According to those who claim to know, did Dexter like it in Houston during his stint as an Astro?

The Nippon Ham Fighters won the recent Japan Series in 6 games over the Hiroshima Carp. A couple of former Astros played key roles in the championship series. Brandon Laird hit a grand slam in game #6 and was the series MVP. Anthony Bass had an RBI single and was the winning pitcher with two scoreless innings of relief in that series clincher.

A league made to order for AAAA guys: a season removed from being named PCL MVP, Matt Duffy has apparently* signed to play for the Chiba Lotte Marines of the NPB.

*at least one US media outlet has reported it as being a done deal though Japanese media outlets have yet to confirm.

As did Gregorio Petit after being DFA'd by Angels.

And speaking of free agents, Erik Kratz signed a minor league/NRI deal with the Indians.

It kinda looks bad, in retrospect, to realize the Astros traded the guy who would go on to have the years Melancon has had, and set a new record for RP contract, for one year of Jed Lowrie, effectively, and multiple years of Chris Carter, Stassi, and Peacock.

I guess another way of looking at it is that Melancon's absence on the team contributed significantly to the acquisitions of Correa, Appel, Bregman, etc.

Technically Bregman (and anyone drafted from 2014 on, like Reed, Tucker, Cameron) is the only one from your list that would've been a result of Melancon's absence.

In the last 18 mos. the Rangers have dealt 14 prospects, five of which are high-end pitching prospects.

After picking him up on waivers before last season, Reds cash in on Dan Straily by sending him to the Marlins for three prospects. While you wouldn't expect there to be any Top 100 Prospects in such a deal (and there weren't), Cincy did pick up the Marlins #2 prospect (RHP Luis Castillo) among the package received. Also received Miami's 9th and 15th ranked prospects.

[BA prospect rankings for Castillo, MLB.com rankings for the 2 other prospects]

Valbuena reportedly to the Angels on a 2-year deal, pending physical.  While he didn't really have a position with us anymore, I have a feeling that he could become a thorn in our side.

In Ex-Astros (draft pick) news, the A's designated Brett Eibner for assignment.

I liked both Valbuena and Rasmus, a lot. It will be interesting to see who does better this year, Reddick or Rasmus (both LH batters with good D in an OF corner); Valbuena or Gurriel (both 3B who got shifted to 1B with the Astros due to roster crowding).

Bud Norris inks minors deal w/ Angels along with big league camp invite.
Is it safe to say that Jon Singleton is making more money than Bud this year?
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Heard very sad news: Former #Mets pitcher Anthony Young has an inoperable brain tumor. Doctors unsure if malignant but cannot reach it.

Some may recall that Young finished his career with the Astros, pitching 28 games out of the pen in 1996.

How very tragic.

Of course Young holds the record for most consecutive losses by a pitcher (27), which is one of those bad records that you have to be pretty good to actually achieve.

The market for 1B types remains so tough Chris Carter may be considering a leap to the NPB, if you believe the story his rep is peddling (that would be failed GM/agent once again Dave Stewart).

After a 22-year career as a player (including 32 different teams) that ended with the Skeeters in 2015, Daryle Ward started on a coaching career in the Reds organization as he was named the hitting coach of their AZL club in 2016. He moves up this season, today being named to the same position at their Dayton Dragons club in the Midwest League.

Bass returning stateside, signing with the Rangers (for whom he pitched in 2015).

In addition to the Notre Dame-ex pontificating on SiriusXM and doing some coaching in Phillies ST, Brad Lidge managed to squeeze in some academic work since his retirement:

"Since he last pitched in the big leagues in 2012, Lidge, 40, earned his master's degree in Roman archaeology from the University of Leicester. He still goes on archaeological digs in Italy, with another one planned this summer."

No kidding. He must be expecting a huge year this year heading into his arb years. If his significant tailing off the last couple of months after his hot first 2/3'rds last season was him regressing to his mean or the league figuring him out, he'll be in big trouble.

Neshek praises Jason Castro and tosses in the near-obligatory diss of the FO:

“Houston’s really different in that they’ve got so many analytical guys (in the front office),” Neshek said. “I don’t know how to say it in a nice way, but there’s like an arrogance where they think they could find something better. They value something different. We would be in the clubhouse saying, ‘How the heck are they analyzing us?’ ”

That would be the same FO that signed him to what turned into a 3 yr/$18.5MM deal. Evidently Neshek had no problem with that analysis.

