Not surprising to see Marwin Gonzalez in there.  He has a great career OPS of 1.120 against Iwakuma over a pretty good sample size (25 ABs).

Let's do this.

Hinch says Marisnick will start tomorrow so that all position players have a start in first 3 games.

Beltran just doesn't even try in the field anymore.  Why on earth would you ever play him on defense?

T1:

Segura grounds out 5-3
Haniger strikes out swinging
Cano pops one down the LF, line, Beltran walks briskly over and lets it drop at his feet for a "double"
Cruz strikes out swinging

No score.

I was wondering if he was really a better option than Gattis. And if McCann gets hurt during a game, you haven't burned your DH if Gattis is in left.

I was thinking the exact same thing. He went after that ball with zero enthusiasm. I assumed it was going well foul based on his slow jog in its direction, but it was easily fair, landing about 5 feet from his non-outstretched glove. What the fuck.

B1:

Springer chops one to 3B, Seager ole's it, knocks it down, E5
Bregman grounds into 5-4-3 double play on the first pitch
Altuve...quickly down 0-2...grounds to SS, Altuve beats it out, as the ump gives the safe sign with two fists...M's to challenge...should be overturned...yep, 6-3

No score after one

T2:

Seager grounds to 2B, shift on, and Correa is there...6-3
Valencia chops to SS, and with the shift, Altuve is there, so score it 4-3
Martin strikes out swinging

No score still

I could be wrong, but it seems like Beltran's lost a step since the last time he was an Astro.

It's weird how much he sucks at stealing bases.
He certainly sucked at it last year. In 2015, he stole 16 in 20 tries - an 80% success rate. 2014, 5 in 7 tries. In the minors, he stole 88 in 104 tries - an 85% success rate. So he was excellent at it before.

So I'm not sure what happened last year, or why it took him so long to make it to 2nd last inning.

It'll take me at least a season to objectively decide if I like the new guy. Right now they could've just put the AI announcers from the PS3 2013 edition of MLB "The Show" on the air and I'd still just be thrilled not to be listening to Ashby.

I only tuned in last inning.  Have they hit anything out of the infield?

The flyball that Beltran lollygagged into a double.  That's about it.

Defense ahead of the offense so far :)

Speaking of, the regulars, the following are ++ defenders, Altuve, Correa, Bregman, Springer, Reddick.   Don't have an opinion on 1st or Aoki yet.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Never hurts to have some range at first too. Doesn't always come in to play but why not? They have 4 middle infielders covering the infield, sorta like last years OF defense with three CF-ers.

The defensive replacement OF of Reddick-Marisnick-Springer comes very close to that.

Beltran just doesn't even try in the field anymore.  Why on earth would you ever play him on defense?

Kind of ironic considering he is the guy in the clubhouse providing advice on how to be a professional.

Well, I don't know that it's a lack of motivation.  He just moves like he's 100 years old compared to other guys.  Perhaps that's just all he has left in the tank.

Well, I don't know that it's a lack of motivation.  He just moves like he's 100 years old compared to other guys.  Perhaps that's just all he has left in the tank.

I'm sure that is true. Amazing he is still playing in the field at all. I did not mean it as a knock on his leadership contributions.

Let it be noted that the #8 and 9 hitters last night provided the RBIs/HRs.

4 HRs out of the 5 total runs, right?  I'm not seeing a lot of small ball.

Saving that for when the top two starters aren't on the mound and they need to reach back for something extra.

Springer tried that, and ended up duct taped to the dugout railing.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

That was the problem.  He should have removed the duct tape before he tried to steal.
