4” 225 lbs. Inconsistent work as a starting pitcher for the Beavers last season. Struck out 57 in 57 IP but also yielded a 1.43 WHIP. Up to 96 on the FB and also has a good slider and a decent change.

LHP Brandon Eisert, OSU
Listed at 6’0” 209 lbs. Used as a reliever his first 2 seasons with the Beavers and likely returns there this spring. Up to 93-94 this fall and apparently has solid secondary pitches. 102 Ks in 103.2 innings of work in his OSU career with 76 hits and 31 walks allowed.

SS Beau Philip, OSU
Listed at 6’0” 188 lbs. The juco transfer has 55 speed and looks to be able to handle the SS position at the next level. One of the better prospects in the West Coast League this past summer--he hit .293/.364/.415.

RHP Ryne Nelson, Oregon
Listed at 6’4” 184 lbs. Two-way player for the Ducks as an infielder/reliever in 2017 & 2018 but will focus exclusively on mound work this spring as the hard-thrower will get a chance to move into the starting rotation. Whiffed 54 in 36.2 innings for the Ducks over the last 2 seasons. Opened eyes on the Cape this summer with 26 Ks in 17 IP while allowing just 17 baserunners (8 hits, 9 walks). BA named him 5th-best overall prospect in the league. Besides a FB reaching 99, also has a SL and CU but needs to work on both.

RHP Kenyon Yovan, Oregon
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. Dominant as the Ducks’ closer in 2017 (1.97 ERA, 16 saves, 36 Ks/6 BBs in 32 IP), the former 32nd round pick of the Mariners was nearly as successful last year after moving into the starting rotation. Had 98 Ks vs 37 BBs in 85 IP last spring. Split time in the summer between the CCBL (BA ranked him the 28th-best prospect there) and Team USA. Also expected to do some DH’ing this year for OU as he’s done the past 2 seasons. But the mound is his future--in addition to a FB reaching 94, his 3 secondaries (CB, SL, CU) are all at least average at this point with perhaps his slider a tick above the rest according to reports.

OF Jonny Deluca, Oregon
Listed at 5’11’’ 196 lbs. Played CF for OU in 2018 and expected to return there this spring but whether that’s his long-term position is a bit unclear. Has also worked out at 2B and that could be his position in the pros (at least according to his HC George Horton). The stick was not friendly for him as a freshman last year as he batted just .212/.270/.325 in the spring. But summer in the Cape was another story, going .296/.369/.368 and impressing scouts there. D1 even ranked him as the 3rd-best CF in the CCBL. Draft-eligible soph and a switch-hitter, he was a 39th rounder of the Twins in 2017 out of HS.

3B Spencer Steer, Oregon
Listed at 5’11” 190 lbs. Like Deluca, didn’t necessarily impress all that much at the plate last spring for the Ducks (.275/.381/.407) but got the stick going for Orleans in the summer and hit .304/.351/.481. BA’s Cape Cod rankings said he was the 49th-best prospect there. Reports on his defense at 3B seem pretty upbeat and he also showed he could play 2B well when positioned there in the CCBL. 29th rounder in 2016 out of HS.

1B Andrew Vaughn, Cal
Listed at 5’11” 214 lbs. Viewed as a Top 10 pick going into the spring.

RHP Jared Horn, Cal
Listed at 6’4” 225 lbs. Big-time arm but the control has been severely lacking as evidenced by the 90 walks in 149 innings over his first two years. Even after walking another 19 in 28 IP in the Cape this past summer, D1 still saw enough potential from his heater and CB to rate him as 9th best RHP in the league. 20th round pick of the Brewers out of HS in 2016.

SS Cameron Eden, Cal
Listed a 6’2” 180 lbs. Glove is currently showing more consistency than the bat. After an awfully nice freshman season for the Golden Bears (.315/.361/.472), everything came crashing down for him in 2018 with a .247/.306/.292 spring followed by a .254/.302/.325 summer for Brewster in the CCBL. Obviously needs a bounceback season offensively to sniff 1st five round consideration.