Lots of shits and fucks in this JD Martinez interview, but also an interesting explanation of how, right before the Astros let him go, he stopped trying to hit line drives and started believing in fly balls.

Too bad about Schreefer. I would love to see another 2-way player in MLB - Brooks Kieschnick being the only one I can think of from the last 20-30 years - and the fact that he could be used in so many ways would be cool: pinch-run, pinch-hit, or come in to face a lefty, then go to the outfield, then come back to face another lefty...

I was hoping to see it happen as well. If you use the criteria of at least 30 games pitched and at least 30 games as a position player/PH/pinch-runner, this article from Viva El Birdos said that Kieschnick was the only player since 1959 to have done that.

Valbuena reportedly to the Angels on a 2-year deal, pending physical.  While he didn't really have a position with us anymore, I have a feeling that he could become a thorn in our side.

He won't be at least for the first month or so. Out 4-6 weeks with a strained right hammy. Yes, the same hammy he had surgery on after being shut down last August.

Factoid, UT retired my number 23 several years ago. It was only a mere coincidence Kieschnick also wore 23.

Factoid, UT retired my number 23 several years ago. It was only a mere coincidence Kieschnick also wore 23.

Clearly you should have threatened to stop your donations.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Nats bring Matt Albers to camp on minors deal.

Despite 11 2/3 scoreless frames this spring, the 34-year old Albers got his release today by Washington.

Bass returning stateside, signing with the Rangers (for whom he pitched in 2015).

Bass didn't make opening day roster, scheduled to go to Round Rock.

After a rough spring in which his velocity was down significantly, Josh Fields was optioned to the minors by the Dodgers today.

In addition, Scott Kazmir's FB also apparently went missing. He's going on the DL with a hip injury.

Alex Presley, who finished 2016 at AAA Toledo, re-signs with the Tigers on a minor league deal w/camp invite.

Had a blistering spring (batting .452) and was in contention for their final reserve OF spot but got sent out by Detroit today. Mirrors last year when he was the final cut of spring training by the Brewers (though he would go on to play in 47 games for Milwaukee in the regular season).

Obviously not a former Astro but relevant given the discussion--Christian Bethancourt is apparently on the verge of making the Padres opening day roster and the plan is to use him on the mound, behind the plate, in the outfield and as a pinch-hitter.

Made their opening day roster, he'll be the long man out of their bullpen to start the season.

Villarreal has impressed many experts with his Year last year. The ridicule here may be old news.

Perhaps, but...

Quote
Villar muffed an easy double play by bobbling the ball at second base in the seventh, opening the door for Colorado to take the lead with two runs.

Quote
The second run of that inning scored when Villar didn’t cover second base on a steal and catcher Jett Bandy threw down anyway, resulting in an error.

Quote
...but the Brewers hoped his athleticism would play better when moved to second base this season. It was just one game but he made three costly mistakes in his first start there, allowing the Rockies to score their last three runs and win the game. Villar made two physical mistakes (only one official error) as well as a mental one in what was a rough debut at the position.

Brewers lose 7-5 to Rockies in opener

Why yes, I do think A.J. would be willing to consider that Stanford HC job.

On a less silly note, Kirk Saarloos (currently pitching coach for TCU, for those who don't follow college BB) is also a "rumored candidate" to replace the retiring Mark Marquess.

Another former Astro w/the Brewers? Yup, Eric Thames, who just clubbed 5 homers in the recent 4-game series against the Reds (and has 6 longballs on the season). Back in 2013 when David Stearns was still with the organization, Thames was an Astro for about 90 days (being claimed off waivers and then later released) although never got into a game. He then went to the KBO and mashed for the NC Dinos from 2014-2016 before signing as a FA this offseason with Milwaukee.

My wife flew out to LA Friday morning to surprise her folks for Mothers' Day.  When she landed at LAX, we were texting, and she added:
"There's a dude in first class who might be a pro ballplayer."
"He was watching a tigers white sox game and pausing it a lot"
"White guy brown hair, mediumish bears"
"Beard"

I did some internet sleuthing, and determined that is must be none other than JD Martinez, who had just been activated from the DL by the Tigers, who were playing in Anaheim. JD had been on rehab with Toledo, and they were playing the Bulls here in Durham.

