It's "catching": another receiver with a sore throwing shoulder as Kaplan says Garrett Stubbs being held out of games "for now".

Right hammy soreness for Fiers, will be skipped in next start which was scheduled for tomorrow against Mets. Martes gets the ball instead.

My first thought was "I hope we see a similar situation by June or July." But shit, for all I know, Fiers will be the staff ace this year and Martes will have only a handful of so-so years as a middle reliever before he's out of the majors.

In right elbow, the Chron clarifies. Paulino last pitched in a ST game on March 9. Will begin season on DL.

Further clarification - because he ended 2016 on the major league roster, Paulino will go to the major league DL. No real difference, except to his pocketbook.

McHugh had walked out to the mound to begin the second, threw a couple of warm up pitches, called out the trainer, then was removed.

Scheduled to throw 85 pitches, threw just 26.

While that's definitely a blow, and I like McHugh a lot, to me it doesn't change the season outlook much. This season was going to and still does hinge on how healthy and close to their peak Keuchel and McCullers can be, and to some extent Morton. The other starters figured to mostly be a mix of solid, but unspectacular arms - McHugh, Musgrove, Fiers. If someone else goes down (or Fiers pitches more like 2016 Fiers), they could consider stretching out Devenski or Feliz, or giving Rodgers a shot, or, maybe later in the year, seeing if Martes is ready. They've still got pretty good depth.

From 2014-16, one of those pitchers had a 3.71 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 and allowed 0.9 HR/9.
The other had a 3.74 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 and allowed 1.2 HR/9.

Don't get me wrong, I like McHugh better (I got very sick of Fiers blowing all the leads he was handed last year), but objectively speaking, there's not a wide gap between them.

It would be interesting to see the variance in those numbers. I just have the feeling that McHugh is steadier: you're going to get just about the same thing every time out. Fiers could be really good, or he could be cover-your-eyes bad. But I haven't put those subjective feelings to any sort of objective test.

McHugh had some of those cover-your-eyes games on the road last year.

ETA:

Doesn't that mean a mandatory 7-day DL stint under concussion protocols?

Kinda surprised they didn't call up Tucker,he has been hitting really well.   Guess the call up was gonna be mostly a defensive one though.

Well, Springer and Reddick are already on the roster. Aoki has played there and Tucker has started 3 games in CF in Fresno this year.  I think if Springer didnt have the hammy issue it might have been Tucker.   You are likely right that TH is mainly here in case they need him in CF.

Springer is gimpy, and Aoki and Reddick combined have less than 80 games in CF.

Kemp can play OF and 2B  (not at the same time) so he would make alot of sense.

We'll see how they feel tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they feel quite a bit worse then.
They're gonna be sore as shit tomorrow but they are young and resilient so they heal quick. Considering the circumstances, it's the best outcome one could hope for.

If Teoscar goes on the DL and the Astros call someone up, I'd like it to be Tucker.  He's hitting well in AAA.  And he isn't getting any younger.  He needs a showcase if, for no other reason, so the Astros can trade him and get some value in exchange.  It seems pretty clear that there isn't a lot of room long-term for Tucker on this team.

Nonsense. That's not a valid reason for calling a player up. If Teo goes on the DL, I'd bring up someone who can play CF, like Kemp. Tucker is a defensive liability even in LF.

Or Fisher - not that I imagine he'd be more than "adequate" in CF, but he has played there a lot. That might mean a 40-man move though.

Agreed. You're not going to get a significant piece back in a P-Tuck trade unless he comes up and plays the rest of the year, hitting really well. Scouts have never drooled over him, he has negative defensive value, and he had a poor, injury-marred 2016. That's the kind of player you pick up off the waiver wire, not in a trade where you give up anything of value.

It would be fun if MLB would allow team to "loan" players like soccer teams do.

I wonder if they've thought about stretching Feliz back out. He doesn't have the most crucial role in the current bullpen, and he started up until he reached the majors.

Amazing but true: Devo has more strikeouts than Strasburg and is only 2 behind Keuchel for the team lead.

