world series stuff
« on: November 07, 2017, 08:08:46 am »
I am curious to hear about what kind of Astros stuff people have bought after the series.  And if someone found something really cool and unusual, I'd love to hear about it.

So far, my purchases have been pretty routine.  I bought a hat and a shirt.  I also bought some commemorative stuff that the Chronicle was putting out, the special SI issue, and some stuff that Topps has on their site.
Boom!

I have not purchased anything myself, but Mrs. Hawk bought a tshirt.  I have a feeling I'll have a few Astros-related items in my stocking at Christmas this year.  If I were to buy one thing right now, it would be one of those hats with the Trophy on the front, like the players wore in the parade.  Those are sweet lids.

I went to Academy about 5 minutes after the last out, and was there until 3:30am.  Line was boisterous and orderly.  Someone wandered over from HEB with a cart full of beer, and just handed them out.  The only thing they sold out of was the on-field hats.  Got a fistful of shirts, and a pennant.

I tried going to MMP on Thursday to see if it was any less crazy, but the line was all the way from the Union Station team store to 59.
Drinking for two.

my daughter (who makes ME look like a casual fan) has purchased a t shirt for the division series, a pennant t shirt, a ws shirt, a Astros won the ws shirt, a ws Christmas  ornament, a ws calendar, and a ws magnet. She is waiting for the family reunion trip to Houston next month to buy more when she makes a pilgrimage to MMPUS

I bought a hoodie and have a hat coming in the mail.

I also bought a couple of world series champions pint glasses, hopefully those can stand the test of time. Plus the beer never tasted so good.

Ordered the SI 2014 issue,  will get the 2 current issues hopefully without having to order them.

Ordered some stuff from MLB, can't remember all but Some hats, a Christmas ornament,  and I think a shirt.

Big purchase will be an authentic WS Home Springer jersey.

And as I told my wife Wednesday night,  it going be easy to Christmas shop for me this year.

I also ordered the christmas ornament. The white one so it will stand out on the tree.

You should have gotten that game-worn Verlander jersey.  Sure it was $4,000, but you only live once.

I decided before the series I'd pick the MVP if we won. Works out because for whatever reason I think Springer's 4 looks the best on the home jersies.

After the ALCS I was leaning heavily toward Verlander.  I'm not sure everyone (OWAers excerpted) appreciates how important he was to this team and that run.    So I could be talked into a JV.

The only store that carried Astros WS gear in Lafayette was Lids, of all people. So only a hat for the moment. I'll probably order a couple of shirts this week.

And, in other news, the Dodgers, uh, dodged a bullet. If they had won they would be wearing championship caps in Giants colors.

I haven't bought anything yet, mainly because my mom went a little nuts and has bought me 8 t-shirts this postseason (and I doubt she is done). My favorite so far is the orange WS champs shirt.

Got online the night of game 7 and got more than I️ should have (overzealous) but the main things I️ got were the hat and shirt, a WS program, a pint glass and a blue, H-Star hat with WS Champions on the side.

I bought a white Springer jersey when I was there for a game in August. Was a tough decision but he's always been a favorite. Turned out OK I guess.

One of the commemorative pictures I saw was a shot of  McCann jumping into Morton's arms.  I like it because both of those guys played so well.  Morton especially resonates because he seems so humble and humbled by the whole thing, like he didn't realize he was capable of being that good.

I also like the shot of Gattis in a tearful embrace with a teammate.   Get a little misty when I see it even now.

We picked a good group of guys to follow.

The McCann/Morton thing was particularly cool because they were teammates in rookie ball with the Braves in 2002.

One of my favorite parts of the otherwise god-awful TV coverage of the Victory Parade was when they showed the mounted policemen getting selfies taken with Gattis and their horses.  Hilarious.

was watching kvue (austin) and they talked about the merchandise out there that is fake, misspellings to declaring the Astros world champs instead of  World Series champs.  I know this group is way to savvy  to buy a tshirt on sale somewhere on HWY 6, but I was amazed at the number of people who had. Almost as amazed at the amount of non Stranger coverage they are giving the Astros now they have earned the title.

The QA/QC at the mlb shop is not what I'd like it to be. I ordered the grey WS champs shirt online because I couldn't find it in Austin.  The trophy is misaligned. My Houston Strong shirt also had the same problem. I'll live with it, but I'm irked.
My dilly dilly shirt has not arrived yet so I'm hoping and praying it is not also screwed up.