OF Kyle Stowers, Stanford
Listed at 6’3” 200 lbs. Lefty swinger for the Cardinal has arm for right. After struggling in limited action as a freshman in 2017, broke out with a decent season in the spring (.286/.383/.5112) but then really came on strong with a .326/.361/.565 summer in the Cape. BA tabbed him as the 14th best prospect there while D1 rated him the 3rd best corner OF.

LHP Erik Miller, Stanford
Listed at 6’5” 240 lbs. Big guy, big stuff, big control problems. 93-97 on the FB with a good CU and promising SL. But a combined 38 walks in 72 innings between Palo Alto and the Cape in 2018 though he also had 84 whiffs.

1B Andrew Daschbach, Stanford
Listed at 6’3” 225 lbs. .286/.358/.568 for the Cardinal in 2018 with 17 HRs and an ugly 25% K rate. .306/.424/.515 for Yarmouth-Dennis in the summer and reduced the K rate to 19%. 1B ultimately is probably his spot but might be a fit in LF. 40th round pick of the Rays in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Jack Little, Stanford
Listed at 6’4” 190 lbs. Perhaps the premier closer in all of college baseball. 56 Ks/8 BBs in 44 IP for the Cardinal in 2018 with 15 saves and an 0.60 ERA. 18 whiffs vs just 1 walk this past summer with Falmouth in 8.1 innings though he was touched up for 5 runs on 10 hits. Up to 94 on the FB and a very good SL.

C Maverick Handley, Stanford
Listed at 5’11” 205 lbs. Grades high on his defense and makeup but offense is a work in progress. A .231/.362/.350 spring in 2018 (shortened by a skateboard accident) was followed by a .252/.361/.369 summer with Falmouth in the Cape. Reports from the fall indicate he’s made improvements offensively. Bioengineering major and says he wants to be an orthopedic surgeon.

1B/OF Michael Toglia, UCLA
Listed at 6’5” 200 lbs. The Bruins’ slugger pumped out a .336/.449/.588 line last spring. Followed that up with a .209/.323/.388 performance in the Cape. While disappointing, BA still rated him 15th best prospect in the CCBL and D1 said he was the 3rd best corner infielder. The switch-hitter will be one of the youngest college juniors at the time of the draft. Above average defender at 1B but may be able to play corner OF. 35th round pick of the Rockies out of HS.

OF Chase Strumpf, UCLA
Listed at 6’1” 190 lbs. Big, big numbers as a soph last season--.363/.475/.633 as he led the Bruins in all 3 categories. Didn’t play this past summer due to injury (completely healthy now said reports from the fall) but did hit .335/.425/.549 in 2017 in the Northwoods League.

RHP Ryan Garcia, UCLA
Listed at 6’0” 180 lbs. Up to 94 on the FB among his 4 pitch arsenal which also includes an above average SL and decent CU. D1 rated him the 12th-best RHP in the CCBL this past summer after he posted 33 walks vs just 8 walks in 28 IP for Wareham. That followed a very nice soph season with the Bruins with an 0.98 WHIP and 76 whiffs in 76.2 frames.

3B Ryan Kreidler, UCLA
Listed at 6’4” 208 lbs. Strong defender who’s played both 3B and SS and likely plays the latter at the next level. Played short for Wareham last summer and D1 rated him the 13th-best middle infielder there. Bat is problematic as he’s gone .232/.337/.342 over his first 2 seasons for the Bruins and .229/.300/.339 in the Cape.

OF Jeremy Ydens, UCLA
Listed at 6’2” 200 lbs. Breakout season for the Bruins last year at .350/.421/.558 followed by a .304/.347/.432 summer with Wareham. D1 slotted him at 10th best CF prospect there. 40th rounder of the Cardinals in 2016 out of HS and 33rd round pick of the D-Backs last year as a draft-eligible soph.