Our turn. So many other teams have been dealing with injuries this year, I was wondering when it would happen to us, and who it would be. Offense is going to have to pick things up now.

Apparently it's lingering effects from a foul tip/cross-up on a fastball last Sunday. TV guys said he just hasn't been feeling right all week.

Astros reliever Jandel Gustave (flexor strain) has started his throwing program. He's at the team's facility in West Palm Beach.

Charlie Morton?

We don't have a timeline. We'll develop one over the course of this week. He's no-throw for about a week. After that, we'll evaluate. These lat strain injuries end up in multiple months of missed time. I don't think this is one of those. Anytime a pitcher won't throw for a week, you're talking at least a 3-week hiatus. We'll have to do without him for a little while. This could be a blessing in disguise because the pace Charlie was on was probably unsustainable. Giving him a 3-week break could pay dividends in September & October.

Musgrove to DL w/shoulder discomfort.

Paulino gets tomorrow's start.

Another pitcher from Fresno will be called up tomorrow.

Musgrove only expected to miss 1 start.

Lefty Reymin Guduan gets his first call to the bigs. Numbers overall for the season are rough, but in May has been better: 1.69 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 16 IP. Against lefties for the first two months: 1.00 WHIP and .237 BAA  (10 IP).

I wonder if recent injury developments have Luhnow working the phones a little harder? My #1 wish is Cole and Watson, and Archer is next.

Is the idea that Watson would replace Gregerson?  Sipp has had an excellent month.

One more setup man who also can close to the mix. Hinch's use of the pen thus far has been masterful. Sipp is doing mopup work and has been better.

I don't think Hinch gets nearly enough credit for the way he has mixed and matched these players to give the right blend of playing time and rest for a lot of different pieces.

Agreed. The bullpen is deep, and different guys set up each night. He keeps them rested, and he has three guys who have closed.

I just hope the pen doesn't run out of steam down the stretch like it has the last couple of seasons.  What Luhnow does about the rotation will determine a lot of that, I suppose.

I like that they are pulling up AAA arms to take some of the burden from the main guys.  Which points to more masterful work by Luhnow to keep Fresno's pitching staff deep.

It feels like the whole organization has a post-season mindset.  Pitchers who have previously tried to play through minor pains are reporting them and the organization is resting them.  Credit to Lunhow and Hinch, everybody is bought in to what they are trying to accomplish this season as a team.

It didn't make a whole lot of difference in the end because the offense did nothing outside of the two big hits and gregerson did what he's been doing all season.  It doesn't help that the offense has decided to disappear at the time when we need it the most.  The consequence of which is hello Derek Fisher.

I'm willing to cut Carlos some slack on that one.  He was the recipient of a tailor-made double play grounder, only to have Altuve unable to get to the bag.  Yes, he should have just thrown the batter out, but he thought he could beat the runner to 2nd base.  In retrospect it was the wrong decision, but I wouldn't lump this play in with the slew of bonehead plays we've repeatedly seen from the entire team this season.

It wasn't very close at 2B though. You'd like your SS to have a better internal clock for the batter, and use better judgement.

Bullshit. Altuve beat Odor. Carlos had zero awareness of Odor's secondary lead and his busting his ass to beat a force. Throw the ball to Altuve or to first. He cannot get nobody.

The microscopic sample size of the last two games notwithstanding, the Astros offense is still generating 4.25 runs per game since the streak ended, even with those last two stinker games included. The offense is not the problem here.

Haven't had a lot of time to research, but...

Keuchel...10-day DL, retroactive to June 5 - no timetable for return
McCullers...10-day DL, retroactive to June 9 - no timetable for return
Morton...10-day DL, retroactive to May 24 - throwing from mound; no timetable for return
McHugh...60-day DL, retroactive to April 3 - throwing bullpens, fastballs only; post All-star break return

Is that all still accurate?

Technically, for two days, June 10 and 11, (due to the retroactive DL designation for McCullers) all 5 members of the "when healthy" rotation were on the DL at the same time.  That feels like it could be unprecedented in baseball.  FTR, I settled the debate for myself, between Musgrove vs Fiers as the 5th starter, by noting that Musgrove started before Fiers in April.
Yay.

