Angels @ Astros, Sept. 1, 2018
« on: September 01, 2018, 03:46:24 pm »
Shit, it doesn't seem like it ought to be September already.

Anyway some trivia for tonight's game from the game notes...

Tyler White (33rd rounder) and Josh James (34th round) will become only the 2nd pair of Astros to start in the same game after being drafted by Houston in the 30th round or later. Only other duo to do so was Darryl Kile (30th) and Eric Anthony (34th) in the 91-93 seasons.

James is the lowest drafted pitcher in Astros' history to start a game for them (Kile was the lowest previously).

(I'm guessing that there had to be some NDFA duos or NDFA pitchers who started for the Astros over the last 50+ years but whatever.)

Oswalt is the most prominent NDFA I can remember, but he was a 23rd rounder.

ETA: I'm an idiot: he was a draft-and-follow, not an NDFA. I got mixed up.

AJ's presser last night made it seem like he wasn't going to entertain any talk of Correa's struggles.   Along the lines of he got on twice,  he had a good game.

We all know that they know more is needed of Correa.  It seems as if it's Correa in the 4 hole or bust.

Great info!  It would be interesting to know how many low/late picks actually get to the majors.
Thanks, Nate!

Sandwiching him b/t Bregman and White should get him some hittable pitches - and should provide some protection for Altuve as well.

He's getting nothing but hittable pitches now.  The problem isn't that they're pitching around him, it's that he can't hit shit right now.

He won't swing, and when he does, he's late, late, late. Hence things like that weak-shit pop-up to 1st last night.

It's got to be as frustrating for him as for us to see him struggle so.
But if he's going to be in the lineup, put him in the most favorable position possible - and temporarily separate Altuve & Correa until Altuve gets out of his mini-slump.

Yes, I'm all for moving Correa down, but because they need someone in the cleanup spot who can drive in a run now and then, not because they're pitching around him.

Let's hope the line up (and the bull pen) doesn't hang this rookie out to dry the way they did Valdez last night.

It seems like Correa takes a fat pitch almost every at bat. I think that he is in a prolonged deep slump - as opposed to being injured. If he weren't right, I don't think Hinch and Luhnow would be playing him.

A couple strong hits could do wonders for him, and could ignite the offense.
It won't take much to hear opposing broadcasters saying, "Wow!  THAT didn't take long!" again.

It's not just Correa. Last year, if a pitcher was foolish enough to throw a get-me-over-fastball on the first pitch of the AB, the Astros were quite happy to punish it. They still worked a lot of deep counts, but those started because the pitchers knew they couldn't get a freebie on the first pitch. This year, for whatever reason, most of the guys seem determined to work counts by not swinging at pitches early in the count (Altuve excepted, who is happy to swing at anything, even if it's not close). And pitchers know that, so they're just throwing cookies to start an AB, and most guys start off 0-1. It's infuriating.

Calhoun...0-2...1-2...2-2...strikes out swinging
Fletcher...full count...chops to SS...beats it out for an infield hit...don't think Correa's internal clock was calibrated there

Trout...full count...walks
Upton flies out F8
Simmons...full up...strikes out looking

Assume that will be all for James...not a bad debut...needs to command better, limit the free passes, but a solid effort.

0-1, Springer gets a pitch off the plate called a strike.

0-2 vs 1-1.  Little things keep biting them,  most in their control,  some not.

Assume it was related to the collision in LF, but don't know the specifics.

He seems too far off the plate.

Altuve is always far off the plate.

The difference right now is that he's stepping in the bucket instead of at the ball when he decides to swing. And the other major problem is that he isn't swinging at hitable pitches. Regardless, Altuve either needs to be on the DL to fix whatever is wrong with him or he needs to be up there actively trying to hit the ball.

That Altuve at bat was about as bad as it gets for anyone, much less an MVP, 200 hits a year kind of guy.

At least JR James is off the hook for the loss.

Yeah, I haven't figured it out yet. I think it was hooking down and hit the top of some piece of metal on the scoreboard.

B8:

Bedrosian in for the Halos...

Kemp lines a single up the middle, nearly took Bedrosian's head off
Springer reaches on catcher's interference on a check swing, Kemp to 2B
Altuve...squares arond and takes a perfect pitch to bunt to make it 1-2...what the fuck, Jose?...strikes out looking
Bregman lines out to 3B
Correa singles up the middle, Kemp scores, Springer to 3B

Bedrosian out, Robles in

White doubles of the top of the LF wall...Springer scores, Correa scores
Reddick...0-2...1-2...2-2...full up...walks
Marwin...quickly down 0-2...1-2...2-2...flies to deep LCF, Young is there and clanks it...E8...White scores, Reddick scores, Marwin to 2B
McCann pops out F2

But the Astros take a 7-3 lead to the 9th

It’s the phone number from Hee Haw, yes an old timey number joke. I’m surprised no one has mentioned Jim’s first phone number...6

Later was HO (Homestead) 58864

I watched Hee Haw, but his reference was lost on me.

One of my bands had back to back dates once in places about 50 or 60 miles apart, places with the same owner. We finished the show in the first place and drove that night to the second town just to get there and have a whole day to do nothing. Well, nothing turned into watching Hee Haw all day and the final episode was an especially good one with Smokin' Joe Frazier and Goerge Jones as guests so of course we watched all of it. We were late, quite late, to load in and the club's manager was fucking irate. I KNOW WHERE YOU PLAYED LAST NIGHT! WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN?

Uhh, I don't know, dude, you ever seen Smokin' Joe sing Six Days on the Road before?

Both of those venues were in West Virginia, by the way.

Maybe that's why there was a Hee Haw marathon on TV.

Cool, I'm jealous... The Gibson or Harmony version?

In 1966 Buck and The Buckaroos had their instruments painted red, white and blue, an extension of Bucks innate patriotism. When these instruments were seen on Hee Haw, guitar manufacturers began making offers to him to market a guitar in those colors. Though Buck used a red, white and blue acoustic guitar built for him by Semie Moseley of Mosrite Guitars, his business sense told him an expensive model of that type wouldnt sell to the uninformed public.

He finally licensed Chicago Musical Instruments (Owners of Gibson guitars) to market a $99 acoustic model, and received a $2.50 royalty on each sold. He knew that Sears would market them but had no idea they would sell as well as they did until the first royalty check came.

"The very first statement, they sent me $15,000 he laughs. "I said, Oh, you mean THAT Sears!"

Harmony Sovereign had made a reissue of this guitar called the American Pride which sold in 2005. It was a limited edition guitar and are starting to become a collectible because of the short production run. The colors of this guitar are a little different from the original Buck Owens. Red is deeper and not as bright and the blue is deeper as well. More like a navy blue than a royal blue.

I wouldn't say he's pretty good at anything. He's serviceable at reading a teleprompter and occasionally making semi-witty quips.

Stanton is the same way.  It's not that he's an idiot or anything.  When he's asked a direct question, he has good insight.  He just never fucking shuts up in the booth.
