My wife and I went to see this Wednesday evening, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of the Lady Gaga schtick, but stripped of that and just showing off her singing (and acting), she shined. Cooper was great, too, in that he made you want to make his character stop the madness. Heartily recommended. Still trying to figure out if Cooper was actually playing his guitar parts.

Well, if he was playing, he did a good job. Most of the song credits say "Performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper", and I can believe that they did all of their own singing.

I haven't seen it but I understand Cooper did a lot of work to change his voice to a deeper resonance. He wanted to sound like Sam Elliot.

Is that movie underrated?  It shouldn't be.  The scenes in the bathroom with Tim Meadows are great.

I enjoy it, but I’m a sucker for a parody song.  The music in the movie is pretty solid the way they nail the various genres and eras.  I think you need to have seen “Walk the Line” and “Ray” to get the overarching premise.

I'm going to sneak in this thread to say that First Man is really great. I went in expecting an update of the first scenes of the Right Stuff (which would have been great) and it was that and a lot more. Darker than Apollo 13, but really masterfully done.

I feel the same way about the whole Lady Gaga spectacle, but there is no denying she has an incredible - and incredibly versatile - singing voice.  If you didn't see Gaga sing a medley from the Sound of Music at the Oscars a few years back, you should drop everything and click that link right now.  She sang everything in the original key in which Julie Andrews sang them, which impressed even Andrews herself.

Fun fact: Lady Gaga did a number of jazz gigs in New York leading up to Tony Bennett's 80th birthday.  A friend of mine from middle/high school played bass in her band for most of those gigs.  Cool story, bro.

When you say darker than Apollo 13 -  could I take 8 year old boys to it, or too much?

8 seems kind of young, but I'm not really an expert on what upsets kids. I don't think they will understand a lot of the adults talking scenes and there a lot terrifying, claustrophic sequences which would scare someone sensitive to that. If you feel comfortable explaining a depiction of what happened to the Apollo 1 astronauts then it's probably ok, but I don't know if I would.

Saw it and Bohemian Rhapsody last night at the drive-in. I thought BR was the better movie but liked them both. Lady GaGa is a much better actor than Cooper is a musician/singer but he was still good at the role. Rami Malek was really good and sorta became Freddie Mercury as the movie progressed. It can't be easy playing an icon and he did it as well as one could.

They have a triple screen drive-in in New Braunfels. The advantage nowadays is the sound is much better. Instead of those old wired speakers that you used to hang in your window, you tune into a designated FM station. Even better when the movie's subject is strong on the music. And you can bring your own beer.