FWIW, according to this link, Olney is hearing that Keuchel's injury is worse than initially thought.

I listened to as much of the interview as I could stand. Olney hasn't "heard" squat. He "thinks" it might be more serious working off the same information that everyone else has. There is literally zero information of substance in the interview.

Olney doesn't know shit.  Having said that, I think there are 4 untouchables (Keuchel, Altuve, Correa and McCullers) and a couple of "ridiculously unlikely to be available" (Bregman, Springer) on the 25-man roster.

I think the Astros would listen on Bregman, but it would have to be a perfect deal, and we'd have to get "over" value for him.

I would move Springer into the untouchable list....at least during this season. He is a team leader and brings a lot of energy to this team. Plus he's pretty good.

"I" would as well.  Not sure Lunhow views him the same way.

If reports from the offseason that the Astros were unwilling to include Bregman in a package for Chris Sale are accurate, I would expect him to remain an Astro.

McTaggart had an interview with Hinch on Twitter - sounds like Keuchel expected to start throwing again in the next day or two.

On KPRC, Hinch relayed that he expects Keuchel and McCullers to start throwing this weekend.

Keuchel said he doesn't plan on taking a rehab assignment.

Lance McCullers threw today for the first time since going on the DL. He could return to the rotation during the Astros' upcoming road trip.

Interestingly, the starting pitching hasn't been all that bad during this stretch.  The last trip through the rotation (such as it is) saw Musgrove, Peacock, Martes, Fiers and Paulino combine to post a 1.97 ERA with 1 K/IP and a WHIP of 1.02.  The problem is that they only combined for 27.1 IP in 5 games.

In fact baseball-reference http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=p&team=HOU&year=2017#all_notes has handy splits that show the performance of SP in June has been better than it was in April and May with respect to outcomes.  But the problem is they are needing about 4 more outs per game from the bullpen this month than previously, which has done markedly worse in June.  A combination of heavier workload and some of the good bullpen arms moving into the rotation, I guess.

Basically, what I am trying to say is that the Astros will welcome Keuchel and McCullers back to really shore up that bullpen.
Yay.

There's more to pitching than ERA. 3 innings 1 run and 6 innings 2 runs are the same ERA but which would you rather get from your starter?

He kinda said that. The downturn has been a combo of inconsistent offense an an overworked pen. Blessing in disguise to develop Paulino and Martes in the bigs?

He might be, but I'm a bit skeptical that Luhnow is itching to acquire an arm.  As long as the rest of the division is mediocre and arms like Peacock, Paulino and Martes are serviceable, why rush?

You don't think the Astros can win a championship with Keuchel, McCullers, McHugh and Morton (flip flop Morton with Fiers if he continues to pitch well and either for McHugh if he is delayed or continues his downward trend from the last two years)?

Thanks, I didn't realize that was the ultimate goal.

Anyways, getting into the playoffs is the first goal, winning the division is next, having the best record is third and winning it all is the ultimate.  As long as they feel one and two are secure, why rush into a deal?  I'm sure Luhnow will do his best to win a championship, but dealing a potential long-term piece in June doesn't strike me as necessary or likely.

Ultimately Luhnow may stand pat (I doubt it) but you know he would pull the trigger tomorrow on the right deal. He hasn't heard it yet.

Obviously they were willing to part with Fisher at one point, having been part of the original Giles deal. But that was a year and a half ago, and Fisher seems to have A) improved a lot, and B) he's now clearly much closer to MLB-ready. The Astros have a serious shortage of LH bats and could easily find room for Fisher next season (when Beltran and Aoki will likely both be gone), if not this season. So I'm skeptical of Luhnow hurting the near-term outlook for the team by dealing him now. I'm guessing he'd much rather trade guys who are further away, like Whitley, Franklin Perez, etc.

there is starting to be a logjam at the higher levels of the minors at certain positions. Example:  Linares is pushing for J.D. Davis, who is tearing up AA, to be promoted to Fresno. He is a corner infielder.  Fresno has Moran at 3rd, doing pretty well with his swing adjustments, and Reed at 1st.