C/OF Blake Sabol, USC
Listed at 6’4” 215 lbs. Will move to the outfield full-time this spring for the Trojans after spending time behind the plate and in the OF the previous 2 seasons. Unclear where he lands ultimately as a pro but I’d suspect corner OF or 1B if catcher doesn’t work out. So-so numbers in for the Trojans in 2018 at .276/.338/.390. Blasted off in the Cape however with .340/.445/.573 numbers which resulted in BA naming him 22nd best prospect there while D1 said he was the 8th best corner guy. Reports say the offensive improvement there carried over to the fall. The lefty hitter was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2016 draft out of HS. Football great Troy Palomalu is his 2nd cousin.

RHP Kyle Hurt, USC
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. Friday night starter who brings the FB at 95 with reportedly legit secondaries. Prior to the Trojans, pitched all 4 years under HC and ex-MLB hurler Kirk McCaskill at Rancho Santa Fe’s Torrey Pines HS. An horrendous 58 walks in 81 innings as a freshman last year for SC. Numbers in the Cape were more respectable with 22 Ks/9 BBs in 23 IP. Draft-eligible soph who was taken in the 34th round by the Phillies out of HS in 2017.

INF Cameron Cannon, Arizona
Listed at 5’10” 196 lbs. Bopped at a .321/.427/.549 pace last spring with 37 BBs vs just 22 Ks. A not quite so shiny .263/.298/.338 line in the CCBL but still was rated the 27th best overall prospect there by BA (and 9th best middle infield prospect by D1). He’s played mostly 2B for the Cats but played 3B for Falmouth during the summer and got good reviews there. He’s scheduled to start the season this spring at SS. We’ll see how long that lasts. But the positional versatility he’s shown thus far certainly won’t hurt his draft stock. The Glendale, AZ native was a 21st rounder of the D-Backs out of HS in 2016.

3B Nick Quintana, Arizona
Listed at 5’10” 187 lbs. The good news offensively was his .313/.413/.592 performance for the Wildcats in 2018. The bad news? A collective .230/.312/.423 over the last 2 years in the Cape with an appalling 38% K rate. Thumbs up on the defense say the reports. 11th rounder of the Red Sox in 2016 out of HS.

C Matt Dyer, Arizona
Listed at 6’4” 175 lbs. Glendale, AZ native and teammate of Cameron Cannon at Mountain Ridge HS who played at Oregon his freshman year in 2017 before transferring to Arizona and sitting out 2018. Did play during the summer for Yarmouth-Dennis and hit .250/.318/.317. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence but he did hit a very decent .268/.355/.362 two years ago for the Ducks in his first taste of college ball. Aside from noting a decent arm, defensive reports are sketchy. Needs to get stronger overall.

OF Hunter Bishop, ASU
Listed at 6’4” 215 lbs. Call him a 4-tool player at this point. All the other elements are there (including the ability to play CF) but he’s yet to show he can consistently hit. A .250 BA for the Sun Devils last year and a .223 BA over 2 years in the CCBL attest to that. But the tools are sexy enough that BA still rated him the 46th-best overall prospect in the Cape this summer. His coach says he put things together at the plate this fall so we’ll see. Lefty hitter and 24th round pick of the Padres in 2016 out of HS. Brother Braden was a 3rd round pick of the Mariners in 2015.

RHP Alec Marsh, ASU
Listed at 6’2” 220 lbs. 94-95 on his FB in the Cape this summer where he racked up 20 whiffs in just 11.1 innings. But he does have problems finding the plate as indicated by a BB/9 of over 4. A Milwaukee kid.

C Nick Kahle, Wash
Listed a 5’10” 210 lbs. Gets good marks on the defensive side. Bat is not overwhelming--his numbers last spring were decent enough (.293/.392/.457) but he’s struggled to hit the last 3 summers in wood bat leagues.