Had a similar experience.  My gear arrived fine, but the shipping label was hand-written and the box was poorly taped together.  For a site that no doubt does tens of millions of revenue, it was shockingly rinky dink.  It looked like I'd bought something from eBay.

Probably because MLB had to rush to have Astros shirts printed given that they're were supposed to lose to NYY.

Had a similar experience.  My gear arrived fine, but the shipping label was hand-written and the box was poorly taped together.  For a site that no doubt does tens of millions of revenue, it was shockingly rinky dink.  It looked like I'd bought something from eBay.

My hat and pennant arrived yesterday.  The hat was fine.  But the pennant is just poorly made and the trophy is hardly visible with the orange background.  Everything just looks better on the website.

So, I just ordered this shirt on Etsy.

Give me the number and the security code on the back, and I'll solve your "available credit" problem.

You're welcome.

After the ALCS I bought a World Series shirt that the printing is a bit off-center. I'm not too concerned as everything else I've received is in good shape.

I have a pennant on the way and it better not be shit.

.

Which pennant?   They've got 1 oriented vertically and I've seen others going horizontally.

My hat was also good.  Only issue is 'one size fits most' means a too tight fit for me but I figured that would be the case. I'll just clip the elastic in a few places.

link for WS hallmark ornament

When Mrs. Hawk saw that, she rushed out to order hers.  She has well over a thousand Hallmark ornaments.  That is no exaggeration.

I can barely see the trophy in that pic.  Good luck.

That's what I'm saying.  And in real life, its even worse.  So I'm going to have to get another pennant.  What galls me is that the other pennants are a lot more expensive.

I'm thinking about this one:

Did any of you order the "front page" from the Chronicle from the day-after? It is supposedly a glossy "suitable for framing".  Wife ordered it and they charged our account November 3rd and that's the last we have heard from them.

On 11/3 I ordered a copy of the paper and the book they published but I haven't received anything yet. I checked my confirmation email and there is tracking info for the shipment from 11/22 but it hasn't gotten to the post office yet.

Check you confirmation email to see if there's any word.

The Astros got some nice walking-around money as part of their playoff shares:

Houston Astros (Share of Players’ Pool: $30,420,155.57; value of each of full share: $438,901.57) – The Astros issued 60 full shares, a total of 9.23 partial shares and four cash awards;

I was still a bit drunk and ordered the Glossy front page, the entire paper and then went to SI and ordered the original 2014 WS issue.  got the glossy front page, but not paper or the magazine yet.  I remember seeing something about high volume sales and shipping may take a bit longer than normal.

The 2017 World Series: Astros vs. Dodgers
TONIGHT, 9:00 PM ON FS1, 2 HRS 2017

Astros vs. Dodgers
Chronicling baseball's dramatic seven-game Fall Classic between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros, the first matchup of 100-win teams since 1970.

This was on the other day and I saw it for a few seconds. They were playing WS clips and interviewing the players, etc. It looked a little bit better than a clip show.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

Just finished the FS1 show.  Overall well done.  Some extra camera angles not available on the broadcasts a la NFL films and some cool behind the scenes clips.

Springer in BP before game 2 was particularly cool.

And (SpoilerAlert) the celebration after game 7 was so cool.  Lots of I love you's.

Many,  many more cool moments. Only complaint is game 5 got a little compressed but understandable considering time constraints. Game 5 deserves its own documentary anyway.

My favorite was the segment on the last out of game 7.   The shot from behind Altuve is one I hadn't ever seen.  I have watched the replay of the last out about 7,393 times, Altuve fielding the ball, cocking the ball and firing the it to Yuli, then Yuli putting hands on head mouth agape.   From the angle behind Altuve you see Yuli's mouth WIDE OPEN as soon as Altuve releases the ball.  Also the setup to that last out, with Hinch running down exactly what he was thinking, running through every player in the field and their positioning and just needing  one more damn out.

We had a thunderstorm in Metroplex last night that coincided with this show. After Game 2 I completely lost picture because I have DirectfuckingTV. I've searched the network FS1 schedule through the listings posted and can't find it. Will post if I see it listed.

We had a thunderstorm in Metroplex last night that coincided with this show. After Game 2 I completely lost picture because I have DirectfuckingTV. I've searched the network FS1 schedule through the listings posted and can't find it. Will post if I see it listed.

Impossible.

Read online that this show is the official MLB video that will be released on dvd soon so if you missed it all is not lost.

Hopefully FS1 will re-air it.

So tonight is Kris's book club, so I was looking for something to watch on tv and the MLB world series video was on sale on Apple tv.  I bought.

