Rule 5 draft - 2016 Edition
« on: September 13, 2016, 08:28:27 am »
Jayne @ What the Heck Bobby does her usual great job of breaking down who is eligible for the draft.

It looks like most of the guys not on the 40 are probably unlikely to be taken.  There are a couple of arms at AAA I  could see someone trying to stash.

Always ready to go to a game.

I'm glad it's not.

I'd be disappointed to see them lose Kemmer.  He struggled to start the year in AAA but hit .283/.350/.529 since June started and improved every month.

Although seemingly not of major impact for the Astros this year, today is the deadline for finalizing the 40-man roster for Rule 5 draft purposes. The roster currently is at 39 but that excludes Reddick pending his deal being finalized.

If the Astros have space on the 40-man, there are some intriguing LH pitchers they could take a flyer on for the bullpen on BA's list that you posted in the other thread.

MLB.com with their own list of 10 "intriguing" names available, including 5 lefties (none of which were on the BA list).

I'm not sure what to make of the Astros having no intriguing prospects available.

That's what happens when Ashby leaves.

What I make of it is that the guys who would have needed to be protected have either been promoted to the 40 man or have been traded.

Only 6 of the MLB top 30 prospects are on the 40 man roster.  So that tells you the rest of the guys haven't been with the org long enough to be eligible for the rule five draft.

In other words, the pipeline is in good shape.

For now. I worry that it's about to get decimated by a trade for Sale or someone else big.

I know, I know. Prospects have a very high rate of failure, they are another form of currency, etc. I just feel like the system isn't in great shape currently, especially at the upper levels, and trading away several of the top guys could really hurt over the next 1-4 years.

I completely understand what you are saying because I feel the same way but we have to look at the fact that the club is going for veterans now with the FA signings and trying to win in what they perceive is a 3-4 year window. The MiL talent seems to be stronger at the lower levels with the influx of Latin players they have added. I would rather deal from the MiL trough than the ML team (think Bregman).

According to BA, here are the changes to the rule 5 draft

1. $100,000 per major league draft pick up from $50,000

2 $24,000 for each minor league portion pick up from $12,000.

3. AA portion of draft is gone. So what was the AAA portion is now the only option.

It tells you the state of the back end of their rotation and what they think of their in-house options.

That sucks.  I'd rather have Hauschild on the roster than Chapman (Kevin).

Speaks to the depth of starter options in both organizations. Hauschild will go into ST with a chance of making their rotation. They need back of the rotation types and Brocail is familiar with him.

Darvish is going into his last contract year and there are articles in the Dallas News every day about Rangers probably  not being able to sign him to a new deal and they should deal him to  get something back for him. They have  traded off a lot of pitching. The bill is coming due. One of their columnists wrote today that instead of getting in the Darvish for $30M a year sweepstakes they should deal him with a couple of other players including Mugsy Odor for Kershaw. Because Kershaw is a local boy and would like to come home and Kershaw would be worth the $30M per year. That sounds like a column that Cowlishaw put together over breakfast and facing a deadline.

Does Kershaw have a ranch near Plano?
