The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

It is a Bizarro world when you find comfort in Fiers taking the mound.

Is that 643 foot home run Mantle supposedly hit a credible distance? Is that distance accepted as true or is it apocryphal?

It's generally accepted as true.  It's the only "verified" 600-ft home run.  Not entirely sure how they measured it though.

It's obviously just such an outlier to the other moon shots that have been recorded that it frankly seems impossible.

The ball cleared the roof at Tiger Stadium and landed in the lumber yard across the street.  I'm not sure how they determined where it hit though.  Lou Gehrig was rumored to have hit a 600-footer in an exhibition game at Clark Field in Austin.  The ball cleared the 40-ft fence 400 feet from the plate, went over the street, and landed in some grass up another hill.

That's an interesting piece, Sphinx, thanks. It basically confirms my suspicions that 640 feet is about 100 feet farther than any human has ever been able to hit a baseball, and that up until fairly recently most distance measurements were not scrupulously scientific.

I mean, if a guy like Springer hits a ball absolutely as far as he can and it's 470 feet, how much farther can a ball be hit? The answer appears to be that a handful of monsters and/or genetic freaks have been able to hit a ball, I don't know, maybe another 70 feet.

Every home run I ever hit was at least 700 feet.  Every fish I ever caught weighed 10 lbs, easy.

I've never hit a grand slam, and I've never hit two home runs in a game.  Time has pretty much run out on both of those accomplishments.

It seems so.

A rotation of "Fiers, McCullers, and pray for the others" is not enough to win in the playoffs, but maybe it can suffice until help arrives from the DL or trade.

T8:

Marisnick stays in the game to play CF, Springer to RF, Reddick to LF, Marwin to 1B

Revere reaches on an E6
Young strikes out swinging
Valbuena, pinch hitting for Pennington...chops a perfect double play ball to 3B, but because the Astros didn't want a fielder within 70 feet, it's a single, Revere to 2B

That's all for Fiers, Devo in

Double steal...Revere steals 3B, Espinoza, who pinch ran for Valbuena, steals 2B...no more double play in order
Simmons grounds out 6-3, Revere scores, Espinosa to 3B
Calhoun strikes out swinging

Angels get an unearned run, but Astros clinging to 2-1 lead

Fiers is the man. Since his almost demotion he's been a solid starter.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

Devo is so remarkable. Multiple inning workhorse, a "get us out of this shit" specialist and he might one day be a stud closer.

Correa needs to atone for his two GIDP and run-costing error...

Funny thing is, he may have hit dp #1 harder than the RBI single. Hopefully it's a sign he's snapping out of his slump.

Wow...what a job by Fiers...a bloop single and an infield chopper, both would have been outs without the shift.

How'd you get your sofa near the bullpen?

Be careful next time. The stadium staff might think it's a sandwich or worse a bottle of water.

Selection bias. You hardly notice the plays where it works.

Is that 643 foot home run Mantle supposedly hit a credible distance? Is that distance accepted as true or is it apocryphal?

I read "the last boy" some years ago by Jane Levy. She includes a chapter that covers The Home Run. I don't remember the details other than it certainly wasn't nearly as far as lore contends.

I've never hit a grand slam, and I've never hit two home runs in a game.  Time has pretty much run out on both of those accomplishments.

I never pitched a no hitter.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