RHP Josh Burgmann, Wash
Listed at 6’0” 2015 lbs. TJS wrecked his freshman year in 2017 causing him to miss the final 2 months of the season. Didn’t return until late March 2018. So the RS soph really only has about 4 months of college experience under his belt. FB up to 95 combined with what they say is an above average CU and good slider. 30th round pick of the Cardinals in 2016 out of Vauxhall Baseball Academy in Alberta, Canada.

SEC Names to Know for 1st 5 rounds of 2019 Draft

LHP Zack Thompson, Kentucky
Listed at 6’3” 225 lbs. Generally considered at Top 15 pick heading into the spring.

RHP Tyler Dyson, Florida
Listed at 6’3” 225 lbs. Didn’t really start pitching until his senior year in HS. Has a FB touching upper 90s and a high-spin SL but command/control and continuing to develop his CU needed. A shoulder impingement shut him down early last spring but he was back pitching in the summer both for Team USA and Falmouth so it couldn’t have been considered too serious. 51 Ks/28 BBs in 50 innings in 2018 for the Gators and 23 Ks vs 9 BBs in 19 IP in the Cape. D1 rated him the 5th-best righty in the CCBL and BA the 7th-best overall.

SS Brady McConnell, Florida
Listed at 6’3” 195 lbs. The draft-eligible soph played in only 9 games last year as a freshman due to a wrist injury. They say he has a good shot at sticking at short in the pros. 33rd round pick of the Reds in 2017 out of HS.

OF Wil Dalton, Florida
Listed at 6’0” 190 lbs. 19 HRs last spring for the Gators ranked 11th nationally while hitting .262/.338/.542. That was his 1st season with the Gators after spending his freshman year in JUCO. Apparently has the arm for RF. 29th rounder of the O’s in 2016 out of HS.

OF Austin Langworthy, Florida
Listed at 5’10” 195 lbs. .290/.404/.403 for the Gators last spring but poor numbers over 2 years in the CCBL (.222/.335/.352). Scouting folks seem to like him as noted by BA’s rating of 34th-best prospect in the Cape this past summer. He did hit 7 longballs in 26 games for Falmouth and there is some expectation that the power surge will continue this spring. The lefty hitter was the 31st round pick of the Reds out of HS.

SS Will Holland, Auburn
Listed at 5’10” 185 lbs. Expected to go in the Top 20 picks as we head into the spring.

RHP Davis Daniel, Auburn
Listed at 6’1” 190 lbs. A 1.59 WHIP last year for the Tigers though he did whiff 70 in 66 ⅔ innings. Began the spring as the Saturday starter but was demoted to the pen and impressed there. Followed that with more solid work for Chatham with 15 Ks/4 BBs in 15.2 innings. Tabbed as the Friday starter this spring (at least to begin this season). FB up to 96-97 and his SL can be plus at times say observers. 11th round pick of the Brewers in 2018 as a draft-eligible soph.

INF Braden Shewmake, A&M
Listed at 6'4" 190 lbs. Preseason projections say he’s gone in the Top 25 picks. The lefty swinger might not stick at shortstop long-term.

LHP John Doxakis, A&M
Listed at 6’4” 215 lbs. Impressive soph season for the Aggie in 2018, quickly going from reliever to mid-week starter to weekend rotation and ending up with 92 Ks vs 29 walks and just 72 hits allowed in 93 IP. He then spent the summer making 3 starts for Team USA and a couple of outings in the Texas Collegiate League. The Lamar HS grad opened this spring with a 1-hit blanking of outmanned Fordham with 12 Ks and 0 walks. A deceptive southpaw whose stuff seems to be getting better with a FB that sits in the 90-92 range along with a said-to-be improved SL and CU. A guy to watch this spring.

RHP Mason Cole, A&M
Listed at 6’6” 200 lbs. The former Round Rock HSer and RS soph has pitched just 9.2 innings for the Aggies after making just 2 appearances back in 2017 before having to undergo TJS. He returned to pitch in 7 games out of the bullpen last season. Followed that up with a summer in the Northwoods League where he walked 26 in 35.2 IP. Reports from the fall were encouraging with a FB up to 96. He’ll again be in pen this spring with a possibility of being the Aggie closer at some point.

