Fish-Slingers at Astros July 17, 2017
« on: July 17, 2017, 07:49:35 pm »
Quick summary:
Astros' dick-stepping gives 'Slingers a run in the 1st. A couple of hits and a sac fly gets the run back in the bottom of the 1st. McCullers settles the fuck down and retires the side in order in the 2nd.

Astros at the plate 1-1 in the 2nd.
He breezed him, one more time!

At 46 pitches now after 20-some-odd pitches in the 1st inning.

And Jake unloads to give the Astros a 2-1 lead!

Making shit 0-2 pitches, walking the number 8 hitter (after having him 0-2), giving up scorching doubles in the gap to the 9 hitter is not the way to beat them.

I suspect he damaged the left thumb ligament. The kind of injury you can sometimes play through but it is easy to keep re-tweeking it., Needs about 4 to 6 weeks of inactivity to actually heal up. He'll probably deal with it in some fashion for the rest of the season.

If it's the injury I'm thinking of, I've have the same thing numerous times, and yeah, it hurts like hell for about 10 minutes, but there's not much you can do about it.

Did Altuve chase? I am in Minnesota.

No.  Took two fat pitches, then swung through the third.  A hanging slider right  in the wheelhouse.  A good pitch to hit, he just didn't.

BTW:  Baseball does not have "playoffs". They have "postseason".  The Stro Poll needs to get with the program.

Segura made the first out of the inning by making a diving stop and throwing across his body while on his ass to nip Marwin at 1st by about 6 inches.
Then he fielded a ground ball hit right at him by Aoki to throw Reddick out at the plate.
Then he went deep in the hole and threw all the back across his body to nip McCann at 2nd by about a foot.

And now Sipp is throwing batting practice.

Threw out Marwin at 1st on a close play, threw out Reddick at the plate, and the play to nail McCann at second.

The need for a credible LHRP is real.

It's more than that. They need to upgrade about four pitching spots. Hopefully Keuchel and McHugh can take care of two of those. But Devo hasn't been sharp lately, and he needs to pitch a little less. You never know whether Feliz will have any command, and in spite of Sipp's last few appearances being ok, Sipp is still a long ways from inspiring confidence.

The play at the plate was routine, but the plays on Marwin and Bregman were definitely not, especially the diving stop and throwing out Marwin from his knees.

The play at the plate was routine, but the plays on Marwin and Bregman were definitely not, especially the diving stop and throwing out Marwin from his knees.

Yeah that one play was routine, I guess I meant that Segura was responsible for keeping the good guys from scoring the winning run.

I'm trying to imagine what August is going to look like at this rate...

Well, the bullpen will be walking around with their arms duct taped to the shoulders

Not getting much out of bases loaded situations either.

Why not squeeze with Aoki?

I know we are going to lose some, but this one bothers me.

I'm as concerned as it's possible to be about a 62 and 31 team.

Well, that was a pretty disappointing outcome. Hopefully the Mariners' pen is now stretched thinly enough that they'll cough up a bunch of runs tomorrow night. Because we'll probably need a bunch. Maybe Peacock can give us more than 4.2 innings.

I've noticed that other teams have one guy who they can bring in the last inning and simply blow hitters away.  I bet there's a market for that.

Why not squeeze with Aoki?

And they were holding Yuli at 1st, too. If Aoki drags a bunt, there's not a thing they can do to prevent the run. I was sure that was what they were going to do.

They coughed up a bunch tonight.  And if Peacock can get through the 5th, it'll be a major victory.

The Mariners are on a bit of a comeback stretch lately. I think they've had a bunch of em in the last week.

I'd honestly rather this shit happen right now and plain for Luhnow to see rather than two weeks from now. There will be some acquisitions made.

We've got the "simply blow" part down.

I know we are going to lose some, but this one bothers me.

They've been on tilt since the fourth inning of the first Twins game. The Sunday win was a gift.

I just hope tonight's performance by McCullers was a result of the extra long rest throwing him off and not a sign that he's still not right physically.

He doesn't even have to drag it.  If he simply puts the ball in play the game is over.  Perfect opportunity IMO.

If Luhnow picks up a quality starter and a quality bullpen arm at the deadline it will be quite the coup... and I'm not sure it will be enough.

All the people who are currently nicked up and/or rehabbing will have to be healthy.

I think it will. With McHugh and Keuchel back and two acquisitions this is a remade pitching staff. Now if injuries keep taking a toll then no team can survive that.

Eta: I think we're on the same page. Missed the second half of your post for some reason.

In other news... Valencia is starting to become a Jim Edmonds type player to me... irrational aggravation.

Also, I'm out in the Portland OR area. Astros blacked out for me so I just had to meander to the nearest pub. Listening to the Seahag broadcast (what I could hear) you'd think the M's are knocking at the door of the division. Plenty of BBG taunting... we'll see if it went unnoticed.

No. Can't get mad at that kind of defensive ability.

Valencia whines like Edmonds and also tortures the Astros like Edmonds.

Watched the highlights of both plays. Don't know how he got Marwin unless Marwin was not busting his ass down the line because he thought it was through. Anyone but McCann or Beltran would have beat the force on Bregman's ball.

Dammit. I have a hangover from that game.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

The ball Marwin hit was already past Segura when he caught it.