I expect at least one of Moran, Reed, and White to be involved in any deal.

If all goes well, should rejoin Astros and pitch in the Toronto series next weekend.

Musgrove being recalled and will start tomorrow's game (McCullers being pushed to Thursday's opener against BJs.)

Assuming no setbacks I'd say 2 maybe 3. You'd probably want to see him go to 75-80 pitches twice before you can really feel good about it.

Plus you need to feel really good about it because for him to come off the DL, a 40man roster move will be needed.

No move needed--they're at 39.

Maybe 3 or more. I'm assuming he'll get to the normal ST dead arm period. Should not come back until after that resolves.

Guys on the Restricted List don't count towards the 40-man roster, so when Paulino got busted for PEDs that opened up a spot.

Luhnow on the pre-game show today: McHugh will make the rehab start for CC tomorrow and then comes back to Houston where they'll evaluate things but suspects he'll need one more rehab start after that.

It probably wasn't hurting too bad until he hyper-extended it on the swing. I've can attest to how an injury like that can linger and is easy to re-aggravate. You may feel fine and then the slightest twist or bump can be very painful and set back the recovery time.

I'll be surprised if a DL stint isn't in order. I'd rather see him sit and get this healed than for it to be in his mind the remainder.

When that 34+ ounce bat is coming around at a high degree of force, the thumb is all that is holding it in your hand.  It takes all the strain.

As goofy as those oven-mitt looking hand protectors are, there is a good reason why a lot of guys are wearing them these days. I would suggest that anyone who slides head first should wear one when on base.

I was taking with this guy at a pickup softball game the other day who surprised us all by sliding head-first into second. He said he was never taught how to slide feet-first and has never done it. I think he's in his late 40's.

I'm for Bregman to SS, but I hope we see a lot more Marwin than we do Moran.

Same here, although he has really been lighting it up with Fresno. Marwin might continue to play a lot of LF.

It sucks though, no way around it. Have to hope Correa comes back in time to re-find his groove.

First game post Correa, Bregman playing 3rd, Marwin SS.

Not surprising. They had the same alignment the other day. I would imagine Marwin will effectively become the everyday shortstop.

My guess is that Marwin gets the most starts at SS and Bregman stays at 3B (but moves to SS when Moran occasionally starts at 3B), but it will be interesting to see what the team does because I think you can argue it both ways. Since Moran bats left, you don't get a match-up benefit of playing a LH/RH batter platoon with Marwin at 3B based on the opposing pitcher.

Moran will get the occasional start at 3B, but I suspect Marwin and Bregman are pretty much "everyday" players while Correa is out.

My positive spin.

That which does not kill them makes them stronger.  Key players will be well-rested for a possible play off run.  Good game experience for Moran.

Hinch says he'll continue to shift Marwin Gonzalez around as Correa's on the DL. Alex Bregman will, in fact, play some shortstop, eventually.

Mark Berman @MarkBermanFox26 58m ago
AJ Hinch says Marwin Gonzalez and Alex Bregman will split time at short. Colin Moran and perhaps Yuli Gurriel could get time at 3rd.

Sparks and Ford said it best the other night.  These guys may never hit like this again in their career, you gotta go for it.   They also want Peacock back in the pen for long relief because they think that is a weakness of the pen now.  Which also means they need a starter.

Sparks and Ford are a must listen if you have the opportunity.  They are gems!

I think first Musgrove goes down.  Then Peacock back to the pen.  That would put them back to Keuchel, McCullers, Morton, Fiers with McHugh.  When Harris returns Martes goes down.

Hoyt over Martes?

As far as I can see there are three guys in the bullpen right now who are clearly at the bottom of the pecking order: Hoyt, Martes, and Guduan.  Harris replaces one and a trade or two for bullpen arms replaces the others.  That's my expectation.

