Kaplan:

Thornton was among the minor leaguers Houston faced a decision on before Tuesday’s deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft.

He’s played short, second, third, and left.

Bye, Marwin.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Maybe or maybe insurance. Boras May have priced Marwin out of Luhnow’s market, but I cannot believe it will be easy for Marwin to leave Houston.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Interestingly, 1.6 WAR last year exact same as Marwins (although not close to the 4 MarGo put up the year before)

Per Rosenthal:

For #Astros, acquisition of Diaz is protection in event they lose free agent Marwin Gonzalez. Team still wants to keep Gonzalez.

Strictly a right-handed player that has played a lot of SS.

As we've been tracking over here.

An absolutely terrific trade by Luhnow:
  • Acquires a player who'll be under club control for 4 more seasons (thru 2022).
  • Uses the tremendous minor league pitching depth to acquire a much-needed bat and utility piece.
  • A likely $2MM add to 2019 payroll vs an expected $9-13MM hit had Marwin been re-signed which should allow funds to be redirected toward adding a starting pitcher like Eovaldi plus a second bat.

Rosenthal has written that he thinks Cle may make Gomes available. That's a pretty good catcher.

Reports are Kluber and Carrasco available too. I get that they can probably take their division with 75 wins next season, but actively attempting to do so seems like questionable strategy.
