August 31
« on: August 31, 2017, 06:46:06 am »
I wish I had a way to scream at Luhnow to get Verlander.

I have seen enough of Fisher and Davis. 3B is resolved with Correa's return, but I do not know what the do about LF unless they put Marwin there most of the time and Reddick there when Jake plays. I assume days off do not mean much from here on.

I too wish I had a way to scream at Luhnow. I think they need to make a move just to change the atmosphere and dynamic around this team. I did not realize until I heard it on the radio coming to work this morning, but the Astros have not won 2 games in a row SINCE THE ALL STAR BREAK!! I know we have had injuries but so have other teams. I'm really concerned and think Verlander could help, not only this year but going forward. Not holding my breath though. I know Jeff loves his toys in the minors even though most all of them have no where to play next year but the minors.

I agree with your second sentence very much. This team has not been the same since the trade deadline. I don't see any evidence, though, that Verlander is available.

He definitely is available. They cannot agree on a price.

I was watching a little of the Detroit game yesterday. Verlander on the mound in Colorado. He was very good. 6IP, 3H, only run was a Blackmon HR. He was seen in the dugout after his removal showing a trainer a shoulder. It was not the rotator part of the shoulder but the back/neck part of the shoulder. I don't know if that is why he was removed.

This is not true.  They won back to back games on July 21 and 22, 24 and 25 and August 15 and 16, 18 and 19.

They haven't won MORE than 2 in a row since the all-star break.

Verlander feels like a pipe dream but i would love to have him. Then wait until midnight and sign Aoki stick him in LF and the 9 hole and watch this team take off.

All predicated on if the BBGs allow it of course.
Unga bungaed by the BBGs.

I can be superhopeful that Maybin is being acquired because Fisher is being dealt as part of a package for Verlander.

Me neither.  I know a million years ago, Hunsicker used to put everyone who wasn't named Bagwell or Biggio through waivers, just because.

I'm wondering why the Angels jettisoned Maybin. He played a lot for them this year and reasonably well. Looks like a good move if it means no more Fisher.

What is a main purpose of a deep and talented minor league system? Are we going to win the WS with Kuechel, McCullers and pick two of Morton, McHugh, and Fiers plus the bullpen we have after roster adjustments?

So if that is the Tigers final offer, would you say yes or no?   I lean no, would hate to lose both Whitely and Tucker, but I get the arguments about striking while the iron is hot.

I like the Maybin pick up.  Costs us a spot on the 40-man roster and $1.5M, but thats it.  I gotta believe the Astros are among  the worst base running teams in the league and this gives the team a legit PR option.  If its a 7th reliever or a PR on the playoff roster, give me the PR who can create havoc on the bases.

Now lets pull off a Daz Cameron /Rogelio Armenteros  for Verlander and 25% of his salary deal and call it a day.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

The Angels got Upton for Grayson Long and a player to be named later or cash. Upton has an opt out after the season that he told the Tigers he would exercise due to the rebuilding effort. If GC was interested in upgrading LF, they could have had Upton for what appears to be very little in return, and likely very little long term risk.

What would be Grayson Long's comp in the Astros organization?

If he's on a good team, I'd say he's more likely to opt in. So if you're gonna trade for him, you need to be willing to take his money long term.

If Beltran is not brought back, Fisher should be in an open competition for the one open lineup spot heading into 2018. And the Astros have Kyle Tucker in the minors who will be pushing for a starting spot in the next few years.

If they acquired Verlander, the Astros would have control of him through 2019 unless they would rather give him an opt out now to not take on as much future salary.

Facing midnight deadline, Detroit Tigers likely to wait to trade Justin Verlander http://on.freep.com/2vvxmQ7

--------------

Makes sense, unless someone just blows them away with an offer, aka 2 top line prospects, plus others.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

The #Astros have the top prospects, but aren't offering them for #Tigers Verlander. The #Cubs willing to pay the money, but thin farm system

The #Astros have the top prospects, but aren't offering them for #Tigers Verlander. The #Cubs willing to pay the money, but thin farm system

Luhnow could add a Britton, or a Gray, or a JD Martinez or even a Verlander without mortgaging the future.

Now if they want Whitley and Tucker.....fuck em.

Luhnow's probably influenced by two things:

His experience with the Cardinals, which taught him that if you just stay in contention every year, good things will eventually happen. Of course most teams in that situation won't have the same luck in the postseason as his Cardinals.

His boss, who's been crying poor like he's auditioning for the lead in Oliver Twist. Luhnow may be hoarding prospects to hedge against a possible teardown in a few years. This is especially true after Harvey. Nobody knows yet what that will do to attendance and other revenue.
When the Clark is dead, Spack will eat his spleen. Before he dies, Spack will put his posts under the knife so the Clark will see his threads wiped out forever...