Still kinda curious why he was watching Tigers/White Sox footage so intently. They haven't played each other in a couple weeks; maybe he was just doing early homework for the next time they play, May 26th?

Which reminds me of the Walgreens in Montrose.

Wojo re-signs with Arizona.

And then gets released last week.

Signed with the Reds and goes to AAA Louisville.

Called up to Cincy after posting a 1.40 ERA and .857 WHIP in 26 innings (5 starts).

It's Asher/Ashur day!

Dan Straily (for one season), Scott Feldman, Asher Wojciechowski and now Jake Buchanan. The Reds continue to pick up former Astros' hurlers having claimed Buchanan off waivers and added him to their big league roster.

Michael Bourn signed to a minor league deal by the Angels. He'll play at AAA for now but there's speculation he'll be brought up to play CF at some point with Mike Trout out.

Quite a collection of former Astros players/farmhands on the Angels' 40-man roster and/or AAA: Fister, B. Norris, Tropeano, C. Perez, Fontana, Valbuena, T. Scribner, Bourn.

The recent bullpen drama (and specifically, Gregerson's fade) got me wondering how Pat Neshek was doing this year. The answer is pretty damn well: 0.82 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 21 K, 1 HR in 22 IP for the Phils.

Angels have signed Doug Fister.

After 3 starts in AAA for Salt Lake City (16 hits and 5 walks allowed in 15.2 innings with 10 strikeouts), the Angels have released him. Had an opt-out in his contract that was exercisable today.

Claimed on waivers a few weeks ago, Kevin Chapman was outrighted by  the Braves today off their 40-man roster.

Subsequently traded to the Twins, who then released him last week after pitching a handful of innings at AAA.

Not a bad outing for him considering the layoff: went 6 innings while giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and whiffing 6.

That sucks for Carter. That seemed like a weird fit on the Yankees from the start. He should just be a full-time starter on some low-budget team where if he hits .210 with 25 HR it's fine, because they probably wouldn't have anyone better anyway, and if he hits .240 with 40 HR, it's great and maybe he'd get traded to a contender.

This may have nothing to do with Colby's well-publicized problems in St Louis and Toronto, but thank god the Astros have a clubhouse that welcomes anyone as long as they don't create friction and they play their ass off.

Sad to announce Colby cannot get his injured hip to a point that he believes he can return to play in the big leagues this year. Been fun!!
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Nothing is indicating retire.  Even Dad's tweet says "this year".

The only injury related issue I could see is that he wanted take a different rehab plan than the Rays wanted him to take.  So they said fine, do it on your own dime and time.

The Ray's comment makes it sound more serious than that.

He's been toying with retirement for a few years so I bet it's at least a consideration, especially if the rehab is lengthy. He was a significant part of Astro lore in 2015 and won't be forgotten. We named my daughter's dog Colby after him. His Christian testimony is strong and powerful and we haven't heard the last of Colby, even if it's not on the field.

Released by Arizona after playing all year at AAA Reno.

Also:

I'm watching the Nats @ Cubs right now, and JD sounds like he's sedated. What did they do to the guy?

He is a totally different broadcaster now. It is very odd.

He was more or less the same guy we always knew his first year in Chicago but over time he changed into something virtually unrecognizable. I mean, he's not BAD, he's just not JD.

Off the top of my head he is probably the most successful ex-Astro farmhand jettisoned by Luhnow. Am I missing anyone?

He wasn't exactly a farmhand, and I don't remember the circumstances of his departure, but Kike Hernandez is playing a valuable role for the Dodgers. And, of course, there's also JD Martinez,, also not really a farmhand.

We traded Folty and Ruiz, the 3B prospect, for Gattis.

Right. I couldn't remember the circumstances of Hernandez's departure. But I just looked it up: he was traded to the Marlins along with Austin Wates and Jarred Cosart for Marisnick, Martes, and Moran. Right now that's looking pretty good for the Astros.

Gattis has worked out ok.

