Angels @ Astros, August 31, 2018
« on: August 31, 2018, 07:30:45 pm »
Astros go meekly in the first:

Springer strikes out
Bregman strikes out
Altuve strikes out

No score after one.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

"Strike" 3 to Altuve was an inch off the plate.

And he never swung the bat.   Which in his case may be taken as 'at least he wasn't hacking.'

Or he's in a slump.

He went 2 for 4 yesterday, didn’t strike out.

To Preston's  point, maybe Correa should give up taking hittable pitches.

He ain't right.

My guess would be his back won't let him unleash.

I also wonder if he picks up the rotation of the ball way late.

This team strikes out a ton because they refuse to swing at hittable pitches and flail at garbage. That’s the book. Why are they the only team in the league to not see this?

If that's the case, then I agree 100%.

I'm convinced we're not going to see the real Correa until next spring.

Perhaps not. But they can’t win with this Correa hitting cleanup.

I doubt they were expecting anything more than that.

Just as I wasn't expecting Josh to swing at the first pitch meatball.

Hinch: I'd like to inquire as to the methodology you employed to secure your current employment as a Major League umpire. My curiosity stems from the obvious reality that you are very bad at umpiring.

Umpire: That hurts my feelings.

Hinch: Understandable, nevertheless the question remains. Were sexual or monetary favors involved?

Umpire: Now I feel very bad and you have to go away.

Or something like that.

That's just about the same average as Correa.

That's just about the same average as Correa.

In the month of August, Springer, Altuve, Correa, and Gurriel have combined for five home runs.

My apologies, I was making dinner and missed the the nonsense.

Just rewound the DVR to review everything that I missed, and Jesus Christ, Cooper's strike zone has been horrendous all night, and his fat ass chest puffing is pretty much vintage Joe West, which is not a compliment.

I suspect AJ wasn't leaving until he got tossed, and good for him. If this butt plug is going to make himself the show, get the fans really on him.

It's because the other guys are throwing strikes. We'll start swinging when they start missing the zone.

Fuck. The Astros’ refusal to swing is mind boggling.

I'm not a headhunter when it comes to coaching staffs, so don't think I'm trying to get the hitting coach fired.

But...

Doesn't some of this fall at his feet, if nothing else than there's a mess and it needs to be fixed?

Maybe the gameplan comes from the analytics folks, but good grief the 1st time through the lineup it was first pitch meatball after 1st pitch meatball.  Later in the counts weak contact for fly balls.

And God forbid there's a runner on 1st with less than 2 outs.

If Correa doesn’t want to swing the bat, he needs to be dropped in the order or given some time to clear his head.  It’s like he’s going up there with the mindset of only swinging when absolutely necessary.

Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

The Astros hitting philosophy is very messed up right now.  Take get me over strike one to swing at crap out of the zone on pitch two.

Second and third and nobody out  with the top of the order up.

Didn't even scratch one fucking run.

No meat in this order, straight tofu.

Blum made the point the the top of the order needed to step up when it was 2nd and 3rd and no out.  They didn't.

2 strikeouts and a popup in foul territory, well short of 1B.

Pathetic.

It’s like he doesn’t want to hit.  His first at bat tonight he drew a walk without swinging at any of the eight pitches.

According to Game cast it was a fastball right down the middle

Top/inside of the middle rectangle on the strike zone thing.

He acts like a lot of things hurt.

Noticed it when they threw to second and he dove back in the early innings.

His back still bothering him would certainly explain him being so passive at the plate.  But if that’s the case, he needs to go back on the DL.

In 18 innings the Astros have scored 2 runs.

11, according to this site, unlikely to include tonight's game.

PS: Were the BB to Bregman in the 8th and White in the 9th "effectively" intentional?
No one else is much of a threat right now.

There lineup has some hitters with Upton back, but those pitchers? Shut out in 17 of 18 innings? I was hoping we would pick up Ruth and Gehrig at the deadline. Altuve and Correa are helpless, and Yuli is not much better. That is a lot of offense to be missing.

Bregman,  Altuve,  and Gurriel need to snap out of it in a hurry.   They will need to shoulder the run producing burden (not just hits, RUNS).

And as Kalas pointed out,  if the Astros didn't have another gidp the rest of the season they'd likely still lead the majors.

If the vets are not producing, why not let some rookies have a chance?
Rookie pitchers are getting their chance: Valdez started for the 2nd time last night and James is going to debut tonight.
https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/josh-james-set-for-mlb-debut-against-angels/c-292767982

Why not see if some of Tucker's AAA hot bat and confidence can carry over some as several Astros regulars struggle.
After (almost) two SO in a row vs the Angels, what do we have to lose?

With all hitters that go through these ruts, there's always an element of being a little stiff in your actions. He's putting in a lot of work trying to get his timing and rhythm back. He's not going to come out of the lineup. I'm not going to move him.   Hinch on Correa.

Pitching around Bregman because they do not fear Altuve.  Wow.

Altuve  - 6 for 25 in last 6 games (.240) & 3 for 17 in last 4 (.176) - 9 K's in last 4 games
Bregman - 8 for 21 in last 6 (.381) & 5 for 14 in last 4 (.357) - 2 K's in last 4 games

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31662/jose-altuve
http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/34886/alex-bregman

Altuve is un-Altuve lately.  Looking forward to his return - hopefully, today.

(Added later) White - 4 & 7 for 24 (.292) in last 6 games & 5 for 15 (.333) in last 4 games - only 1 K in last 6 games