OF JJ Bleday, Vandy
Listed at 6’3” 205 lbs. Missed 22 games in 2018 with an oblique injury but still managed to have a superb .368/.494/.511 season and ended the year with a 28 game on-base streak and 10-game hitting streak. Hit .391 in the 12 SEC games he was able to play in. Went on to hit .311/.374/.500 for Orleans in the CCBL and BA rated him 10th-best prospect in the league (D1 had him as the 2nd-best corner OF). Has 65 BBs vs 49 Ks over his first 2 seasons with the Dores. Lefty swinger who they say has the arm for RF.

OF Pat DeMarco, Vandy
Listed at 5’11” 205 lbs. The kid from Staten Island is a draft-eligible soph who (along with his dad who is a commodities trader) moved to Georgia his final 2 years of HS solely to play baseball. .277/.353/.479 with 11 homers and 10 steals as a freshman for the Dores in 2018 followed by a .265/.306/.355 summer with Orleans. Might be versatile enough defensively to play all 3 positions in the grass. 24th rounder of the Yankees out of HS in 2017.

LHP Jackson Gillis, Vandy
Listed at 6’3” 225 lbs. The reliever has a mid-90s FB, plus slider and apparently even a reliable CU. 44 whiffs vs 17 walks in 33.2 frames last year for the Commodores. A bit of a rough go in brief action with Harwich in the Cape with 13 baserunners allowed in 7.2 IP with 6 Ks.

Listed at 6’5” 2015 lbs. 107 Ks/35 BBs in 96 IP last spring with just 75 hits allowed. Again will be the Dores’ Friday night starter this season.Low 90’s FB that occasionally touches 94 with a SL and CU that reportedly need some additional work.

C Philip Clarke, Vandy
Listed at 5’11” 190 lbs. Draft-eligible soph hit a very fine .294/.382/.450 as a frosh last spring including .302 in SEC play but a subpar summer in Orleans at .232/.291/.284. Lefty hitter. Thumbs up seems to be the conclusion thus far on the defense.

LHP Zach King, Vandy
Listed at 6’6” 210 lbs. Being used out of the pen for the Dores but with a FB touching 93 and average to plus CB and CU he could start for many teams across the country. 51 Ks/21 BBs in 52 IP last spring. Saw brief action in the CCBL and punched out 9 in 7.2 innings.

OF Cameron Misner, Mizzou
Listed at 6’4” 225 lbs. Most preseason predictions have him going in the 15-25 range in the 1st round.

LHP TJ Sikkema, Mizzou
Listed at 6’0” 220 lbs. The Friday starter for the Tigers had something of a down season in 2018 as he pitched to a 1.36 WHIP in 70 innings with 75 Ks. Not horrible but certainly nothing like his freshman campaign when he posted an 0.88 WHIP (9th in the nation) and had 81 Ks vs just 18 BBs. Had an 0.99 WHIP in the Cape this past summer with 23 Ks in 31.2 IP. His stuff isn’t the greatest with a high 80’s FB and a slurvy breaking ball which is his go-to pitch.

RHP Zack Hess, LSU
Listed at 6’6” 220 lbs. One of the older juniors in the college draft class. Moved from the closer’s role in 2017 (83 whiffs in 60.2 IP and a 1.14 WHIP) to the starting rotation in 2018 where the results were decidedly more mixed. Rang up 107 punchouts in 92.2 innings but also allowing 49 walks. To go along with that scatter-shot command, he’s got a FB that reaches mid 90s and a decent slider per those watch him. He had a good summer in limited appearances in the CCBL (just 2 walks/hits allowed in 7 innings with 8 Ks) and also reportedly for Team USA. Allegedly he looked good in the fall too before being shut down early but that may not have carried over to spring though as he got pounded by ULM in the season opener the other day. Drafted in the 35th round by the Yankees in 2016 out of HS and the Braves in the 36th round last year as a draft-eligible soph.