Former Astro #2 DFA'd by the Rockies: Jordan Lyles.

Was later released and today signed with the Padres, who are assigning him to AAA El Paso and he'll start tonight's game against the Grizzlies.

At any rate, good for JD.  Quite a career for an afterthought in the draft.

Yes.  First three were legit cranks.  4th was him going down and getting wood on a low and away ball.  Pretty impressive.

You mean the one where Martinez wasn't getting it done in spring training, but the Astros needed a left fielder who could hit too, but Martinez was out of options so he couldn't be sent down until he figured it out or washed out, so they let him go and he went entirely through waivers without getting claimed and he signed with the Tigers and they sent him to the minors where he finally figured it out then recalled him and the rest is history?

I'm pretty sure it's not the accurate version of the story if it doesn't derisively refer to Luhnow as "GC".

This is not how I remember it.  He had just changed his swing over that offseason, and the improvement was evident. He had eliminated that weird, highly inconsistent, "tap, tap, tap" from his stride that was always killing his timing.  I recall that he was MASHING during that ST, and it was pretty clear that he just needed a few more ABs to get his timing in sync with his new swing, and was primed for a breakout year.  His improvement later that season did NOT come out of nowhere.

Martinez hit .167 (3-for-18) with one extra-base hit (a double) in spring training 2014 before being released.

Ok... fair enough.  18 ABs isn't exactly a great sample for AVG.  I do recall him hitting the ball much harder, though.  Perhaps it was right at the defense.  I know his 2014 ST stat line did not accurately reflect his improvement.

Every other GM let him go by rather than claim him.  He did not give the appearance of a ready to go major league hitter or a needs a few AB's to be ready to be a major league hitter.

Absolutely.  I just wished that, when he cleared waivers (which, I think was the case), they would have found a way to keep him in the system.  They also could have waited until later in ST before cutting him loose.  The whole process seemed unnecessarily rushed.

I also concede that I may very well be completely off-base here.  Luhnow has proven himself a very competent FO man, and I'm sure that the decision was more complicated than my armchair QB take.

My take, that no one will care about, is if Martinez was here this would be a different team right now.  I love this team right now so best of luck to him when he is playing against anyone but the Astros and a little bit of extra fairy dust sprinkle when playing against the Rangers.

I care about your take, maybe because it's almost exactly like mine.

Luhnow himself acknowledges regret at letting Martinez go, but nobody saw the turn around at the time and he was out of options. I say good for J.D. He needed a little more time in the minors and he couldn't get that in Houston. He made the most of the opportunity, figured it out and became an elite player. Good for the Astros too. They (as an organization) figured it out and became an elite team.

You are off base.  Once he cleared waivers he was able to become a free agent.  He was free to sign with any team.  He chose to sign a minor league deal with the Tigers.

I understand that.  Couldn't the Astros have re-signed him to a minor league deal, too?   I don't recall the team having made him such an offer.  I just looked at Martinez' transactions list, and he was "released" by the Astros, then signed by DET 2 days later.  There may be a rule that prevents gaming the system by re-signing a player immediately following an unconditional release... I don't know for sure.

In any event, BG is correct:  This team would look different if JD had been retained, and things certainly seem to have worked out just fine.

Only if he wanted to return on a minor league deal.  He could have signed a major league deal with any other club if that had been offered.  He chose to sign with the Tigers rather than anyone else.

And if my uncle had tits, he'd be my aunt. The Astros released him because AAA was already clogged with outfielders back then. I'm tickled for Martinez.

Hind Sight is 50-50 (to quote an old Auburn football coach).  It is easy to bash them about the decision to release him looking at current production.  However, it is important to remember that his 2013 numbers were not great.  82 K's in 86 games with a .272 on base percentage.  Plus his defense was way below replacement level (-1.6 Defensive War).

The Tigers took a chance no one else was willing to take and were rewarded for that.  Doesn't mean the Astros made the wrong choice.  Next spring listen to the number of players who are talked about having "reworked his swing" and see how many of those really produce different results.

Always ready to go to a game.

Clearly, this season wasn't his fault. However, unfortunately, Ausmus had the reputation of being an inexperienced game manager. He also demonstrated quite a temper this season, getting booted from six games.
