Mariners at Astros, April 5, 2017

Probably some lineups somewhere
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Is anyone seeing velocity on their feeds? All I see is the pitch count. From what I gathered it was the velocity that got people excited this spring. I'd like to know where he is.

T1:

Segura...quickly 0-2, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2...singles to RF
Haniger grounds to SS, Segura out 6-4, but too quick to turn two
Haniger swipes 2B
Cano...down 0-2...strikes out swinging
Cruz grounds out 4-3

No score.

Not sure, but Segura was tardy as shit on a 3-2 fastball, but just punched it over the 1B bag.

This might be a quick one.  Doug Eddings is finding strikes behind the dish.

That Correa strike 2 was at his shins.

I like it.  You'll never hear me complain about a big strike zone as long as it's consistent.

No, he moved to 106 this season.  He's right there somewhere.

Milo would be enthusiastic in this interview.

Since I've been to Riel, this description made me oddly hungry for pierogi and hangar steak with a maple old fashioned.

If you bring a sign to a baseball game that cannot be hung on a rafter that does not impede anyone's view, you are lower on the fan totem pole than the wavers, albeit only slightly, imo.

If you bring a sign to a baseball game that cannot be hung on a rafter that does not impede anyone's view, you are lower on the fan totem pole than the wavers, albeit only slightly, imo.

If said sign references "Houston, we have a problem" in any way, you should be beaten with that sign until you are, quite simply, dead.

Bregman doubles to LF corner, Dyson tries to apply kickball rules to Springer at 3b, but he's safe.

B3:

Marisnick pops out F4
Springer strikes out swinging at a pitch that bounces in front of the plate, but reaches on a wild pitch
Bregman doubles to LF, Springer to 3B
Altuve...3-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch in the dirt
Correa flies out F8

Astros still 0 for 2017 w/RISP

No score

He gets into those little spells every now and then.  It seems right now he's trying to hit a home run most times he's up.  He'll get in the groove soon enough, I'm sure.

As MM said, it's MLB at bat but you need to add the radio package for 19.99. For that cost, all MLB games can be streamed on radio and you can choose your preferred feed. There are no blackout/market restrictions for the radio.

I just realized these Mariner jerseys have bedazzled numbers.  Like crying, bedazzling has no place in baseball.

I know.  I'm not going to give up on him yet though.

Nothin to motivate like being behind.  We talked about this on OD...how the Astros seem to be able to score runs late.  Gonna need that now.

All fast food, mass produced burgers are middling at best and have appeal based almost solely on nostalgia. I have no problem with consumers having burger loyalty founded on memories of their youth, but those who choose to argue his or her nostalgic memory of a burger is better than someone else's is, at best, a nuisance.

Then Shake Shack must be 37 orders of magnitude worse than McDonald's because In-N-Out is absolutely, positively "eh, if there's nothing else within driving distance".

I've tried Shake Shack twice now, and would absolutely, positively prefer a Quarter Pounder.

Despite the sad flail to end it, I thought Altuve's last at-bat was pretty good. He fought off some tough pitches.

At Shake Shack? They are classic crinkle cut, so I guess depends if you like that. I think In N Out is 100x better than McDonalds, but their fries aren't even close.

As long as it's academic, we're all good. I'm still trying to calibrate though where an "Alyssa Milano sloppy BJ" falls on the 0-10 scale of appeal in which Rachel Ray, Sandra Lee and a bottle of Crisco is a 10.

I had In-N-Out in Fort Worth once, it was absolutely mediocre.  That was in comparison to the 20ish times I have had it in LA, it was always great out there. Fresh food and motivated employees go a long way.  As compared to the inner loop Whataburger schleps, who mostly are in a bad mood and get your order right about 2 times in 5.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Sandra Lee???  What the fuck????  That'd be like fucking Kellyanne Conway.

You're right, wasn't it Giada? I wouldn't mind watching her make me crinkle cut fries and a thin ballpark burger in a spaghetti string top, so long as she had the decorum not to kneel at my table when she took the order.

Doesn't in-n-out have pretty different ingredients/produce for the cali and TX locations? I seem to remember that expansion was an issue because they typically only sourced beef and produce from certain butchers/farmers, and logistics made it difficult to deliver those fresh to new markets. That might also explain some of the difference.