SS Josh Smith, LSU
Listed at 5’10” 175 lbs. A stress reaction in his back caused him to miss all but 6 games in 2018. Played in all 72 games for the Tigers in 2017 where he started at 3B and hit .281/.407/.409 with 39 BBs vs 33 Ks and then topped that with a .382/.478/.513 summer in the Cape. The lefty hitter will play SS this spring (as he did last year before getting injured) and gets good marks there. 38th rounder of the Tigers in 2016 out of HS.

OF Zach Watson, LSU
Listed at 6’0” 165 lbs. Posted .317/.376/.507 numbers as a freshman which dropped slightly last year to .308/.366/.479. Did miss 9 games early in the season with a strained oblique. Saw limited action in the Cape this past summer where he hit .382/.450/.500. He also played for Team USA. Has been the starting CF for the Tigers since claiming the job in March of 2017 and after being an infielder throughout his HS career. And yes he’ll definitely stick in the middle of the outfield grass at the next level. A 40th round pick of the Red sox in 2018 as a draft-eligible soph.

RHP Todd Peterson, LSU
Listed at 6’5” 230 lbs. Up to 95 on the FB this fall with a good CB. His overall numbers for 2018 don’t look particularly outstanding (only 38 Ks in 47 IP while surrendering 48 hits) but that masks what he did down the stretch. Over his last 8 appearances, allowed just 8 hits and 1 walk in 13.2 IP with 11 walks as he showed signs of becoming a dominant closer.

OF Antoine Duplantis, LSU
Listed at 5’11” 175 lbs. A senior who has put up a .324/.381/.420 line over his 3 seasons with the Tigers and .266/.319/.374 numbers over two summers in the Cape. Didn’t play this past summer after sustaining a shoulder injury while training with Team USA. Above-average defender in RF. Despite the lack of pop, did get drafted in the 19th round by the Indians in 2018. Has hit exactly 2 home runs in each of his first 3 seasons but already has 2 HRs after just 2 games this spring. A likely budget pick in rounds 6-10 but if he continues to show power might move up into the 1st 5 rounds. Hasn’t had much opportunity to play CF with LSU but that may be a realistic option as a pro.

C Saul Garza, LSU
Listed at 6’3” 230 lbs. Played 1 year at Howard JC before transferring and this will be his 1st season with the Tigers. BA rated him the 2nd best prospect in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League this past summer. His K rate there was 33% however so until proven otherwise there’s going to be questions about the stick. Based on his fall performance, Paul Mainieri thinks he’ll be fine both at the plate and behind it and was quoted as saying Garza reminds him of Baylor backstop Shea Langeliers. 31st round pick of the Cardinals in 2017 out of HS and is draft-eligible this season as a soph.

LHP Matt Cronin, Arkansas
Listed at 6’2” 195 lbs. The Hogs’ closer has a FB up to 95 and reportedly a good CB and has developed a splitter. 59 Ks/18 BBs in 48 IP last spring with an 0.81 WHIP and 14 saves.

RHP Isaiah Campbell, Arkansas
Listed at 6’4” 225 lbs. FB sat 94-96 in the fall with improved command said the reports. 75 Ks vs 29 BBs in 70 IP in 2018. Will be the Friday starter this spring. Bone spurs in his elbow wiped out his 2017 season which is why he was draft-eligible as a soph last season and was taken in the 24th round by the Angels.

OF Dominic Fletcher, Arkansas
Listed at 5’10” 185 lbs. The lefty hitter put up a .806 OPS in 2018 which was down from the .851 OPs he put up the prior year as a freshman. Despite the reports of superlative defense in CF, there is some question whether he can continue there at the next level given his somewhat fringey speed. If he doesn’t stick at that position in the pros, does have the arm for right (BA rated him having the best OF arm in the SEC)..

