MLB Network says the Astros and Rays are talking.

Interesting.  Does this mean they are really worried about McCann’s ability to recover from his recent knee surgery?

Dunno. Probably means they see Stassi as no more than a #2

Called this the other day just after our series with the Rays. He’s the next best catcher after Realmuto that may be available. Would like to have him if McCann can’t go. He and Stassi would be a good combo.

The fit makes perfect sense while McCann is out.  I’m just wondering how McCann and Ramos would feel about splitting catching duties once McCann returns.

I doubt anyone cares about feelings, and I expect both like to win.

I could be wrong, but I think McCann would be good with it. I believe he realizes he is nearing the end. He’s got his ring and a great career with a chance for back-to-back titles. I think McCann is the consummate team player. He would probably be the personal catcher for Verlander and Morton and Ramos would catch all others.

I don’t think you or Jim are wrong, I was simply thinking out loud.  Also, I would love to see the Astros go get Realmuto or Ramos and let AJ deal with the clubhouse dynamics.

Pick 3: McCann, Stassi, Gattis, Ramos.

This year?  McCann and Ramos. Going forward? Ramos and

I think this is McCann’s last season. Yes I realize that’s only two.  I don’t consider Gattis in the mix.

I think McCann knows where he is, career wise.  This is his, I believe 3rd procedure on the same knee in the past 24 months, and that's not counting draining and cortisone.

I would love Realmuto, for now and the next 2 years, but he will be ridiculously expensive to acquire.  I'm hoping he does not get dealt this year and the Stros go after him hard in the winter.  Ramos and McCann in September+ sounds great to me this year.  Gattis 3rd unless they get another DH type, Stassi 4th as insurance.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

I asked because if McCann comes back before September there’ll be a roster issue.  If McCann doesn’t come back before September then roster space is not an issue.  Instead it would presumably come down to post season rosters, if they make it.

If he doesn't come back before September, he can't be on the postseason roster anyway, right?

Players on the DL at August 31 are still postseason eligible.

Thanks, I spazzed out and forgot about the differing treatment for injured and uninjured players.

Technically, players who were in the org but playing in the minors until September can still be added to the playoff roster if somebody on the 25-man goes on the DL. For example, let’s assume Cionel Perez gets sent back down soon, comes back up in early September and blows lefty hitters away for a few weeks. Let’s say in mid-September Will Harris gets hurt and can’t pitch. Perez could then be added to the postseason roster as a “replacement “ for Harris.

That’s what happened with K-Rod back in 2002; I think he pitched more in the playoffs than he had in the regular season that year, since he was a September call-up.

I could very well be wrong but I think you just have to be on the 40-man roster before September to be eligible for postseason. I believe this is how david price made the Ray's postseason roster after being a September call up

Adalberto Mondesi made his first Major League appaearnce in Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. He made his Major League debut in a regular season game *after* playing in and winning a World Series.

You have to be in the organization on August 31st and on the expanded roster at the end of the season to be eligible. Players on the DL are also eligible except those placed on the 60-day after August 1st. That’s not everyone on the 40-man necessarily, though it could be. However, anyone in the organization, whether non the 40-man or not, is eligible to replace an injured player.