"Astros reliever Will Harris will not come off the disabled list on Friday, when he is eligible to return from a bone bruise in his right shoulder, or pitch in the weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles."

"On Wednesday, Harris said he does not feel any discomfort in his shoulder and that the inflammation was gone, but the medical staff has prolonged his rest period to ensure he is fully healed."

I remember Orel Hershiser making a rehab start in San Antonio in 1990 or so.  They crowd and the players were absolutely electric.  After the game there were throngs of people waiting to get Orel's autograph and as the crowd started to overwhelm him he elbowed some guy in the face and ran back into the clubhouse.  Big time rehab assignments are a lot of fun.

The teammates of the rehabbing player love it too. Tradition dictates that a Major Leaguer on rehab pays for the post game spread, and it's usually quite the treat.

26 out of 30 pitches for strikes? I wonder if the minor-league umps start out a little star-struck, too.

Moran going to DL. Being evaluated for "everything from a concussion to a fracture".

I can't remember ever seeing someone foul a ball off their face.   What absolute shit luck, considering everything.

As for call ups,my money is on Kemp or Fisher.

It'll have to be someone who can play 3B or SS.  Not sure Kemp or Fisher qualify.

The only comparable thing I can remember is a time when Steve Ontiveros fouled a ball straight down off the plate, and it bounced straight back up hit him in the jaw (I think) It may even have knocked him out briefly.

Hinch further reports that Moran has a concussion and a facial fracture and may require surgery, but his vision is unimpaired.

White will mainly play 1b so Gurriel may see a few reps at 3b.

That's good news physically, but I worry about what the psychological effects might be. The first time somebody throws a breaking pitch in on his hands again is going to be scary.

I don't like this. The point of Moran was to allow Marwin to continue to play all over. I do not like rearranging the infield by moving Yuli also. I wish Kemp could play third.

White can play 3rd. He was being groomed as a utility guy in AAA even playing SS. Don't understand him being limited.

It hit him under the left eye. The face guards like those worn by Marwin and Correa wouldn't have prevented this injury.  But, yes, it's still probably a good idea. I don't see why all guys don't wear them.

Injury bug is coming for the Astros with a vengenance.  If they can survive this this team is destined for greatness.  But they really need some pitching because the bullpen is showing wear.

The Dodgers may be dealing with the injury bug now too. Kershaw exited after the second inning today with lower back stiffness. He missed 2 1/2 months last year due to a herniated disc in his lower back.

Apparently Strasburg left after two innings today, too. I was watching the 2nd inning for a while, and his control was terrible and he was clearly uncomfortable. I don't know who the announcing crew was, but they were saying that people are getting fed with him, and that somebody has given him the nickname "The Orchid" because everything has to be perfect for him to flourish, while Scherzer would take the hill with bones sticking out of his arm.

I was thinking he needs counseling by a former pitcher (Ryan, Clemens, etc.) that could tell him how to get the "mother fuckers" out.  Just someone with good experience that he might listen.

Maybe if McCullers spent less time focusing on that ridiculously cool carefully coiffed pate, and more time on focusing on keeping his cool on the mound, he could start getting that ERA down some.

DL to make room for Keuchel. Guess the prognostications that he'd only be out a game or two were optimistic.

I was thinking they'd have to keep him just in case Springer's injury lingers.

Never say never, but quad strains don’t typically last very long, and aren’t a lingering kind of injury like a hamstring or a high ankle sprain.

Wasn't it a quad strain that caused Springer to miss a couple of months a few years back?

If  this scenario plays out again, its possible we could be without Springer and Correa for the season.  Not something anyone wishes to contemplate.

I am hoping that this is not particularly serious and it simply the Astros being a little cautious.  It also allows them to avoid having to send down another player with Harris and Keuchel coming off the DL today.

But if he is hurt, lets get McCutchen and Cole from the Pirates.

The bullpen could use some good news, perhaps a new teammate. The cryptic descriptions of Harris's injury are somewhat concerning now that it continues to linger.

