Are there questions about him remaining at catcher?  I’d hope not for a first rounder.

I didn’t see anything about his receiving skills yet.

Saw this:

Quote
Korey Lee, C, California (Cal) - Teammate to Andrew Vaughn, and has been hitting cleanup most of the season. Lee has also been in the mix as their second best hitter too. On the season he’s hitting .325 with 11 HR. The negatives are that he does have swing and miss to his game. On the defensive side, Lee has thrown out 50% of runners, but has five errors and five passed balls.

Until this morning, I didn't even realize they were going more than one round last night.

Anyway, in Round 2, the good guys get:

Grae Kessinger, SS Ole Miss, 4 yr Jr.

Grandson of former Cubs SS Don Kessinger. And, yes, I remember Don playing. Played on an infield with Banks, Beckert and Santo. Grandpa was a bit lanky for a SS and not much of a hitter but could pick 'em at short.

Thanks for the info.  For those so inclined, Ole Miss is still alive (against the Piggies, IIRC), so if you want to see the guy play, you'll have a chance this weekend.

Baseball America calls Lee "the biggest surprise selection of the first round":
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/was-korey-lee-mlb-drafts-biggest-surprise-not-to-the-houston-astros/

Astros' scouting director Kris Gross: “We think he can be an everyday catcher who provides plus defense behind the plate, really be a run-stopper out there,” Gross said. “And we think he can put up above-average power numbers and hit in the middle of the lineup.”

"If you can't figure out that Astros doesn't have an apostrophe, you shouldn't be able to comment." - Ron Brand, June 9, 2010

JJ Cooper on Korey Lee:

"Yes, we ranked Korey Lee 173....we did hear some late helium....we may have underranked him. We talked about pushing him up in the rankings and decided to stick with the rankings....blame me on that one."

Call me horribly unimpressed with the Kessinger pick, especially when Jimmy Lewis was still on the board.  Hoping they're setting themselves up to draft some overslots in later rounds, although I highly doubt they have the money for Matthew Allan.

You got me biting on "who is Jimmy Lewis?'  He is either an aging Hawaiian surfer and surfboard shaper, or the pitcher from Lake Travis.  Didn't LT make the final 4, and will he throw the Friday game?

And now Allan is off the board, to the Mets, so that's a moot question.  Really interested to see who the Astros pick...

Believe Jimmy Lewis, the pitcher and not the ageless surfer, suffered a season ending injury.  Someone (probably Cooper) mentioned it as a reason why he was probably still available last night and could be an absolute steal of a pick.

It looks like they think they have a dearth of outfielders at the short season and rookie teams.
