Oh, Correa, what are we going to do with you?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Oh, Correa, what are we going to do with you?

The blind spot re Correa is a major problem.

Lowrie with an upper decker...enjoys every second of his extended trip around the bases. Hopefully he reaches home before tomorrow.

He was supposed to be this generation's A-Rod.
I worry sometimes that he'll be this generation's Joe Charboneau.

He's not Charboneau, but he sure ain't ARod either. He can be a productive player, but he's an 8 or 9 hitter right now.

Why the fuck would Sipp be an option in any game that's within 5 runs?

Would you overturn Joe West? I suspect he'd throw a fellow ump out of the game for doing that.

I don't know if I've ever seen a Major League hitter as completely lost as Correa is.

We've seen lots of them. It's just that none of them were #1 overall picks.

I feel like you're forgetting the early 2010s Astros.

I'd have to put a vote in for 2007 Morgan Ensberg. Although that may have been more of a "yips" thing.

Just walked a career .058 hitter. Outstanding.

I'd have to put a vote in for 2007 Morgan Ensberg. Although that may have been more of a "yips" thing.

This could be a "yips' thing too. And that's scary as hell. If that's what it is, he'd have a better chance of coming back from both ACL's torn at the same time.

Naaa. He was on a mini 5 game hitting streak before this, hitting an at least respectable .318ish. He's clearly pressing with runners on. I'm in a career that deals in yips more than any other. This shit  manefests in a repeatable mechanical flaw that the "user" can't stop doing. I don't see that here. He's a young kid (yips are also rare at a young age) that was rushed to the majors had early success and early slumps and then had a non existent spring training. That was bad for him. He's just pressing in points of stress and not letting himself "see the ball, hit the ball".

Honestly, the "yips" are a pretty silly term used by the world of sports to describe a commonly diagnosed issue in music called "Focal Dystonia". Feel free to check it out on the interwebitubes. I think Steve Sax had FD as did Rich Ankiel, and now John Lester throwing to first. When the FD happens to an unknown player nobody even notices. It's the established players that make it stick out. When you repeat a specific action over and over and over again neural pathways can break down for some people causing them to have to relearn basic muscle functions. If you don't know wtf is going on and your profession calls it "the yips" and it's framed as a mental defect then you press on and keep making the problem worse instead of taking time off and finding a new way. It's very complicated and still needs more research but the classical music world could probably teach a lot to the sports industry about it...

Having said that, I've seen FD and what it looks like. I've seen the same shit in baseball players. Correa is fine.

Interesting. Thanks.

I hope I'm not boring people with this shit...

When Ensberg was "right" his swing was fluid. When (in my non doctoral opinion) shit got off he started uncontrollably locking his hips. Even if he was fully aware and was being coached to stop doing it I don't think he had a choice. That's FD/yips.

This is the same Morgan Ensberg that is like the Astros psychology coach or something?

This issue is not a "flaw" like say hoarding magazines or obsessively eating buggers because mommy wasn't nice... its just a simple breakdown of a neural pathway. When it happens to people it's scary as hell. You spend your whole life doing something without thinking about it and then poof... a catcher can't throw the ball back to the pitcher unless he does it underhanded. Throwing to second? No problem.

Often times people that go through this can learn a shit ton about their approach and mental toughness. This isn't a psychological problem but rather a physiological issue.

I could be way off base here but it just seems so similar to what a fair amount of musicians (and some of my closest friends) have gone through.

I had forgotten Morgan is now managing in the Astros low MiL system. Not sure how that developmental role worked out for everybody. It has to be a tough thing to measure.

I think y'all are making to much of this shit.  The problem, as I see it, is that Correa is simply not swinging at pitches he can hit.  It has nothing to do with locking his hips, or muscle memory, or neurological triggers, or or eating boogers.  It's approach.  He's taking good pitches, getting behind, then hacking.  He has to be more aggressive in the strike zone.  Go up there looking for a pitch to hit and whack it.  It's not *that* hard.

I clearly said Correa doesn't have any larger issue. I simply thought people might find the yips discussion interesting.

Also, how is Joe West still a big league umpire? He's terrible, bitchy, and a massive dick.

Since replay was implemented, West is the only ump I've seen actively lobbying the guys in NY to uphold his call.