After a rehab inning also. This explains Hinch's forceful "I was not going to use Harris" in his discussion of Martes' outing.

I think it would be optimistic to assume he'd be ready at the beginning of the year. Probably more like midseason.

How much of this is genetic? I remember his dad spending lots of time on the DL and had his career cut short. I hope that son is sturdier than father.

FWIW "at least a month away" is consistent with the original prognosis of 6-8 weeks.  Surgery was on July 19.  6-8 weeks would be August 30 - September 13.

And Correa, of course, says  "I feel like I'll be back sooner than expected, so hopefully I can accomplish that. Everything is turning out really good."

The first week of September would be a very good thing. I was afraid he wouldn't be back until late in the month, with just a week, maybe two, to get his rhythm back.

At what point do we quit lamenting our rotten luck and start wondering about the organization's strength and conditioning program?  Especially for pitchers.

There is no strength and conditioning program that is going to prevent pinched nerves, torn thumb ligaments, or quad pulls caused by ricocheting line drives.

Perhaps Colin Moran should have better conditioned himself for getting hit in the face.  I'm sure there are exercises for that.

I don't think any of us would disagree that the bullpen is well worn. I doubt that's a conditioning issue as much of a demand issue.

You guys bring up a couple of obvious examples of bad luck.  I'm saying the ravaging of the pitching staff is almost as historic as the offensive production.  I guess they're just cursed.

Keuchel had a pinched nerve as has been stated.
McCullers has not yet pitched a complete season due to injuries. Currently missing time with back issues.
Morton has missed most of 2 and parts of 5 of his MLB seasons on the DL.  Missed time this year due to a lat strain.
McHugh had a posterior impingement of his elbow.
Musgrove had shoulder discomfort.
Harris has shoulder inflammation.
Gustave had to have Tommy John surgery.
Feliz is not hurt.
Sipp is not hurt.

Which of those injuries do you think is caused by lack of conditioning or strength?

Every likely playoff team has a number of good players on the DL right now. It's not just the Astros' S&C... it's what happens during a grueling 162-game season.

The first week of September would be a very good thing. I was afraid he wouldn't be back until late in the month, with just a week, maybe two, to get his rhythm back.

McTaggart is McReTweeting that Correa should "resume swinging a bat next week" which seems crazy to my non-medical brain.  That's just three weeks after surgery.

Sure I missed it, but isn't Springer eligible to come off the DL today?  Since he's not in the lineup, does that mean things are still bad for his quad?

This was expected considering Astros off day Monday but A.J. Hinch said George Springer won't be activated during this weekend's series.

Started running 2 days ago.

Hinch sounded really skeptical the other day on the pre-game show. I'm not surprised that Springer won't play in this series.

I did not see it, but I read someone's backswing conked him. Marwin is the emergency catcher, of course.

It was a pretty stiff blow, and to the side of the head, too (not the front of the mask). More info from ESPN: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20253188/evan-gattis-houston-astros-says-concussion.

From what I've seen, Centeno is a quality backstop.  Expect he'll be up permanently for the stretch run  come the end of the month.

Asked about George Springer's return, A.J. Hinch on @MLBNetworkRadio: "If not today, then tomorrow."

I listened to AJ's interview for a few minutes. He said Springer is "flying around" now when he runs, which was not the case when he was tested in Detriot. He said the focus for the club is ensuring that these injured players don't have a setback that would jeopardize their health towards the end of September.

WaPo is saying that it's not as bad as initially feared, and they expect to get him back. He's going to the DL and they'll take their time with him because of their large division lead.

Those of you who understand pitching mechanics better than I do: does McCullers flying open on his delivery seem like bad habits, or compensating for the injury?

Probably a little of both. Generally bad mechanics lead to injuries. Injuries lead to compensating for pain. Compensating for pain leads to other bad mechanics.

He never looked comfortable on his original DL return to me.

I believe that his flying open flaw is unrelated to his injury. Injuries often force a change in mechanics to alleviate or at least minimize the discomfort. They probably put him back there before he was truly healed.