LHP Jacob Kostyshock, Arkansas
Listed at 6’4” and just 175 lbs. The results as a Razorback have yet to show up but he did gain a bit of traction this past summer in the Northwoods League with a 1.25 WHIP in 27 IP and continued on to the fall showing a plus SL and FB up to 96 with a developing CU. Will again be used out of the bullpen this spring or if things really go well as a mid-week starter.

SS Cam Shepherd, Georgia
Listed at 6’1” 187 lbs. Slumped to .244/.357/.385 last year after a solid .307/.354/.452 as a freshman. Had the opportunity to play in the Cape this past summer but instead chose to work out and get stronger. Reports said he looked much better in the fall. FWIW, went 5-10 this past weekend in the opening series against Dayton with a pair of doubles and 4 BBs vs 0 Ks. One report suggested he might eventually have to move off shortstop at the next level. Drafted in the 29th round out of HS by the Red Sox in 2016.

3B Aaron Schunk, Georgia
Listed at 6’2” 205 lbs. Can he take a step forward offensively this season? His numbers last year for the Dawgs don’t jump out at you (.299/.340/.411) at least on the power side. That lack of pop was also highlighted in the CCBL this past summer as he generated an ISO of just .049. Even so, D1 still ranked him the 10th-best corner infield prospect in the Cape. If the raw power he’s displayed in BP finally starts to show up in games this spring then he starts to look a lot more interesting. Also served as the closer for the Bulldogs last season and not surprisingly was rated by BA as having the best infield arm in the SEC and gets good marks for his work at 3B.

RHP Tony Locey, Georgia
Listed at 6’3” and a hefty 239 lbs. 97 Ks in 96 innings over his 1st 2 years with the Bulldogs but also 61 walks. A summer in the Cape back in 2017 went better and was listed by BA as the 42nd-best prospect there. But that promise is still mostly unrealized making this spring fairly critical to his draft hopes. Mid 90s FB with an improving CB and CU. If the command ever comes...

RHP Garrett Stallings, Tenn
Listed at 6’2” 200 lbs. More command and guile than plus stuff. BA said he was the 42nd-best prospect this past summer in the Cape after K’ing 21 and walking zip in 18 IP. Carried over to the start of this season as he blanked WVU over 7 innings last Friday in the season opener, allowing just 1 hit and 0 walks and whiffing a career high 8.

SS Andre Lipcius, Tenn
Listed at 6’1” 190 lbs. Had a very successful 2018, going .315/.399/.473 for the Vols and followed that with a .313/.391/.456 summer with Harwich. Played 1B as a freshman (Nick Senzel was staked out at short) but shifted to the left side of the infield last year. If he doesn’t stick at SS long-term, looks to have the arm for 3B. His twin brother Luc also plays for the Vols. Nuclear engineering major.

RHP Zach Linginfelter, Tenn
Listed at 6’5” 220 lbs. 132 Ks in 111 IP for the Vols over 2 seasons but also 63 walks. The free passes continued in the Cape with 18 walks this past summer in 31 innings. Low to mid 90s FB with inconsistent secondaries. Twice drafted previously--in 2016 in the 16th round out of HS by the Yankees and in 2018 as a draft-eligible soph in the 19th round by the Nats.

SS Grae Kessinger, Ole Miss
Listed at 6’2” 200 lbs. Hit .300/.389/.473 for the Rebs in 2018. Grandson of Don, the slick-fielding Cubs shortstop back in the 70’s. 26th rounder of the Padres in 2016 out of HS.

RHP Will Ethridge, Ole Miss
Listed at 6’5” 240 lbs. FB that can bump 94 and decent CB and CU. Friday night starter this spring after mostly pitching out of the bullpen his first 2 seasons where he racked up 103 Ks vs 25 BBs in 92 innings with 81 hits allowed. His CCBL experience has been a bit rougher with 30 hits surrendered in 23 IP and 21 Ks/7 BBs. 35th rounder of the Mariners out of HS in 2016.