Nothin to motivate like being behind.  We talked about this on OD...how the Astros seem to be able to score runs late.  Gonna need that now.
We compared this lineup to 2015. It's the 7th, that's when that team turned it on

Dodgers using laser markers to position outfielders.

Wow.  Ok, I missed that one.  More efficient than to keep waving them over, I guess.  Thanks.

They were using laser rangefinders then actually marking the field with paint before the game.

So they would mark the field differently for each batters?

Knowing he can throw a mid 90's fastball has got to be hell on the hitters when that change keeps coming.

And after six straight balls, Springer grounds into 5-4-3 double play.  So diaz threw 7 pitches, one of them within 9 feet of the plate and has two outs.  Awesome.

Bregman with a routine grounder to SS that Segura throws into the dugout.  Bregman in scoring position for Altuve...

I thought I saw it clocked at 95.

I know he hit 95 earlier in the game.

Reddick with a leadoff double...Aoki should be bunting

Smart play by the RF to let the foul ball drop. Pays off as Segura snags a smash by Springer.

I hate bunting with a guy on 2nd and no outs, especially with a guy that Ks a lot on deck (Springer). Reddick is fast enough to score on most singles; why not give Aoki a chance to hit a single and win the game?

Because you want that runner at 3B with less than two outs.
But you're giving them one out already, and then you're depending on Springer to hit a deep enough fly ball. After that you've lost all the advantage of the bunt, because with 2 outs you still need a single to drive in the run.

I just think, unless your first hitter really sucks at hitting (Aoki doesn't), you're better off giving your guys 3 shots at hitting a single. Especially since, as we saw, a successful bunt is not a given.

But you're giving them one out already, and then you're depending on Springer to hit a deep enough fly ball. After that you've lost all the advantage of the bunt, because with 2 outs you still need a single to drive in the run.

No you don't.  From 3B you can score on a fly ball, a ground ball, a wild pitch, a balk...lots of ways.

Quote
I just think, unless your first hitter really sucks at hitting (Aoki doesn't), you're better off giving your guys 3 shots at hitting a single. Especially since, as we saw, a successful bunt is not a given.

Aoki is four times more likely to make an out than to get a hit.  Productive outs are important.

This offense already has my 2016 Spider Sense tingling. They still appear to be at a loss about what to do if the ball stays in the ballpark...

Yeah, I am aware of all the possible ways a run can score from 3rd, thank you professor. By the way, I think your math might be off on Aoki.

Peacock gave them a chance.  Was really referring to Devo pitching his balls off and getting nothing to show for it.

Really hoping we get a walk off win, just to see McCann scold the entire team like a schoolmarm.

What a game.  What a GameZone.  Throw some cold-ass water on this motherfucker, and let's hit the sack!
Was a lot of.... fun? Stress? Anger? Yeah

And the Rangers starting the season 0-3 after blowing today's game in the 9th.  Minus the Ric Flair tribute, what a start to the season

I was furious at the time but after thinking about it. He's a natural starter, who had to warm up in a damn hurry with gustave falling apart out there. He may not have actually been "ready"

Gustave got squeezed bigtime.

McCann was in the middle of the water fight celebrating.

Just want to say thanks for the excellent work in the GZ so far this season.   Seems the GZ is in mid-season form already.

My throat is sore today.  I didn't realize that the cold and the cheering were having such an effect.

At least George warmed me up before I left.

Just wanted to say, especially after shitting on him pretty well in the 40, Peacock did a heck of a job limiting that to 1 run.

Thanks for a very entertaining GZ last night. I just read the whole thing. Over 400 posts!!! FWIW, I started Paxton in fantasy last night with the hope of jinxing him. Epic fail.

I haven't  had a chance to see anything yet, what sort of a greeting did he get from the crowd on opening day

So, last night I stopped at my favorite watering hole (Pinthouse Pizza) on the way home from a late-ish dinner to catch the end of the 8th and 9th. When I got there, the crowd was sparse and my favorite bartenders were both working (one of which is a big Astros fan), so it was pretty choice. I bellied up to the bar and ordered a beer, sitting next to one of ladies that works in the kitchen and was already off and sticking around to watch the end of the game too (she is also a big Astros fan).

4 innings later and well after closing time (and a few cold ones later), I'm high-fiving the other die-hards that stuck around until the walk off.

AWESOME night.

Pinthouse on Burnet?  I knew there was a reason beyond the pizza that I liked that place.

I think it's awesome that you stopped at a pizza place on your way home from dinner.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
