From High Heat Stats:

The rest of MLB has taken an extra base on a ball in play 286 of 677 times (42%).

The Astros have done so 4 of 30 times (13%).

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

They've also taken a whopping three bags this year, while being nabbed five times (which leads the majors).
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

What is the definition of "taken an extra base on a ball in play?"   Is it 1st to 3rd on a single or scoring from 1st on a double?

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

There is no formal definition of "taking an extra base", but it usually means advancing beyond where you normally would without the benefit of an error.  So going 1B to 3B on a single...scoring from 1B on a single...going to 2B on a single without there being an error.  Those kinds of things.  They are noted in the scorebook.

Scoring from 1st on a single would be two extra bases. I saw Willie Davis do it once.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Oops...yeah that should be scoring on a double.

I've seen it when the guy on 1B is running on the pitch.

Davis was one of the fastest in his day.

I remember Vince Coleman doing it three or four times in 1985, but always with Coleman running on the pitch and Willie McGee trying to stretch a single to RF into a double and getting thrown out at second. It was like a thing they had.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Altuve score from 1st on a Carlos Beltran "single" off the wall at some point this year.

I've always wanted to see someone (like Billy Hamilton) score from second on a sac fly to deep center that leaves the cf off balance

Amazing!  I've crossed two off my bucket list. Saw Luis Gonzalaz hit for the cycle live awhile back then saw a no hitter by Arrieta in Cincy recently.

As obscure as that play might be I'd love to see it someday.

My number one bucket list baseball moment is to see a live game 7 World Series game. Can't even imagine it.

I have seen this twice: Stanford did it against UT in a regional, and one of my Brenham player did it in a playoff game.

I want to say that Willy T did it once for the Astros. Does anybody else remember such a thing, or is my memory playing tricks?

Good example from last night.  Bregman was moving on the pitch since there were two outs.  RF'er cut the ball off before it got to the wall but Bregman was still able to score from first because he was going all the way (and watching the 3rd base coach).

I know Michael Bourn did it.  I've found the video online before but can't track it down.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Slower.  McCann or Beltran?

I also remember that.  But I also remember Sinbad starring in a genie movie called Shazaam in the early 90s.

Yes, Davis was running, but it was a routine ground ball single over second into CF.