1B/OF Thomas Dillard, Ole Miss
Listed at 6’0” 230 lbs. Terrific .310/.439/.563 season last spring although his subsequent Cape numbers were more subdued at .250/.383/.385. Switch-hitter. Runs pretty well, stealing 17 out of 20 bases in 2018.

RHP Parker Caracci, Ole Miss
Listed at 6’0” 205 lbs. Redshirted his first 2 seasons (no injury involved) before seeing action for the first time in 2018. And it was a helluva season as he established himself as one of the nations’ premier college closers with 73 Ks in 48 IP and 38 hits and 14 walks allowed. That got the draft-eligible soph selected in the 37th round last year by the Blue Jays. Has a heater that can get up to 96 and an excellent SL.

OF Jake Mangum, Miss State
Listed at 6’1” 180 lbs. 4-year starter in CF for the Bulldogs. .355/.420/.455 over his 3 seasons in Starkville. Draft pick in 2017 as a draft-eligible soph (30th round, Yankees) and again in 2018 as a junior (32nd round, Mets).

LHP Ethan Small, Miss State
Listed at 6’3” 215 lbs. The Friday starter punched out 122 while walking 33 over 101 innings last spring. FB up to 93 with a decent CB. Missed 2017 with TJS. 26th rounder by the D-Backs last year as a draft-eligible soph.

RHP Keegan James, Miss State
Listed at 6’2” 215 lbs. Sunday starter this spring after working out of the bullpen his first 2 seasons. Heater up to 95. Like Ethan Small, missed 2017 after undergoing TJS.

Daniel, who left Friday’s game after two innings with tightness in his right forearm, underwent an MRI on Monday. The MRI alleviated the worst fears, an injured or torn ulnar collateral ligament. Orthopedist James Andrews has evaluated the results of the MRI and determined there is no UCL damage. He is expected examine Daniel on Wednesday and determine when he can start to throw again.

The New Thing I Learned Today...

I was aware of the rule allowing an athlete to compete professionally in one sport while still maintaining amateur status in a second sport. But I was unaware of the rule that allows you to regain your amateur status in the same sport after having lost such status previously. To wit these provisions that exists in the NAIA rules (don't have a clue as to whether the NCAA has a similar provision):

Article VII Section E of the 2018-2019 NAIA Handbook for having amateur status reinstated:

1. Discontinue violation of NAIA amateur-standing regulations.

2. You will be charged a season of competition for every year you competed at a professional level. The NAIA gives you four seasons of competition for the first 10 semesters or 15 quarters you are enrolled in college.

3. Attending two consecutive semester, or three consecutive quarters, at an institution prior to being a part of an athletic team.

4. Finally, an athlete must submit verification to the NAIA National Coordinating Committee proving they have completed the three previous requirements to restore their amateur status.

I was curious and had to track down the provision after noticing that Matthew Merrill was playing baseball for the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). Merrill was taken by the Astros out of high school in the 37th round of the 2017 draft. He then signed a contract, was assigned to the GCL and pitched in 6 games. He was subsequently released in May of 2018 without pitching in a game in '18. By my reading of the above rule, he should have at most 3 seasons of eligibility with the Drovers (and perhaps only 2 depending on how 2018 is factored in).

30ish is where most of those sites have a lot of prep pitchers so it makes sense for them to do that. With the Beer pick last year the Astros clearly had their own view of the world as most sites didn't have him in the upper 20's to low 30's. Most had him in the low 40's range. Therefore I won't even begin to guess. 32 is just too far down the draft line.

For whatever it's worth, Spencer Morris over on TCB sounds pretty bullish on the Day 2 picks, especially the first three. Springer like comps on Jordan Brewer, while Colin Barber is a toolsy prep outfielder who hasn't put it all together. I like the Hunter Brown pick a lot. Young college Junior with a live arm.

Texas Longhorn Blair Henley apparently has a pretty high spin rate on his CB.

He is Garrett's brother.
He moved from catcher to pitcher in high school and pitched @ USC until TJS that wiped out his junior year (2018).
