DSL Astros 2018
« on: June 04, 2018, 11:07:20 am »
The DSL Astros started play this weekend.  This year the Astros have just one team in the DSL.  There is plenty of youth on the team.
Goin' for a bus ride.

He was discussed briefly in another thread, but 17-year old Heitor Tokar, a 6-foot-6, 256-pound righthander from Brazil who got a $300,000 bonus last July 2, is on the DSL squad. In the very early going, he's 3rd in the DSL with an 0.59 WHIP and 7th in ERA at 0.59.

Now leading the league in both WHIP (0.43) and ERA (0.39).

Good grief. Does he need to get his WHIP under 0.30 to get promoted to the GCL?

That is a huge percentage of base runners he has allowed to score. Needs more work.

Anyone else envisioning a roster with Beer & Tokar on it.  Headline heaven.

The Astros named their DSL player and pitcher of the month for June.

The pitcher wasn't Tokar but instead was 19-year old righty Ernesto Jaquez (signed for $95K last year out of the DR) who "...allowed just one earned run in his 21.0 innings pitched in June for a 0.43 ERA. In five total games (2 starts) during the month, he went 3-0 with 24 strikeouts and just six hits allowed for an .087 opponent batting average. Jaquez ranked second among all DSL pitchers in ERA during the month of June, and led the league in opponent batting average."

Player of the month was 17-year old Victor Masai. Also know as Victor Coutinho, he was signed for $100K in 2017 and described as the best hitter coming out of Brazil that year.

18yo RHP Manny Ramirez, another #AstrosSleeper to follow.  Three-pitch FB/CB/CH mix with FB up to 97, pwr CB at 84, and feel for CH. @DSLAstros #Astros

22yo RHP Jojanse Torres, another #AstrosSleeper to watch.  Three-pitch FB/SL/CH mix with FB up to 98, pwr SL at 89, and developing CH. @DSLAstros #Astros

Ramirez is listed at 5'11" 170 lbs with a 25/5 K to W in 20.2 IP and a .189 BAA against. 6'2" 175 lb Torres K/W is 16/2 in 14.1 innings. The latter is in his first professional season while the former is in his 2nd year in the DSL.

Even more dominant thus far in July and hasn't allowed a run in his last 24 innings. Leads league in ERA and BAA and 2nd in WHIP.

RHP Alfredi Jimenez was named short-season pitcher of the month by the Astros. For July, he pitched 19 innings w/o giving up an ER and allowed just 8 hits and 2 walks while whiffing 22.

For the year, the 18 year old has a .158 BAA and a 49/8 K to BB in 39 innings. Signed for $50K last year out of the DR.

Just like previous pitcher of the month Ernesto Jaquez, gets the promotion stateside to the GCL.

DSL wrapped up play today. The Astros' mostly non-existent offense was led by OF Victor Mascai who hit .259/.336/.388. 18-year old catcher Jose Alvarez, signed for $195K 2 years ago, showed little pop but ended the year with a .359/.434/.420 line. On the much more impressive pitching side, two of the more notable hurlers (Ernesto Jaquez and Alfredi Jiminez) were transferred midseason to the GCL. 17-year old righthanders Heiter Tokar (0.76 WHIP) and Franny Cobos (0.80 WHIP) likely show up stateside to begin next season. Johanse Torres (1.07 WHIP, 48 K/8 BB in 41 IP) will as well, age notwithstanding (23) but his stuff was highlighted by Oz Ocampo and taken note of by BA.