Is it as good as the Series?  Naw.  Is it pretty good?  If you get through that without either joy or tears or both, I'll buy the beer.  But you'll have to drink it on your own because I surely don't want anything to do with you.

Thanks, Neil. It hadn't occurred to me to search for this. Since we no longer bother hooking up a DVD player to the TV (and don't own a BlueRay), I wasn't sure whether to buy a copy or not. But we have Apple TV, so that's perfect.

Now, I just have to decide whether to rent it or buy it...

I think it was $3.99 to rent, $9.99 to buy.  I suspect I'll watch it again, so I'm glad I bought.

Have any of you that ordered something post-Series from SI actually received it? I ordered the issue just after the WS ended and have not rec'd it nor do they respond to any inquiries at their "Customer Service" phone. There is a reason I put Customer Service in quotes as it is a fucking joke. I have also written to their "Customer Service" email and they don't respond.  I suspect they farm all of this out to a 4th World Country. Just wondering if anyone has actually rec'd what you paid for. I will stick a fork in my eye before buying anything from jokers again.

We ordered the WS issue and the 2014 reprint during the week after the WS and received both within a couple of weeks. I'm beginning to think we got unusually lucky.

I finally got my WS Documentary Bluray/DVD combo. I ordered it on 11/2 when obviously it hadn't been created yet so it's nice to finally have it.

A nice feature is the ability to download a digital copy to play on your computer, phone or tablet.

No, the 8 DVD/Blu-ray is different. The one I got is the documentary that aired on MLB earlier. It has some extras too, like season highlights, milestones, etc.

I thought about getting the games package but i already have movies of all the games I want to see (the wins).

I can't believe you people are wasting your money on an 8 dvd set so you can watch the games with different announcers.  Incredibly stupid.

Where'd you get it?

Speaking of (kinda), has anyone gotten their Blu-Ray yet?  I ordered in about 15 minutes after the series ended and it's the only thing that I haven't gotten yet.  Don't know if they haven't finished production or if I just haven't gotten mine.

Is this the 2-hr. documentary that was originally aired on FOXSPORTS1 and is now in rotation on MLB network? If so, my only complaint is that it was only two hours. It's excellent.

I was born in Houston. My family had lived there for 6 years or so, but moved back to North Carolina when I was a month old - my dad had finished law school at U of H and got a job in NC.

So my dad, not having any strong prior franchise affiliations, had become a big Astros fan while they were living in Texas. I started really getting into baseball in 1986, when I was 7. Pretty good timing to fall in love with the Astros. Through the years it's been a big thing for my dad and me.

A lot of baseball fans in NC became Braves fans, or Cubs fans, because those were the only teams you could watch regularly on TV when I was growing up. Suffice to say, aside from liking Ryne Sandberg I never gave a fuck about either team.

Thanks for the story. One thing baseball can occasionally  be great at is bringing fathers and sons together. Even when sometimes it seems like it is the only thing you have in common. I wish my dad had been here for this great ride. It will give us something to talk about when I join him.

Mark and I saw five of these games together: NYY 1 and 2 and LAD 3, 4, and 5. He had unavoidable conflicts for the other four in Houston or would have seen all nine home games with me. We watched LAD 1, 2, 6, and 7 together on TV. Game 5 for me, as it was for most everyone, was an unforgettable experience, which was much more meaningful for me because we shared it. I think he and I have more in common than the Astros, but this season and those postseason days were so much more special for me because the two of us shared the moments then and in many conversations since. He does not talk about such things with me, but when my life nears its end, I will consider these days among the best I spent with a son who has never been anything but a joy.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I need one of those. Where did she get it?

She got it at Kroger, but you can order them online.  They're 50 bucks, though.  I'm sure that's 6 bucks for the wine and 44 for the commemorative bottle.  If you buy 10 bottles at Kroger (and who ever buys less than 10 bottles of wine at a time), you get a 10% discount.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Just ordered. Very, very cool. With deference to the BBG’s, we’ll all be cracking these open in early November 2018...
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Drinking for two.

It didn't come with a digital download card like the Documentary did and I haven't seen any options for digital download.

I'm in the process of making disc images of the Blurays so I can watch on my laptop when I'm traveling.

If like me you could never quite work out your MLB password at the same time you wanted to order the 7-disk blue ray set, it's available on Amazon for $50.  https://www.amazon.com/Houston-Astros-World-Collectors-Blu-ray/dp/B075DSL4BC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1518455640&sr=8-3&keywords=astros+world+series+2017
