The Astros DL now has Keuchel, Morton, McHugh and Musgrove on it.

Astros players on needing and hoping for more pitching help;

Correa:  Honestly, with the talent we have in here, and the way we've played, anything less than getting to the World Series would be a disappointment...I really believe this can be the year....I think we need one more guy, a No. 1 or No. 2 type of guy in the rotation, and another reliever. We get that, it would be a dream come true. And I think Jeff is going to get it done for us. I really do. This is the year.

Keuchel: Usually you get one shot at this....We've got plenty of talented guys in here, so it's not to say we couldn't win a World Series right now, but pitching wins in the playoffs. I'd like to see us get somebody who can dominate...so if we're going to go out and get somebody, I'd rather get somebody who's a proven winner and who can dominate a game.

Sean Pendergast speculated on going after Cueto or Bumgarner if the Giants continue to flounder.

I'd move both for MadBum. But that's a pipe dream.

Oh, hell yes! He is hurt though. That would be like adding Randy Johnson in 1998. Would it be a rental? That matters to me re who SF gets.

Bumgarner has club options for 2018 and 2019 for a team friendly $12MM/year. He would be more than a three month rental. But the word I've heard is that the Giants have no interest whatsoever in moving him and are interested in signing him to a long term mega deal. That could be changing though.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Astros have a 1 and 1A in the rotation right now.   My wish is a really good #3 and some bullpen help, ideally under control through next year.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

MadBum is my dream trade target, assuming his medicals check out, but he's not going anywhere. One of my good buddies is a sports exec in the Bay Area (not with the Giants, but has good insights generally in sports due to connections), and he said it's "really, really doubtful" the Giants move Bumgarner but that Cueto is almost certainly going to move. Cueto would high on my list of targets for the Astros. He will likely not cost a ton in terms of prospects because he would be a rental (he has an opt out after this season, which would give the Astros flexibility longer-term financially and more time to assess younger, internal SP options), and he has demonstrated first hand to the Astros that he can be dominant in must-win playoff games.

I'll defer to the Bus Ride guys, but it seems to me the "younger SP options" are on the team now--Paulino and Martes.

Cueto will be on the list certainly, but he would not be at the top for me.

But if he doesn't exercise the opt-out then he's owed $21mil/yr through the 2021 season.  I'm not sure the Astros are going to go for that.

This is correct.  No one in AA is likely to be mlb-ready at the start of 2018.

Per MadBum's baseball reference page: 2017 Contract Status: Signed thru 2017, 6 yrs/$35.56M (12-17) & 18-19 team option

And per this site, the '18-'19 team options are at $12M/yr.
  • 2018-19 Club Options include $1.5 million buyout
  • 2018 option guaranteed with 200 IP in 2017 or 400 IP in 2016-17
  • options increase to $14M with top 3 finish in Cy Young vote 2012-17 or to $16M with Cy Young award 2012-17
  • limited no-trade protection (may block deals to eight clubs)

I'd say the Astros would be happier than a pig in shit with those terms, but the Giants would require a king's ransom in return.

EDIT:  I see now that you were talking about Cueto's contract.   Sorry!

Yes, Cueto has an opt out after this season, which many think he will exercise. If he doesn't, the team is on the hook for about 4/$84mm IIRC. The worst case scenario would be that he is acquired, sucks and/or injured and doesn't not exercise his FA option.

Back to Keuchel... Pinwheel says he is not throwing for a week to let the nerve calm. Missing 1-2 more starts possible.

That has month written all over it.

Interviewed on the pregame show Keuchel said he felt discomfort the other night and didn't want to push it. He wants this over with so they don't have to revisit it later in the season. A week of non-throwing and then they will see how it feels. Could push it if they needed to but wants to get it past him.
