This team might be worst bunch of baserunners in the history of baseball. What the fuck are you doing, Carlos?

It is an absolute disgrace. I have seen more base running fuck ups in a week than you might expect to see over the course of an entire season.

On the other hand, the early returns on Morton are positive.

After once through the lineup, the Astros "take fat fastballs down the middle and run like idiots on the basepaths" game plan is  only showing moderate success.

Dyson's slide was exactly the same as Marisnick's the other day that was ruled illegal.

Dyson was a little closer to the bag, but otherwise you're 100 percent correcto.

Can't keep pitching out if bases loaded jams. 2-0 M's, still two on with one out

Altuve has tapped back to the mound more the first week than he has in his entire career combined.  He's squaring up nothing.

Attabioy Correa...take strike 3 with bases loaded. Next pitch Beltran pops up to end the innging. Way to earn it.

Precisely.  4-4.

I know Altuve and Correa will ultimately get it going.  Bregman, too.  I'm worried about Beltran (turns 40 this month), Reddick (multi-year deal after poor 2016), and Gurriel (this has got me really worried - expensive multi-year deal for 1b who bats 9th and who we don't expect to hit home runs.  Huh?).  Always knew Gattis was very streaky.

If Beltran hits more than .220 with more than 10 HRs I'll be shocked.

That would be a calamity. The Astros sure do get a lot of credit and buzz for their so far unrealized potential. I worry that Jeff Luhnow has yet to make an acquisition that moves the needle. I also was confused that there were no staff changes in the off-season. I hope they make these conversations look silly, of course. They probably will.

So 8 games in;

2 spot - 1 RBI
3 spot - 0 RBI
4 spot - 2 RBI (both on Opening Day)
5 spot - 0 RBI
6 spot - 2 RBI.

That's a grand total of 5 runs batted in almost 200  at bats.

I'm not worried about this team hitting. I do worry about Gurriel, but if he can't cut it, there's plenty waiting in Reed/White/Tucker/etc. to take his spot.

Good lord that's horrific. Of course it would be helpful if the bottom of the order was getting on base to be driven in when the middle-of-the order is up. Don't know the stats on that but it's probably not a good number either.

The on-base percentages of 1,2,3 are .306, .257, and .258 respectively.  I'm more concerned about them.

But since you pondered, Gurriel .125, Reddick .261, Marwin .409, Aoki .357, Marisnick .300.

Number of runners left on base:

Bregman - 8
Altuve - 16
Correa - 15
Beltran 14
Gattis - 9
Gurriel - 14
Reddick - 14

That's 90 base runners left on and 4 driven in by that bunch (yes, Bregman, Altuve, Correa, Beltran, Gattis, Gurriel and Reddick have *combined* for a grand total of four RBI).

I'm too lazy to look this up, but it seems like we're traditionally a slow-starting team. Last year the offense was OK and the pitching was atrocious in April, the year before everything rhymed beautifully for a month, but usually we come out of the gate sputtering. What really gets my goat is the awe-inspiring number of stupid mistakes we make. That doesn't feel novel this year. It just feels like Astros baseball in the A.L.
