Greeneville 2017
« on: June 20, 2017, 04:35:14 pm »
They had their meet and greet with fans last night so rosters should be posted soon.

Notice the BP hats the manager is wearing.  That is the Gville mascot Gizmo who is supposedly relative of Orbit.
Always ready to go to a game.

And the roster has dropped.

Aside from the 2017 draftees, notable names include:
  • OF Gilberto Celestino--signed for $2.5MM back in 2015, the 12th-ranked Astros prospect split time between the DSL and the GCL last season.
  • INF Enmanuel Valdez--signed for $450K in 2015, he's making his stateside debut after spending 2016 in the DSL.
  • OF Wilson Amador--signed for $400K back in 2013, he spent 2016 (mostly) in the GCL.
  • RHP Juan Robles--the 19-year old Mexico native split 2016 between the GCL and Greeneville and has put up some fine numbers in his two years in the system (82 Ks vs 28 BBs and 63 hits allowed in 81.1 IP).

2 1/3 scoreless innings for 23-year old Cuban pitcher Jesus Balaguer in his US debut with 3 whiffs and no walks. Last game experience was in the CNS back in 2014-2015. Over his 3 years there, walked a ton (59 in 68.2 IP).

It can't get any worse: this year's 22nd rounder and Horn-ex OF Patrick Mathis has whiffed in each of his first 5 ABs.

19-year old lefty Francisco Villegas has yo-yo'd back and forth this year already between the GCL and Greeneville is back again with Greeneville. Off to a nice start with 12 Ks vs 0 BBs and just 4 hits allowed in 11 IP.

If you ever pass exit 23 again, take a detour about a mile off to Yoder's market.  It is a Mennonite market. Best made to order sandwiches around.

Hope you get a chance to see a game at Pioneer park.  It is a great venue.

Two pitchers showing some impressive numbers so far this year:

Hansel Paulino - he has found some control.  His WHIP last year in 42 1/3 IP was 1.42 (42 H/ 18BB).  This year, in his first 20 2/3 IP, he has a WHIP of 0.87 (14 H/4BB).  If he keeps this up, he could be in Tri Cities soon.

Leovanny Rodriguez - He started the year in Tri Cities and was shelled.  He has found success in Greeneville.  in 17 IP he has allowed 13 hits and just 1 walk (WHIP 0.82).

Both of these guys are 21 so they are slightly above league average in age.  Both are among the leaders in ERA in the league as well.

In movement news:  Peter Solomon was moved from the GCL roster to the G-Stros roster.  He has yet to appear in a game.

Paulino with a very good outing last night.  5 2/3, 4 H, 0 R. 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5K.

Start was wasted as the offense only mustered 3 hits and the pen gave up 13! runs in the last 2 innings.
Always ready to go to a game.

39th rounder Colton Shaver with a jolt for the 4th consecutive game (a G-stros record, apparently), giving him 6 homers in 16 games.

20-year old DR pitcher Bryan Abreu now with 39 strikeouts in 28 IP this season to go along with a sky-high 17 walks. Over last 2 outings however: 15 Ks vs just 1 BB in 10 IP.

After a 2-26 start with 13 strikeouts, able to finally put things in gear and is hitting .438 (21-48) over his last 13 games.

Righties Leovanny Rodriguez (1.80) and Hansel Paulino (2.78) are 1st and 3rd in the Appy in ERA and 2nd and 3rd in WHIP (1.06 and 1.11, respectively).

17-year old RHP Jairo Solis promoted from the GCL, his second promotion this season after starting the year in the DSL. Youngest pitcher in the Appy and 2nd-youngest player overall.

Per McTag tweet the Astros will leave the Appy League.  Per Jacksonian post this must be due to Duman's absence from Greeneville.

I would guess they are dropping to two short season teams. GCL & NYPL. The majority to teams just have 2.

This news is sad for me. Great memories. I would expect another team will put an affiliate there. My guess is the Twins moving from Elizabethton.

It also probably means a shorter leash for marginal "prospects". BA is reporting 4 releases this month: Maikel Sepulveda, Reini Beltre, Francisco Villegas and Martin Figueroa.
