ALCS Game 7
« on: October 21, 2017, 12:35:48 pm »
I am excited beyond belief.  Through Jim's generosity, I am ready to witness history.  I was so excited last night I couldn't sleep...after the game.  I am drinking a Love Street and smoking a Jericho Hill box pressed maduro on the back patio, just like I did yesterday before heading to the yard.  Another Love Street and a Macallan 12 at 1820 to calm my nerves before meeting Jim and heading inside for another Love Street and taco.  No detail is too minor.

I went to bed at 1 and woke up at 5 with absolutely nothing on the agenda for the morning.

Buddy of mine lis driving down now with his 13 year old son.   Kid has no idea what he's in for.

Excited for them and all of you who will be there to open up a can of Orange Whoopass.

It is hilarious to see the lengths to which HH (and Mark last week) and I go to do exactly the same thing we did on a day we won.

If we will hit the ball and score a few runs, I like our chances. Morton has to be the pitcher he can be, not the pitcher he thinks he is.

I just can't replicate yesterday. In addition to two servings of Frito Pie, I had 4 Hopadillos, 2 Lost Golds, 2 shots of Tullamore Dew 10 year single, and a large supper of grilled  zucchini and yellow squash, a green salad, a 14 ounce NY Strip, with a finish of Chocolate Coffee ice cream and glass of Port. Today I switch the steak with salmon, only have one serving of Frito Pie, and pray to the BBGs for their compassion.

I think if Morton can go five innings with two runs or less, we have a good shot at it.  If Morton falters earlier, it may be a long night.

+1.

I am so excited I can’t even think straight.  Many of you know that I am a foster parent with a long history of staring at the effects of the underbelly of our society. One of our girls is in in-patient care with visiting hours from 6-7pm and, while I will be fully present for our visit this evening, I’ll have the 8pm start time of tonight’s game firmly in 2nd place in my thoughts this evening. It’s funny, a game 7 barrier to the WS for my favorite team for the last 39 years is an exceptional balm for the troubles of this world. I am thankful for what the Astros have done this year and I am thankful for being able to share it with y’all.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Here's hoping the 1 and 9 spots do some table setting.

Springer got on base last night and had the gem at the wall. Hopefully those positives germinated overnight.

Josh has had a string of tough ABs.  He'll come through.

I like sliding Bregman up and Reddick down.  Bregman really looked confident yesterday and Reddick needs a lower pressure spot for the moment.

I have no idea what Ehlinger was thinking there. There's like one thing you *can't* do in that situation, and he did it.

If the Astros lose, it shouldn't be with Reddick on the bench.

It must be hard on Beltran sitting out the last two games.

I'm envious of all you lucky bastards who get seats inside the ballpark.   I suggest earplugs.   I was there for the home run derby when Berkman was blasting and the place was absolutely deafening.   I hope they turn down Buck's mike and turn up Smoltz' mike and the field mike.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

One question for those watching at home, did ESPN show a replay Judge's catch?  It was a very good catch live, and at the game they showed the replay on the scoreboard.  I figure though that ESPN probably forgot to show a replay.

Funniest moment for me was when he led off an inning  later in the game he made a first pitch out so quickly they had to show the replay as he was settling back into the dugout.

ESPN replayed it a few times, probably had it marked for the victory montage that they never got completed.  In fairness, it was a pretty nice catch, I try really hard to dislike the guy but he doesn't give much to work with.  Dude plays hard and if he hits a wall or the ground, he just gets up and gets on with it without any fanfare.  He may turn into a first class yankee prick, but I don't think he is one right now.

I liked Judge.  How he handled the kid on the Correa home run showed an enviable decency.  He was poised and dangerous, and his at-bats were always great fun.  It annoyed me that he got booed.

Yep.  Not his fault how the media handles things.   he is only in charge of how he handles himself and he does that greet well.  Heck, I even like the dudes wearing the judicial wigs.  That's some funny stuff.

Fan of Judge, hate the Yankees. I saw him in ST hit a homer that left the stadium so fast that I drafted him that evening for my fantasy team--figuring at the time that he would hit 35-40 homers but only hit around .200. Like a Joey Gallo type. Judge was so much better than expected.

I didn't like the booing people did of Judge.  The kid didn't deserve that at all.  Cheer when he makes an out because hey, it's an out.