Sure is a lot of panic around here, and ingratitude towards a GM who has far surpassed almost everyone's expectations. Verlander or not, they are capable of winning it all this year, thanks to an apparently clueless GM.

According to MLB sources the #Astros are on the verge of landing pitcher Justin Verlander in a trade with the Tigers.

Added note says: According to MLB sources, the Astros are on the verge of landing pitcher Justin Verlander. Sources say the teams have agreed on players and money and are now working through the medicals and getting MLB approval.

I'll need to see some bona fide documentation before I buy into this. As far as I can tell, this is still just speculation.

It's likely her fault he rejected the trade. Apparently, he's narrowed his desired teams to Chicago or LA.  She probably didn't want to live in Houston.

Both narratives suck, but I hope it was nixed by Verlander and not Lunhow having 2nd thoughts.

The apparent alternatives would be that Luhnow got cold feet given the prospects going the other way or that Crane nixed it due to salary. I don't see either of those being the case. Why would Luhnow push for something and then back out at the last moment? And why would this get to the last possible minute (almost literally) without Crane's approval?

It has to be that Verlander said no.

The first report from Detroit was either Luhnow got cold feet or Verlander said no.  The follow up was clarification that it was Verlander saying no.

The Detroit beat writer's previous tweet said Verlander was responsible for nixing the deal.  His latest tweet now claims it isn't clear whether Verlander nixed the deal or the Astros got cold feet.

My guess is that he put the second tweet out there to cover Verlander, whom he has a good relationship with.  Or Verlander asked for concessions to waive his no trade clause that the Astros weren't willing to grant.

Agree. I'm assuming that Peacock goes back to the pen and that makes a really big addition back there. If LMJ is totally healthy, I'm guessing Morton stays in the rotation and Fiers is the odd man out.

Do we know if Verlander added the opt-out clause to his contract when he waived the no trade?  Or is that pretty much automatic?  Per the latest CBA he had that right.

That's what I was hoping and thinking based on the terms of the deal that we know.  Just wondering if there has been confirmation anywhere.

Poor Jim's not going to know about this until he wakes up at 4:30.

3:30. I woke up to pee and foolishly looked at my phone. I saw the At Bat notification about the trade. I tried to go back to sleep, but here I am, a little after 4, drinking coffee and reading the TZ thread from after I gave up and returned to my book then sleep. 4 am and reading about a baseball trade. I told you I am addicted.

ETA: I have a mild case of whiplash reading folks change the narrative from "Crane is cheap and crying poor, and Luhnow is a gutless incompetent" to "OUR OWNER AND GM ROCK!"

This has to be a tremendous shot in the arm for our players, and let's hope Correa comes back strong, and we surge in September. Maybin will help too, and I hope Fisher is the PR/5th OFer, not him. I also hope Verlander did not add the opt out and he apologizes to someone for saying no to the trade even temporarily.

I think the only remaining question we have is does Biz still go after Kate or what the dilly-o?

How am I supposed to deal with this kind of whiplash? Now I have to see if I can reconcile things with my wife..

Outside of the obvious talent upgrade, I can only imagine the shot in the arm this is to the clubhouse.   The guys absolutely have to be ecstatic.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Go ask Keuchel. He seems to speak for them. Which with his status should be expected.

Except James Hoyt.  Everybody's celebration basically is a message to him that they can't win with him.

Sometimes the numbers are what they are. Hoyt has done some good work out of the pen this year. He had struggled lately and had options but he'll be back and help this team win some games down the stretch.

Right, but on August 1 everyone seemed really concerned about Hoyt's feelings with regard to Keuchel and Reddick's disappointment that a trade wasn't made.  Nobody gives a shit now and rightfully so.

Hoyt's feelings? Who ever cared about them other than his near miss making the team after a very good spring? I agree he was very good out of the pen early and will be back.

I don't think that's the message at all.  If Hoyt thought he was a difference maker, he's less self aware than I ever thought.

I don't think it was necessarily Hoyt's feelings as much as the disagreement about Keuchel and Reddick(?) going public with their disappointment.  Which led to a discussion of teammates interpreting Keuchel's bitching as saying the guys in the clubhouse weren't good enough.

That was me.  I was betting he didn't say to the players' faces that they should be replaced by better players.

Yeah, I don't think any of the players were implicated individually, just like being happy about the trade shouldn't implicate anyone individually.  I assume the expanded September roster will prevent any player being moved off the 25 man (though the fineries of roster play often escape me).

There is no more 25-man roster.  Everyone on the 40-man is eligible to play in any game.

Via Tigers Twitter: To complete the Justin Verlander trade, OF Juan Ramirez has been acquired by the Astros as the player to be named later.

Good thing Avila didn't get the memo about walking away when Luhnow asks for a guy in the low minors.
I had forgotten about the PTBNL so this is a nice surprise.