So Evan Gattis?  He was put on the 7-day DL with what was diagnosed as a "mild concussion", and should have been eligible to come off last week.  I don't recall anyone mentioning his name in almost two weeks.  Is he really that bad off or has he been shipped off to the gulag and forgotten?

I saw that when the they put him on the DL, but it happened 11 days ago.  They talk about McCullers, Correa, and Harris, but not a peep about Gattis.  Does that mean it's worse than what they thought?  I'm sincerely worried about the guy, as the silence on him is deafening.

Brian McCann was placed on the DL because of what the Astros describe as right knee soreness. Max Stassi had his contract selected from AAA.

Jordan Jankowski DFA'd to make room on the 40-man for Stassi.

I'm pretty sure his future is in a trade. I think they were showcasing him when that fluke happened, and I suspect that played a part in the surprising/disappointing lack of trade activity.

He also said he'll need 20-30 AB on rehab, which works out to about a week.

Keuchel, Springer, Correa, McCullers, Harris, McHugh, Morton...anyone remember a season when so many impact players spent significant time on the DL?   Not to mention all the 10day stuff and role players.

Having one of them instead of Stassi might have made a difference last night.

If Hinch had managed like he knew who was hitting after Beltran, it also would have helped.

I think he stared at the eclipse.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

He continues to manage as though this is the same deep lineup with no weak links. Baker out-managed him badly last night.

Altuve continues to be a .360 hitting liability.

He's drinking the kookaid...big lead, no sense of urgency, just waiting for our guys to get healthy...someone needs to tell him that he's lost seven games in the standings in the last three weeks.

Correa starts his rehab assignment tomorrow in Fresno.  Looking to get 20-30 abs.

Also, McCann will be activated Thursday.

Basically all the guys on rehab at Corpus were moved to Fresno because of the approaching storm.

Gattis back from DL and catching tonight. Corresponding move Max Stassi to 10 day DL with left hand inflammation. Huh? Also, Altuve sitting tonight for lingering neck discomfort.

I wonder if sometimes a move like this is so a guy can continue to cash a major leak check during the week between this move and September call ups. As a thank you  for a job well done or something.

Stassi probably doesn't get a Sept call up. It may be some type of reward though.

You're thinking Centeno ahead of Stassi? Probably right if for no other reason than he is LH hitter. Can't carry 4.

I can't imagine it wouldn't be Centeno.  He's been the first guy up all year...left handed bat off the bench...why wouldn't it be?

They can't send Stassi out without exposing him to waivers.  He's out of options.  Better safe than sorry with the catchers.

I guess they can keep him around if they think he'll make the 40-man next year.  But it'd be pointless.  Centeno is the third catcher.

As you've already seen with the current collection of catchers they need 4 not 3.

The problem is that they will need regular playing time to be any good. If Hinch tries to spread around playing time to four catcher's this team is fucked. If they need more than three in last month of the season, they are fucked. Priorities are:

1.  Get Davis the fuck off the field.
2.  Keep Gattis and McCann healthy.

Yes, please, to #1. He has made major contributions to the last two losses.

My 3. If you are going to use Martes in important situations, trust him. Visit the mound to calm him if you think he is too excited, but do not have a hair trigger on pulling him. Hinch said last night excitement caused the walk to Trout. Well, send Strom out to settle him down.

Gattis to the DL with sore right wrist. Centeno recalled.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Gattis sustained the injury after taking a ball off the wrist during the team’s series in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels last weekend. Gattis tried playing through the pain, but it was ultimately enough of a hindrance to warrant a trip to the sideline.

No need to rush him. I remember when he came over I read that Cubans don't play but 3-4 games a week so that was a big adjustment.

Including Verlander they do.

This article seems to imply that McHugh's problem last night isn't as dire as we thought at the time and he might be available for his next scheduled start. That would be good news.

I don't expect much out of him the rest of the year. Might as well shut his ass down until next year. Unless he can learn to use his fast ball or a change up more effectively, he will never be a quality pitcher we can rely on. Evidently his arm isn't made to throw 60-70% curve balls per start.
