A J Reed
« on: February 20, 2018, 04:46:59 pm »
I just read he came to camp 25 pounds lighter. Of all the Astros minor leaguers, including Fisher, Reed is the one I hope the most will realize his potential. LH-power as a DH and backup 1B. Yes, please.

Yes!  Him turning into a solid player could really help.   Like you mentioned from the DH role this year, plus some 1st.  It would provide backup if Fisher flops, too.

Here are pics of the thinned down Reed.

He is still a pretty big boy.

An effective AJ Reed would be a great thing.  Gattis is gone after this season and the Astros are going to need a DH.  It would be so much better to have a cheap home-grown player than to have to pay an aging free agent.

I wonder if Hinch's talk of moving Yuli around this season could portend a potential spot for AJ?

Maybe so. I just hope he hits like he has shown he can. If so, I think he’ll be the LH DH.

Or prepare YULI to be Marwin 2.0 in 2019.

This was the first thing that came to my mind. Marwin however is what, 4 years or so younger than Yuli? In my opinion, not that Yuli is showing signs of slowing down, Marwin’s age and ability makes him more suited to that utility role and he should be resigned at years end.

I’m hoping this speaks more to Reed. Would be nice to have a left handed thumper who could hit 25-30 bombs and bat .260ish or better. If he’s gonna hit .215 and strike out 30-35% or better he can go back to AAA.

As I recall he was a third baseman? I can't imagine him playing 3rd now, much less SS.

A contract agreement has to work both ways.  If Marwin has a repeat year, some team will offer him $10M+ per year for multiple years AND a full time job.  I'd guess he'd like to play every day more so than a super-utility role.  Just a hunch though.

He does play every day. Just not in the same position.

Apparently all I'll get to see are a bunch of second string players. Man am I disappointed.

True, but please give a report about how Armenteros looks in person. His numbers have been really impressive in the minors. Hope he gets spring off to a good start tomorrow.

What is the “Gose route?”

Speaking of Gose, has he pitched?

Ankiel went the other way. Did not know Reed was a pitcher.

Reed was 32/104 in AAA last year. Come on, man. You have a real chance.

Yeah, Reed was Kentucky’s Friday starter and put up excellent numbers his final year - that and the dingers got him named college player of the year by BA. I think he was regarded as probably a 3rd/4th round “talent” as a pitcher, as opposed to 1st/2nd as a hitter.

Ok, just looked up his BA draft report. Reed led the SEC with 12 Wins as a Junior, and had a 2.83 ERA over his 3 years at Kentucky. But, BA said “He's likely a fifth-round talent on the mound, with an 88-91 mph fastball and three fringe-average secondary pitches.”

I certainly hope he makes it as a hitter. That LH power would be nice.

those are not encouraging samples. Reed is make/break as a hitter.

Today was another poor day for Reed. On the other hand, Tucker and Davis are hitting like they want to hang around for a while.

Tucker's homer was off a pitcher who's never pitched above A-ball.  Ditto White's double.

True, but they still deserve the pat on the back and the recognition. The troubling thing is Reed is missing that same pitching.

I spent much of yesterday convincing myself that Tucker was going to leave camp with the team and start the season in LF.  And then sanity hit me and said, even if Tucker had the greatest spring training in the history of spring training, the Astros wouldn't call him up for several weeks so that they can control him longer.

But Fisher is having a pretty decent spring himself.  So maybe Fisher starts the season in LF and if he isn't performing the Astros can bring up Tucker.

I am fairly confident that the Astros aren't going to sign Carlos Gonzalez so the team is going to fill the position internally.

As for Reed, it feels like he's been passed by Davis and that either Davis or White would be a better option for the Astros at first to open the season.  I don't think its particularly realistic to think that Guriel is going to be ready until May.

Hinch thinks Reed not getting a September call-up last year may have contributed to or convinced him to get in better shape.

I think you add Jon Kemmer to this list too.  He's 6 for his last 8 with two home runs after starting the spring 0 for 10.  That puts him 2nd on the club to Tucker in OPS this spring among guys with any meaningful number of at bats.

But like Tucker there's no way he breaks with the team.

Don't know why I thought he was still 19. If you spend more than two seconds thinking about it, it's pretty clear that there's no way he's 19, since he wasn't drafted last summer. I'll chalk it up to an increasing reluctance to acknowledge aging.

Reed was “sent out” today, Hinch said on the postgame. He did not have a bad spring, but that seems to be it for Reed with the Astros, and he should ask respectfully to be traded to give him a better chance to play. Hinch said versatility and production are what he wants, and Reed is only a 1B.

Yep. Hinch mentioned their versatility yesterday.

ETA: LF remains an issue, imo. Fisher, like Reed, has done nothing this spring to take over the job, and the club deems Tucker not yet ready. Luhnow all but said Tucker will be up this year so maybe the plan is to limp along at that position until they are ready to bring Tucker up. He will be playing some LF wherever they assign him. He had 4 HRs and 17(!) RBI in big league camp.

Finally, I wonder if Luhnow has called SD about Brad (is this his first name?) Hand? Sipp could be released.

I think they’ll keep Tucker down to June to avoid Super 2 and then LF is his.

I feel a little bad for Reed. He lost 25 lbs. and hit .298 with a .511 SLG. Just no room at the inn for him. Maybe he will go to AAA and tear it up and be attractive in a mid-season deal.

I feel a little bad for Reed. He lost 25 lbs. and hit .298 with a .511 SLG. Just no room at the inn for him. Maybe he will go to AAA and tear it up and be attractive in a mid-season deal.

That’s just it: there was room for him. Scout’s repeated comment about him was “He is blowing it.”
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Reed? You mean despite pretty good spring numbers, he was blowing it in other ways?

The spring numbers were ok, but that is all. The scouts look at more, much more, than batting average.

I had such high hopes for Reed...he's at Redding-level in my mind, just constantly frustrating.

What exactly was frustrating you about Reed this Spring?

You seem to think Reed had a good spring. If the Astros thought so, he would still be in the big league camp.

Would it be fair to say that Reed had a good spring, but the Astros didn't think it was good enough?

Hinch has specifically noted his lack of versatility as a problem for him making the roster.

...which is a construct of this team more so than anything else.  I'm guessing that, with his talent and his performance this spring, he'd make 20+ MLB teams breaking camp.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Don’t know where ok stops and good starts. He hit in spurts.

He's a lardass with what looks to me to be hand speed issues.

All I'm saying is that I've had high hopes for him since he was drafted, a fixture at 1B/DH type of guy.  Oh well, can't win 'em all, and to be fair his career is way far from over.

Yea, that's always going to be somewhat of a problem for a LHer that is a big man slow afoot. Maybe he should work on being a southpaw out of the pen. THAT would be versatility.

His FB was topping out at 90ish at Kentucky, for whatever that's worth.

Apparently not worth much.

Somewhere I read he was rated as a 5th rounder as a pitcher prior to the draft. Seems like if they can't trade him, he'd be worth a look at as a pitcher.