I also didn't like the Didi sucks chants that were in my area.  Me and the guy next to me started the Let's Go Astros.  Neither of us wanted to be like Yankee fans.

That dude next to me also had the best meme I've seen in a long time, sorry Judge, but it was the Brokeback Mountain pose with Buck and Judge.  It was just funny because Buck is stupid.

This is not a Yankees team to hate.  They have good players, and aside from Frazier, all seem to be good guys.  I like Joe Girardi a lot.  I liked him as a player and as a manager.  He will take way more than his fair share of criticism because he's in NY, but he's a good baseball man and a standup individual.

In the postgame interview, Girardi's voice was breaking and getting real high-pitched, and he was close to tears. They were asking about his contract expiring and does he want to come back, and he was barely holding it together.

Girardi went to an office in the Astros’ clubhouse, waited out the celebration on the field, and stayed to congratulate Hinch and say he hoped we’d win it all.

Hinch said it taught him a lot about how he wants to carry himself.

Judge is going to rip your heart out and stomp on it someday. He seems like a reasonable nice young man, otherwise.

There are plenty of reasons to hate the Yankees, they're still the entitled Yankees. A few decent players can't change that.

I echo all these thoughts about Judge and Didi. Both are very talented, and by all accounts, Judge is a great person.

In his game 2 presser they asked Giardi about having the umps look into the Correa slide.   He just said (paraphrasing) " yeah I asked them to look,  (shrugs shoulders) I didn't see any interference you just ask them to look. "

We have all seen managers who would have sworn up and down it was interference,  thinking that bitching in the press somehow would get them more calls down the line.

He's a class guy,  good baseball man.  I thought Farrell's comments after the ALDS were likewise classy and I was sorry to see him fired in such a predetermined manner.   If Giardi doesn't come back I hope it's his choice.

I don't think the broadcast crew ever mentioned it, but on the Bregman throw to the plate, Bird cleated the shit out of McCann's wrist. When McCann points at Bregman after the play, it looks like there's blood all over the wrist beneath his glove.

That was one of the most amazing throws I have seen.   So perfect Gary Sanchez might even have caught it.

So I'm in NY for work and I told a client after Game 5 what pissed me off the most about the Yankees/Astros series was that we had the better team at almost every position.  I said there's only 1 Yankee I would trade straight-up for: Judge (I love you Reddick, please don't ever change).
I went to his house to watch Game 7 last night and apparently he told his teenage sons what I said before I got there.  I conceded the bullpen issue quickly, but once they started in on Gary Sanchez/Brian McCann I stood my ground.
Then he caught The Throw and then he hit The Double.  I've never looked so smart in my life.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

If I were a Yankee fan, I’d have serious serious concerns about Sanchez’s yips on outfield throws.

Looking at the replay I'm sure some of the pressure was Bird trying to get his foot down to find the plate.   But he may have given McCann a little extra past the plate as he came to a halt and got up.  McCann didn't seem to mind.

As for blood,  didn't see anything clear after the play.  Did see a big pile of dirt on McCann's arm on a still of the tag.

I don’t think Bird did that, at least not intentionally. They seemed to be a pretty classy bunch.

I agree, I don't think there was anything malicious on that play.  Bird slid straight into the plate, and McCann's glove was there and it carried Bird's foot for a bit.  Just one of them things.

There are tickets on astros.com right now: http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/MLBEventInfo?orgid=50510&agency=ASTV_ALCS_PUB&pid=8467933

I saw the above where ALCS game 7 tickets were available hours before gametime.  Does anybody know: did it not sell out early or they released more late in the process?

I am returning to Houston this weekend for my first visit since 2005 NLCS game 3, and trying to figure out the best way to track down a ticket to game 3 or 4.  I had been assuming it'll be a StubHub type entity, but any wisdom is welcome.

Also, as my 212 posts in 18 years following this site would suggest, I may not be too talkative, but if there is a place I can go to drink a beer and watch you all yell at each other, I'd love to know what that is.
Yay.

I thought Bird might have been trying to dislodge the ball from McCann's mitt, which would be a completely legitimate maneuver.

I don't think he had time to even think that much.  The ball, the mitt and Bird's foot just all ended up at the same spot at the same time.

Speaking of, does anyone know where to get archived radio broadcasts of the games?  MLB At Bat only has video and I can’t find anything on the AM790 site or iHeartRadio.
